IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I don't know what I fucked up.

I reapplied thermal past to CPU, left thermal pad on PCH, restarted. At first CPU temps stayed at 85-95C, but it turns out it's because windows was running updates. I restart the machine, and it's idling at 40 and goes to 50C when watching my FHD 10bit tentacle fetish chink cartoons. I'm ecstatic, I thought I was going to have to trash it soon.
I'm prompted for a battery firmware update, sure why not, run it. It fails halfway through, ok, no problem, continue what I was doing.

I shut it off for the night. The next morning it won't even post. The bluetooth and wifi status leds blink accompanied by a constant beeping. The laptop doesn't seem to charge or turn on.

I leave for work, come back, try again, nothing. I remove the battery, and this time it doesn't do shit, ded.

I remove everything, disconnect power, do the 10 count power button press with the thirty second hold. Still dead. I put the battery back in and connect power. Doesn't do shit but this time the LED light indicates it's charging. It was orange, now it's green. I'll try turning it on again in a bit.

My RAM just came in today, this guy was gonna be my little beast. Any ideas to revive it?
If I'm not drunk later, I'll probably try taking it apart again.

My iPhone is an idiot and won't connect to my X201's USB ports. I had a photo of the T60p 15.4", T420, X201 with X200s screen, and X61T with SXGA screen. Honorable mentions: a bunch of old shit including a fully functional Mac SE/30

My T60p's palm rest is a badly molded piece of shit that bulges out, and I was thinking of just sticking a trackpad-less R61e 15.4" palmrest on there instead. Does anyone know what the little piece of plastic that covers the (nonexistent) SD slot on the T60/T60p 15.4" models looks like? I think I misplaced mine and I moved in August.

After reading the guide, I've narrowed my choices down to two:

>HP EliteBook 8730w
>Dell Precision M6400

I like the W700 quite a bit, but I'd prefer to spend under $300

The most demanding thing I'd be doing is running Skyrim (mid settings) on Fedora 25

Which is the superior tank, /g/?
>>
>>57187230
I'll try Xubuntu instead of Lubuntu. Heard a lot of good stuff about it.
>>
>>57187520
the 8730w is 2old man, get the 8740w if you want an elitebook. the only thing i will say about elitebooks is that they cant take water for shit, dont even get a splash of water on them, because it will kill the cunt, trust me.

skip dells, their trackpoints are shit, their screens are shit, and their wrist rests will dig into your wrists painfully over time.

My x61 is getting a little dusty, any tips for thinkpad cleaning?

How do I assign touchpad on my t420 to dedicated scrolling?
trackpoint already serves as a pointer and the tp is just lying there, actually what different use can you make of it?

>>
>>57180955
OK thanks.
>>
I have a x220i with windows 10 where the trackpad and pointer stopped working. Actually anything related to mouse input built in stopped working just suddenly. The keyboard works, but not pointer mouse buttons or touch pad.
I tried reinstalling drivers but nothing, I checked device manager at it said there was some problems and it might be because it's not connected.
Funny thing is keyboard works fine and USB mice.
I took the keyboard out and reseated the cables, still nothing. I replaced the entire keyboard with a keyboard from a second x220i I have, still nothing.

Very strange. Any suggestions? I have yet to try and replace the touchpad from my second x220i and see what happens.

To be fair, the T400 has the last generation Core2Duos. The Merom thinkpads are a lot less powerful.

I love my T400 though. Stupidly reliable and fast for the price. A souped up one isn't too much slower than some first gen I5s.

On another note: does anyone know if it's possible to shove a quad core in this laptop? I've read conflicting advice and I'm not sure. Is the T9900 much faster than my current CPU?

How retarded would it be to buy a X230 even though i already have a T430?

>>
>>57191605
The t430 will probably be more powerful than the x230 you are considering (check CPU benchmarks and whether your t430 has a discrete GPU). The x230 feels nicer to carry, but for me it's actually uncomfortable physically to use it on my lap (I'm a big guy and have to bring my legs closer together than what is natural to keep my x220 from falling down). Beyond that, it's more of a qeustion on whether you are okay spending money you don't really need to spend in order to get a little more comfort in your life.
>>
>>57191731
ill keep my T430, i have a trolley anyways i have to take to school so meh.
>>
>>57191817
Probably the better choice. Honestly, the t430 is only two inches bigger than the x230 (if I remember correctly). Wouldn't be worth the money for me, unless you are loaded and are fine spending money. By the way, what do you use your thinkpad for?

I guess this means I'll be holding onto my x200 for a while longer maybe I'll even purchase a t420 for editing media. I hear the keyboard on the BlazeIt is responsive and has great feedback. Now if only there was a manufacturer refurb with a 1600x900 screen, I'd be all on it like white on rice.
>>
>>57193795
why dont you just get the T430?

chiclet is amating, its all a fucking meme, dude.
>>
>>57193795
>Now if only there was a manufacturer refurb with a 1600x900 screen, I'd be all on it like white on rice.
I bought a cheap 1366x768 T420 and did the replacement by myself.

The 900p screen with the hd+ cable are cheap enough and by selling the 1366x768 screen on craigslist you can get some shekels back.
>>
>>57193044
lmao that was me. I posted in /tpg/ yesterday or the day before that the retro wasn't happening. I don't have any source for it, but I'm like 99% sure that it will not happen. It cannot possibly be profitable for lenovo to make one for such a niche market. screenshot this and if it does ever happen I'll make a video of me smashing my t420 with a hammer.

i3wm can run on way less than that. My N270 single core atom runs i3wm flawlessly.

Why is that?

From what I read, it seems that the battery options are better for the 220. Other than that, I couldn't find much else different.

Yes, they even come with the cable and all.

T420 or T430, pick your poison.
>>
>>57197637
Sounds like you want shit tons of power in a small footprint. I just ordered a T460p. Got mine fully loaded with the discount in this thread. 14" 2560x1440 IPS display, 2GB Nvidia 940MX discrete graphics, i7 6820HQ all in a 14" machine was the sweet spot for me. You'll see it's one of the best bang for the buck machines in their lineup.....not much more expensive than a specced out regular T460 and actually cheaper than a specced out X260 lol. Also reviews have been good
>>
>>57197649
Awesome! Will order one pretty soon. My x220 is still pretty barebones, with the shitty TN panel and a crappy old HDD. Can't wait to turn it into a portable powerhouse
>>
>>57197745
While i don't understand the fascination with a FP reader, if you get one et a KingDian mSATA ssd from there as well so you can have 2 drives on your x220.

Anybody have experience with an x220t for reading manga? I sort of just bought an i5 model on impulse for this and am starting to wonder if I made a mistake. I mean, I can still use it as a regular computer, but I already have an i7 T420 for that.

I somehow ended up with a Dell Latitude C510/C610 for free but I honestly can't find a single thing about this. What can I do with it? This thing must be almost 20 years old. If it was a D series I could make do but there's nothing on these old things.

Thunderbolt, ngff, msata and expresscard.

Reposting from last thread

First time posting here in a while, but just a question about my X220.
Atm I have a clean Windows 7 install, but I decided I wanted to dual boot with Manjaro. I can clear up room for a partition just fine, but when I try to actually create it and install Manjaro I get an error.

Anyone got any ideas as to what the deal may be? For what it's worth, I'm using an SSD.
>>
>>57197776
It's pure convenience, of course. The x220 is mainly an after-work couch-programming device for me. I'll bring it to meetings and conferences occasionally, but it will rarely leave my home in general. There's just no reason to type so many passwords, but on the other hand, I don't want to run as a too priviliged user either, in case I catch something.

Is the speed difference between the SATA3 & SATA2 ports noticeable in daily use? I thought about getting a beefy 2,5" SSD and filling the mSATA slot with a 3g modem (which would be a solution waiting for a problem, though)

If there's no real difference, though, a storage HDD + a good primary SSD would be more reasonable
>>
>>57197827
Hmmm. Maybe install a really lightweight Linux distro on it for fun? I can't really think of anything else but it's a start
>>
>>57197879
>Is the speed difference between the SATA3 & SATA2 ports noticeable in daily use?
Not at all unless you transfer or write big files on a regular basis.

>3g modem
This seems redundant imo when you can just do tethering from your smartphone.
>>
>>57197965
>This seems redundant imo when you can just do tethering from your smartphone.
Yes, good point

I was just getting carried away by the fact that I am *sure* that I'll be perfectly fine with <500gb of storage on this machine. It will never hold movies, games or even more than a couple of photo albums. I only need OpenMW and my dev stuff on it. So I thought one of both slots is basically free.

Too bad there's nothing really interesting you can to with an mSATA slot
>>
>>57198015
Eh i'd still go with an mSATA 128 or 256gb SSD, leaves the option for another drive if you need it in the future.
>>
>>57197827
Funny enough I used a C610 in high school. It's not quite 20 years old but I think my dad bought it in 2001 and then gave it to me in late 2005. It was a great computer at the time... 1400x1050 display, ATI mobility radeon, 512 megs of RAM. The thing actually ran Rome: Total War and Sim City 4 decently well.

In some ways, the T400 I bought for University was a bit of a downgrade since I lost 150 piexels of precious vertical screen real estate. And I actually didn't like the keyboard as much as the C610's- those keys have a FUCKLOAD of travel.

So, I'm getting my first laptop, already have a decent PC so I guess I'm going for a 12.5-13.3" model.
I have a few models in mind, which one is the best? They're all around the same price.
A Wacom layer is a huge plus.

Thinkpad X220 Tablet (12.5" 1366x768, i7-2640M, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD)
HP EliteBook 2760p Tablet (12.5" 1280x800, i5-2520M, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD)
Dell Latitude E6320 (13.3" 1366x768, i7-2620M, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD)
Dell Latitude E6220 (12.5" 1366x768, i5-2520M, 3GB DDR3, 128GB SSD)

I'd upgrade the RAM to 8GB and install an SSD on any of them, and replace the battery if needed.

M6400 is the most GPU upgradable, it has a discrete HSF too, 8730w has one big one on the left
Also the M6400 supports two HDDs, 8740w doesn't, W700 has two.

I used to play LoL on highest on my W700ds, youtube vids on the second screen, the FX3700m didn't like video rendering, or it was the Core 2 Quad's problem.

The 8740w I have right now has a sort of keyboard feedback I'm not used to, feels bouncy. I don't mind the M6400's keyboard.

Out of all of them...
I think the 8740w has the best screen, even moreso if you can find a DreamColor unit.

The i3 should be plenty of power for what you need to do. Supposedly there's an i5 version of the machine, I think I saw it on the PSREF to confirm it.

It had good battery life.
Other than the display and thicker case (I like how robust it is for the loss of portability), the main thing is typing on it when its on your lap is not fun.
After long use, my wrists hurt because you don't have that much palmrest space due to the keyboard being pushed a bit forward to fit the battery.

Well funnily enough none of us care that we are using 1366x768 and quite frankly, none of us need a bigger resolution. It would make pretty much no difference to me.

Why can't you just leave us alone when we are clearly happy with what we have. Stop projecting your insecurities about having 'the best' hardware and go somewhere else. Clearly you have some self image issues if you're going into daily's calling people cucks.

Which method did you use?

GSP is expensive as fuck, takes forever and uses Russian post which is known for constantly losing/damaging packages, although it got better in past few years, it's still kind of gamble

Some people suggest using mail forwarders because it's cheaper, safer and faster but using a mail forwarder means there's no responsible party at all

What do you mean by "autism factor"? is it the thinkpad logo?

Yeah some people might think of the Thinkpad logo as being like someone wearing a bunch of stuff with the Razer gaming logo on it or an Alienware gaming backpack or something to that effect. At first I thought you were only asking about the way it looked. But anyway I think it looks great but if I were you I would look up reviews and see if it's built properly and has protection for your Thinkpad and lots of pockets etc.

Typing this on a E6430 that I picked up sometime in June. It's plugged into a dock, currently driving 3 monitors.

I highly recommend it. I picked this thing up for $130 on eBay. Included a charger and a 9 cell battery.

My i5-3340M is very capable-- runs VMs like a dream with KVM. The CPU is socketed, though. Maybe someday I'll throw an i7 quad in here.

It came with like 4G ram or something. I put 16GB in for ~$50.

Took out the HDD drive, replaced it with another HDD bay, put 2 SSD's in here in a RAID-1.

All-in-all I'm less than $300 in the hole for this setup, including the dock and charger and battery and ssd and ram and so on.

It plays CS:GO, the only game I ever play, at 100FPS at 1024x768. Good enough for me! People on techinferno have purchased $60 expresscard devices and have had success at getting this thing to do an eGPU at 2.2x. So if games are your thing, for $60 + $150 for a 1050TI, you can probably play games on this thing at a reasonable framerate. Coupled with vPro and VT-d, it's probably possible to do this without even rebooting (not sure.)

Highly recommended.

Only regret I have is that this thing has a 1366x768 screen. I've seen displays on eBay for $40, and I'll probably pick one up soon.

>>
>>57212543
From what I've seen of the T430 it's a pretty pricey (comparitively) laptop.
T420 is cheaper normally but at $110 that's great.
If you win the bid war.
>>
>>57212707

>>
>>57212791
I fucking hate ebay bidding desu, T420's are good though, it depends what you're using it for, more than anything.
Just keep an eye on newly listed ebay for buy now stuff, it's what I do.
>>
>>57212707
I've found that t430's usually go for $20-$50 more than t420s
So instead of getting a perfect condition t420 you could get a slightly dinged up t430 for the same price.
Plus the gpu upgrade is huge, so going from a t420 with nvs 4200m to just hd 4000 would be a nice improvement.
>>
>>57212891
T420's have 2 motherboards, one does have a Nvidia NVS 4200M
They have something like 1gb GDDR but they're not that good from what I hear, the models are also a pain in the ass to find.
If the T430 is anything like that there will be 2 motherboards, one with intel graphics and one with the nvidia graphics.
>>
>>57212912
yeah it is
hd 4000 alone is slightly faster than my friends nvs 4200m, and the nvs 5400m is light years better than the 4200m.
The only downside is that mine throttles like a bitch under full load (or just playing some intensive games)
It makes my macbook pro look like it's running cool.

>>
>>57212934
Yeah intel HD graphics are pretty garbo for that kind of stuff but I don't think you should be expecting much from the T430 either, what kind of games are you expecting to play?
>>

None of the think pads are real think pads. Real ThinkPads died in 2007 when IBM stopped overseeing Lenovo's production of the thinkpad line.
>>
>>57212959
Well I've tried civ 6 on hd 4000, and I get 30-20 fps depending on the zoom in strategic view, and 10-25 in normal view.
The bottleneck seems to mostly be on the cpu, so I haven't bothered turning on the dgpu since it will just make the cpu throttle down.
GTA 5 runs at 40-60 fps with shadows off and all low 1600x900 before it throttles.
Haven't really messed with any other intensive games because of the throttling, plus I have my macbook or my desktop for gaming
>>
>>57213031
Gave CIV 5 a quick go on the t420 just now, it feels like 15-20 fps, it's not great but intel HD.
Speaking of CPU's what's the best CPU is for the 420 before thermal throttling cripples it?
>>
>>57213264
>Speaking of CPU's what's the best CPU is for the 420 before thermal throttling cripples it?
Dual core? The best cpu it was shipped with was the i7-2640M.
Quad core? I'd say 2670qm or 2720qm but nothing further.

Source? There's a video on youtube of a dude installing a 2670qm on a t420 with acceptable temps and there's an anon that always posts his t420 with a 2720qm and looks fine so i guess that's the highest cpu you could use on it without exploding.

How are the newer thinkpads compared to other consumerist garbage in the market?

I basically need a new laptop but can't get a refurbished one cuz India, I only need it for programming and running android studio, but since everything in $300-$400 is consumerist garbage I thought I'll just spend some extra and get a durable machine. Max budget is $500, any recommendations?

Does anyone remember about a year ago there was rumor of some hardware developer talking about selling newer designed motherboard for like an i7 in the t40/ t60 series chassis? I tried scraping up that old thread but haven't had luck. Just wondering if anything became of it. Rocking my t60p without issues on Windows 10/ Ubuntu but I can't help but imagine how nice a newer platform would be with this godlike keyboard and general design.

No? Prefer it to my other plinkpads, W541 does weird shit where it randomly jumps while typing which is a bit shit when I basically type out large segments of code without looking at the IDE.
T540p is better but still fucking annoying with clicking.

x220t is pretty good in comparison also I like the texture.

I am looking for a Korean keyboard replacement for my w541 which should be the same as in the t540/w540 etc. So far I only found one listing on ebay which expired and some old page on IBM which may offer it, but the page looks shady and straight out of 2003.

Checked various Chinese and Korean auction sites but all of them seem to offer the Us kind only.

Buying replacement parts shouldn't be this hard right?

Can I pry it out without completely tearing the laptop apart?
>>
>>57212947
If you want a new Thinkpad that small, then get either a 12" X260 X1 Carbon or one of the 14" T series. Honestly I wouldn't trust anything other than T X or P series Thinkpads. All the other versions are either built to meet a much lower price or its a sort of "experimental" machine with more mainstream construction and features for normies
>>
>>57214751
They are much better than consumer junk.
They still offer good repair ability and hot swappable batteries. Just be sure to stick with T X or P series to get the best and most traditional Thinkpad features

I own a Thinkpad T520 laptop running windows 7.

There is some setting which keeps auto-adjusting my brightness levels to the colors on the screen. I thought this was a problem with Intel Control Center so I checked it, but strangely enough auto brightness wasnt an option in the program. So I uninstalled Intel Control Center, but the brightness keeps changing.

Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? I imagine that it is probably the result of some bloatware program on this PC.

In case it matters, here is a speccy.
