I used to, yes.

Until I booted up one morning and found that OS X had decided that my main monitor is now a TV, which lead to fucked up font rendering and colors, with no way to fix it other than running some script, disabling SIP and booting from the recovery partition.

So I ditched that piece of shit and installed BotnetOS. Can't say I regret it.
>>
>>57310351
i think it only does that if you use hdmi

you can adjust the color profiles though and i haven't noticed anything wrong with font rendering

Yeah, color profiles didn't fix it unfortunately, and I wasn't going to get a new main monitor either.

Though I can't say I regret it. OS X was comfy, but I can't really complain about BotnetOS, not to mention that I'll be using it anyway for the field I'll be working in, not to mention the hardware compatibility and all the software available. The only thing I miss is how virtual desktops work on OS X.

Nice keyboard. Those are Tai-Hao, right?

Definitely under 100. I've looked on Amazon a bit, and the Cooler Master Storm one looks pretty good for the price. I just wanted to hear your opinions.

CM quickfire Rapid, or XT if you want full-size. Ducky One should also still be just about in your price range.

Sup, /mkg/.
I've been away for a few months and right now I'm re-planning my first build (it'll be a generic 60%, no PCB).
Have a few questions:

1) Are Gaterons still good? (or at least good enough for the price, which for me is 20$ for 65 switches)

2) Should I choose Costar or Cherry stabilizers?
>>
>>57311691
the only better choice that I could think of is the Tomoko, but it only comes with clicky blue switches
>>
>>57311691
>Could I do better for that price range?
Nope.
The Ajizz layout is shit, but that's not that big of a deal-breaker, considering everything else.

But does that key produce a scan code ?
Is it an hardware modifier key that needs to be bound to a specific driver to work ?
How many keys can I press simultaneously with that key ?

Where the fuck are the fucking arrows.
>>
>>57312210
That's why you get a 68 key or ortholinear 60%, duh
>>
>>57312486
m8 the keyboard is fully programmable if you want the whole thing to be arrows then be my guest. You can then use function mapping to switch between layers that have specific keys or utilize macros, all while keeping a small form factor. For example I can program the arrows on layer two over the WASD or IJKL keys and on layer three if have shitposting macros on every key

anyone ever use gateron clears?

I currently use cherry reds but looking to move towards a keyboard with 35g activation force instead of 45g.

Are gaterons good or just chinese shit? Also is 35g a meme or better than 45g? I want keys that are easy as fuck to press and am comfortable right now with the reds at 45g but if I can get something that's a little easier to type on then I'll go for it. My current layout is that of the TADA68, with backspace and backslash swapped, and control where capslock is as you find it on the HHKB.
The keys on the rightmost column are media controls.

Can't say there's anything I'd change, I'm more than happy with this keyboard and the layout I got on it. I haven't really used my HHKB ever since I got this board.

Maybe once I'll make a 40% or a split layout I'll discover some new arrangements, but as it is now, I can't say there's anything I'd change about it.

What I was talking about is not the standard layout of the TADA68, but albeit, it's fully programmable, so that doesn't really matter that much.

On another note, if I were to make a 60%, I'd probably go with a split spacebar, and use the rshift and right-side modifiers for something else than what they normally do. I never use those for anything.

That'd be fine with me. I've got another project going with another guy from here that also involves milling PCBs, so it wouldn't be much added effort on my part, not to mention that I enjoy doing this kind of stuff.

Cheers.

These PCBs cost about a dollar in terms of materials, and I have to stock up on them anyway, so all that I'd bother charging you would be the shipping costs.
Drop me an email at [email protected] or just message me on telegram (https://telegram.me/seiden) if you're interested.

Is it a good idea to use shift-in registers for the key matrix if I'm running out of pins on the microcontroller (Arduino Micro/Pro Micro, haven't decided yet)? Or are there some caveats I'm not aware of?
>>
>>57323711
Why are you using an Arduino when Teensy has more documentation for this sort of thing
>>
>>57324121
Because:
1) ~20$ + 12$ shipping for a Teensy vs 5$ for an Arduino from AliExpress. Any way you spin it, it's at least 4 times as expensive.
2) Arduinos work well enough to run a keyboard. I just want more pins, that's all.

You can get good keycap sets for 40-60, including thick PBT dyesubs. GMK uses the same tooling as cherry did, so you essentially get modern cherry doubleshots. I agree that SA sets are pretty expensive though.

Spend an extra $10 and get the Havit HV-KB378L. At least I can vouch that it's put together well.

Why did they discontinue it? I got the impression it was moderately popular.
>>
>>57335487
Probably Topre Corporation forced them to because they were butthurt over the Novatouch stuff being more popular than their own products.

I want a Cosmonaut copy.

It is all I need for my Deep Space ergodox.

I have entered every raffle for one so far and haven't gotten a single key.

Meanwhile, every time there is a raffle some dude posts the 5+ caps he got. Utter bullshit.

Custom PCBs don't count, obviously.

first time buyer, i presume that with the driver that comes with it i can set up a Croatian caps layout?
also, recommend "custom" caps sellers, so i can start a never-ending search for Croatian diacritic letter caps.

Driver doesn't matter. Keyboard only sends keycodes, your OS interprets them based on your locale settings.

For 100 euros you can build your own 60% mech. With any switches, with any layout, with any keycaps, with any case. Just saying, that's something you might wanna look into if you're not afraid of soldering a few dozen wires and messing with a bit of code.
>>
>>57337957

The code part isn't even hard now woth qmk.

I think there is even a gui version of it.
>>
Any mechanical keyboards worth owning for less than $70?
>>
>>57338447
Define "worth owning".
If all you want a keyboard with mechanical switches, there's 35$ options on AliExpress (sometimes even with Gaterons). There are even some bluetooth mechs for 60-75$.
If you're a bit more picky than that, you're going to have to raise your budget a bit.

What should I look for in a model M? What price range am I looking at? I really like the tenkeyless one someone keeps posting in these threads but it looks like its rare and just costs too much.
>>
>>57339415
The SSK (space saving keyboard) usually go for just under 200 bucks, while the industrial variants sell for $1000+
If you want a new production keyboard with buckling springs that is also not full size then
http://www.modelfkeyboards.com/
has some for ~$350

If you don't mind full size then you can get brand new model Ms from Unicomp for just $84 + shipping, they come with some customization and extra features like USB
If you want used you can get those old terminal model Ms for 40 bucks on ebay, but you need an adapter in order to be able to use it with your pc. Or you can get an used Model M for around 70 bucks.
>>
>>57339358
oh shit nigga i just bough this same tomoko yesterday at like 5 am in a fit of autism
i hope its good, it has cheap chinese knockoff blues but apparently theres not much difference

i already have the blackwidow chroma but i'm getting tired of it, the bitchass front plastic cover is annoying and prevents easy cleaning imo, and i don't even use it to its full potential, you can apparently do some custom lighting and program macros and shit, which i never did because razer synapse is basically cancer
i legit want a mkb that isn't fucking fancy backlit rgb garbage that i never really use because it's a distraction more than anything, and i didn't want the numpad because it gets in the way of my mouse when i play csgo

what should i do with my current blackwidow chroma? im obviously gonna keep it but it'll either collect dust or be used in my office, which is basically the same. is there any way you guys can suggest i use this? ive never managed to program macro keys because once again, razer synapse is cancer. is it fully programmable? maybe i could use it for macros entirely
>>
>>57339595
Tomoko actually has similar build quality to razer, minus the LEDs and ARM processor. As for the chroma personally I wouldn't bring a RGB keyboard to my office and the noise it will make would probably drive everyone around me insane. You could sell it on craigslist to some >>>/v/irgin and make some of that money bakc, or if you want put that money and buy a silent mechanical keyboard for your office work. Matias quiet click switches are actually quieter then rubber domes and more tactile then cherry switches so it should be an enjoyable typing experience while not bothering your co-workers
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=&brand=&switch=32&size=&led=&capmat=&capprint=&model=&availability=in_stock_pre&show_kb=off&show_kb=on&show_acc=off

If you want to keep your chroma you could set it up as nothing but a macro keyboard since almost every switch is programmable. That way if you want to shitpost on 4chan you can just press one button and an entire copypasta magically appears!
>>
>>57339515
that sounds expensive as fuck for a keyboard

tfw we used to own 2 old models like these, i'm pretty sure at least 1 of them was an IBM keyboard and my dad threw it out because it wasn't being used and was collecting dust in the basement

swear to god it looked like a model M, maybe it was some other cheap shit, I can't remember.. that's gotta be at least 5 years ago. i still feel sad about this, since he used to own the starting tech in a lot of shit and just threw most of it out and i'm only starting to appreciate computer hardware
>>
>>57339729
that fully programmable shit looks interesting then, i might look into it and it could be useful for coding in the near future, or just input basic math formulas for note taking, since i do that shit

as for the office part, my colleagues can suck my dick :^), most of them are leaving on other floors anyways because my field of work is constantly changing and reallocating people, for the better i hope, instead of actually hiring new people

in all seriousness though i'm a student working part time, i wouldn't bring shit to my job's office. it's for my home office use, a seperate room where i do my tech related shit and schoolwork. cant concentrate when on my desktop because i have no self control
>>
>>57339768
well the industrial ssk ones were only given to IBM engineers as a result they are more of a rare collectors item hence the $1000+ price tag.

Also the model F was made entirely from metal, even the mechanical switches were made from metal which is why when it first came out it had a price tag $900 brand new adjusted for inflation. And the very excellent construction gave it a 50 year lifespan. The $350 for the new production model F that has even better construction then the originals isn't too bad when comparing it old model Fs.

If you want buckling springs then just buy them brand new from Unicomp for under 90 bucks. They've got much better build quality then the vast majority of keyboards out there

>>
>>57340445
Is there anything wrong with the older ones? I really don't want to spend a lot of money just yet.
>>
>>57340482
Maybe the previous owner jizzed on it or something. I bought my model M used about a year ago for 60ish bucks. And this one was thoroughly cleaned by him (not a single hair was stuck in any crevice) and it was the older grey badge ones too. But now that they become more popular people are charging more money for them despite them looking like shit. For example right now my keyboard my would now sell for $120 on ebay which is why I'd recommend you either look hard for a good looking model m or buy them new on unicomps website

I'm a bit late, very actually. but a port expander chip would only set you back 1 or 2 dollars and would give you 8(or 16 if you get bigger ones, or multiple) extra pins while only sacrificing two pins for twi
