Anyone else have a problem where pulseaudio sink numbers change after changing the config profile through pavucontrol? My volume control buttons stop working until restart, or if I switch my volume keybind from pactl set-sink-volume 1 +5% to pactl set-sink-volume 3 +5%

My Debian testing install randomly powers off, the screen turns black and the whole computer unresponsive and it powers off after 15 seconds or so of the screen going black. The computer goes completely unresponsive (no altgr+printscreen+k, no changing to a text console). This always happens when typing something in the keyboard.

When that happens the last thing in /var/log/messages is garbage (see screenshot). How would one go around debugging that?

With shutdown, you can specify a wall message, and add time.
But they're both symlinks to systemctl

But I have a problem. I've installed Ubuntu on my desktop, but multi-monitors doesn't work as intended :

Setup :

>Monitors 2 ans 3 on the graphic card (nVidia 560 Ti), via DVI and VGA.
I can't plug them all on the GC because of the ports.

After the first install, monitors 2 and 3 works slowly, and 1 was recognized on the settings panels but didn't display anything (remain black)
I installed the Intel HD Graphics drivers, It didn't do anything.
Then I've installed the nVidia drivers (and disabled Nouveau) : 2 and 3 now runs smoothly, but 1 is not recognized on the setting panel at all.

Any idea how to achieve this 3-way display ? It works fine on windows. (multi display thing is enabled in the BIOS).

Super newbie questions: how does one typically get software on a distro that doesn't have its own software repo? Do you usually compile from the source? Where do you even find the programs, google and github? Are incompatibilities between packages common? And is that something you can fix or do you just go without one of the packages?

>how does one typically get software on a distro that doesn't have its own software repo?
Most distributions have their own repositories and package manager.

>Do you usually compile from the source?
You can always compile software from source but sometimes there's simpler alternatives, for example Google Chrome and Steam have their own repositories, VMware and TeamSpeak have their own installation scripts.

>Where do you even find the programs, google and github?
It depends.

>Are incompatibilities between packages common?
There are some exceptions but since you're new let's just say packages are package manager specific.

>And is that something you can fix or do you just go without one of the packages?
I'm don't understand what you are asking here.

Here's what I would do in practice.

>how does one typically get software on a distro that doesn't have its own software repo?
I'm not sure what you mean by this, since every distro has repositories. But for the sake of the rest of the post, I assume this means how to get software that's missing from your distro's repositories?

1. You look for a third party repository that has it packaged. This means stuff like the AUR, gentoo overlays, ubuntu PPAs etc. 99% of times, if something is missing from the official repos it will be available in some third-party repo

2. If this fails, it sort of depends on what my use case is. If I only want to try something out, I'll just build it in-tree and run the binary from the build folder, without actually installing it. (Littering up my system with out-of-tree garbage is a huge NO-NO)

3. If I decide that I want to have it around permanently, I package it myself and then install it through my package manager like everything else.

>Do you usually compile from the source?
My package manager compiles all programs from source.

>Where do you even find the programs, google and github?
Pretty much. Some of the larger non-github projects also have github mirrors, and I'll prefer building from those where available.

>Are incompatibilities between packages common?
Only for old, outdated, bitrotten software. If a conflict ever arises, it's virtually *always* going to be of this form:

>modern version of software A requires X at version 3.20 or higher
>old-ass-shit version of software B requires X at version 2.*
In this case, you get a dependency conflict at version X. The solution for me is always to get rid of the old-ass shit that's holding me back.

Also, some package managers can have multiple versions of X c oexisting peacefully (e.g. portage to some extent, Nix or Guix completely), so that might be another option.

Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.

echo is not standardized, it will behave differently on different systems. In fact, on some systems echo is a simple symlink to a script which calls printf. While echo works, printf is better practice. More about printf's power: http://wiki.bash-hackers.org/commands/builtin/printf

nothing. everything replaced by systemd has a perfectly suitable alternative that is stable and manageable for decades. i honestly do not understand why people defend red hat's embrace, extend, extinguish approach to the linux ecosystem, they are no different than Microsoft and they do not have the average desktop linux user in mind with the changes they're politicking into play. they want a homogeneous ecosystem that they can sell to the govt + any other bidder.

Dash is a minimal POSIX shell that sticks to the standard (which doesn't have -n). Actually bites me quite often because for some reason programms love to use

systemd user here, these are the reasons I prefer systemd over OpenRC:
>user services
>session/seat tracking
>socket activation
>suspend/hibernate (pm-utils was a nightmare)
>monotonic timers / random timers
>automatic daemon restarting
>service-based process tracking and management (via cgroups)
>usable logging interface (journalctl)
>service file overrides

If you can get me how to get OpenRC to feature parity with systemd I wouldn't mind switching back again, but as it stands the alternatives are simply lacking

I want to play with a tiling WM /fglt/ and I was trying out Xmonad
but its basically unusable unless you enjoy spending hours (read: weeks) setting up a suitable config
(I was planing on using Xmonad + Xfce but that ship has sailed)

I only use my laptop for Firefox, mpv, emacs and a virtual machine of Win8.1 for Office

send halp, I usually just use Cinnamon or Xfce but I would like to try something different.

Why doesn't releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/SHA256SUMS use SSL? Isn't that a security flaw? How am I supposed to get a trusted checksum?
>>
>>57108201
I like how awesome comes out of the box, if you've never programmed in your life it might be a little hard to configure though.

thanks for the reply
I have used Awesome and Openbox before, and I agree; awesome is on the top of my list so far
just wanted to get the /fglt/ opinion on WM's after the "Xmonad disaster"
>>
>>57108325
Can you explain how? I'm not trolling.
>>
>>57108411
https quarantees that the site you visit is the site you visit. http can be spoofed by many ways. it doesn't really matter if a cd image is available with or without ssl as long as the place where you get the checksums is a secured place.

that said, it doesn't really matter on ubuntu since it's full of proprietary code anyway which is the same security hole in a different color

(that said, I see at the directory are gpg keys)

I see, then why are the repositories always http? I don't know a single distribution that uses https for repositories, are the packages validated?

How do I remove the big X button when I press the super key in gnome. Ideally, I would like to change which side it's on or make it disappear. I know I can change the side it appears on by moving by titlebar buttons to the left and it will appear on that side but I don't want to move my title bar buttons. Is there any way to achieve this. I'm on fedora btw.

All distros have flaws, memes or just suck. What do.
>>
>>57108739
Pick on that you like, fix flaws. Don't fall for the arch or gentoo memes if you're new to linux. Try out a couple distros and go with the one you like most, fix the things you don't like about it.
>>
>>57108739
Install gentoo.
