wtf. Why do these people care about a simple wordpress site?

I can't even ssh onto it anymore. Furking hell.

Is there a checklist for security that I can use? I keep finding out about new exploits that crash my server.

I've disabled password login. My root password is 10 diceware words long. I've only opened ports 80/443, 22, and 40000 (ftp). I made sure wordpress uses the proper password hashing. I disabled xml-rpc. But now I have to wait until I'm back home again to find out what the fuck I did wrong this time.

>Isn't it ironic that the proprietary software developers call us communists? We are the ones who have provided for a free market, where they allow only monopoly. If the users chooses this proprietary software package, he then falls into this monopoly for support. The only way to escape from monopoly is to escape from proprietary software, and that is what the free software movement is all about. We want you to escape and our work is to help you escape. We hope you will escape to the free world. The free world is the new continent in cyberspace that we have built so we can live here in freedom. It's impossible to live in freedom in the old world of cyberspace, where every program has its feudal lord that bullies and mistreats the users. So, to live in freedom we have to build a new continent. Because this is a virtual continent, it has room for everyone, and there are no immigration restrictions. And because there were never indigenous peoples in cyberspace, there is also no issue of taking away their land. So everyone is welcome in the free world, come to the free world, live with us in freedom. The free software movement aims for the liberation of cyberspace and everyone in it.

No it doesn't. It's a RHEL testbed which may have guidelines for packages, but these guidelines exclude kernel modules.

abloobloo pretentious devs shoved their political ideology into a part of a widely used set of programs and literally hardcoded a replacement from "linux" to "GNU/"

why should their programs be special when an installation of a normal operating system uses a wide range of other programs?

fsf is a completely retarded organization to support, they spend too much money on this stuff

support EFF instead
>>
>>57247528
Daily reminder that BSD is an insecure garbage. It doesn't have softwares in its official repos, which makes people use ports. Ports are maintained by a group of basement dwelling neckbeards and software vendors do not audit their compile scripts.

Software vendors provide precompiled binaries for Linux with checksum, but they don't do the same for *BSD.

Furthermore *BSD has a very limited driver support. Even if some device manage to run, the drivers crash due to aggressive mitigation. This is why your laptop turns into a room heater when you run X-org on BSD.

BSD desktop environments are poorly put together. Many desktop environments are developed with Linux in mind. For example Xfce, GNOME, Cinnamon or MATE uses udev for automounting external storage. BSD doesn't have udev: automounting will not work on BSD. I knew this first hand when I tried PC-BSD (a variant of BSD) few years back. Now that GNOME and other DEs are slowly moving to newer technologies like Wayland and Systemd: BSD is and will always remain crippled for desktop use.

Just for the record, I'll let you in some secrets: almost no printer/scanner and bluetooth devices will work on BSD.

Overall my biggest beef against BSD is its philosophy. It claims to be "secure" but its "secure" version has NO softwares. Use ports and it is no longer BSD team's fault that you used "insecure" 3rd party softwares. What a joke!!

Bottomline:
1. Linux fights with Windows in terms of usability while BSD can't even compete with Linux.
2. BSD offers NOTHING practical to be used instead of Linux.

If you are using a free operating system, use one that's usable for desktops. Don't use a router OS (while Linux beats them in routers as well).

you are free to name your distribution GNU, though.

But calling the thread GNU is like limiting it to only those few distributions (debian, parabola, gnewsense off the top of my head).

Calling it the FLT includes all Linux distributions, regardless of what they decided to name themselves
>>
>>57247398

Most file managers either run or have the option to run in daemon mode. That means they'll appear almost instantly when you hit their shortcut key to start it.
Why is it important for you that it slides down instead of just appearing? Depending on your window manager (Compiz) you can most likely make it slide down or even spin in cubes and shit.

I need to improve my Linux knowledge for work. I'm a web developer that used to just do front-end but recently been working on back-end too so need to sharpen up my Linux skills.

The company I work for mostly runs VPS servers on digital ocean that run Ubuntu. (i believe some are centOS too but haven't seen that yet)

My current knowledge is: ssh, navigate file system, nano to edit files, copy files. I can set up a PHP/Mysql/apache(or nginx) server and secure it by following instructions I copied into a txt file from tutorials. I can do basic apache/mysql stuff like configure vhosts, restart the server, make a db backup dump.

My question is: is there much else I should be familiar with? I'm probably going to end up in charge of some servers running production projects. If I wanted to get more comfortable with Linux at home should I just use ubuntu or would another distro be better?

Ideapad Y700 for the heavy legwork dual-running Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu-MATE.

Thinkpad X201 running Xubuntu.

Thinkpad T420 running Arch (I will give this away once I upgrade it with SSD)

My question is: how do you guys recommend I share files between the 3? I guess recommend me a good cloud service or the best way to host it myself, or something third.

No 'just e-mail what you need' or 'just use USB sticks', I need a shared folder.

Do you want the files to be accessible when only one computer is on or do you want computers to share folders between them (requiring at least two to be on)?

Basically if you want persistence you'll need a server or a cloud service and if you just want to share folders, you can use sftp (ssh), it integrates easily with your file manager.

Why pressing Enter key makes bash to repeat line, later giving error like "[abc: command not found"? Why can't it just switch to the next line?
How can I make script to not exit after ^C, but still having ^C printed?
How can I say Bash if we have line 'exit\n', then exit script?

Isn't that the purpose of connecting an external monitor?

That the rational they give. But what's ridiculous is that's there's no option to change it, rather than such behavior simply being default.
>Isn't that the purpose of connecting an external monitor?
No, I use my laptop display as a secondary workspace below my main monitor, and I like to close the lid when away from the desk. But now I have to both lock the screen manually, and then close the lid, with no option to change it via Xfce settings.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.

And for gtk3 you just need to replace whatever is inside ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css with

Because there's one or two Arch users here that are super autistic retards and one or two Debian users here that are super autistic retards. It only takes a few people to ruin a thread, they probably shitpost on shifts so they can shill their distro 24/7.

Arch has 32% of the desktop market share, just shy of Ubuntu's 47%. Can't wait to hop onto Arch once it has surpassed Ubuntu.

Is there a quick good reference guide on bash?
Nothing in depth but a primer over important stuff/basic usage that gives you enough detail to read and understand things and then can read the actual documentation of whatever command for more depth

I've seen this kind of stuff with git and it was the springboard to me actually being able to use and understand git.
