Analog optical switches? Misguided advertising. I can see musicians making a lot more use out of them than gamers.

Also, their durability has yet to be tested in practice.

someone is selling an IBM model M SSK (Not the industrial one) for 150 bucks including shipping. He says it works but it won't come with the cable. Should I go for it or not?
>>
>>56440292
Definitely, most SSK's go for a lot more than that. (I usually see in the region of 200-300) so you're getting a good deal. Cables are dirt cheap from ebay and unicomp.

Anyone else hate blues after using a linear switch for a long time? I used Gat Blacks for a year and switched back to my blue board a week ago. Blues are annoying as shit now, I never noticed how it feels like a double press on the way down until now.
>>
Having owned a board with cherries, a board with Matias clickys, and a board with Topres, I can say with confidence that Matias is the best switch. I haven't tried any authentic Alps or bucking springs yet so looking into getting some of those. I have an Alps Blue board coming in the mail. For the Buckling spring board, is my best option used Model M/F, or a knockoff?
>>
>>56442785
To add on that I also got a board with Matias Quiet Click switches, and it was nice, but the board would double register certain key presses so I had to return it.
>>
>>56442785
what's your budget?
>>
>>56442785
Why do you need all those keyboards?
>>
>>56442809
Less than a hundred as I've already spent enough as is, but I might make an exception for something like a Model F.

>>56442819
I only needed two, one for work and one for home, but the Cherry board was shit, and the Matias quiet click had an issue and I had to return it so I got Topres instead. At this point I'm more just wanting to collect older keyboards with nice switches.

reconsider browns

they aim for both tactility and lightness and fail miserably, feeling like reds with sand in them

either choose reds if you play games, or try blues or any other switch

if you're not afraid of getting something thats not cherry, try ajazz ak33 or pok3r
>>
>>56443142
agreed, I made the mistake to buy browns, I've tried clears after and liked them way more
I'll try zealios next
>>
>>56443142
>feeling like reds with sand in them
This meme needs to stop. Cherry Browns are just as bad as every other cherry switch. If you want a low quality switch, pick any type of cherry, not just brown. If you want a good switch, pick something sane like a Topre or Alps keyboard,.
>>
>>56443229
This.
>>
>>56443229

>>
>>56443142

Good call. I have a switch tester with 8 colors on them and red feels exactly like brown, except it's a shorter press. I think I'll go with reds.

It's true though. Cherry browns suck ass compared to any other tactile cherry switch. If you want linears, gaterons may be more desirable (though if you're autistic about absolutely consistent weighting and wobble, you may want to stick with cherry), but cherry browns are still the least tactile of all tactile cherry switches.
>>
>>56442638
To be fair, gat blacks are top tier imo

Eh, Cherry clears are quite nice. Haven't had the chance to try out greens on an actual board yet, but I feel like those might also be quite fun to type on.

If I had to choose one switch to type on for the rest of my life, I'd choose Topre over everything else. But luckily I'm in no such situation; It's nice to mix things up a bit with different switches instead of typing on the same thing all day every day.

What's wrong with them? Clearly I'm an uneducated pleb but willing to listen and learn.

I like numpad, makes it easy as I always use them for numerical input.

>>Backlight
As stated above. I don't have much space for a lamp that's not so bright that it fucks around with the monitor due to how tight the setup is.
>>
>>56446158
There is literally nothing wrong with full sized, especially if you actually work on your computers. The idea that it puts more strain on your shoulders is a complete fabrication. Smaller form factors that 80 are literally just for e-cred and aesthetics, and if you don't use the keys that are taken off a 60%, you probably use your mouse for all text cursor movement like a ludite.

Cherries and backlighting are legitimately awful though.

So what if it gives you shoulder pain? You are literally giving people shit for buying a type of keyboard that only gives special snowflakes like you issues. Most people have been typing of full size their entire life and haven't had any problems with it. The fact is that the only reason small profile keyboards became popular is aesthetics. No one buys hhkbs and 40% boards because they need the mouse to be even closer to their body than what an 80% or 60% provides, they buy them because the meme appeal, and because idiots can't type properly and want to mouse to be closer so they can switch to it faster as they need to move the cursor to make corrections.

The alps generally have a higher quality feel to them, and the most common Alps switch, the alps white, is more tactile than a cherry blue switch. They require more force to press, have a higher actuation, and have a deeper sound than blues do. They aren't being made anymore, but Matias makes some pretty good clone switches.

Alps white switches were the most popular mechanical keyboard switch back when they were being made. They were made back in the era when keyboards were sold with the computers for ludicrous amounts of money, and so they manufactures could spend more on making the switch nice. They stopped being popular after cheaper keyboards became popular and Alps decided to lower the quality of their switches to stay competitive. Their simplified switches flopped, and now we are stuck in a future where the only way of getting a legit alps board switch is second hand.

You know back then an IBM model F cost $9000 to buy since they used very high quality components, as such even though they are over 30 years old model Fs are nearly indestructible. Old Alps follow a similar build quality, just not as good and more lose so I wouldn't worry about old keyboards breaking down, but if you want a more modern keyboard check out these:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=113

for the keyboard, really just get something with tactile feedback. you don't have to bottom out every keypress, so this feedback helps prevent fatigue (mx blue/green, mx clear). that's unless you just want to mash a really light switch (mx reds) and not worry about it.

practice different grips for the mouse (claw, palm, mixed) and see which suits you more. buy a mouse (or trackball) tailored for that play style.

yes and the other one without rgb is recent too (just that the pic is inaccurate)

there are older ones which differ from the new ones in that they have holes in the keycaps for capslock etc indicators instead of leds between the keys, and the bottom row is more nonstandard on the older ones (new ones have 1.25u bottom row modifiers instead of mixed 1.5u and 1.0u), and the legends have a different color

like if you look at

pics 1, 2, 3 and 6 are of the older versions and pics 4, 5 and 7 are of the newer version, look at the bottom row keys and e.g. the caps lock key

You shouldn't care about lights. Learn to touch type already, not to mention that you shouldn't use a PC without enough light to see the keyboard anyway, since that just causes unnecessary eye strain.

Feel, sound and durability. ABS keycaps are bad because they start turning into that << after a couple of months.

It's even more important in this particular case, since the layout is not completely standard. 5.5u spacebar in particular is impossible to find replacement for.

What's wrong with liking cute things?

Is the Realforce 88UB a great non-full-size Topre? Trying to decide on one, but I'm still wary of the HHKB for some reason and the other models are either variable (most people say that's bad), 55g (too stiff for my tastes) or mildly too expensive to ship over here.

Have you considered the fc660c?

That's just shit ABS mate.
I have several ABS keyboards that have seen intensive usage and are nowhere near as polished.

I live in my own apartment and buy things I like.
These are also the first caps I ever bought, love the dsa profile but when there is a granite drop I will def pick one up

More expensive to get in the context of Poland, as far as I know.
>>
>Budget
£300
>Location (continent at least)
UK
>Preferred switch type
I've only tried Cherry MX Blues and Clears. I prefered the MX Clears but everyone says Cherry is shit so I'll go with anything using ALPS or Topre.
>Layout
UK ISO or ANSI.
>Form factor
60% is prefered but I don't mind going bigger or smaller if it's worth it.
>Backlight
I don't care but if the lights are likely to stop working within a few years I don't want it.
>Previous/current keyboards
I had a Pok3r with MX Clears for a bit. Right now I have a Majestouch 2 with MX Blues.

It would be great if the keyboard comes with good stock keycaps as well because I'd prefer to not have to swap them out and get sucked into the hobby of buying expensive keycaps frequently.

While not in the UK go for anyone of these keyboards that you can find in your area

Is the Matias Tactile Pro a good choice for white switches?

Sure if that's the one you want then go ahead. They also make TKL and 60% versions if you want one of those instead

If you're still here: that model is propably the only widely avaible keyboard with this style of numpad + arrows. I actually wanted to buy it recently but I read that Quickfire CM is manufactured by a worse factory than Quickfire Rapid, so the build quality is worse.

>friend working at computer shop was going to get me CM board with cherry's for cheaper price
>he got fired so I just bought used ALPS board over 3 times cheaper

Did I dodge a bullet?

Buckling spring would have been better, but models Fs are around the same price as CM boards
>>
>>56455218
I only ever saw model Ms with missing keys or broken plastic on sale here. This one is really clean for >20 years board and it works marvelous. I think this is the hardest and loudest I could go though, so I'm glad I got it for now and I'll look into model M's in the future

A quick search on ebay show a couple model Fs for 80-90 bucks, with model Ms going for 60-80
>>
>>56455573
Yeah I didn't thought of ebay, it's not really popular here and I'm kinda scared of shipping from other countries. Got this one for 25 though so I'm good
