I bought a new rig to upgrade from my Celeron d 430. I bought a 380x to ride me over in 1080p until I had more shekels to blow. My question is this:
>What's the cheapest CPU that won't bottleneck a 380x?
I'm looking to make a secondary rig, and i sincerely doubt I would ever sell this GPU anyway.

Hey /g/,

I'm setting up a 3.1 system in my living room, mostly for movies and gaming (no consoles, Steam in-home streaming). Right now I'm looking at the new Polk Signature series. Two S50 towers and an S30 center would run me about $750, but I can't decide on a subwoofer. Would something like the SVS SB-2000 be too much/outclass the rest of my system? Would an SB-1000 handle a ~24x16 room? I like very precise bass, so I'm not sure I want a ported sub. I'd rather spend a little extra to get under 25Hz than buy a sub that only extends about as far as the towers, are there any cheaper subs that extend that low and would cover the space well?

a few days ago my nvidia driver started fucking up. Sometimes I get a message saying the display driver failed to start. In C, how do you store numbers into something like this?

I have this along with some other stuff in a struct...
int *digits;

and in my function, I allocate some space for the struct...
HugeInteger *n = NULL;

//MALLOC CALLS
n = malloc(sizeof(int)*2);
n->digits = malloc(sizeof(int)*(strlen(str)+1));
n->length = strlen(str);

and I have a loop converting some characters from a string into their corresponding integer forms
for (c = starter; str[c] != '\0'; c++) {
i = str[c] - '0';
n->digits[(strlen(str) - c)] = i;
}

but when I run it, all that goes into digits is a bunch of random characters. I've even tried just storing some numbers that I type out manually, and it still comes out as a random character.

I'm sure this is really basic, but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong

what are you actually trying to accomplish here? at a high level i mean.

like, for each number represented in a character string, you want its integer representation in a growing array of ints? what's the end goal here?

or do you want to convert a number that's in a string to an actual int that you can manipulate.

On my Nexus 5 when I used to play with custom roms and so I used the busybox top command in the terminal app. Dunno if you have a terminal and for it to work the faulty process has to run in the background too but there are apps that check for unusual cpu usage.

You can also see in the battery log if something is using too much cpu time and battery.

something along those lines. I'm kind of confused about the whole thing to be honest.

all i know right now is i need the numbers from the string in the array in the reverse order that they were originally typed out.

Memory usage by app, as far as I know, seems normal. Last 3 hours (barely used it) the top is Android OS at 411MB, then Google Play Services (don't think I've used any but I assume its background) at 103MB.

blocklists are placebo

>>57066218
yes
>>
>>57066128
sounds pretty horrible.

first off, the size you're malloc'ing for n may work, but it's being done incorrectly. just 'n = malloc(sizeof(n))' would be better - HugeInteger contains a pointer, and it's possible depending on your architecture for sizeof(int) to be different to sizeof(int*) - int could be 4 bytes while pointers are 8 bytes, for example.

your logic for reversing the order looks wrong to me - say you just had the string "123" - strlen("123") would return 3, and you want the 1 to go to digits[2], whereas your code would put the 1 in digits[3].

have you stepped through in a debugger to watch what's happening line-by-line?

I haven't, my class never mentioned anything about debuggers...

turns out I was using the wrong conversion characters for my test print statements, so I'm at least getting numbers now...

I changed it to strlen(str) - (c+1) for "12345" and what goes into the array is

digits[0]=12386496
digits[1]=12386496
digits[2]=3
digits[3]=2
digits[4]=1

so what's going on with those first two? Am I still using malloc wrong?

No, I mean "will the motherboard make any use of the DDR2-800 over the DDR2-667"?

Both being full buffered, ECC

So I guess I should say PC2-6400F as a replacement for PC2-5300F to increase speed. I imagine the motherboard is limited to 667 and the 800 will only run at 667 but I'm new to this.
>>
>>57066345
You have a few options.

A) Use backup and restore. You'll need an external drive large enough to contain the contents of your OS drive.

B) buy a drive cloner. I have a Sabrent cloner that was $35 on Amazon. As long as your SSD is at least the same size as your old drive this will work well.

C) backup all your data and do a clean install. Obviously you'll either need a cracker or an activation key for this option.
>>

You are looking for an imaging solution, it will take some work to get up and running. I recommend Macrium, it's good and it's free.

You may be better off just installing a fresh version of windows though, ESPECIALLY if you never imaged your machine when you bought it.
>>
>>57066333
i'm a little amazed they're having you even think about writing something in c without showing you how a debugger can let you go line-by-lne, as it's running, and what certain variables are set to in real time.

i just typed up my idea of how i'd do this, it seems to execute correctly for "12345" - www.tutorialspoint.com/compile_c_online.php?PID=0Bw_CjBb95KQMMGFMQjlYa1E4V1U

definitely needs more error checking, but i think it'll do the job. let me know if you have any questions.
>>
>>57066379
Yes it should work, it will just underclock it to the maximum speed the motherboard supports.
>>
Realtek audio chipset is buzzing with CPU activity. Games, notably GTAV, are unplayable because the buzzing is so loud over the game audio.

This is a common problem but I just can't figure out how to fix it on this machine. I just got it two days ago.

Windows 10 up to date, ASUS Sabertooth TUF Mark 1 mobo, i7-6700k, ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1080. Realtek ALC1150 audio chipset.

Realtek High Definition Audio Driver v 6.0.1.7541

I tried the default audio drivers that came with Windows. I tried the Realtek audio drivers and software that came on the mobo drivers CD, and I tried the drivers from the official Realtek website. No solution. All buzzing. I also tried moving the audio out jack around to see if it was the connection, and moved the audio cables away from power cables. Nothing helped.

Have been trying out photogrammetry, and some models require an immense amount of RAM, of which my laptop has few (6gb) and I can't afford to upgrade.
I have heard of Readyboost, however, and how much it helped in the old Vista days where most "vista-ready" rigs had less than the recommended amount of RAM, so I'm wondering if this would be able to help in my case?

Is it worth installing an AV program at all anymore?

I browse the web with umaxtrix and few other security addons that really fuck with JS etc, so only things I want to run, run. When I download an exe, zip etc I hit it with MSE. I have enabled UAC to ask for admin password when I try to do something that required admin privileges.

Every now and then I install malwarebytes to run a scan, hasn't picked up anything in 4 years. What advantage would a real time AV provide me at this stage? It would slow operations by 15% or so, something i haven't had to deal with in a long time. Pretty much what you said is all you got. The only other option depends on how your ISP assigns your IP. It's entirely possible that you could reset your modem (not your router) and get a new public IP address.

>>57068329
The easiest thing you can try is to just check what your boot order is. Even if your SSD isn't first in priority I don't know if it would cause problems but it's worth a try to have SSD first either way.

Second thing you can try is to enable "UEFI only" boot mode in the BIOS instead of "Legacy" or "both". Reminder UEFI boot only works with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed.

As I understand it, it's hard drive space you can set aside to have virtual RAM. Constantly gets overwritten with new data which is measured by "commit charge" if I'm getting my terminology right.

If you're lucky you've got a PSU with two or more 12V rails and one of them died.

> Can't afford to lose all my data.
Plug the harddrives in to another system and see if they are alive or not. It is that easy to know if they work and it's something else (PSU?).

If you do get the data off them then you should take this as a lesson: Regular backups seem like a waste of time until you actually need them.

My personal system: 3 USB sticks and 3 SD cards (3 home, 3 not home, switch regularly) for all my personal files (except personal video files) which always just contain the "current" snapshot and two external harddrives which contain 12 snapshots (every 2 months so 2 years).

If I was in your situation and both drives just died then I'd give zero fok's.

Whats the difference between an l2vpn and VPLS? I feel as though I should have learnt this by this time in my career but I don't really know the ins and outs..

My understanding is that a VPLS is good for situations where you may need to stretch your layer2 network. L2vpns are more rigid p2p techs?

Anyone electronics savvy? I'm trying to connect active pickups to a 1/4" stereo output jack on my guitar.
The thing is the stereo output jack has an extra lug to solder onto and what looks like a shunt connected to the tip (T) just like in this pic.

I'm trying to connect this as if the shunt didn't exist, because the wiring diagram I have doesn't include it, how should I go about it?

It does work with Issuu, not sure about 4shared. I suppose it would depend on your web browser.

Yesterday I posted about my T420 s battery life.

I have incredibly poor battery life, it lasts only 30-45 minutes running basic things like a text editor, terminals, and a web browser.

Specs are:

CPU -- Intel i5 2520m 3.2
Ram -- 8 GB
HDD -- 480 GB SDD with Debian 8.5 Jessie Stable, 1TB Windows 7 hard drive in disk bay
DE -- i3 desktop environment with xfce4

I installed powertop and tlp and have not seen any change in battery life.

Right now running acpi I get

Battery 0: Discharging, 63%, 04:12:01 remaining

But this will only last for 20-30 more minutes

Pic is the 10 power consumers from powertop

Not bat at all. And your battery should last a long time, as it draws like 5W

Is there anyway to do stuff like set custom directories for the files of a certain torrent in the qbittorrent webui?

I've set everything up on a headless server with qbittorrent-nox myself, but so far the lack of functions that I can perform with the webui is severely limiting me. It only lets me set a default directory and then scans it for the files. This isn't ideal for me as I have certain files spread across a few drives that I would like it to seed 24/7.

I don't really care to get into any complex solutions, so if you either have a suggestion on how I can extend the capabilities of the webui or a suggestion for another torrent client that has powerful webui I can make use of, I'm all ears.

Could anyone help me diagnose a solution for the electronic noise/buzz I'm getting from my onboard sound? I posted earlier here >>57066408

Here's a video of the issue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7VnfJ1BD_E

I've determined it's not audio drivers at fault. It's the worst when running CPU intensive games.

If I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, I hear the system audio crystal clear through my headphones, but the shrill noises persist through my speakers. If I plug my headphones into the front audio port on the back of the mobo, all the noise disappears entirely. This tells me it's probably an isolation issue because all of my equipment including the audio are plugged into the same surge protector on an ungrounded outlet. It's a three prong outlet it's just not grounded. Just moved into an old house, haven't updated electrical yet.

I have a mixer to test with just not another surge protector to isolate them from the rest of the equipment. Also at this room of the house, I only have this one outlet on this wall to test with. Others are unreachable.

So I just finished doing a mobo/RAM upgrade last night. When I put everything back together and plugged in my mouse/keyboard/monitor, everything worked fine. Windows 10 booted and ubuntu (14.04) both booted fine.

This morning when I plugged in the rest of my peripherals and other monitor, I started having issues. So the system POSTs and I can use BIOS just fine (all peripherals are functional). When I try to boot into Win10 the screen goes blank and I lose power to my mouse/keyboard. When I boot into ubuntu, it gives me the error that my screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly and I have to run in low-graphics mode. The peripherals work fine but I'm stuck just the terminal.

Where do I start?

I'm using Ubuntu and Gnome. I used to have the x/close button go to the farthest pixel in the corner. I prefer it that way because I can close a window without aiming. I just go as far as it will go and click.

Now I've updated to 16.04 and it changed my buttons to these circle ones that don't go all the way to the corner pixel. Does anyone know what theme or settings to use to get the old behavior back?

The last time I fixed this I made a note about it for future reference. It said "run gnome-tweak-tool and change the Window and GTK+ theme to Adwaita". My GTK+ theme is already set to Adwaita and I don't see an option for a window theme. Is there a Window theme setting that is separate from the GTK+ theme? How do I find that?
