I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It's actually hilarious. Basically the founder of Kubuntu Jonathan Riddell was asked to resign by Canonical because there were some disagreements between them, so he resigns and makes KDE Neon and now Kubuntu is dead as a result. Canonical started off so well but they have been making one mistake after the one for years now, it's actually amazing how much they keep fucking up.

Packages that just run when you launch them and end when you exit them won't slow anything down just by being installed.

If you install packages that start automatically when you boot the computer or when you log in, it can slow booting down a tad. If you install a lot packages that run constantly in the background and do a lot of heavy lifting, they can slow things down.

The beginner's guide is redundant and unnecessary. All it did was duplicate information found on other pages on the Wiki. All the information is still there, you just have to click the links in the appropriate sections, instead of all the sections being built-in into the page.
You are really stupid and should definitely consider killing yourself.

I don't know anything about network security. Are the default settings for ufw (UncomplicatedFirewall) fine?
>>
>>57025041

There have been threads on the Arch forums about people having the same problems. Look them up for solutions.

Le me guess, you're using Infinality or some other convoluted solution to a simple problem together with 100 packages from the AUR created by children which replaced packages from the official repository.
>>
>>57025079
Change monospace fonts from firefox
>>
>>57025118

Most likely, but I'm a layman myself.
Ufw's default policy is to block any incoming traffic, which is a nice "catch-all" rule. If you want to allow something to connect, just add a new rule. Also, depending on your use case, I recommend using firewalld instead. It's the superior choice for people with laptops that roam around a lot because it can assign firewall zones with specific settings for each network. Ufw is fine for a desktop.
>>
>>57025141

That's a shitty solution because he might run into the same problem with other programs using monospaced fonts that aren't Firefox. It's recommended to fix problems upstream; in this case the fontconfig settings.
>>

No, it wouldn't, depending on your settings. If you specify the font explicitly by name, it will show it without problems. If you however didn't and your terminal is also set to use the "monospace" alias, then it would show gibberish.
>>
>>57025152

Read this[0] to find out what it does and if you need it. Hint: systemd manages services (programs) which run automatically when you boot your computer and this is related to it.

The "sd 6:0..." parts are related to storage media. Do you have an USB flash drive plugged in? I'm getting those messages when I plug in mine. Try removing it during the boot process to see if they disappear.

The "drm:intel..." one is related to your GPU. Search the internet what it means. I wouldn't recommend disabling the DMESG output, but rather try to fix the hardware issue.

I'm training to be a sysadmin and my company is almost exclusively using windows-based stuff, which makes me very unhappy. Today I practiced setting up an active directory server with exchange and I was wondering:

Can anybody tell me what the equivalent of ad is on Unix-based systems? I don't mean "developedin2016.io" fancy new projects, but rather a "traditional" way of doing things. How did Unix/Linux admins set up and manage company networks in 2005 or before? And how today?

Yeah, but a swap file isn't as safe or easy to use for hibernation.

>>57028910
If you ever go over 8 GB of ram, then having a swap partition will keep your computer from becoming absolutely slow and fucked up, but that's unlikely to happen unless you're doing some really memory-intensive stuff.

The primary use for a swap partition these days is for hibernation. In order to preserve the entire state of currently running programs, it basically copies all of your RAM into the swap partition. The swap is then loaded back into RAM when you next boot up.

So if you want your computer to be capable of hibernation, then you need a swap partition that's a little bigger than how much RAM you have.

Wine can't do things on it's own, the Windows environment is only started when you run Wine. Having said that, WINE isn't a virtual machine or a container, it's a compatibility layer so WINE programs can do what your native Linux programs can do. If you want to isolate WINE programs you'll have to either make a user just for it or run WINE inside of a container but depending on what programs you use that's not really feasible because sometimes WINE has to have access the root file system.

Do you have firmware-linux-nonfree installed? It has the nonfree parts needed for the kernel to properly use nonfree drivers. On the plus side, your wifi should work. On the down side, you have no freedom with those drivers or those parts of the kernel; there's potentially malware or spyware involved, and you're ultimately beholden to the owner/maintainer of those drivers and blobs.

The only Linux distributions that are completely free are the ones in the FSF website. I don't think he makes any talks or articles about "technical things" that aren't free software-related because his life is devoted to freedom and spreading knowledge/awareness about it. He's a prolific programmer for making and contributing to so many GNU programs (as well as some of the things he made before GNU), but he hasn't done any serious programming for at least 8 years.

Source from this page: https://stallman.org/stallman-computing.html
>My favorite programming languages are Lisp and C. However, since around 1992 I have worked mainly on free software activism, which means I am too busy to do much programming. Around 2008 I stopped doing programming projects. As a result, I have not had time or occasion to learn newer languages such as Perl, Python, PHP or Ruby.

I think if you wanna know more about him beyond stance on freedom, look into his website for the shit that isn't about free software or politics. But it is far and few between.

Is FreeBSD really more stable than any Linux distro?

(I know its not technically Linux)
>>
>>57032994
Aight. I'll take that in account, I really want to try those motherfucking drivers
>>
>>57030881
Ugh, alright. I'm still on the fence about it but I feel like it's one of those things you gotta do in life

What's a good distro that has up-to-date packages and doesn't use systemd?
>>
>>57033156
Use google-chrome or firefox-bin libreoffice-bin.

That alone should cut 10 hours of compile time easy.
>>
>>57033194
You could just use Gentoo.
>>
>>57033235
I don't like the idea of compiling all of the packages to install them

I know unity is not the most customizable desktop out there, but is there any place with themes for it?
>>
>>57030729
LITERALLY every thread this year and the year before it, people have told you why it is shit, beyond it being a meme.
Just install arch
>>
>>57033122
>(I know its not technically Linux)
so what post that cuckware here?
>>
>>57033049
Why do you keep using a tripcode when it inevitably derails the thread and pisses people off constantly?

>All of your arguments aren't real problems.
Yeah, you and the posts you cause are a problem, including this very post.

>People here will call you a faggot and derail threads period, my tripcode doesn't do that.
Except that your tripcode constantly does that, and threads without you in them don't have this discussion (that we're having right now) in them. At least when the thread is derailed by trite Arch vs Debian shit and the like, it's related to GNU/Linux.
>>
>>57033240
You could install Arch with OpenRC, but I still think you should go with Gentoo.

Compiling packages only takes long for certain ones, like libreoffice and firefox and other default programs you'd install right after ejecting the livecd. After you've already installed Gentoo and whatever basic programs you want (optimally at the same time), then whatever packages you need to install will likely be quick installs.

>>57033240

HA! good one anon

Hi guys, I've been searching for an hour multiple issues but I couldn't find anything, so I'm asking here.

I just get a fresh samba install on Void but it can't start. It says pic related but I think I'm not understanding something.

Also, on a side note, I deleted some services from /run/runit and after rebooting they came up again. What I'm not understanding?
>>
>>57033344
>what am I not understanding
that void is new, and not ready for primetime so you shouldn't be using it if you don't know what you're doing.
>>
>>57033375
I kinda now. I mean, I think I have basic understanding of it, as I always messed up with it. But I don't know if I'm missing some basic shit.

Could be only because it is so cutting-edge?
>>
>>57023348
Red Hat Enterprise. Only shitty high schools with niggers use ubuntu.
>>
>>57033391
my guess would be, because of the way void handles installing packages, you probably have unmet dependencies you're unaware of
>>
>>57023348
the servers are ubuntu i think.

no year of the desktop linux tho, it's mostly a byod for that.
>>
>>57033418
Then should I check older versions?

Also, can someone try to help me with this?

Hi, i'm a beginner user, is linux mint a good distro for start?
>>
>>57033495
Also new, I read on babbies first linux about the mint security issue... does that also apply to mate?
How fast or optimized are beginner linux distros compared to something like win7?
>>
How do I into linux?
>>
>>57033495
Xubuntu. Go look at some screenshots of Mate, Gnome 3 , Unity, xfce, etc. Get an idea of what looks good. I prefer xfce, Debian or Xubuntu.
>>
>>57033599
install gentoo
>>
>>57033495
Mint is a horrible hack we call 'Frankendebian', it also has serious security problems. Beginners usually are best off with Ubuntu.
>>
>>57033678
>ubuntu
not sure if a distro made by microsoft friends who brought the first spyware into loonix is a better choice then broken mint insecurity

both are trash, we srsly need to find something better we can recommend to beginners
>>
>>57033713
>brought the first spyware into loonix
Stop giving them credit for things they don't deserve
>>
>>57033713
Good enough for newcomers. These people come straight outta 100% botnet... Most people also switch on their own after they feel save enough to a different distro.
>>
>>57033678
>>57033638
Cool, i tried the Ubuntu long time ago and i dont liked it.
Now i have an external 40GB HDD for learn some distro with mint on it.

I should change it with Debian or Ubuntu?
>>
>>57033759
Which distribution included spyware before Ubuntu Unity?
>>
>>57033823
Redstar OS

at least it's now opt-in

Go buy a pack of recordable DVD's and download "live iso images". Just pick out a few distros that look interesting, burn to dvd and reboot computer. You get to preview it without installing. Debian 8 Jessie is good. Xubuntu might be a little friendlier. Just google something like "xubuntu live cd with xfce". And it will get you what you need. Installation can be done if you like whatever version. I prefer this method instead of installing something I end up not liking.

I'm running Lubuntu 16.04 with a Radeon R9 390. How do I fix screen tearing? Finding something related to xorg.conf and xrandr but it gets too complicated from there. Are there any gui frontends for something like this? This seems like something that should be as simple as checking a box but the default open source drivers provide nothing.
>>
>>57023348
Gentoo. They dualboot with windows but that's used very rarely for windows only software like vhdl (i think).
>>
>>57033909
Oh, ty for this "hack" but i really can do this with an usb pen.
How to try some distro is not a problem, i want to know if there is a "recommended distro" for the all day use.

The fatc is: I have to use posgresqul with the terminal for university and i want to take the opportunity for pass on linux and learn to use it.
>>
>>57033965
Try compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --vsync opengl-swc
>>
>>57033638
>stuck with linux lite because winrar gives me error messages when i put debian/arch on a cd with win'8'
>get a no os error when i load the comp that linux is on when i try to boot up when usb
>try to load os-uninstaller from the linux tower and i need to put it on a cd but i go to user>share>apps and just see the shortcut to it

only way out now is find the path to the os-uninstaller and put it on usb then put usb in the win'8' tower then transfer from usb to cd and boot it on the linux tower.

fucking botnet! let me escape and enjoy freedom!

Is Kali special at all or can I just install Kali repo and tools on Fedora and have the same experience?
>>
>>57034526
Kali's special in the sense that it makes you look like a script kiddie
>>
>>57033965
is it LXDE or LXQT?

Use compton or compiz if LXDE, use kwin if LXQT imo.
>>
>>57033965
also, LDXE and LXQT really isn't made for high performance graphics if you didn't notice. if you use KDE, unity, or GNOME, you should get tear-free rendering out of the box. They're the "just werks" desktop environments. You can also try the wayland flavors of those DEs, or enlightmenment 17. Wayland doesn't have screen tearing.
