IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My x230 has no icons on its bottom and ports, no water drain icons, no ram cover icon, no screw icons, no usb or dp icons.
All pictures of the x230 in the internet have them, are there two versions of the x230 or a newer version?
>>
R.I.P X220 you served me well for 4 years.

last night while shitposting noticed the backlight started flickering, not a minute later the fucker shuts off and a i smell burnt plastic. well at least my school offers t420's to any student without a laptop, so thats good but now i just have 3 x220 batteries that are going to waste (put them on my local ebay type site but i dont think they will sell) but the dock works so its all good.

My X230 runs:
At least 2 VMs easily
CATIA (complex renderings take a shitload of time though)
SolidWorks
Siemens automation software (heavy as fuck)
Stuff in OpenCV (real time processing of video feeds and shit like that)
Heavy and complex simulations in Matlab/Simulink
Other assorted software.

How's the T460s working out for development? I found the configuration of 1440p, 20 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and the i7 pretty interesting.

Any idea on how well linux (for example ubuntu) runs on it?

How's the keyboard and the battery life?
>>
>>57147072

Mint is shilled hard here, but it's shit under the hood. Debian is fine for beginners. Once you get the hang of Debian, switch to Qubes. It takes about an hour for even a newbie to learn Qubes, but it's well worth the investment.

Lenovo had superfish virus or something on a lot of products
>>
>>57147154

I know that Lenovo had an issue, but that wasn't up to Lenovo, but Linux. Linux didn't have the driver for the intel storage technology which would only support AHCI mode while the notebook only allowed the RAID mode, which resulted in Linux unable to be installed. I might be entirely wrong on the technical part, but that's the details I remember. Not sure if you mean that. Not a kind of backdoor but a kind of blockade against Linux.

>>57147329
I'll compare to the T420/T430.

They're very sturdy, more than Thinkpads.
Screens of SLIGHTLY better quality.
Trackpoint is shit.
Trackpad is much better than the competition.
Keyboard feels slightly worse (less key travel, better texture, worse layout).
No dedicated volume keys. Dedicated wi-fi and mute buttons, and also a button that opens the default web browser. Can't be reconfigured like the thinkvantage button though.
Holy shit, they are fucking tanks.
Seems more serviceable, one button in the back opens the whole underside of the computer, giving direct access to EVERYTHING.
8460p heats somewhat, 8470p doesn't heat that much.
8470p has DP port, 3 USB (2 3.0, 1 always on), combo eSATA/USB 2.0 port, SD card reader, express card slot, smart card reader, RJ45, RJ11, VGA.
768p and 900p screens are standard.
8460p can't take an mSATA SSD like the T420, but the 8470p can.
Did I say they are sturdy?

T430 is slightly wider and thinner than the 8470p.

That's about it.

Uhhh, buddy, the 2670QM was never in the W520. That was the 2760QM, which is indeed more powerful than the 2720. The only processors that you could get that were worse were the 2620M, which was a dual-core (and actually had better single-core performance). Apparently you could also get the W520 with i5s, but I've never seen one.

2720QM is still a good processor, but it was definitely the slowest quad core option in the W series when new.

I have a T400 with the P8400 and it's a fantastic machine. Throw another 4GB of RAM and an SSD into it and you'll basically have my daily driver.

If you want to do any gaming on it make sure and get the model with the HD3470 though. It's ancient by modern standards but still lightyears ahead of the Intel IGP. Windows 7 and I believe 8/8.1 have drivers available to let you switch GPUs on the fly (AMD for performance, Intel for battery life), but if you're using Windows 10 or loonix you'll have to switch it manually in the BIOS so it's less convenient.

Also, 16:10 is glorious but try to get one with a 1440x900 screen. Mine is 1280x800 and it's not terrible, but I do wish I had the extra resolution bump.

yeah it's pretty tank tbqh. daily driver wise, everything I've thrown at it from audio/video rendering to autist-level tabs open on chrome.

as far as gaymen is concerned, skyrim legendary edition on high/ultra with zero framedrops.

the only issue I had was the "FN" lock, if I hit the mute hardware button, it enables FN key lock and thus kills most functionality of the KB until it's reset in Lenovo settings. not sure what is causing this yet, but this machine is new to me (as of Monday morning)

I've narrowed my choices down to the T460 T460p or the X260. I'm stuck trying to decide which is better to have, small i5 1080p machine, larger i5 1080p machine, or maxed out 1440p hot rod with the 45w i7 and dGPU. This will be my school laptop for working in the library taking to class etc. so you can see why I'm stuck between battery life and high performance. I've heard the T460p can get just under 10 hours if you're careful, which would be enough for me I suppose

By buying individual parts, would you theoretically be able to basically buy an out of production thinkpad that's basically completely new?

I'm wondering what to do with my x60s, it's a pretty nice machine but it goes to fucking 50-60 degrees C when just browsing the internet. How should I fix this? already applied thermal paste, was thinking of buying a new heatsink, anything else?

You really don't fix it. The newer cpus (x61s board) are a tiny bit better. Another thing you can do to fix it is switch out the ultra-hot standard wifi card.
>>
>>57157215
Are there higher resolution panels available for the x200s? I kind of want something smaller than my t60p, but the 1920x1200 panel I've got in there isn't something I'm willing to give up.
>>
>>57157653
That would probably help, but what could I replace the wifi card with that won't need me to modify BIOS shit?
>>
>>57157674
I've got a half-sized Intel 5300 533AN_HMWG2 in my t60p without any modifications. The bottom 4965AG card in that picture runs far cooler than the top one and both work in that x61s. The cards are around $5, so it might be worth a small risk to try one out.
>>
>>57157672
nope, with lvds 16:10 @ 12.1" 1400x900 or 1280x800 is all you're going to get

x200/x200s/x201/x201s lids are interchangeable though
>>
>>57157743
Is there a list of cards that will work or anything?

also, why do some programs refer to my x60s as a T43p?

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

I took a look around to check some things, turns out the 5300 is in my x61s with pin 20 taped. Works without any modifications in the x61s. This is apparently the whitelist-free slot that the x60s lacks.

I'd first take a look at tpfancontrol, then identify if the wifi card is a big enough heat source to replace, and attempt to modify a cooler card for use, in that order.
>>
>>57158374
X230 will have better integrated graphics and chiclet keyboard (which may be a pro or a con).

X220 will have the older style keyboard, and the ability to use third party batteries.

Hey /tpg/

I just recieved the t420 I ordered, but for some reason it doesn't have a res option higher then 1366x768, and only 99.99GB hard disk space despite seller description showing it 1600x900,

Should I contact the seller and return/replace it or is it some issue with the drivers?
>>
>>57159199
Forgot to mention the HDD is supposed to be 320 GB
>>
>>57159199
right click drive->propeties check model number but sounds like you got hosed senpai, resolution is set with default drivers in win 7/10
>>
>>57159243
The drive just shows max 99.99 capacity and I just found out there are models with 1366x768 screen resolution,

I think I am just going to return this one, a shame, I was liking everything else about it.

Pajeet ebay is not trustworthy after all.
>>
>>57159343
the resolution isn't so bad, for the 14" screen it's decent when you tweak shit like taskbar, etc.

I am an advocate for stretching the piss out of available screen resource but I've taken a liking to the 1368x
>>
>>57159356
Still I think I can get better t420 the one that would ACTUALLY have 1600x900 and HDD for similar price, so I guess I'd opt for that.

Tbh I think the seller was tech illeterate and didn't bother past checking device specs on internet.

The 1366x768 is not looking too bad now that I look at it desu, I think I will just keep it and there is some stuff about having the wrong drivers etc, so maybe I'll look into that too.

No, some only have the iGPU like mine.
>>
>>57169482
So I got lucky? Seller didn't say anything about the igpu
>>
>>57169491
>I got lucky?
I guess so, depends of how you're going to use your ThinkPad imo.

From my point of view I'd rather have the iGPU only so i can use a quadcore i7 instead of the stock CPU. Having to share the heatsink with the dGPU + extra 10W from the quadcore i7 equals housefire, plus the T420 NVS isn't that much better.

Even then if you want to play some games there's the T430 with better iGPU and also a dGPU option. Or you could do fuck all and just get an eGPU.
>>
>>57169590
If I do get the i7 can I disable to dGPU and just use the Intelshit graphix?
>>
So I bought a T420 with a 2640m, 8gb ram and a 128gb SSD. The hard drive is SATA 2, so I was thinking of upgrading to a bigger SATA 3 drive.

How much space do I need if I'm planning on dual booting Windows and debian? Also, is there any reason to get an mSATA, considering it's SATA 2? For a secondary drive would you guys put an SSD in the ultrabay or mSATA?
>>
>>57169590
using intel GPU on my T430 I can play skyrim on ultra settings with 4k texture replacements, fallout 4 on low/medium mix
>>
>>57169598
I guess, but keep in mind that if you upgrade to a quad core you'd still be sharing the heatsink with the dGPU and the quad core releases more heat under load than the stock dual cores.

There's also the original dual core i7s though.

>>57169619
Yeah that's why i suggested that if you want to play some games you're better getting the T430 imo.
>>
>>57169611
>is there any reason to get an mSATA, considering it's SATA 2?
The option to have 3 drives at the same time or 2 drives + optical drive on your laptop. You won't notice the difference between SATA2 and SATA3 in daily usage anyway.

>would you guys put an SSD in the ultrabay or mSATA?
I got msata as main SSD and 2 storage HDDs, replacing one of them for the optical drive when i need to rip audio CDs.

They are usually cheaper than competing T420/30 and E6420/30, however it some people may freakout that the dGPU units have AMD Radeon HD cards than nVidia NVS Quadros, it would cripple when it comes to that CUDA core crap photoshop fags need.

If not, copper shim ftw.

They're shit. I used to work for HPE and we were issued both 8460p and later we got Elitebook 750's. They keyboard is a pain in the ass to use, and the clit mouse is even worse. Avoid them at all costs, unless you have no other choice. I don't know about their durability, I used to treat mine very well since it was a company asset and I didn't want them fucking with me about it. But still, I remember seeing a lot of the 750's getting BSOD quite often and some coworkers even went through 3 or 4 before getting a working model.

Used X230 on eBay for 189€ ($205).
The buyers guide lists it at $350, should I buy it anyways? The merchant on eBay has a ton of positive ratings.
>>
>>57172145
Positive ratings dont really mean shit, but if you buy over PayPal and the seller fucks you over, eBay will always side with you.

Think I'm going to get a projector, what is the Thinkpad of projectors? Just want 1080p and possibly the ability to adjust audio delay.

I can testify, my X201 has the X200s 1440x900 installed. The front of that display is also flatter. It does not have the protruding "bar" at the bottom over the indicator lamps for WLAN, disk, power, etc. And I've been told it has some form of a small roll cage inside. It does feel sturdier than my 1280*800 but I have not opened it to check. Also, 1440x900 is LED only and never comes in a CCFL variant, and is always 250 nits.

>>57158825
Not the other anon, on my X61T it did exactly that in a popout window. Every full-height WLAN card I've tried has been total garbage in X-series laptops, especially slimmer ones. I was testing with the palmrest off and it took most of the old Centrino and Atheros cards only 30 seconds to get uncomfortably hot. Intel 6205 and 6300 are your best friends.
>>
>>57162073
>And this, folks, is why you do not buy from anywhere other than eBay, possibly Craigslist if you can actually see the machine and get a good price on it

I once ordered a T60p on amazon and was sent a T61p with a bad GPU. When I asked about false advertising, the seller began calling me euphemisms for "ungrateful asshole" and asking why I was wary of getting a later model, even though I explained the issue with rev1 and rev2 GPUs to him.
Instead of living with getting shafted, I just resold the T61p the honest way, made a couple dollars of profit, and got an X201.

I won't go into the story about a company attempting to charge me an absurd amount of money to return a Chinese X200T battery I got when I ordered a X61T battery. Amazon is fucking garbage and they use USPS which is for no-talent fat idiots who can't pursue a real job.
>>
>>57163990
5-10?! I've been testing out Broadwell and Skylake laptops this year and the best ones are almost indistinguishable from my T420 other than being able to use less energy in suspend. They keep making the batteries/chassis thinner and it's just going to negate all the CPU efficiency improvements.
>anecdotal shit
I tried a 2015 MacBook Pro with an i7 and it was total junk, which shocked me. 16GB RAM and a 2880*1800 display driven by Iris Pro, PCIe SSD, yet it moved like molasses and overheated while copying files around. My MacBook Air didn't do this, and my Hackintosh sure doesn't do it.

On the other hand, I would be upgrading every year if laptops had case layout/size standards allowing us to make an X40 with a MacBook Air 2016's motherboard inside of it.

So I got this old R61 thinkpad with the ol' Proof of License sticker from Microsoft on the back.
I can read the product key great and all, but damn me if I can read what OS it's for.
How do I find out? I got a hunch it could be Vista Home -something- just from the amount of smudges present. BUT it says 2005 on the license and 61 thinkpads were released a bit later I think.
Is it worth installing this Vista? Can I somehow upgrade the license?
Thanks

I found T430 for 375 $
and T420 for 305 $

They both have 120GB SSD, 1600x900 res and 8GB ram.
Is it worth it to pay 70$ more for T30?

Any canucks know of a place that's good for buying ram?

Looks like I'm stuck buying from newegg but the prices are ridiculous. Only brand of 16 gb for an x220 that's relatively decently priced is called mushkin.

I'm not sure what brands are worth it when it comes to RAM.
>>
>>57176487
Sorry, I'm very new to ebay. You think that price will be bid up alot? 'Cause right now the laptop's like half the price of the processor alone

>>57176517
Yes. view sold listings and choose i7 2nd gen for processor type. They go for ~$100
>>
>>57176470
Are there any quad cores that fit in the t420 socket, though?

Either....depends on if you want an SSD H/drive. I've never own a Computer with an SSD so I can't comment on how much better they are compared to SATA.

SATA H/drives are quick enough for what I do.

>>57175116
Dude whenever I have a problem with something from Amazon I just send it back. So what if one of their third party sellers calls you names? Grow a fucking backbone.

>>57176451
I've actually been thinking of these as an alternative to the xx40 Thinkpads. I like the dedicated volume buttons and the general lack of asinine design decisions. Battery life is meaningless to me since I have a T500 which lasts maybe 10 or 15 minutes on a charge (had the computer since it was two years old, and it's the original 2009 battery). The IPS screen alone is a major selling point.

>>57176720
Even W series with the 55W CPUs get really hot.

Any of you reapplied thermal paste before? I have a t530 with a dGPU and I am going to reapply thermal paste tomorrow since the CPU gets up to 70 C. When I take off the heatsink pipe, do I also need to reapply paste to the part that covers the GPU?

Owncloud or something you host yourself.

>>57179952
Yes
>>
>>57179952
yes you need to re paste both
although 70c under load is really good, and even if it's not full load (just a decently heavy load) that's really good.
