Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Mighty scores there Bro. Since i was being cheap I just bought a used msata and two Evo 840 ssd for my new t420.
>>
>>56485917

how fast is that msata? I've thought about putting my operating system on one and just using this for storage.

Was prompted to buy this thing because I had a 120gb 850 EVO and a 320gb WD slave drive, and the slave died. I don't want any moving parts anymore

Buying a new laptop for school (compsci) for under 1000$ CAD

I was looking at either the Thinkpad 13 or the X260 or maybe the T460, both just under 1000$ thanks to the discount code (thx guys)

I'm leaning towards the Thinkpad 13 because it has 256gb SSD

Posted this last thread.

Should I sell my X220T and get an X250 later down the line? I love it to bits, but it's kinda on the heavy side, bulky, and the battery can't take me to the end of the day on it so I have to bring my cord on longer days. Maybe if I got a 6 cell OEM from Lenovo, but I am not too sure on t.

I flashed the latest release of GNU Libreboot onto my x200 today. This release offers better video performance and battery life than the Lenovo BIOS. It increases the vram from 32MB to 512MB, and allows for lower CPU states. The high resolution panel on my t500 is supported now too. The boot times are also a lot better than with the stock BIOS.
It is a shame that newer CPUs have Intel ME and other things baked in with required firmware, but I don't need more than a core 2 duo in a laptop. It runs very well with a SSD and 8GB of RAM.
>>
>>56487291
Get the 6-cell OEM and the 3-cell battery slice.

I started compiling a list for things to keep in mind when buying a used Thinkpad
Here is what I have so far:
-Bring a live ISO of another OS you trust so that you can determine whether something is a hardware or software issue
-Enter BIOS, make sure that it is not password locked, if there is a screen prompting for a password then it is password locked and you will not be able to change all settings

-In BIOS, make sure hardware matches the seller's description (core hardware is listed in the BIOS)

-In BIOS, make sure that computrace and anti theft is disabled

-In boot utilities run simple hardware diagnostics if available (newer models will allow you to check the health of memory and storage)
-Boot the device and check that inputs like buttons, touchpad, and keyboard are working properly (make sure they are not disabled in the BIOS before claiming something doesn't work)
-Check physical condition of the item and run a test on ports if possible
-Check if the COA is still on the laptop if planning on using it
-Plug the laptop to a power source or unplug if running off a wall socket to check functionality of battery and power input
-Inspect the screen for dead/stuck pixels or any other screen damage
-For the X220 and X230 series, inspect the screen for white spots (visible especially on light images being displayed)
This is caused by too much padding behind the display that is being pressed against it
-check remaining battery capacity (upower or tlp on GNU/Linux)
>>

>I have X61 tablet. Better pen accuracy than X2** but worse than Helix and other more recent tablets, but shit response time. No idea how it affects painting but handwriting is uncomfortable when you can only see what you've written 2-3 letters ago.
That's not the hardware though. Response is instant using, eg, XInput on Linux.

Yes
>1080
Not without trickery. You won't like it anyway.

I'm not saying the X240 is worse, just the X240 has its flaws.

X230:
>LVDS, no 1080+ screen
>thicker and heavier
>consumes more energy
>>

Thank you.
I need a pc for light web browsing, reading pdf, telgram and some yt videos. Obviously I never owned a thinkpad so I don't know what's best. I liked the desing of the x240, x230 seems bulky and x220 it's too old I think.
Don't care much about battery life.

Anyone can help me? I'm looking for a laptop for new laptop for use in college. My budget it's under 1000€ and I remembered you, the 4chan , /g/ people with their thinkpads :D and and I researched a bit in ebay for X1 Carbon. I was looking for a 14-15 small/lightweight laptop and find this one in ebay for 980€

Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3 Generation Modell 2015
Intel i7 5500U (Broadwell) 2,4 GHz Turbo 2,9 GHz FSB 1600 MHz
14,0" (35.6cm) Full HD (1920 x 1080) Matt
Intel HD 5500 (in the CPU)
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L
256 GB SSD

What do u think about that? It's a good deal? I can find something interesting with my budget or better buy a brand new asus/msi/acer/hp?
Thank you :D

I never got the craze behind thinkpads.

I mean, they underperform on any meter of judgement a laptop can score on.
They're as retared as "Gaming laptops". Why would you make a powerful machine that weighs a billion tons when you could be using a desktop PC to do the same thing for half the price?

And in case you need portability that much, why not choose literally anything else on the market, thus getting a more powerful machine, for less money, and that wasn't made with the standards the industry had 20 years ago?
>>
>>56493083

If you're looking for a college laptop, aka something you're going to constantly lug around and will be seen in public with, choose literally anything else.

Thinkpads are more for people who want to do work stuff on them or feel more tech-savvy with unwieldy portable hardware despite never leaving their houses.

In case you care about aesthetics, portability and practicality, just get a normal laptop off the "Our offers this week" rack.
You'll be spending less money and get an overall better machine much more suited to your needs.

Bait spotted but heck, I'll bite...

If you only focus on performance per coin then yes. Build quality is what you pay for. Way above average quality input devices, ruggedness, serviceability for example.
Heavy? Did you even bother to look up what they weigh compared to similar other brands/lines? Most of the machines you see discussed here are 4+ years old so look it up for comparable machines. Makes no sense to compare an X220 to a 2016 Macbook Air for example.

Hi guys!

Got this x230t today!
Has 16gigs of ram, a 180gb SSD, an intel i5 3320M, and I want to get into linux on that. Which distro do you recommend for a complete beginner, who wants to switch from long years of using windows to linux. I already lurked on some threads about this, and some people say Ubuntu and Mint are great for beginners, but I also saw people saying that they are shit, and recommended other distros like Debian Fedora, or RedHat/CentOs etc...
Keep in mind that im not afraid of working for it, and learning hard, but please dont hit me with the most difficult distros. (i heard arch is pretty difficult)
What i want to achieve/use the machine for:
-Regular internet browsing (including youtube, emails, stuff like that).
-Occasionally image editing (used photoshop on windows before, what options do i have on linux?).
-Learning how to use a linux, possibly as a server admin/system administartor.

Thank you for your time and help! Have a nice day! <3

Basically Arch but with a friendly GUI installer and if you have any issue the Arch wiki has you covered, also it's rolling release and just werks.

Xubuntu
>>
>>56496298
Trust me on this one, start with Ubuntu and after like 3 months try other stuff. It's been around forever and updated regularly. I tried arch and it gets tiring googling shit every 2 minutes to get things to work, download, update or uninstalled

750ti can be fully powered via pci express slot, so you don't have to use ATX PSU to provide power via 6pin connector
>>
>>56496449
But Expresscard doesn't provide anywhere near as much power as a proper PCI-E slot. You need a PSU no matter what card you use.

An adapter (I use the EXP GDC, i think anon here >>56497038 is using the pe4l or something like that), a GPU and a port to plug it in to your laptop which can be ExpressCard, mini pci-e or ngff (imo the ExpressCard one is the best, just plug and play).

Plug the card in the adapter, plug the adapter in the laptop, turn on laptop, install drivers, reboot, done.

pe4l v2.1b and a 12V 10A generic PSU.

Oh and a power supply to power up the adapter and/or the GPU if it has one or more 6-pins.
>>
>>56497184
Alright. I see from my research that you can also do more of the same with Thunderbolt, which if most laptops have soon you'd have actual eGPU sold as... standalone eGPUs. That could be interesting.

>>
>>56497606
Im guessing its one of the i7 models? Mine is just a dual core with hyper-threading which wouldnt be a terrible match for my GTX 750, but it would be fun just to try it with a 980 for the hell of it. Also, I suppose an i7 W520 would be good for this.

It depends, Dell Precisions and HP Elitebook workstations until recently, had better hardware in terms of graphics, displays and sometimes processors.
But the standard line of Latitudes/Elitebooks for the most part, are equal to or comparable to ThinkPad hardware.
The reason why these laptops are more expensive than their consumer counterparts because of a more robust build quality (I'm not talking about probooks, E/L Series TPs, E5xxx/Vostro), a longer warranty and usually quick repair.
A lot of the business laptops use quadro or firepro variants instead of GeForce/Radeon HD graphics, so ofc gaming won't be as great, but these workstation cards are better for CAD/VIdeo Editing/Photoshop.
Thats why for the most part, you can get a cheaper consumer machine than the business variant, because usually they'll use lower build quality materials.

Not a thinkpad expert here, I recently got my T430 after looking at T420, T430 and T440 in my country and decided to go with T430 for a few reasons
The T430 was anywhere from 150-200 less bucks than the T440, from what i heard the cpu of the t440 isn't noticeably faster than the t430, the integrated graphics is a bit better though. The trackpad of the t440 isn't just bad to use, but it gets in the way when you're typing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doEZMNXz1JY
I added a used samsung 850 evo (it only had 33 hours of use, 20 times powered on, works perfectly fine and saved 20 bucks) and another stick of ram to have 16GB in dual channel. The T430 is so fast for me it works better than my desktop and i'm very happy with it.

I installed a CF to IDE adapter in my t30 and I got a PATA SSD for my x40. The flash storage is a lot faster. I have Debian with MATE installed on both of them. The t30 has a serial port built in, so I put CHIRP on it for programming my radios.

i have a sick fantasy of having my laptop double as my home desktop, but hooking it up to a bunch of peripherals when i get home like a TV screen, comfier keyboard and mouse, etc. but would there be a way to beef up the computing power for stuff like photoshop without having just as well buying a desktop?
>>
>>56503403
If you can solder then just replace the cells
>>
>>56505132
Thinkpad Ultrabase dock makes that convenient. W520 has a socketed CPU, so you can have a quad core CPU if it doesnt come with one. eGPU if you want to game.

I have my librebooted x200 hooked up to a dock. I have my desktop for when I need more power and more screens. The other output of that screen is hooked up to the GPU that I pass to a Windows 7 VM on my desktop for playing a few windows only games, and for my friend to use when he comes over. I have a mechanical USB switch for the hub on the monitor with the keyboard and mouse that switches it between the VM and the thinkpad. I undock the x200 and take it to classes every day.

>>56505274
I was using Trisquel, but now I am using Debian with the nonfree repos disabled. Trisquel did work well for a while. I may try it again once version 8 comes out.

T420 should have a socketed CPU if you want a quad core, though I don't remember if it's directly compatible vs needing a mod. eGPU is compatible with any thinkpad with a expresscard slot.

Of course you have an iGPU, which has a bios too

Can reset/turn off CPU, fuck up battery or let CPU overheat
>hard drive firmware
Can literally alter your files to contain virii
>synaptics
Not sure what it can do, but the one in the wikileaks laptop was destroyed by the british NSA

you're joking right? Disconnected.

My only problem now is the internal microphone which I wish to disable but I can't be bothered opening her back up.

In the surveillance state we live in, only the X60, X200, T60, T400 and T500 represent freedom.

Make sure that you are using a configuration/script that lets you hold the middle button to scroll but also allows you to use it as middle click when you are not moving the cursor. That one change makes the trackpoint the best mobile pointing device. I even prefer it over a mouse depending on what I am doing, because you can keep your hands on home row.

Here is how to do it on GNU/Linux:

hmmm on the one hand it doesn't have a shitlet keyboard and has a very decent cpu socket.

On the other hand, it contains the 16:9 jew
>>
>>56507378
i already have that, the scrolling is awesome, and the center click thing is a godsend too, but i still dont see why i would use the trackpoint. it just feels inefficient

It is more efficient if you are doing a lot of typing. Do you have the acceleration set correctly? If the acceleration is wrong that can make them hard to use. Also, get a soft rim trackpoint cap.
