First time using Ubuntu. I have a big red stop sign on the top right that goes:

>An error occured, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount > 0'. This usually means that your packages have unmet dependencies

Any ideas?

>tfw can't change interface language on arch, xfce4
help
typing "locale" shows that all variables are set to my country's language, but I want the interface language(LANG) to be english.
I uncommented en_US.UTF-8 in the /etc/locale.gen file and ran 'locale-gen' so it's generated.
Then, I've set the /etc/locale.conf file asfollowing:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=hr_HR.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=hr_HR.UTF-8

but still everything switched back to hr, and when entering 'locale' command it shows that all variables are set to hr.
I don't see any file in ~/.config/ that would overwrite this, not even in the xfce4 subfolders.
So what the fuck is going on?

Hi, for use Japanese input method, fcitx-mozc is most simple way.

1 Install packages for Japanese input method (e.g. fcitx-mozc).

sudo pacman -S fcitx-mozc fcitx-gtk2 fcitx-gtk3 fcitx-qt4 fcitx-qt5 fcitx-configtool

2 Open ~/.xprofile and add following lines.
export LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8"
export XMODIFIERS="@im=fcitx"
export XMODIFIER="@im=fcitx"
export GTK_IM_MODULE=fcitx
export QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx
export DefaultIMModule=fcitx

3 If needed, open ~/.bashrc and add following lines

export GTK_IM_MODULE=fcitx`
export XMODIFIERS=@im=fcitx`
export QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx`

4 Restart your system. you can change input mode by using Ctrl + Space key.

About Japanese font, ttf-droid is on official repository. I usually use ttf-vlgothic (AUR package).

Can someone please tell me how to setup a scrot keyboard command so it lets me select a region and I also have the save directory specified?
I have the regular screenshot working with

scrot -e 'mv $f /home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/'

but when I try adding in the modifier for region selection like this

scrot -s -e 'mv $f /home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/'

it just doesn't work.

I've never understood why people take a screenshot with scrot and THEN move it when you can just do this:

scrot -s '/home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S_$wx$h_scrot.png'

Edit the name accordingly, that's the default one. I just use a %s timestamp.
>>

>>
>>57094076
>implying Linux works different from disto to distro
>>
>>57094162
well when I was using Mint I kind of just used everything that it came with.

Also, the solution you posted didn't seem to work.
For some reason, even if I just try entering
 scrot -s
into a key binding it won't work at all.
>>
>>57094076
Good luck anon
>>
>>57093931
>
scrot -e 'mv $f /home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/'

That's so massivly retarded, I've no words. Why executing an additional provess to move a file when you can save the file directly?

scrot -s ~/Pictures/Screenshots/$(date +%s).png
>>
>>57094221
I originally had that because it was the example in the man pages for scrot.

But anyway, it seems that putting scrot -s anywhere as a keybinding doesn't work for me.
Currently, I have
scrot -s '/home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S_$wx$h_scrot.png'
bound to ctrl+PrtSc, but when I press those keys nothing happens.
If I run the same command without the -s it works fine.
>>
>>57094221
slowpoke, see >>57094068

>>
>>57094235
try putting a sleep 1; in front of it (I'm curious if it's what I think)
>>
>>57094199
That has something to do with some key bindings activating on keyup or on keydown, what are you using for keybinds? I remember running into that problem with i3 but I don't use it anymore.
>>
>>57094268
Found it. If you're using i3 try using the --release flag.

>Some tools (such as import or xdotool) might be unable to run upon a KeyPress event, because the keyboard/pointer is still grabbed. For these situations, the --release flag can be used, which will execute the command after the keys have been released.

https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html#keybindings
>>
>>57094268
I'm using xfce, so that's also handling the key bindings.
When I was using xfce4-screenshooter that combination of keys works fine for region selection.

>>57094261
I have this entered now

sleep 1 | scrot -s '/home/anon/Pictures/Screenshots/%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S_$wx$h_scrot.png'

Still not working. If I type this straight into a terminal it works fine though, which is strange. It's just when i try binding it that it does nothing.

>>57094341

>>
>>57094340
The | is for piping things from one command to another which isn't what you're doing and won't actually delay the following command you want to use "sleep 1 && scrot..." or "sleep 1; scrot..."

>>57094341
>xbindkeys has the same problem, here the solution is also Mod Key Release.
I switched from i3 to bspwm and sxhkd doesn't have that problem which is nice.
>>
>>57094384
>Would that solution help at all if I'm not using i3? Like I mentioned previously I'm using xfce.

Try it? :^) If it works, lower the sleep until it breaks (like sleep 0.5 or sleep 0.1 or sleep 0.01) one second is really really long.

So what? If you use more KDE tools, then it is not wasted.

When you have used the KDE filepicker, you cannot go back though.
It is like the people who made it either use a computer themselves or know someone who does.
A shame Qt does not just include the features in their file picker so you don't need the KDE extensions.

well guys, i finally decided to take the plunge and install gentoo. Im on the part where i have to download the stage tarball...there is a million to choose from and the only thing the handbook says is to install a multilib.

tl;dr how do i know which stage file to download for my amd64 gentoo installation?
>>
I didn't pay a lot of attention to the hubbub over Sourceforge's trustworthiness. Is it safe to download a distro from it? Also, is it a good practice to find checksums for an ISO from multiple sources? Like, if a site with ISO links got hacked I assume the attacker would change the checksums listed.
>>
I will never understand the gentoo meme

Gentoo has the best documentation and install manual for a competent novice user. I haven't seen more user friendly hand holding documentation in any other distro including Debian and Arch. Not only is the install manual fantastic but tons of packages are perfectly documented in a novice digestible format, including explanations on the most popular uses. Install gentoo

There are still people who fail at it. Probably not so competent novice users.

I mean, if you want to use GNU/Linux seriously it's the best place to start.

>>
>>57095927
It doesn't matter which distro you use, if you want to use an OS "seriously" you have to do something serious with it, and that goes far beyond the installation and maintaining of the system.
>>
>>57095955
if you can't do a simple Gentoo installation you're not going to be doing anything serious anytime soon anyway

You can learn all the important basics from installing Gentoo. It's really the most efficient way since you have a well documented centralized source of knowledge at your disposal
>>
>>57095554
you would do "emerge -auDN @world"

you should just install funtoo instead and follow the install guide, it's way more beginner friendly and they provide stage3 tarballs preoptimized for your CPU architecture, no worrying about multilib shit.

Different anon, but off the top of my head (mind, I'm an Arch user, and I'm about 2 years rusty):
boot configuration, kernel modules, DE/WM/X11, hardware drivers, account setup, encryption (if applicable), how to build from source efficiently, and how to manage different software packages, at least.

Running ubuntu 16.10 on my laptop with the 4.8.x kernel. System not waking up from suspend. Where should i look for issues? laptop is lenovo z50-70 i7-4510U + GT840m(noveau drivers) This is not specific to ubuntu 16.10 as i had same problem with 14.04 and 16.04.

One thing to note if its any help is that when trying to wake up from suspend the external monitor powers on but still black screen while laptop main screen stays completely turned off. Tested both with/without the external monitor.

Some occasions the sleep has worked in the past..

What's the easiest and modern way to set up email (IMAP, SMTP)? There's just so much software and I have no idea
>>
Hello guys, I am having trouble with my VPN set up on a fresh Debian install. When I select to import a saved VPN connection the dialog box and network manager simply close with nothing changed, am I goofing some how or is this an issue with Debian? I did not have this issue with Fedora yesterday
>>
>>57096703
The most standard thing to do is to use Zoho mail with your own domain. And then use Thunderbird. But Ubuntu now has a new standard program for email instead of Thunderbird so you could use that as well.
>>
>>57096703
Coincidentally, I'm in the middle of taking a break setting up my own email server on a dedicated server with Debian. I've been following along with this, which happens to be oriented around Ubuntu:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/02/how-to-run-your-own-e-mail-server-with-your-own-domain-part-1/

Setting up mail servers is a nightmare, but I knew this before I started.

>Setting up mail servers is a nightmare, but I knew this before I started.
I know, I tried before and failed ...

most of the stuff in the article I have already set up or are not an issue, i.e. domain, DNS, postgres, setting up roundcube

But it's the actual email server part that always gets me. Alias configured wrong, alias configured twice in different files, need to run another command to update config..

Thanks though, looks like a good tutorial

Did you read the description for the kubuntu-full package before you installed it?

I think kubuntu-full is just for existing kubuntu installs, to install everything on the kubuntu DVD/ISO instead of the basic/normal install.

I can't think of another reason why it didn't pull in all the other packages/dependencies it needed automatically.

Just do a

sudo apt-get update

Then

sudo apt-get install -f

That should fix the problem and install all the other required packages.

You might want to use the software center or synaptic(instead of the terminal) to install stuff until you get the hang of things.

The microcode data file for Linux contains the latest microcode definitions for all Intel processors.

Intel releases microcode updates to correct processor behavior as documented in the respective processor specification updates.

While the regular approach to getting this microcode update is via a BIOS upgrade, Intel realizes that this is an administrative hassle.

The Linux Operating System has a mechanism to update the microcode after booting the OS.

So is there a good Total Commander style file manager that's feature rich, fast, light and has small amount of dependencies?

I like Krusader, it has tons of features and is nice to use but that's far from light and makes me install all the KDE libs which I don't want to do just for the file manager. I have a monitor and a TV on my graphics card. Both 1080p and mirrored, so it should just show the same. Worked under Windows but with Linux has the TV on the right and on the button 40-50 pixel missing. So a part is not visible.
Using Linux Mint 18 64 Cinnamon with a GTX960. The monitor is with DVI connected and the TV with HDMI. Drivers are the proprietary one. Driver Version: 361.42

I tried everything in the Nvidia settings but nothing helped so far. Or do I use the option in pic related wrong? I can make that the TV shows the whole desktop but then is the monitor too small.
The TV looks awful btw but this isn't the primary problem.

Anyone else have a problem where pulseaudio sink numbers change after changing the config profile through pavucontrol? My volume control buttons stop working until restart, or if I switch my volume keybind from
pactl set-sink-volume 1 +5%
to
pactl set-sink-volume 3 +5%

That did it. Booted with drive back in and removed entry from fstab. Rebooted without drive and it's all gravy

I don't do it to conserve space, I do it to reduce effort/motion on my eyes and cursor.

Task bar on top logic:
Most elements of most windows are located at the top of the window. As a result, your eyes and cursor are often active at the top area of the screen. If you have your taskbar on the bottom of the screen, then your eyes and cursor have to move to the bottom of the screen, and then back up to the top in order to focus on those primarily-at-the-top window elements. When the taskbar is on top, then nearly everything is on top and you have less distance to cross to see/get what you want more often.

Conserving horizontal space isn't necessary unless you feel restricted or require more room for X task. When I've tried having the taskbar on the left or right, it just felt off-center and weird. Maybe if we had vertically-oriented eyes, I would feel comfortable with a vertical task bar. Ultimately the taskbar can be on any side of the screen and it's a completely subjective matter.

I'm new to this general, so sorry if I break any taboos, but I have a low powered system,(Lga 775 cpu, 8300gs gpu) that I'm building, so would lubuntu be good for me, considering I have never before used Linux.

I thought they where all dead. I had used one for fedora before but it looks like they all went stagnate because of efi.

this would be fine for a stream a few hours long but this is a continuous stream that is watched ~14hrs a day so it becomes inconvenient to store and seek over that much content to return to a previous moment, especially when the moments of most interest to the viewer are usually a few seconds/minutes before whatever is live

It would be convenient if there was an option return to the last 5 minutes and be able to seek to them right from the GUI time bar and then jump back to live mode. I guess this is too specific, unpopular or difficult to properly implement, but I can't be the first one to want this feature.
