Tuesday's almost gone edition

Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price, or improve specs or build quality.

Was going to try to wait until cyber monday to upgrade things, but my laptop screen broke and no way on hell am I going a month without a computer (only have laptop right now).

Thinking about getting one of the ultrabook things, but I'm wary about them. Anyone have any opinions? Found one for about $800 with a a 500gb solid state (or 1T normal hardrive), and intel 520 or something. Don't know much about, what would you do for laptop primarily used to watch video and shitpost?

It's hit or miss depending on what actually gets put on sale. But the last time I built my PC back in '13 I saved quite a bit on various parts here and there. Definitely worth the wait rather than paying full retail price.

Is it a good idea to base my build around the case?

I like the look of those small cases, I think fractal do them. I just need a medium spec for programming and to replace a couple of laptops that are getting old now. A decent GPU would be nice. Would a small case have enough room for a medium spec build?

I tried to scrap together a list, knowing very little about building computers, using one of the builds in the OP links as a starting point.
I am a little uncomfortable with the idea of overclocking, as I've never done it before (let alone building a computer), and I'm not even sure how necessary I find it to be (when considering the higher heat trade-off), but I didn't see an option on the site to select a non-k model of that series.

I intend on using it for gaming (VR as well) and (potentially) things like 3D modelling and image editing.

I thank you for your time and advice.

What'd I fuck up?

Considering going up to a 3 or 4TB HDD, do they have significantly worse failure rates or anything?
Also, is the extra .2GHZ of the 6600k worth the extra cash? I assume not but it can't hurt to confirm, I guess.
>>
>>57350047
Another question sorry, my IO Plate isnt touching my mobo, should it be?
>>
>>57350057
Don't let the mobo come into contact with any metal on the case. Make sure there are supports/standoffs between mobo and case. Your mobo should come with them or the case may have them preinstalled
>>
>>57350107
>IO Plate
Don't think that matters, but they are annoying
>>
>>57350093
I see no point in getting a GTX1070 and i5-6600, specially with that case.
>>
>>57350183
Why? I want a decent gaming PC, I'm just also interested in having something small. The airflow is perfectly fine with the way the case is laid out, the PSU, CPU and GPU fans are all pulling directly through the grills.
>>
>>57348444
You shouldn't get last gen parts without a good reason, and you ESPECIALLY shouldn't get last gen parts from Nvidia.
>>
>>57350195
Let me say this.
I have a silverstone raven rvz02 and same cooler as you have picked with i5 4670k and a gtx970, it runs pretty hot quickly.
My friend has recently build a pc of his own with thermaltake core v1, which has a pretty small footprint plus he can add some nice cooling to keep everything cool. I suggest you look into alternatives. Just saying since I don't think you will be happy with the heat.
>>
>>57350225
Do you OC at all? Thanks for telling me this by the way, the first hand anecdote is useful.
>>
I cant fucking build a 2k PC, its like im autistic or something, is there hope for me /g/?
>>
>>57350250
No I haven't but I will have to get a new case so I can get better airflow and cooling.
If you're gonna go with this case or anything similar, I suggest getting i3 6100 and GTX 1050ti or GTX1060 but if you have time to wait. Wait for the kaby lake i3, seems like it will run cooler and on less power while delivering "14%" more "performance".
>>
>>57350093
Drop to an i5-6500 and switch the 3.5" Seagate for a 2.5" HGST Travelstar or get a bigger SSD.
>>
>>57350225
Not the anon, but also interested in a compact gaming pc. What if I only play somewhat older games and the only modern games I play are only Civ VI and Skyrim (I know, I suck casual dick)?
>>
>>57350273
Why drop the 3.5? It does fit, the PC Part Picker thing just doesn't account for the extra mounting point you get when you use a short GPU.
>>
>>57350295
Smaller drive = possibly better airflow
You want a gaming PC in an extrem form factor, you have no luxury regarding space. I can only agree on what the other anon said, you'll sooner or later run into temp probs.
>>
>>57350286
Sure just get an i3 6100 along with a gtx1050ti or gtx1060 since they're less power hungry and won't generate too much heat, thus won't reach any horrible temps and throttle.
>>
Are any of the console shaped cases actually good enough at cooling to handle high TDP components?
>>
>>57350286
The remastered skyrim or skyrim with mods can benefit from the 1060, if only because the game runs like shit anyway
>>
>>57350225
Is your GPU blower style? That's pretty important I think, in such a cramped case.
>>
>>57350252
Yeah it's hard to bring a gaming computer up to that price
>>
>>57350322
Smaller drive = lower performance and MUCH lower lifespan
Don't fall for the laptop hard drive meme, get a single good 3.5" and place it well and then toss some SSDs all over the case
>>
>>57350093
3TB drives have significantly worse failure rates
>>
>>57350093
Is that the case, I can't see how you could fit a GPU on a normal ITX mobo and have it that thin?
>>
>>57350717
Riser cards.
>>
>>57350093
That GPU isn't using a blower cooler, which might fuck you over considering the high TDP. Consider going Founders.

But that means you can't use a 3.5 drive, so yymv.
>>
>>57349822

A WiFi adaptor lets your PC connect to WiFi. Useful if your motherboard has no WiFi built in.

K means it can be overclocked. Don't get the k if you don't want to overclock.

Is this decen price/quality wise? I got a good deal on the CPU for where I live. Got memory, HDD and SSD on hand from other builds.

Will the case work ok with the components? Muy research says yes, but what the fuck do I know.
Plan on OC-ing the CPU to 4.6 or something, memory to 2800mhz.. Is this k?
I live in Eastern Europe so prices on components suck, so power source, memory & cooler were picked based on local deals.
Will the motherboard handle 2800 Mhz mem and 4.6 or 4.7 OC'ed cpu?

Thanks!

How should I interpert TDP values of CPUs and how to find out what cooler would be enough for certain CPU?

I mean, when I was searching for review of NH-U12S, Techpowerup (techpowerup.com/reviews/Noctua/NH-U12S/6.html) tested it with i7-3960X ES (110W TDP) and when overlocked to 4,1Ghz, they got 66C on max load.

But when they were testing Corsair H80i GT, with i7-4770K (84W TDP), when overlocked to 4,2 Ghz, NH-U12S had 91C!

Im confused - why same cooler have higer temps with CPU with lower TDP?

How Im supposed to find out, what would be fine for i7-6700k?

>Im confused - why same cooler have higer temps with CPU with lower TDP?
TDP isn't the only thing that affects the temps. For instance, Intel's mainstream CPUs since Sandy Bridge use thermal paste instead of solder to connect the IHS to the chip, thus resulting in higher temps(although they've improved on that after Ivy Bridge, I believe). Smaller process node also means that watt for watt, you're packing more heat into a smaller area.

And that's before overclocking. TDP basically goes out of the window once you start OCing, since the power draw scales with both clockrate and voltage and if you're serious about overclocking, you need to increase the voltage to get high clocks while keeping the chip stable.
>>
>>57352152
they're overclocking, and the 4770k went higher.
X CPU's probably also are just higher quality so overclock better, that's why they binned as X and not K or T

for standard clocks any reputable cooler rated for that TDP should be fine, for overclocking it's a crapshoot, just get more

Yep.

Because only the Z170 motherboards support unlocked core clock multiplier adjustments, BCLK multiplier adjustments, and XMP support. Putting a K-SKU CPU on a H110 motherboard is a waste of money because you can't overclock on it thanks to the artificial BIOS limitation.

No, they haven't changed at all. Skylake is more like Sandy/Ivy Bridge in terms of overclocking than Haswell/Broadlake. Nothing has changed about overclocking Intels, in fact we've come full circle since Skylake/Kaby Lake once against disconnects the primary PCIe and southbridge bus from the adjustable BCLK.
>>

Would a X4 860k bottleneck an RX 470?

I think 480 is better in the long term. If you upgrade every year go for the 1060.
>>
>>57356641
ye. not hugely though. also get the x4 845 if you wanna go that route

>>57348154
480 is more futureproof with more ram and better D12/Vulkan support, but 1060 is better for current titles. If you want your cheap video card last for long I'd go for 480, but if you're going to buy a new one in couple of years then 1060 will be better.
>>
>>57356641
Not enough to make a difference over an i3-6100. All you have to do is to overclock the 860K to around 4.5-4.7GHz for parity with an i3-6100 and still have higher minimum framerates over the dual-core Intel.
>>
>>57356750
no matter how much you oc the 860k it doesn't come close to a i3 6100, don't lie to the kid, yes it's theoretically a dual core but the hyper-threading adds two weaker cores. the IPC alone helps the i3 6100 crush the 860k
>>
>>57356702
thanks man
>>
>>57356797
>it doesn't come close to a i3 6100
What metrics are we going by here? AAA DX11 games? Then you're 100% right, a i3-6100 will run about 10-15% better even with the 860K overclocked to 4.5GHz. But DX12 and older DX9/10 games? The 860K gets a lot closer.

But factor in costs and you're paying Pentium G4400 prices for a CPU that still gets within 90% of an i3-6100 and has more consistent frametimes than the i3, believe it or not. The highest measured framerate count might not come close to the 6100, but the average framerate count overlaps because the maximum frame time and time spent at the minimum frame rate on the 860K is still better than the i3-6100 during CPU-intensive scenes in DX12.

Try it yourself. The 860K might technically run a lower framerate, but it's measurably more consistent than the i3-6100, which does bounce around a little more between the minimum and maximum framerate, but it's more noticeable because of the sudden spikes in framerates. The i3-6100 can push higher numbers, but the framerates don't stay as high for very long compared to the 860K, where it can stay near the highest framerate count for longer and dip much less severely. I'm not quite certain why this is, maybe it's because CMT works better than SMT because a CMT cluster is asked to share a workload rather than having a single SMT core splitting resources between virtual threads when it's already being overworked.
>>
>>57348154
People will talk about future proofing with these cards but it's bs. 480 has a bit better dx12 support atm but that's about it. Most developers will be using dx11 for years to come. Even with dx12 games there isn't a card definitively better than the other. Either card will last you a few years for at least high setting 1080p gaming
>>
>>57356976
>you're paying Pentium G4400 prices
>860K overclocked to 4.5GHz
Yeah nah. You're not OC-ing the 860k on stock to 4.5GHz
And yeah we're talking DX11 games which is most games out right now.
>DX9/10 games The 860K gets a lot closer.
I highly doubt that because most of those can't even use 4 cores in which case the 860k will get demolished.
>>
>>57357063
>I highly doubt that because most of those can't even use 4 cores in which case the 860k will get demolished.
Try running DoTA, LoL, or other normie games on an 860K and a 6100 and record the frame counts. I have and the differences aren't that great (I used an 880K, but it's literally the same architecture). The 6100 only edges ahead by a few hundred frames in DoTA over a five minute test run because it could go to higher maximum framerates. That's not by much and should be in the low thousands if the 6100 was consistently better than the 880K (like it does in all of the DX11 games I've tested). This shows that the 6100 does drop down to about the same or lower framerate during the same period of time.

>Yeah nah.
880K with a ID-Cooling tower heatsink on an Asus A88X Pro motherboard. Got to 4.8GHz stable without much of a fuss.
An 860K will probably reach 4.5GHz under the same settings or better. The differences between the two chips aren't that substantial.
>>
>>57357145
>The differences between the two chips aren't that substantial.
Not substantial but noticeable. Again, you aren't OC-ing the 860k to 4.5k on stock which further adds to the price.
Also what video card did you use for those benchmarks? In most benchmarks I've seen the i3 6100 pushes way further ahead.
>>
>>57357145

You can pick up an 860K for under $80. That ID-Cooling heatsink only set me back by $30. That's about $110, still under the i3-6100.
>Also what video card did you use for those benchmarks?
An ASUS GTX 750 Ti. AMD cards might run more inconsistently on AMD APUs, but that's down to the overhead on the DX11 drivers which are almost non-existent in DX12.

>>57357226
True, but an ASRock A88X mATX with an M.2 slot costs only $10 more than a Gigabyte H110 mATX motherboard. You can get an 860K to around 4.5GHz on that board as well, the ASUS just doesn't need more voltage to the CPU to get there.

Tbh it just sounds like your mobo is fucked up.
>>
>>57357398
>it would be a different story with a RX 470
Probably not depending on the settings and resolutions you're running the game at. Most people here only look at the results for the absolute highest settings, ignoring the fact that you can adjust settings you don't need or want to get better framerates WITHOUT taking away from the game's immersion.
Also, with DX12, the 470/480 runs about the same as the 1060 does in DX11 on the same 860K. Compared to the i3-6100, the 1060 and 480 would perform better in DX11 mode, but still be within a handful of frames in the FPS count.
The "bottleneck" is not as severe as people might think.
>>
>>57357523

Beeps are error codes, you're getting "beeps" because your mobo is telling you "HEY RETARD THERE IS NO RAM"

>>
>>57357458

>>
>>57357536
And all indicators point to the 860K and 6100 going a par with each other in DX12.
>>57357591
>I'm merely saying that for you to compare the 860k with the i3 6100 on a 750 ti is uesless as you're not making full use of the i3 6100 extra processing power
That's entirely dependent on which part of the computer is being more heavily stressed. In DoTA, you do run into situations where your CPU is approaching 90% usage with the GPU usage only dropping from 90% to low 80% on both CPUs. The behavior was largely the same, in fact, they both lost about the same GPU usage over time under similar loads (many objects and characters on screen at once).
It is possible to turn up some settings in DoTA with the 6100 and still have a higher overall frame count over a five minute period.

My point is that the Athlon X4 860K is not that far behind like people here seem to imply. It's well within 90% under stock in DX12 and older games and about on par when overclocked. But you get more consistent performance over time compared to the i3-6100 because you don't get as significant of a frame rate variation despite having lower overall frame rate averages, even in DX11.

True. My point is that the Kaveri platform isn't that far behind Skylake as people seem to believe. and nor will it bottleneck the 470 any more than the i3-6100 will bottleneck the same GPU.

- 4TB HDD

I'm planning to use it for GPU accelerated programming (OpenGL fluid simulations, neural networks, machine learning and rendering).

Only problem is: why do all the parts look like: "gaymers theme red with dragons". It is cringy as fuck. Pic related. I am used to clean looking silver/black themed motherboards and beautiful internals as I work mostly with Macs.

Another noob question: is it not an issue to use all kinds of brands with each other in a build (corsair ram / msi motherboard / asus gtx 1070)?

>>57358458
If you want to spend $400 on a GPU it's worth it
>>
>>57357760
It isn't clearly better though. There's exceptions on both sides. Benchmarks show the exaggerations people give. Dx12 being in its infancy simply isn't going to be reliable and then drivers are released that are negating these benchmarks post release. It's already happened a couple of times. More than anything, the exaggerations show up for blind company support using Vulcan/doom and shoddy dx12 implementation as main examples

It wont make a difference what brand they are and there are definitely good looking components out there. That motherboard you posted is literally a gaymen OC mobo. Do some research to find one.

The only problem is that MSI Z97 PC Mate doesnt have 4 pin FAN connectors but has 2 extra PCIe slots.
And ASUS Z97 USB 3.1 has a extra PCIe x8 i will use in the long run but i would be wasting money because i have a locked CPU.

But CPUs will go on sale right when they've been supplanted in power/performance by the newest generation, especially the high-end ones. You can also get low-end CPUs for significantly less when the socket they use is dying out. AM1 socket chips for example are pretty fucking cheap for their power, because all the retailers are running out of stock of their motherboards.

Get a fan controller to make the fans spin slower. If you don't have one, just connect them to a 7V source using the old molex trick (rewire a connector to use 5v as ground).

For the hard drives, I haven't seen them from up close, but the grommets on the HDD trays look too thin to efficiently block any vibration. So you'll probably have to use elastic suspension there.
Or better yet, use SSDs only, depending on how much data you need.

Finally got around to watching these videos. You guys... just completely ignored everything explained in the videos... Please seek help...

The first vid explains that in-game fps is important to have high at 200+ so that your 60Hz monitor will have smooth frames that don't need to wait for any rendering. He never said you actually see above 60fps. It's smooth 60fps vs stuttered 60fps.

The second video clearly says that a good reaction time is 12 frames (~200ms), which a lot of good CS players can achieve. He never says that you can react in 1 frame (1/60th of a second).

Which is exactly what I've been saying. You guys are dumb yo. I'll stick with my statement, 144Hz is unnecessary.

Building a SFF gaming PC, aiming for 1440p 60FPS, so the 1070 seems like a good place to be. I really like the console shaped cases, and this case seems to have better cooling than the ML08/RVZ02 option, thanks to the fan mounts. Hopefully I won't have any heat issues with this. No plans to OC anyway.

Planning on putting an NF-F12 on all three fan mounts (should have enough room despite the stock fans being low profile, I've done my research), should hopefully alleviate any potential cooling concerns. Is having a fan blowing directly onto the Cryorig cooler's fan worth it? Would only be just over 10mm between them.

Pretty new to SFF stuff, used to building in big towers, so please tell me if I fucked anything up, or if there's anything I need to keep in mind.

Sorry about the probably ever so often asked question in advance.
I want to buy a GTX1070 but at first glance its a huge fucking struggle deciding on which one. With my previous cards the differences were more straight forward and bigger but now im looking at 37(!) possible versions, scratch founders and EVGA and theres still a fuckton left. How would i ever go about deciding which one i want? People used to say they are all kind of similar and to just pick one but now that i know how many there are and the RRP ranging from 380-650€ in benchmark lists but in reality the amazon prices are waay off (generally off, not as in more expensive) i just dont know. So besides warranty and unrelatable benchmarks i just dont know what to look at besides design. What am i looking for?

>>
Is the Strix a good cooler?
>>
>>57368633
See, my 37 cards list does not even include pny and I did not know they existed. Zotac has the warranty going for them, lets exclude that for the moment
The performance of both cards is pretty comparable to that of an MSI Gaming X but even though the according price listed for the X should be +30 it actually costs 20 less. And you just kind of threw some names in the room. I like MSI kind of but there is not necessarily a need for brand loyalty. At the same time i bet if there were the same rigs with only different versions of the 1070 i would never notice any difference between most models.
Are there generally bad or outdated ones that i can at least forget? And if, besides those i can just put my eggs in the basket i for some reason trust the most AMD have the practically same outcome?
