Guys, is the Moto Z Play the best and most affordable phone out right now that will also give me the pure android experience?

I dont care if it's not running the latest 821, i'm not a power user. I prefer the extra battery as a result of the low consumption cpu.

>>
i'd trust samsung but if i'm being completely honest i lost my faith in them over a power button. the s7 edge i got had a sticky power button that would lock or not activate etc after 15 days of use. i looked it up; common problem. only solution is to have samsung replace it with a "refurbished" phone under warranty. samsung still hasn't fixed the problem; i looked it up today. that just screams shoddy QA to me and coupled with the consistently terrible batteries i'm inclined to say don't trust samsung's models beyond the s6.

$190 is already cutting close to top of my budget. Is it worth waiting a bit more to get the 5X? Trying to move up from an old 1st gen Moto E
>>
I am generally pretty poor these days, but I would like to try to get myself a nicer phone and I have 3 potentially-affordable devices in mind, so I'm looking for advice and suggestions. My budget is around/under $200, maybe $250, at most. And buying a used phone (from eBay, Amazon, Swappa, Craigslist) is fine by me, as cost is definitely a concern.

For the particulars: I am in the U.S., in Arizona; and I have T-Mobile service with Unlimited LTE Data.

The 3 phones I am considering are (in order of preference):

1.) Nexus 5X
2.) Moto G4 Plus
3.) Moto X Pure

I am currently using a Motorola Moto G4 (the cheaper Moto G4 that just came out about 2 months ago) and, for the most part, I like it; but it's a little too large for my liking, and the camera lags too often when taking multiple photos rapidly, which is a problem, because I takes lots of pictures. I have used a Nexus 5 for about the past 2 years and it's been my favorite smartphone so far. I also had a Nexus 5X briefly (just last month), but some sorry, thieving, piece of shit, cocksucking motherfucker stole it from my locker at work, after I'd had it for 9 days (after buying it from Swappa for $160 two weeks prior). I really liked the Nexus 5X overall, including the camera, functionality, and the size/feel in my hand.

As for the features important to me: camera; battery life; size/comfort in hand; smoothness of operation/functionality, not lagging or freezing up; signal-strength; call-quality; earpiece/speaker/headphone sound/audio volume.

Sorry for the long post. Helpful replies would be very much appreciated!

hey bud I just got a 5x today in fact, switching from a Galaxy S3 (sprint) to t-mobile. I don't know how helpful I will be since im used to a pretty old phone but I like it so far. Its definitely not small but I can do most things with one hand (except take screenshots, idk why volume is placed under power buttons now). I haven't used the camera much but it doesn't come with any bloatware. Brand new and runs pretty quick just browsing shit and doing basic apps. The speaker is not very loud. Display is nice and it really feels better than the $200 I paid (actually $6 a month for 24 months, can't beat that). I also got a supcase which seems comfy. here is my pape good luck

>>56574215
Thanks for replying, my friend. I appreciate the feedback and it's good to hear that you like your new Nexus 5X!

As I mentioned in my post, my 1st preference is a Nexus 5X, but there was a deal posted on SlickDeals the other day for a 64GB Moto G4 Plus for $200 (which seems to have been a great price/deal) and someone who owns several newer phones, including the 64GB G4 Plus (with 4GB of RAM), posted a reply and stated that the camera on it was comparable to the camera on the Nexus 5X and that the battery life on it is absolutely spectacular, and those two things are really important and enticing. They also mentioned that phone functioned very smoothly, had no lag, and was basically great overall. The only thing that bothers me a little is the size, is that I'm assuming the Moto G4 Plus is the same size as the Moto G4 (which I currently own and have sitting next to me) and it's a little too big for my liking, particularly, for one-handed use.

However, after reading the comments about the Moto G4 Plus having an excellent camera, being really fast and smooth, and having fantastic battery life, I am really tempted to try to get one, even over a Nexus 5X, particularly, if the deal for the 64GB model for $200 comes around again.

Has anyone on here owned the Moto G4 Plus? If so, thoughts on it overall? And if you happen to have also owned a Nexus 5X and/or a Moto X Pure, how do the phones compare to one another?

I have a revolutionary idea.

What if the new buying strategy for Android users is to get a new chinkphone each year?
All you need to do is determine how much money you're willing to spend on a phone and how many years you expect it to last.

benefits:
- always have great specs
- always have the latest major version of Android
- the battery, screen, and other hardware only needs to last a year
- getting robbed by Tyrone won't be as bad

cons:
- can't watch HD videos over your data network

What do you think?
>>
>>56574480
Moto will probably get better battery than the 5X or X Pure

The problem with the G4 is the underpowered processor. The ROM is fairly stock but somewhat optimized. 5X and XPure will outdo it because of their better processors.

5X probably has the best camera, same used in the 6P which is regarded well. Then the X Pure, then the G4.

If you have unlimited data, the limited storage on the 5X won't be an issue as much, but the G4 and X Pure have Sd card slots.

However, the X pure is probably too big for you if 5.5 is already large, and the G4+ is the same size but with a finger print reader.

The 5X is probably the best option for you, but beware its lackluster battery life and some build quality issues as per LG.

Alternatively, you could opt for something like a Honor 5X chinkphone, which gets full support on Tmobile and AT&T. 5.5" screen and 16GB storage, but decently cheap and not bad if you debloat it.
>>
>>56573900

>>
>>56575513
That's what I decided to do, haha.

About to order a k6000 pro, then next year(or later if the phone is still great), upgrade to whatever's hip and happening.
>>

>>
>>56575508
I have one. Love every feature of the phone, but it's not the sum of its parts.

Mediocre battery, software bugs, carrier branded so bloat and shitty updates, potential bootloop.

Overall, disappointing since I love the size and build, SD card slot, QI charge potential, LG's rom isn't terrible by itself, and there's nothing inherently wrong with the phone outside of its potential to fail.

Swapping it out for the HTC 10 ASAP.

However, beware of this fucking asshole >>56574308 idiot >>56574543 piece of shit >>56574658 who doesn't like people to try to be detailed and thorough with their posts/replies.

As for your suggestions, I definitely appreciate the feedback. And I am worried about the size of the G4 Plus and the X Pure, and I am really fond of Nexus devices, but the larger battery of the G4 Plus is really enticing, so I am a little conflicted now. As I mentioned, I actually had a Nexus 5X for a little over a week (before some piece of shit stole it) and I really liked it. And to be honest with you, while my experience with the 5X was limited, the battery life didn't seem to be that bad. I'm not a power user who plays any games on my phone or any power-hungry tasks, so my usage is probably relatively light and that may have helped with the battery life.

I'm curious, what phone(s) are you currently using? And have you actually owned any of these 3 phones? As for the Honor 5X, I've heard of that phone, but am not familiar with it at all. Is it actually comparable to the Nexus 5X or the Moto G4 Plus? Or even with the Moto G4?

did it heat up at all? i'm considering getting it because of all the carrier support and speed
>>
>>56575678
No, I haven't actually owned any of them, just ready SPG for the past 3 months.

Sure, the Nexus 5X battery won't be dismal, but I think it averages around 2.5-3.5 hours. Not bad, but the X Pure gets around the same on a 5.7 screen. The G4 is less power intensive and weaker, so it gets around 4-5? Light usage and no social media always helps.

I'm actually just switching over to a HTC 10 unlocked, because I hated my first phone which was carrier locked and bootloader locked too. Mediocre battery, mediocre software.

As for the Honor 5X, my girlfriend has one. It's about comparable to the Moto G4, with 2GB ram, a snapdragon 616 processor instead of 617, and a fingerprint scanner on the back like the Nexus. Although it's weaker than the Nexus 5X, it's certainly good if you want a phone for under 200. Can be unlocked and rooted too. The only real advantage to the G4 Plus is the finger print scanner, slightly better camera, and a version with more ram. Same hardware as the Moto G4, basically.

So... I may need to change my current ROM setup to continue playing Pokemon Go. Right now, I am using Cyanogenmod on a Oneplus One. Cyanogenmod has root built into the ROM, and Niantic has decided to be a bunch of cunts and block rooted phones in an Android Pay style. The current workaround is systemless root via something like Magisk. Problem: Cyanogenmod has root built in, and simply disabling it in the developer settings supposedly does not get around this. What seems to be the best option then, is to get either Cyanogen OS or Oxygen OS, and then flash Magisk with PHH Root.

Would this setup be best, or might there be a way to get regular old Cyanogenmod?

You have to delete su from bin/ and xbin/, then flash magisk as it would be flashed on a stock rom
Whenever you update CM you will need to do all of this again
Just stop playing that shitty game, they literally remove 3 features, add some minor feature and then completely fuck your phone for anything else every update

build.prop and other stuff, Niantic could just make it stop working on any custom rom or any rom that they don't authorize

I've been playing Pokemon since Pokemon Red in the GB, PGo is a terrible money grab with nothing redeemable, just stay with the 3DS games, they're awful too but not ridiculously jewish and at least they're somewhat polished

>PGo is a terrible money grab
It is, but I'm not spending any money on it. In fact, it kind of makes the game more fun if you HAVE to go knock down gyms just to save up coins to get a bag upgrade. Sure it's $2 if you buy it with coins, but you don't have the satisfaction of earning it. Spending money on it would feel like cheating... and I say this despite the fact that I'm using Fastpokemap to find exact locations of pokemon instead of wandering around and hoping to find something.

>just stay with the 3DS games, they're awful too but
I actually like the 3DS games. ORAS, I think, is a genuinely good improvement over the original Ruby and Sapphire. Not sure whether Sun/Moon are going to be that good, but I'll buy them regardless.

emulation is typically independent of software unless your RAM is gimped. if you got the note 3 pro prime thingy i assume it's 3gb 32gb and you're fine for emulating.

3G supports internet but it depends on the type of 3G as to how fast it will be. 3G supports texting and calling (4G doesn't fwiw, VoLTE is a hassle). if you use at&t you need LTE bands 2,4,5,17 for good connection. because at&t is gsm and not cdma (you probably got lucky here) your phone should natively support 3G because gsm is a universal standard.

i looked it up: this phone, if it's the one you got, supports both of at&t's 3G frequencies (1900 and 850mhz)

Both have massive drawbacks.
Axon (US version at least)
Reception issues
Gimped LTE and WIFI speeds
Various issues with software that has yet to be addressed, or simply poorly designed by choice (with no option to customize)
No WIFI calling, although it's "pending" apparently. Don't bet on it.
Terrible camera

BUT! If it breaks down your warranty will be honored, though it might take a week or two for the replacement

1+3
Overall hardware quality is better
Camera is okay, audio recording is really muffled
HOWEVER
It's still chinkshit so you have a higher chance of having a bum phone than a regular brand and if that happens you are literally fucked in the ass. Oneplus has some of the worst customer service in the mobile phone history.

Oh right, axon apparently has problems with people hearing you in calls. Seems to be a random defect, so it's another thing you have to worry about and should test immediately once you get the phone.

Honestly, the Axon 7 is pretty much a media consumption phablet that's maybe sometimes can be used for calls and as a camera if no one else is around to take pictures for you. But that's right up /g/'s alley. The US version can have the bootloader unlocked at the cost of your warranty. Not for the EU version though, because of conflicts with warranty laws.

My OP One died, and I'm trying to get a Nexus 6P but not available in my country. Got a budget of ~300$
>>
>>56576471
If you like/are indifferent about iOS, it's the best phone you can buy. It's a ridiculous performer.
>>
Op3 here, going on about 3 months. Everything's still fresh and crisp. Some light bugs here and there, but fast as shit. Camera sucks ass in low light though.
>>
>>56579121
Avoid mediakek like plaque.
>>
>>56579121
>>56579381
None of those are MediaTek, anon.
Go for the RN3P. The 3S is a solid 5 inch device but for some reason all the community support is in the Redmi 3\3 Pro which has a shitty, power hog, low performing Snapdragon SoC. The 650 in the RN3P is a killer processor.
>>
>>56579419
Oh I thought prime would be mtk my bad.
>>
>>56578565
>>56578630
interneting on edge is borderline unusable. american carriers don't have much hspa, so not having lte should be a deal-breaker. except you know for a fact that you will have decent hspa where you at.
>>
>>56572665
>Nokia N9

what the fuck, is that symbian???
>>
>>56575513
I'm honestly okay with buying the latest Redmi Note Pro every couple years. The Note 3 Pro and great and has awesome ROM support, has a Nougat build already. I'll probably upgrade in 2018.
>>
>>56577222
I've only heard good things about the OnePlus Three camera. While it's certainly no Galaxy S7 or iPhone 7, it's still really good.
>>
>>56579712
Nope, it's MeeGo, ex Maemo. A Linux-based operating system now owned by Jolla. It was pretty cool and powerful in the N900, but it's stuck in 2011. Jolla's Sailfish is pretty cool tho
>>
Is the Vernee Apollo Lite any good? On paper looks dope, but I'm worried that, being vernee a newborn chinese company, it will easily have little malfunction.
A friend of mine bought a wiko for 200€ hyped for its stats, but after like a month it turned out some basic functions, like phone calls, were garbage.
Has anyone tried it yet?
>>
Is the Moto g still the best phone in its price bracket? I need to replace my z3 compact but I really don't want to spend much money.
>>
>>56579419
yes, thats the only downside of the 3s right now, it was released in june so it's a relatively new device, little to no community development atm

it will improve.. i hope
>>
good phone if my budget is <200$
i currently have a chink phone which i only got for 60$ and its provided by our local network its a really good phone has quadcore 1 gb ram and removable battery msd card slot but the only thing is it only 2.5gb internal space which i can live with but the thing which really pinch me is it only has 1420mah battery
>>
I want a new phone but don't want to spend lots.Calls, photos and listening to music at work. Nothing special.

Nexus 5X a good choice?
>>
>>56579981
galaxy s4 and put cm on it, buy a bigger battery too..

>>

not? they are around 200 euros in germany I think.

/g/ has a hardon for xiaomi redmi note 3 pro

https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?spuId=8164001&SearchText=Xiaomi+Redmi+Note+3+Pro

the redmi 3 also looks nice. Both have cm support (rn3p official and the redmi 3 only unofficial). No idea where to buy them in the US tho. Ask in >>>g/csg/ for stuff like that.
>>
>>56580069
okey than xiaomi it is, my bro is really cm freak and he was telling me something about xiaomi,
the thing is should i just upgrade or should i upgrade when my old phone gets expired except battery stuff its going quite strong and i have quite gone used to the battery and my schedule
>>
>>56579419
Snapdragon 616 > 430
>>
>>56580092
up to you, they are relatively cheap and the note will get even cheaper when xiaomi releases the 4 (don't buy it, it comes with a mediakek soc and will be shit when it comes to roms)
>>

Is the Zenfone 2 as good as everyone says?

Also: Is there a phone out there below $200 with a screen smaller than 5 inches that's actually worth picking up?

I want phone under $200 that has 5 inch screen or slightly smaller. I will primarly use it for surfing the web. It has to be as much future-proof and durable as possible.
Is xiaomi redmi pro 3 a good choice? I am worried it's screen resolution might be too small... I know everyone is recommending redmi note 3 pro, but it is too big.

Quick question, i bought the iphone 7 and wanted to listen to some music, but i can't find the headphone jack, where is it located?
>>
>>56580532
there is a small hole on the left side of the charger, you need a 4mm drill to make the hole big enough for the jack. Apple said that there are a few faulty units where the costumers have to use a drill to get to their headphonejack.
>>
>>56580554
but i don't own a drill

Note 4 is a really nice phone and you can put in a zerolemon expanded battery. You probably choosed it bc of your price range but I would recommend to wait for the v20 if you want comparable performance. Note 4 nearly two years old and a budget choice nowadays.
Of course VR is a gimmick but how can someone else know if you like it or not?

Thanks man.
I have heard about the 10kmAh battery; that'd do me really well with the traveling I do regularly. The stylus is really important to me, but I don't want to buy a hand grenade.
I've seen the feature where you can view your videos in the cinema type thing and I'm sure that'd be awesome; especially since I'm downloading films lately.

Zte axon 7 has better audio than HTC as long as you can live with its shit camera . I have a Dslr so I don't really give a fuck about phone cameras and got it solely for its microsSD, 2k AMOLED and audio. Fingerprint reader is good but not as good as opo3

>>
>>56581188
My reaction exactly. It cuts some corners with no NFC, bad low light performance, and eMMC instead of UFS. But if you compare it with other phones in the 260$ range instead of comparing it with phones with an SD820 (going for 400 at least) it's a solid phone indeed.

Zuk Z2 is fine, but check out some videos of it on YT, it has some seriously ugly skin running atop of it. and no CM roms to change it. that one button and swipe up for recent apps is also kinda meh. but it's the cheapest SD820 phone on the market so if performance is all you need go for it.
