Also, does the debian iso have options for installing a wm/de or will I have to set that up after installation?

Not very, I'm not sure about ubuntu specifically as it may have extra programs and start up scripts, but LXDE and XFCE are extremely close in their basic performance. The full install disk does have those options, but you might get a bit of extra shit you don't need/want.

Does it get comfy?
For now

But I have to admit, what runs runs smoothly as fuck.

I consider getting back to arch for short term comfiness but I want to be part of the Gentoo meme club so I don't feel like coming back despite the efforts.

How to convince myself to keep on the road?

Benchmarks from a gamer, but includes memory usage at idle.

https://www.wikivs.com/wiki/Lubuntu_vs_Xubuntu

Less than a quarter of a gigabyte of difference here. Which holds to the previous statistic.

https://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/a-memory-comparison-of-light-linux-desktops-part-2/

XFCE still a little over LXDE. Seems consistent.

So unless you're running a machine that probably should not be running a desktop in the first place, both LXDE and XFCE are going to have very similar, if not the same performance.

People should ALWAYS use their brain when it comes to RMS quotes or email caps. There are a lot of fakes around and people still think it's some real shit.

How to discover fakes mails for ex.? RMS writes in emacs, following the oldschool fromatting (80 characters max line width, 2 spaces after sentence, 1 after word), etc. If you see a mail like pic related, it's fake.

Nah, there are tons of other good WMs and there's also some available older versions of DEs that run on OpenRC. Again, set your use flag to take away systemd to get more options and read the gentoo wiki about some of the choices you have.

Your sound was probably fixed by pulseaudio, but it's a nightmare on Gentoo and I highly recommend you checkout alsa-utils, open alsamixer and see if pressing M (mute/unmute) on the channels and bringing them up helps. If not, there's a wiki page on asoundrc and alsa list.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Why is USB storage support so utterly abysmal on Linux? I had to disable UAS for my external USB 3.0 drive to stop it from timing out during large file transfers and making the drive's SMART panic. The kernel smugly decides to reset the interface if it detect I/O errors, when the I/O errors are caused by the kernel or driver itself. Now my speeds are shit because using BOT instead. Windows doesn't have this problem, so it isn't an issue with the external controller itself.

Used for over a month: The above two, Manjaro, and the other two branches of Debian if those count (stable and testing)
Used very shortly to try out: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch via Architect Installer, ElementaryOS

I would use Gentoo, but I don't have the patience to set it up, and I want my OS to be easy to install.

Hello friends, I switched to Ubuntu a few months ago, and I am enjoying it so far. Funny enough, I've had to use terminal and synaptic package manager more often than anticipated because Ubongo is too hand-holding.

I wanted to ask, what is the equivalent of MS Paint on Ubuntu? I have tried Mypaint and Gimp, but they are more advanced than I need. I need something I can very quickly pick up on how to use it.

Pretty please, respond

I'm using Arch GNU/Linux. Recently wanted to switch from nvidia (proprietary) to nouveau. I uninstalled the nvidia package and installed the nouveau and mesa stuff. I said yes to replacing the nvidia versions of stuff. I deleted an nvidia-related file in my xorg.conf.d that was stopping X from starting. I renamed my xorg.conf so it wouldn't be loaded. I got X to start. However, any login shell now shows this error:

[[ ! ]] modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory /lib/modules/4.8.6-1-ARCH

Any idea how I can fix this? I've already tried reinstalled the linux package so the kernel recompiles. That didn't fix it. I've rebooted numerous times. It seems like despite removing the nvidia stuff, it still is trying to use it or something.

I was reading it to figure out what packages to install for nouveau before, I just got sorta stuck. I couldn't find much info on people going from nvidia to nouveau. I found a script for switching between the two (I don't really want that), and a lot of people doing the opposite. I found a couple people doing what I was on Ubuntu, but they used a bunch of ubuntu-specific graphical stuff to do it, so I couldn't follow the documentation.
>>

You're trying to say Arch isn't lightweight because there is something slightly more lightweight. You're trying to minmax, when really both Arch and Debian (netinstall) are lightweight.

twice )or more) as huge != slightly

a complete arch install with ~600 packages fills up more disc space than, for example, a vanilla ubuntu install with ~2k packages, which makes even ubuntu more lightweight than arch

>Uninstall everything you did, remove all edits, and start over. It is not hard.
I setup the proprietary nvidia drive literally a year ago. I don't remember what all packages that involved, and just removing 'nvidia' didn't remove the others. Nouveau is already working, and was before I posted here. I just wanted to get rid of that error I mentioned.

>The wiki literally hand holds you through switching to and from, as well as having both installed and swapping between them at will.

Switching to and from? No. Swapping between them at will? Yes, I mentioned I also saw that.

The nouveau wiki page tells you how to install it. I did that fine. It didn't tell me what to do if I was previously using nvidia. It didn't mention my error at all.

The packages aren't splitted into pieces, they are splitted in binary, source code, additonal documents, etc. On Ubuntu (or Debian, or whatever fork for example) you get the binary manpages, all you need, but source code and other stuff have their extra packages. So when you want to compile something for example, you need to install the package-dev package. On Arch you get all thin in one package, which makes it more simple in the developers view, but also more bloated for the average user.

when I login to tty1 after booting, screenfetch appears twice despite only being in my .zshrc once. What other files are read on login?
>>
>>57361243
It really does; amazing how its facade of minimalism works so well to hide its bloated kernel and development.

Might as well use GUI to login if you're bloating yourself with screenfetch

Do you guys use anime wallpapers?
>>
>>57361364
Does that mean Arch and Debian are the best distro choices?
>>
>>57361371
I have before, but I can't find many good dual monitor anime wallpapers, so I'm using something fairly generic now.

Yes.

Long story short, Im trying to setup a command to grab the latest version of Joomla from it's Github page:
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/

So far I have the following:
curl https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/ | awk '/>Joomla! [0-9]/ {print $0}'

Which shows the following:
<a href="/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/tag/3.6.4">Joomla! 3.6.4</a>
<a href="/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/tag/3.6.3-rc3">Joomla! 3.6.3 Release Candidate 3</a>
<a href="/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/tag/3.6.3-rc2">Joomla! 3.6.3 Release Candidate 2</a>
<a href="/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/tag/3.6.3-rc1">Joomla! 3.6.3 Release Candidate 1</a>

However when I add NR==1 to the awk command so I only grab the first line, it shows no results:
curl https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/ | awk '/>Joomla! [0-9]/ NR==1{print $0}'

I know NR==1 works when I dont include />Joomla! [0-9]/ but for some reason its not working when I include it. What am I doing wrong?

trying to install some dependencies for a playstation emulator i want to try. i download the snapshots from the AUR, but makepkg hangs on retrieving sources. my internet connection is obviously fine and -syu is talking to whatever servers so pacman seems to be working in a general sense. it just hangs on "Retrieving Sources". what gives?
