What's a good 'esoteric' district to use on a laptop that I'm using as something I can use for programming on the go?

I know distro questions are lame, but is there any well known distros that do things differently while keeping the Linux kernel that anyone could recommend?
>>
>>57013417
nixos
>>
>>57013417

And how would those "esoteric" distributions positively affect you compared to the "normal" distributions?
You idiots spend more time switching between distributions for unwarranted reasons than you spend using your operating system. Then you post idiotic things like "I am bored with [insert OS here], recommend me something else".
>>
>>57013417
Try https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/
>>
>>57013473
Some people just want to expand their knowlege and skill. Hopping through common distros isn't useful but things like gentoo, void, guix, etc can actually teach you something.
>>
>>57013288
>free as in freedom
don't want to be nitpicking, but vanilla linux sadly has a bunch of binary blobs which make linux basically nonfree software
>>
>>57013569
Not if you deblob the kernel like Debian does or when you use GNU Linux-libre. At the end it's just configuration.
>>
>>57013519

The only thing they can teach you is using the distribution's package manager. A useless skill if you're not using said distribution.
>>
>>57013598
the point is the default state of it, ofc you can turn anything into free software, but at the moment you change it, it's a fork/a different program, not the original anymore

Hello. How do I open up the CLI on Fedora 22(VM)? I tried ctrl-alt-f2. I may have other stupid questions to if someone wants to help.
>>
>>57013473
Because I like seeing interesting ideas implemented. Once an operating system is on a computer, there's no reason to mess with it. But if you need to install something on a laptop that is extra computing fluff, why not have fun with it?

Personally, on my main machine, I have a minimal install of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Set it up in 2 hours, and then no more fuss for the foreseeable future.

What I mean to say is, you can be pragmatic while having fun.

you can mount virtual machine disk images as loop devices in loonix.

Methods vary for each container type (img, vhd, cow2 etc), google the exact method for your image.

Then you can use e2image to create a file system image of your system inside then write that to a real disk partition.

Basically opensuse and debian installers ask more questions (like how do you want your network, which packages you want, I think suse can set up your printer for you etc.).

Think of the difference between the installer of Windows XP and Windows 7/8/10

>>57015393
arch wiki must have a section to create an initrd that includes your ata/sata/scsi controller drivers and what is needed for UUID, I cannot really help you more.

In debian we have the dank update-initramfs program to create a fully functional and customizable initrd. Maybe arch has one too?

if I open a youtube video while a song on mpd is playing the video just loads and it tells me that i should "restart my device if playback doesn't start shortly"

same thing with mpv if I have a youtube video open or a song playing then I get

[ao/alsa] Playback open error: Device or resource busy

Something ate my memory, /fglt/!

I have an alert set up when my memory drops below 10% and today I got so many warnings. I checked the memory usage of Firefox, ~2GB, checked out other apps... not much. If I do free I get:

 free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15G 3.4G 915M 506M 11G 11G
Swap: 15G 48M 15G

hmm... could FF be the cause of this?

After quitting FF, memory looks like this:

free -mh
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15G 1.6G 2.5G 269M 11G 13G
Swap: 15G 47M 15G

Not much difference. Still 11G in buff/cache.

So, why does free report 915M? What's in buff/cache? How do I clean that shit out without a reboot?

I'm new to Linux and I know that in OSX I can just use "purge" and get all my RAM back. But I have no idea how that works in Linux and why all my RAM is being eaten up.

Linux likes to cache shit.

If you REALLY want to clear the RAM cache and buffers you can:

sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

This is NOT recommended and will actually slow the system.

Ubuntu isn't Arch, follow the Ubuntu wiki. You can even install normally and then convert to UEFI.

I want to set up a simple home use file server, if you can even call it that, to stream movies to my Chink box and phones and ps3 running showtime and what not, what distro should I use and what programs? Hopefully I can get everything set up and running in like 2 hours or less. I can use an old eeepc netbook or a x200 Chinkpad for it.
>>
>>57019036
Doesn't really matter, any distro will have what you need. Something like CentOS or Debian will be easier to maintain but that's it. Regarding the programs you'll need, depends on what want exactly, a simple file server requires nothing but SSH (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSH_File_Transfer_Protocol#SFTP_server).

There is nothing on the wiki, including the one you linked, besides suggesting you have both a boot and efi partition.
>Ubuntu isn't Arch
No, in fact, it seems to be better since it documents what Ubuntu itself doesn't, e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1331867#p1331867
Basically, it won't allow fat32 to be mounted as /boot, and might not even work if you manually do so due to symbolic linking.
>You can even install normally and then convert to UEFI
No, at least not easily to my capabilities because my UEFI won't boot GPT disks without EFI, even in legacy boot.

So to summarize: Ubuntu is a piece of shit and I hate it before even having used it.

Yes, and are in fact the retard in this situation if you lack the reading comprehension to understand this has nothing to do with Ubuntu UEFI support (Ubuntu installs GRUB and that's where "support" ends as far as I know), but /boot needing to be outside of an encrypted volume so GRUB can get at it. The fact remains that the Ubuntu installer restricts you from mounting /boot to FAT partitions, thus requiring a pointless /boot partition on top of your ESP. And it seems you can't even mount manually due to symbolic linking, i.e. Ubuntu won't be able update kernel if you do mount as such. I just learned about this now and that's why I'm posting, and I can't believe it.

If you don't want to encrypt /boot then why is "boot needing to be outside of an encrypted volume" a problem? You don't even need a /boot partition. All you need is a EFI partition and /. The only requirements (regardless of distro) are that the EFI partition can't be encrypted and it can't be /boot (because GRUB uses /boot) which makes the usual EFI partition /boot/efi.

Let me explain.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.

>Kernel bloated with literally all modules available,
Oh you again. Proves how boring your life is for actively springing on a specefic distro.

The kernel parameters can be set according to your autism spectrum before installation. Not that you would know because you never really installed Arch.

Employed people use a kernel that works.

>packages twice as huge as on other distros,

Wrong. I always give you a simple example: install screenfetch. It's just a bash script. However, debian decides to install scrot as a dependency. The repo of debian is bloated no matter what you do with your package manger, it's not going to change anything on debian repo servers.

>the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.

It's Arch vs Debian. Next up spaces vs tabs.

This is flt, not Arch irc
>>
>>57021469
GNOME-core is a preconfigured desktop, there are reasons why people install it, asswipe

Watch the fucking video first
>>
>>57021484
Arch is clear winner of that
Real challenge is Arch vs Gentoo.
I think Debian vs Fedora is more fair.
>>
>>57021452
it works on arch, you need to prefix it with python2 since arch fucks up with linking python to the correct versions
>>
>>57021500
By what metric is Arch the clear winner? Your preference?

Debibabbies, everyone

I'm rooting for the debian senpai, the arch senpai keeps writing blog posts
>>

How about a good pacakge repo and a package manager?
>>
>>57021503
I know, but users shouldn't need to fix stupid shit like that, a distro should work bug free.
>>
>>57021520
Isn't that subjective?
>>
>>57021506
I use Arch because AUR is comfy as fuck

Try setting up this on debian

Are you implying Linux will never move to python 3 in any year?
>>

lmao +1

Archfag out

>GNOME-core is a preconfigured desktop
No, dickhead. gnome is the DE, gnome-core is part of the DE; the core, not the complete DE, only the core. CORE.
>>
>>57021532
AUR is indeed nice. I use Debian because it has everything I need. Linux is great.

You don't know what you are talking about, newfag

gnome-core installs gnome plus some other shit like firefox and everything

python3 isn't a new version of python
python got upleveld from 1 to 2 without changing the name, but python3 is incompatible to python since many things changed drastically, that's why it has it's own link, so you have basically 2 different python languages, python (which include all versions below 3) and python3. archdevs are just too stupid to realize that and try to be "bleeding edge" on the wrong ends

You're right, let's move on.

New and friendly thread: >>57021725

I hope you're aware that many programs use python. Fucking around with the link breaks programs that start with "#!/usr/bin/env python", which expect the default python (like on any other distro).
>>
>>57021781
If you really do use that many non-repo python programs, then you can probably spare 30 seconds to make them work.
>>
>>57021793
What makes you think that these programs are not in the Arch repos? Do you really think Arch devs open every single package and fix the bang? No. It's pure luck when these programs work without errors.
>>
>>57021824
It should be the maintainer's responsibility to make sure they work. If they don't you should alert the maintainer.

Out of curiosity, which programs do you use that do not run correctly because of this?

>>57018507
if you're dropping caches to "save memory", you're doing it wrong
caches help speed things up with zero disadvantage
you're only hurting your performance

python -m http.server 8000

For some reason, my Xfce4 broke and it won't go past "Performing Autostart..." in the splash screen.

I have installed LXDE, it works fine, but I am more comfortable in Xfce since I've been using it for years.

I purged Xfce and re installed it two times, and it still brings back my old splash screen and gets stuck there. How can I remove the saved session manually? What should be removed in order for this to reset? I can't even get the desktop to work.
