Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

This is probably an extremely stupid question, but do I need to run emerge as a superuser every time? Is that normal?
>>
>>56512943
It'll tell you when you're installing it, right off the bat.

Also, you should use the netinst that includes a bunch of non-free firmware. With any luck that means you won't even have to download anything extra.

Hear me out: I recently reinstalled arch, but now fonts are messed up in certain places.

It's mostly the 'u' and the 'g' are all weird and the top of text is cutt of. This only happens in in places like google spreadsheets or the github graph view.
My gtk-theme is adwaita, font is source sans pro. I installed infinality-bundle, but I've never had problems with that before.

I searched far and wide but came up with nothing; Anyone here who can point me in the right direction?

As it's the command-line interface to portage, yes, it's normal. It needs it's root access to install files on the system.

sure Steve Jobs maybe wasn't actually making technology but he was good at making it pretty and selling it. So good in fact that he managed to create a cult of personality for himself.
But all the decisions apple has been making recently is probably making Jobs spin in his grave.

There's no cultish leader, there's just some gay grandpa looking fuck. Idk how the cult is still standing

First off there's no "better". If you weren't a gullible idiot who believes everything he reads on here you'd know to check the man page or any other relevant documentation. Then you would look up those flags and see what they do. Then you would compare them and see what the difference is. Then you would form a reasonable conclusion and understand the differences and their effects. From that point on you'd be able to answer your own question.

I seriously doubt you removed freetype2. It most likely installed some shitty, patched and fucked up version of freetype.

>>56513200

Your window manager has nothing to do with fonts. It's not "kinda complicated" because of that, it doesn't affect it in any way. Stop being pretentious.

Look up what the important things are which define a distribution and then look at what those distributions do.
To be honest, I don't think you'll use either of those. At best you'll install it in a virtual machine or dual boot into it every fortnight to type "ls -a" in a terminal to feel like a hacker. For such use cases, any distribution will work equally well (assuming the coreutils are installed).

How is that an argument? I see it mentioned all the time.

>>
>>56513524
I exaggerate for comedic purposes. Let me take it a step back.

Many people use it only as a status symbol.

The forums are notorious for being extremely unhelpful, unwelcoming, and elitist.

Many of the people that start using it, do so for the wrong reasons. They get hooked by the "minimalist", "customizable", "debloated" memes, when they don't realize Arch is extremely not those things, even from the mouth of the developers

https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html

If you read and you like that ideology he's laying out for you, then by all means, use Arch.

I browse them daily and have never seen that. People use the forums to ask questions and get them solved. It's rare to find a post which fits your description on there (no one bothers with such time wasting things), at least on the support pages (I don't know about the off-topic subforums).
What you described can mainly be seen on here or other places on the internet (which aren't support channels for the distribution).
>>
>>56513764
Yeah, I just did an offline install with a live CD I had laying around, it came with Cinnamon.
I just had to make sure that everything works, so now I can look for something better to replace the distro and DE.

I want B's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file to mimic A's. Making a hardlink with ln works, but surely there's a cleaner way?
Possible solution: In the ssh_config, can I set the location of a specific user's authorized keys file?
>>

Well it may work but you woun't get security updates for major programs since they are blacklisted on Mint so the distro doesn't fall apart when updating.

Usually you find out which chip it uses and search it on the debian wiki to find out the name of the driver. Then you and contrib and nonfree to /etc/apt/sources.list like described in the wiki page for nonfree and update and then install the missing driver with your preferred package manager (aptitude or apt, it doesn't matter as long as you stick with one of them forever).
>>
>>56513632

There won't be any difference in you watching cartoons. You'll be watching them on the same website with the same, modern browser. Using a different distribution won't make any significant difference.
You people need to realize that and stop being stupid.

Try any lightweight distro like debian, buntu server/core(not sure if that is actually minimal or just pretending) or gentoo (not gentoo if you can't cross compile because your cpu sucks) with a lightweight standalone wm like dwm without a compositor and the lowest settings in mpv through youtube-dl.

In my opinion, it's:
1) just werks
2) appeal of Cinnamon (rarely use DEs but Cinnamon is clean, spartan-ish and halfway sane when it comes to the use of negative space by Lunix standards)
3) doesn't have a fucking retarded name like "Ubuntu"
>>
>>56514113

>>

apt-listbugs works wonders. As long as you install that and pay attention to it when upgrading stuff, you'll be fine. And pay attention when aptitude warns you of dependency conflicts. If they're upgrading lets say GNOME and they're halfway done when you want to upgrade, aptitude might prompt you to remove GNOME entirely. So just say "nope" and wait til later.

This was from about a year of using it now. I expected way more problems.

It's no harder to work with than Ubuntu without PPA's. I see it on lists next to "advanced" or "expert" next to Gentoo and Arch all the time.

I guess people are just retarded and can't read or follow instructions, which Debian requires a bit more than Ubuntu. Debian focuses more on choice, and has mostly default or unconfigured settings (compared to Ubuntu which tries to configure everything for you).

In summary, extra choices and extra setup makes it slightly "advanced" compared to Ubuntu. Definitely not as complicated as people make it out to be, and easier to install/maintain than Arch or Gentoo for sure.

What I really like about Debian is the way they handle proprietary software and kernel modules. It's very easy to keep your system completly free, or if you need a proprietary module or program, you can just install it.
Other distros come pretty bloated out of the box and don't allow to filter packages by free/nonfree.

Actually Debian has pretty lightweight repos.

For comparsion:

On Debian, when you install a package, you get the program. If you want to compile it, you get package-dev.

On Arch, when you install a package, you get the program inclusive all development header files (depening on the package, these can eat up to hundrets of MB).

Why do you keep embarrassing yourself by displaying your lack of knowledge?

You can make the "no-install-recommends" flag default.

>so almost like aptitude? does it offer an easy way for choosing options when resolving dependency issues?

No, it's just a front-end for all the apt-* programs.

apt-get install
can instead be
apt install

apt-cache search
can instead be
apt search

>Well you don't have to do that with other distros
you don't have to do it in debian either if you aren't a full on sperg or someone with a system so shitty and old that this actually makes a difference. or maybe if you are one of those people that bought a small ssd very early and never had any additional storage space.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/installation_guide

You don't have to do 90% of that shit on other distros too. That's not an argument. Different distros do things differently and different people like different things.

I don't see any problem with it, it's keeping things simple. I don't see any real reasons for splitting packages

Just made myself a nice little Live USB to try linux out for the first time (Ubuntu), not dived into it at all to be honest, downloaded chrome and came straight to 4chan... First impressions wow, the text is fucking nice man - For some reason all text looked disgusting on windows, secondly i've had 1 internal error so far... no clue what the problem is the 'ProblemType' is litterally just 'crash' And lastly i had one main question, how do i set my monitors up correctly so that moving right on my left monitor switches to the right monitor instead of Ubuntu assuming my set up is the other way around? (Also going from screen to screen doesnt seem as smooth as windows either?)
>>
how do i change the location where windows show up ? for example i want my terminal to be displayed in the middle of the screen when i open on it
using Debian

your wm should do this or use devilspy, wmctrl, or just use the -geometry flags
>>
>>56520025
Depends on the program and your WM but for terminals there's the geometry flag.

For example:
gnome-terminal --geometry=widthxheight+Xposition+Yposition

What are you trying to say?

Unix philosophy is a relic from the past and apt has better counterparts

My theory you are actually an Arch user to bring the SJW infection into the topic to make Debian look worse

After you emerge a font, it is available for use in all programs.

If you emerge a japanese font, for example, then you stop seeings little empty squares as soon as you refresh the page. It installs the fonts to /usr/share just like any other distro...
>>
>>56519483
Sounds cool, I'll check it out.

>>56519495
I'd have no idea if it's like Gentoo. FWIW these are font packes I'm installing through pacman, do you typically have to manually place fonts downloaded with a package manager in a specific folder? I'd imagine it would do that automatically.

>>56519510
Ok, as stated above these were installed with pacman so I should be cool?

I'm most definitely a noob. That's exactly why I chose Manjaro over Arch.

And you choose well. Not a Manjaro user myself btw, just take it slowly, you are doing fine.

Alright, I have one simple request - I need you all to resist your urge to meme at me just long enough to answer my question.

How do I get my ipod touch 5g to sync to my arch linux install? I just want to copy the photos off of it.

> inb4 stolen

No, it's mine, I have the passcodes, and I always tell it to trust the computer.

Could not connect to lockdownd, error code -2

That's the error I get from iFuse.
