I don't know if you're still there but I found that interesting, so here's a one-liner:

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -name "*.ko" -exec modinfo -0l {} \; -exec echo -e " - {}" \; | sort > list

It finds ALL the modules, uses modinfo to get their license, sorts by license and outputs everything to a file. I made it on Debian so you may have to modify it a little but it should work on every distribution.

install funtoo

I'd grep for firmware + ucode. Some modules are in fact GPL licensed but include nonfree firmware.

From bash

The dude just doesn't understand how environments with bash works, hes citing an article thats talking about the scripts that actually set up the bash environment and has nothing to do with exporting a variable in a specific shell, it doesn't effect scripts because they setup their own environment.
>>
>>57240821
I'm the dude you fucking retard.

Do this >>57240781

It affects the script.
>>
>>57240845
No, it doesn't.
garbage environemnt variables don't pass on to another bash shell.
Your shit isn't setup properly.
>>
>>57240859
Try it then, do a webm like you did a minute ago. When you execute bash inside bash it creates a subprocess (not a subshell) that will inherit exported variables.

>>
>>57241059
I used bash because you did but there are other shells you know. It's very common for people to use "sh script.sh" and by exporting PS1, that script will now have a PS1 variable that it does not need to have. Which goes back to the central point that you shouldn't export PS1 because it's only relevant in your current shell, you should only export variables that need to be exported.
>>
>>57241239
A script that checks to see if the shell isn't interactive isn't going to be affected either way because its a fucking interactive shell with PS1.

Just admit you were parroting shit that wasn't relevant and move on.
>>
>>57241271

Why would you export if you don't have to? Just admit it's a bad practice and move on.

Of course there are differences between Linux distributions, that's why they're there.

Yes, Sublime Text can be installed on all of them. Most "major" packages are available on all distributions via the repository/package manager. If they're not, compile/install it yourself.
The availability of specific packages isn't a good reason to choose a distribution. Most distributions offer pretty much the same "big" packages. For the minor packages that are missing, it's easy to get them yourself, while benefiting from the other core features which define a distribution (and not losing those during the switch).

>>57244384

Do you know what else is a good source? Text which mentions the 5 major distributions worth using. Distrowatch is a collection of distributions that you should avoid (except for the 5 major ones).
There is no valid reason for those shitty, niche distributions to be used by people other than those creating them.

I thought I knew the basics of Linux but I've been struggling with what's supposed to be a simple thing for days

I have a program in Eclipse cdt, written in C, and I can compile it and run it. But when I try to add another third party library to it to use some of it's functions I can't compile it or the new functions won't work.

I've tried stuff written in tuitorials , But I still don't understand what the problem is or the logic behind this make process, please anyone offer any advice or a link to a guide
>>
>>57244980
the mp4 container doesn't support opus, you need to output to one that does, such as mkv
>>
>>57244724

I seriously doubt they're ironic. This one certainly isn't and it's relatively new.

>css
The worst part is that the GTK2 themes don't use CSS, but some other custom made syntax and it looks like a pain in the ass to learn it (together with custom theme engines).
Now I'm grateful that normal and tame themes exist (like Adwaita which always works).
>>
>>57245040
Thanks, that worked. Is opus the 'best' audio format, right? And h265/x265 the 'best' video format?
ffmpeg -i VID_20151121_161826.mp4 -c:v libx265 -c:a libopus -x265-params crf=28 out.mkv

Are these settings okay?
>>
>>57245040
Also it seems to be working but while encoding it came up with some warnings

e.g.
Past duration 0.831993 too large
Past duration 0.833656 too large 1272kB time=00:00:18.07 bitrate= 576.4kbits/s
Past duration 0.835320 too large
Past duration 0.836998 too large
Past duration 0.838661 too large
Past duration 0.840324 too large
Past duration 0.838326 too large
Past duration 0.841988 too large 1284kB time=00:00:18.07 bitrate= 581.7kbits/s

>Is opus the 'best' audio format, right? And h265/x265 the 'best' video format?
pretty much, yea

>Are these settings okay?
they're extremely basic, you're mostly going off of defaults, ffmpeg defaults tend to be pretty low/conservative
64k opus + crf28 x265 is pretty low quality
>>
>>57245082
try "-vsync 1" (after input)
>>
>>57244999
Never used eclipse cdt, I usually just use the terminal to compile stuff, or use a custom makefile, but generally, when you want to use a third party library you have to
-install it
-include it on your project
-modify your makefile or build options

For example, if you want to do some 2D stuff with the SDL, you'll have to install the dev version of the library (apt install libsdl2-dev), add #include <SDL2/SDL.h> and then you'll have to modify your makefile and add the compile option -lSDL2. On an IDE if you don't use a custom makefile, you should have something like project > settings > compiler > compiler option or something equivalent.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.

Oh you again. Proves how boring your life is for actively springing on a specefic distro.

The kernel parameters can be set according to your autism spectrum before installation. Not that you would know because you never really installed Arch.

Employed people use a kernel that works.

>packages twice as huge as on other distros,

Wrong. I always give you a simple example: install screenfetch. It's just a bash script. However, debian decides to install scrot as a dependency. The repo of debian is bloated no matter what you do with your package manger, it's not going to change anything on debian repo servers.

>the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.
If you need an installer there is architect, arch anywhere and antergos.

Text installers are objectively far more flexible

Community memes don't define the distribution, technical choices by the
developers do. It's clearly not based on what you say it is, and *never*
has been. It has always used significantly more disk space and a
measurable amount of additional memory than Debian and especially Gentoo
as a consequence of keeping things simple (again, from a development
perspective).

>>
>>57246303
That's becaus Arch defaults to python3 instead of python2. Doesn't mean that python is broken, but some programs will break.
This works for example only on Arch, other distros need to prefix python3:
python -m http.server 8000
>>
>>57246303

?
% python -m http.server 8000

Why does Arch intentionally break things?
Literally every distro defaults python to python2, but Arch defaults to python3, why? #yolo life, let's see what may happen?
>>
>>57246350
it's the new one, for the current version of python

how is it arch's fault people are using a version of python that was supersceded almost 8 years ago?

Python3 is the latest python and Arch is bleeding edge. Are you too dumb to:

>>
>>57246389

>>
>>57246400
>Python3 is the latest python
Nope. Python3 is Python3. Python is still Python and it should stay Python to be compatible with older programs that use the #!/usr/bin/env python bang before python3 was a thing.
>>
>>57246411
most things get incompatible updates from time to time

what happens is that the current version is just called by the program name, and any older ones needed by older software is given a new name

Is a font supposed to show up in the fc-list before Xresources can find it? And if so how to I make it appear on the fc-list? I've moved the font I want to .local/share/fonts then ran sudo fc-cache -vf, it finds the directory and the 14 fonts in it. Now what?

I don't care about that since I'm a NEET hacker and I have a lot of free time and multiple PCs (computers)
>>
>>57247294
linux can read windows partition (with ntfs2g) the ony problem is writing to windows partition because every now and then windows fucks up during shutdown and does not unmount the partition properly. if that happens usually booting into windows and shutting down again fixes this but its still quite anoying
>>
>>57247364
so the best course of action would be to partition my files, install debian, and then copy over the files instead of leaving a windows partition?
