Can someone explain to me:
The LTE modem is part of the SoC, so why do some phones with the same SoC support more LTE bands than others? And if it's just a software lock, why can't it be altered?
>>
>>56597499
I think it has something to do with companies having to buy different licenses for different bands. Chink companies will usually cheap out on them, because they only need chink bands.

Companies pay licensing costs per band to Qualcomm. that's why most chinkphones don't work on U.S telecoms, since they don't officially sell their phones there they have no use to add the bands and cost.

My Galaxy S6 is dying and I'm eligible for an upgrade. I'm thinking of going to the S7 but I'm aware that some of them are dying a blaze of glory.

thanks /g/

OP3 vs Axon 7
One of the latter's biggest weaknesses seems to be the stock OS. How do the two compare when running CM?
>>

I fell for the Oneplus 3 meme and it already shat the bed on me and I had to send it in for an RMA, so I'm using my Oneplus One for now which is still running perfectly. If the Oneplus repair center really is as incompetent as people are saying, what phone should I get instead in the €400 or under price range?

The main reason for why I buy Oneplus phones is that they're one of few companies that don't fuck Yuropoors over with the dollar to euro conversion. I've been looking at the ZTE Axon 7 or Honor 8 but they're both more expensive than the Oneplus 3 here.

Should I just go for a Xiaomeme phone, since I prefer to run Cyanogenmod anyways? What Xiaomi phones have solid custom ROM support?

Is the ZTE Axon 7 worth getting now? How long should I wait?

- Amazing sound

- Mediocre fingerprint sensor
- Mediocre camera

- Almost stock android

- No clear info about future updates

- Mediocre 1080p LTPS screen
- Mediocre sound
- Good build quality
- Fast as fuck fingerprint sensor
- Good camera
- SoC that is is some cases faster than the 820
- iOS clone OS

Also, can I change the icons on the top (where clock, battery etc is)? Or apps icons?

So far my list of phones to consider are the HTC 10, OnePlus Three, the Huawei P9, and various Huawei models with the number 8 in them, at least from the root side of things(haven't checked ROM development for them yet to see if I can get a good UI). They ship them with ridiculously oversaturated colors, the sRGB mode on those screens looks great
But the OP3 screen is a PenTile design, it has actually quite less resolution than a true 1080p screen, see >>56601639

Not him, but I plan on getting this next week.

I recently bricked my first smartphone (some cheap thing) fiddling with Kingo and SuperSu. After doing that and noticing the recovery menu was useless garbage I'm a little skeptical but not turned off from the process.

I've noticed with the Blu R1 HD you enabled ADB, unlock, then flash TWRP and you're solid.
How bad you can possibly fuck up this part? In general, how do phones operate without a functional recovery (i.e. still boot Android to flash manually)?

Thanks. I'd rather not have a repeat of my last phone while still getting the most out of this or any new ones in the future.

It also requires a paid Amazon Prime sub (can't just pop the free trial) which irks me.

It may be a steal at $60 but how is the price point for the 2/16GB at $110?

Not really saving anything if I have to buy a prime membership I don't want.

And apparently the ad version's 6.6 OTA started fighting back (such as locking the bootloader), while the OEM isn't being regularly updated.

I've been having a really shitty day, /spg/.
I ordered a Nexus 5X on Saturday, and it was supposed to have been delivered by today. FedEx driver marked it as "delivered", yet no package was at my doorstep. Called FedEx, apparently I'm going to have to wait 2 days before I can get a response from them. Contacted Google, I'm going to have to wait 24-48 hours for a response from *them*. Meanwhile, I'm hoping there's no sensitive data preloaded on the phone in the event that it's been stolen. If it was stolen, the thief/thieves have the SIM card too, so I might need Google to somehow invalidate that (which I'm not sure is possible, hopefully it is. I heard they're able to invalidate the phone by the IEMI too). I don't know if it was stolen yet, or if the driver just plain fucked up. Waiting to hear back from either Google or FedEx.
Anyone have similar experiences?

R1 HD 2GB 16 GB Prime version with stock rom flashed to remove the ads($60). It's fast, it has insane battery life(this is my first time charging since monday night) and has an SD card slot.

Unfortunately there are no bells and whistles(not even ambient display) and it's design is kind of really ugly.

So my android phone journey has taken an interesting turn.

My first android phone was the Moto G 4G. A great, for it's time, budget android phone with microSD slot and 4G. What it lacked though was power and RAM. It had a habit of lagging. It's battery economy wasn't great.

Then my next phone I upgrade to is the Moto X Play. Great mid-range phone. Excellent battery life and though it doesn't say it supports quickcharge 2.0 it does work with 2.0 chargers.
Lovely phone but I got some dough saved up and I want the cutting edge.

The phone I get now is a weird change.
I decided to get a HTC 10 for £469 brand new from HTC.

Why that particular phone though?
Using Samsung tablets before all I have to say is that I loath Samsung's bloaty and ugly software. So S7 and S7 edge is a no go for me. Nor is the Note 7.(Plus I hear its pretty damn faulty)

So I look into other top end phones.
I thought maybe I'll get a moto Z force. Stick with the brand loyalty. Nope. US Verizon exclusive.
Maybe a LG V20. Nope. Turns out it probably will never go to the UK at all. LG G5 has that modular feature I probably wouldn't use anyway.

Chinese phones like the Huawai have an appeal, but I don't want to look into whether i can actually use my phone as a phone, nor do I want to deal with dodgy chinese software.

Maybe I go Google brand? No. Why? Because most google phones don't have a MicroSD slot.
The OnePlus3 doesn't have one either. (Plus I hear from many people that phone has issues)

So what's left? The HTC 10. What do I do the most with my phone? Listen to music on it. A lot of music daily.
HTC 10 supposedly has great music hardware and software ontop of all the flagship features.
The reviews bemoan its lack of waterproofing.
The only question I ask is what sort of madman uses their phone in the shower and at the bottom of a pool?
I don't give a shit about a useless feature like that. I'm putting my phone in a rugged, full case regardless. That's my insurance policy.
>>
Anybody else have the Nexus 6P issue of not being able to record audio with any app? Snapchat, voicemail, camera video, no matter that I use all that is recorded is loud static. Apparently this issue is very common but Google has not given any help on the issue.

Exactly. All these features are meant to be retard-proof features. But hey guess what? No matter how hard you guys try there are people out there that will break your phones and blame you for it. They shouldn't be allowed expensive phones in the first place that they clearly can't look after, but hey ho, they got money to burn so you have to research into this fools errand.
So many broken iPhones and Samsung phones I see in my daily work. The sort of things with smashed screens and bleeding pixels and screen flicker, that looks at you, begging for a mercy killing.

>>56603810
If he didn't put his phone in a solid sealed (or at least partially sealed) case then he's an idiot.
That is a day one thing for me. I won't even use a phone without having it in a case first.

I put my phone in a case and I've had that fall down a flight of stairs before at high speed. I've had it fall out of my bed several times where I've fallen asleep holding it.
Not even a scratch, except for the scratch on the screen protector from where I had it in a tight pocket with some keys.

I'd rather break the £15 case, then the £400+ phone. Some extra thickness is just fine.

A lot of people out there are dumb. Like, "holy shit. How do you even survive to live the next day" sort of dumb.

The only time I had a device go funny from condensation, was when I left my PSP 2000 on the windowsill during a very humid night.
Got like some sort of screen mold/warping the next day. (Though since it was a used PSP I feel like the screen would have died eventually anyway)
I actually took it apart and fixed it myself though with a cheap replacement screen. PSP is a wonderfully modular device.

But yeah. I would never leave anything on a damp surface or humid room near water anymore. Better to have the phone in bed with you than on the windowsill in that particular instance.

Since you come from an iPhone, MIUI will probably be familiar to you, so that's a plus if anything. However, you will probably want to flash either MIUI 8, or a Global ROM, or a Xiaomi.EU ROM, so get yourself informed on how to do that. It's really easy, to be honest.

I don't browse the web, play games but I do occasionally read ebooks.

I mostly use my phone to send text messages (using the default built-in app for that), send and receive calls, listen to music ( a lot).

The Redmi Note 3 pro seemed like a good deal for what I do with my phone, as I value battery life over almost everything else, and having extra room via SD card is always nice, and would make it easier to move music around.

Where should I shop for such a phone? Gearbest (?) seems to have a sale on the right now.

Thoughts?

It needs to:

This reasoning seems really backwards to me. Requiring a phone to have a case seems like admitting it has design flaws. Phone companies go on and on about how beautiful their shit is, how the back material feels like continuous orgasms but then none of them will cover for drop damage and they all expect people to use gaudy obnoxious cases on their phones. Profit margins on cases are hug because people feel like they NEED to have one. Well fuck that how about designing shit that doesn't break.

>>
>>56606086
Well, and this is what you should have done in the first place, you can look up what bands your carrier uses for your area. It's not always the same across the country, and they may rely on 1 band for bulk usage and have others for excess/random coverage. Compare the bands they use to the bands your phone supports. If it matches up but you don't see it, you might just be in a shit location/inside a metal house etc.

If you're not happy with the coverage return the phone or switch carriers.

Is MIUI really that bad? Apparently CM 14 runs off android 7.0 and works on Note 3Pro (More or less). I'm a sucker for customization but damn.

I have 4 days to figure out if the phone actually works with my Mobile service provider and if it actually going to be compatible with my needs.

MIUI is pretty ok. it's better for people who don't know much about tech/are used to apple. CM14 is beautiful and the RN3P is a good deal every time. i don't have one because it doesn't work well with US carriers but if it did i'd definitely have gotten one. it's not amazing; it's just a great value and it ticks all the right boxes, basically.

Not that guy, but between paying $200 for the same iPhone 4s I'm currently using or paying $200 for the Note 3 Pro, I'd say the latter is a hell of a lot better. For the price, it is simply unbeatable.

Just fuck off already, the RN3P is a solid investment, you buy them off aliexpress and pick one that had its box opened, they check for faulty hardware and they come with the global rom, i ordered mine about 3 months ago and its the best phone i ever had (S5, S7, HTC One, Nexus 5X, Alcatel Pixi 4, Moto G3)

i keep saying over and over, these phones you guys keep getting from china do NOT support american carriers and will NOT give you good calling quality. something like the rn3p works for say, canada on rogers; you have to check every time. if you want good phones that support each US carrier, look to the s6/s7, note 5, axon 7, moto x pure, nexus phones (overpriced but fi is nice) etc.and if you need specific carrier coverage, do a search on gsmarena to find a good phone for you (double check the bands though; they've gotten them wrong before). otherwise you'll end up SOL.
