How hard is it to find ALPS keycaps? I only saw one offer on massdrop

Yeah I just found these

Kinda sad there are only 2 easy to find offers when there are so many alps clones out there. Some classic-style blue caps like in model F SSK would be sick
>>
>>56455381
what keyboard will fit nicely on top of my thinkpad?
>>
>>56455598
Model M since you're going full meme anyway
>>
My ricer cousin wants me to machine him keys from aluminium and get them anodized, while he's ready to pay stupid amounts of money for it, I need to get some information on the actual keys themselves before I decide to waste my time with this.

Is there any place where I can get a detailed pictures of the keys with measurements.

I think he has brown switches, but aren't all the Cherry MX mounts the same anyway?
>>
>>56455708
You want to make keycaps right?

You could just take some keycaps and and measure them out.

Other than that, I think signature plastics has some datasheets available.

Thank you.
I have all the information I need now.

Doing some back of the envelope calculation each key would cost over 250 dollars to machine and that's just the machine cost, unless I machine them into a sheet and cut them out, even then it's stupidly expensive.

What a waste of time.

My Pok3r just arrived. Is there a way to rebind any key like capslock to TOGGLE? I wanna lock FN somehow.

Complicated blue alps are better than Topre switches.
>>

most alps switches are better then topre
>>
Why is it ok to recommend Logitech or Razers but not Corsair?
>>
>>56456215
it's mostly just that corsair has a non-standard bottom row so that replacing the keycaps is a mess
>>
>>56456215
there's nothing wrong with the keyboards, its just that for the same price you can get better boards. So you really are paying extra for a brand name.
Corsair used to have defective switches, but they have improved, though the none standard layout in their keyboards means you can replace the poor quality keycaps they use
>>
>>56456215

corsair has weird layout so replacing keycaps is a pain

razer is all around faulty trash that panders to 14 year old HARDCORE GAYMERS

logitech is pretty solid, but i recommend looking at other manufacturers like ducky, filco, CM, vortex etc for keyboards. buy your mouse from logitech instead, can't go wrong with their amazing mice
>>
What are your opinions on modern model M?
Ones that are remade, like Unicomp, do they feel/are the same? Are they worth it?
Also, does anybody know any other 90's mechanical keyboards like model M, i mean surely not everybody was using only that keyboard?

Here's the thing back in the old days of computing electronics were expensive. Computers cost tens of thousands of dollars and were massive, which meant that people could spend lots of money on computer parts. Now when IBM made their model F keyboard it retailed for around $10,000 in today's money and was designed to last 30 years since if you had to use a terminal it wasn't at home because no one could afford it only big companies. The mechanisms of the IBM model F is virtually indestructible since they are made from really high quality components no one in their right mind would use for keyboards. Now as computers got cheaper smaller companies began to buy them, and to capture the market IBM produced the model M keyboard. It used much lower quality components compared to the model F, but it is still better then modern keyboards. But computers got even cheaper so IBM made the model M2, which was even worse then the model M and I would never recommend you buy one.

Now IBM wasn't the only one making keyboards. Alps made their own switches and had very similar quality to IBM's buckling spring, but as computers got cheaper they simply couldn't lower the cost of production for such a well built and complicated switch and ended up selling their patents in the mid 90s.

Now if you want other keyboards switches here's some:

Space invaders (pic related)
Futaba
Mitsumi hybrid switch
Omron B3G (loudest switch ever made)
Nec Oval
>>
>>56456642
Thank you, good info
I wasn't really asking about switches, more like whole package thing, name and model of the keyboard you could just buy as whole, but thanks anyway.
I'm still kinda hoping to find someone who has one Model M (or something similar) and doesn't know/care about it, so i could get it cheap
There is still hope for this in Slovenia i guess, i still see old keyboards here and there (one friend has 3 90's keyboards, working, hes willing to give them to me for free but none are mechanical tho, one could take them just for looks tbqh)
>>
>>56456642
>when IBM made their model F keyboard it retailed for around $10,000 in today's money
source?
>>
>>56456788
Honestly most of those switches are used in crappy keyboards I would only buy as a novelty, with the exception of Mitsumi switches which aren't fully mechanical but are still clicky. If you want to buy old keyboards then stick with alps and buckling springs. Heck most old Dell keyboards have alps and sell on ebay for around $40

I'm currently checking out a vast array of key switched to get my first mechanical keyboard. I like the Gateron Red. It seems perfect for a Ctrl key. Using a tactile or any heavier key for a key I use that often (Emacs) and that is that peripheral seems like a bad idea. What do you think?

>>
ISO vs ANSI
>>
>>56458582
Average at best, wouldn't say fine. QFR is an okay keyboard for the price, but mine was first faulty (had to send back) then got one that worked and the rubbery texture wore out really fast, gone down to the plastic in a few months. Also the cheap shitty ABS keys won't last long.

A lot of chinese brands that are overall better and cheaper.

>>56458642
Depends on where you were raised but most here are ANSI. If you go for ISO then enjoy the hell of finding compatible keysets.
>>
>>56458537
That's a reasonable alternative, yeah. Or get a foot pedal, which would be funnier, but more impractical
>>
>>56458660
Actually, I'm asking because I'm not sure if shelling out extra to import the EliteKeyboards 45g Topre in ANSI over the KeyboardCompany 45g Topre in ISO is worth the effort.

55g sounds too heavy and almost everyone who isn't a 10-finger touch typist seems to hate variable weighting, so...
>>
>>56458792
Well if it's Topre anyway, you probably don't care about getting other keysets because that shit is nowhere. :' (
Up to you really. I'd still go for ANSI because there's things about ISO I just hate, like the tiny left shift.
>>
>>56458660

got rapid-i and it's perfectly fine so far, no faulty LEDs or anything, keys are fine, rubber is fine

Basically all these try hard switches that are trying to compete with cherry cut costs by not using gold in their switches. They're shit and they are not durable.

Tomoko is one that I would recommend if you want a cheap TKL. If you want a cheap full size with a white backlight then Monoprice with outemu switches
If you want 60% they are a bit more expensive because they're niche but Royal Kludge for 60 buck is okay

Tomoko is around $35-40, while monoprice is on sale for $45 on their website. The royal kludge is on mechanicalkeyboards.com

Just understand that with cheap keyboards you won't be getting high quality components so don't be too harsh on them

Hey /mkg/,

I am trying to compile my new planck firmware and getting nowhere fast.

So far I have tried:
>W10 bash
>MHV AVR Tools/MinGW
>Docker
>Cygwin

While following this guide:

They all give me numerous errors.

For example, while trying to use bash I can't get anything to run. It tells me to run git but git isn't installed, the "sudo util/install_dependencies.sh" command it tells me to run just gives me command not found errors.

Does anyone have an easier to follow guide?

>>
>>56463785
It's an opinion with strong evidence to back it up. Alps switches were produced at a much higher budget than any modern switch due to the high asking price for keyboards back when Blue Alps were being sold. Blue Alps were the predecessor to White Alps, and were made at a higher cost than White Alps ever were. The higher price allowed for better materials, sturdier build quality and better quality control. It's the reason why Model F keyboards are pretty much universally agreed on to be higher quality than Model M keyboards, old cherry switches were better than the modern shit they put out, and why no one is ever interested in buying simplified alps switches.
>>
>>56459244
Sorry for the late reply. I guess cherry because most mechanicals use them or something akin to them. From what I've seen anyway. Nowhere I can go try them myself out in the boonies.

Long as isn't like 20 dollars, I think I'll be okay.

Bro it's time to get up from the computer and take a break.

I ordered it, can return, and was wondering if anyone had some personal experience with this keyboard or similar ones from corsair that could help indicate the quality of the build and how it compare to other keyboards they have used. As people in this thread are likely more experienced in the world of mechanical keyboards than the reviewers of say, Amazon, I wanted to know their opinion on the product. While true, the ultimate decision of keeping it or not will be up to me, I was generally asking if I made any egregious errors with regards to purchasing price or if the model had a history of failure.
>>
>>56464611
there are plenty of decent keyboards to choose from at the $75-100 price point especially if you don't care about leds, you can get one with nicer keycaps etc, corsair has ABS keycaps when you could get stiffer and more durable PBT instead, and corsair has a non-standard bottom row so it's basically impossible to get replacement keycaps which fit well
>>
>>56464321
I actually find this one pretty comfortable but I wouldn't recommend it either way.

I haven't given myself long to adjust but I definitely find it annoying having to type words that exist entirely on one side of the keyboard using one hand, especially on the right. It takes me ages.

Its funny I was looking for an old alps keyboard on ebay and in one of the suggested links at the bottom had some old looking beat up keyboard for 40 bucks. I googled the model number on the back of it and found that it had blue alps. I didn't bother with it because it looked like it was marinated in a toilet even though the seller said it works.
Now that I know those switches are rare I feel a bit stupid now
>>
>>56467190 look I would have to agree with >>56467452 here. They may look tacky but if a person really likes the caps (I have Miami and love them) then they'll be more inclined to look after them better and therefore get better satisfaction.

It's always gonna be subjective but the main reason I chose miami caps was:
a) They were PBT caps
b) I wanted something that was a really light/bright colour scheme so I could read them in low light.
Also they do have a certain childish charm to them which I love :D.
>>
What more could you ever want /g/?
>>
>>56458074
They don't pay for the switches, they pay for the caps. Some models have pretty nice doubleshots.
>>56458130
Rubber domes are tactile, while MY are linear. You can't compare them.
>>56458523

>>
>>56465342

I recently switched from a G15 (rubber dome) that I have prettymuch always regretted buying because of its obnoxious design.
After trying all the cherry switches I couldnt really get myself to like any of them. All the non linear switches, I just couldnt get used to the 'dead space' above and below the tactile/click points.
I went and bought a 45g Realforce instead. It is the closest feel to a rubber dome, but far far smoother, and just feels all round more solid.

Obviously one of the main downsides to Topre switches at the moment are that there are no backlights available (although Topre RGB in the works, just google it).

Realforce vs Novatouch though, realforce comes with the better PBT keycaps that you wont have to switch out (finding replacements is a pain anyway), unless you buy the novatouch sliders and mod them in, but then your original pbt keycaps will be incompatable.
The Novatouch is apparently a lot louder, and you would want to get some of those Silencing rings made by Hypersphere, although by the time you have bought those and replaced the keycaps you are already probably spending more then on a Realforce.

If you can bear to lose the backlight, Topre switches are awesome desu. (or get that chinese backlit ripoff, or wait for the RF RGB)

They looks like standard stems, so yes.

As far as a non-standard R1 goes, check against the other keys and this chart. 1.25 on the bottom row is standard, but other sizes exist.

>>

>>
>>56469868
Apologies.

R1: Row 1, or the bottom row of the keyboard keys. Because keys on different rows have different shapes, they are assigned different row names. R1 is the bottom row, and the usually the row above, too. The profile is the sum of all of these rows, and the different ways they contour:

1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2 etc.: The width of the keys, relative to a "standard" square key. Alphanumeric keys and the like are 1, with other keys being either 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 etc. times as wide.

Usually, the easiest way to tell the size of a keycap is to eyeball it, but for a beginner it might be better to use a ruler or something and work out the ratio of 1:1, 1:1.25, 1:1.5 etc.

For anything else, the /r/mechanicalkeyboards wiki is pretty good. The deskthority wiki is good for more technical stuff. Or post here :)

http://pimpmykeyboard.com/about/

>Would OEM keycaps really look/feel out of place surrounded by DSA ones?
yes they would look (because they are) significantly taller
>>

Ah, thanks
I was browsing there and was initially thinking of going with the Katakana Otaku full set (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-otaku-keyset/) , it says out of stock though
You seem to know a little about the site, do you know when they usually restock things that are out of stock?
Since they custom make them i'm thinking it would be a while
>>
>>56476324
it seems they came in stock a couple weeks ago, so it would probably be a little bit, yeah.
the best thing you could do is sign up for an email notification when they come back in stock

could also request them to come back on massdrop, but i think that's even less likely

Nice one /g/, I've finally caved in and been gud goy'd after seeing all the colorful keycaps on these threads all week.

Went for a set of Tai Hao Sunshine keys for my CMstorm quickfire. These ABS caps have glazed over and gone shiny so let's hope these pbt ones hold up better.

Any one here have the orange and black PBT Tai-Haos? How thick are they and how's the texture? I've seen a few pictures and I can't decide if they're thin as paper or decently thick. Also, does the coating come off with isopropyl?

So it's a numpad as well as a tester.
Well isn't that nifty.

https://www.amazon.com/Noppoo-Mechanical-Keyboard-Switch-switch/dp/B0174I8IKY

you could get 20 of these to make the switches consistent and to test noppoo switches as well
>>
>>56481092
>https://www.amazon.com/Noppoo-Mechanical-Keyboard-Switch-switch/dp/B0174I8IKY
50 switches for 40 bucks. Thats a bad deal
>>
>>56481130
20 for $20 and you have basically a numpad with the tester
>>
>>56480549
okay I literally don't know what to google I am dumb now can you tell me?
>>
>>56481092
True, but I've never actually had a mech keyboard before.

I'm just looking for something to test which switch is right for me. If I can get more out of a tester besides just a bunch of a switches mounted to a thing, then hell, I'm up for it.

Especially if the keyboard I choose is tenkeyless, then I have a numpad in case I ever actually need one.

corsair keyboards are gaudy gaymer oriented commodity shit. the caps are cheap ABS, with only a small sliver of metal on the top case.

nonstandard bottom row makes sure you won't be getting rid of those crap keycaps, too.

throw in the stupid prices, and what more do you need?

Newfriend here, i have a tester with cherry mx browns blacks blues and reds, and i'm waiting for clears. Are cherry mx still the only switches you can hope to find in europe or is there something else? Is the ducky one still a good choice? I saw a video about some switches with infrared light. Is that bs?
>>
>>56481992
naw, you should be able to get matias new, or buckling spring, topre, and original alps from ebay.

maybe even some unusual stuff, but most is stupid expensive.

it's a meme, might be relevant for non-tactile switches, but otherwise they're pointless

If you are in Europe then definitely check out the deskthority marketplace. If you want something other then cherry switches you can find things like alps, topre, buckling spring, and their respective clones

Browns aren't the best tactile switch out there. If you want something better then go with clears or greys since they have a bigger tactile bump (pic related). The best tactile switch that's affordable would be a white Alps, which is even more tactile then any cherry switch out there. You can find them on ebay for around 40-50 bucks, but if you don't want used then matias makes alps clones which can also be found on mechanical keyboards.com
>>
>>56483077
Yea but browns I think are in the sweet spot.
>>
>>56483077
>Greys
Dont just suggest a switch youve heard from.
I have tried greys, besides them having 2 versions linear and tactile, they are heavy and not suggested for the average typist.
And rare compared to others btw
Browns are indeed no introduction to tactile. They suck. I too suggest something like clears they are nice.

>A weeb
Far from actually

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but would I be able to make a custom keyboard with only a laser cutter and a water jet? I have a monoprice rn and I'm looking to upgrade.
>>
>>56484135
you can make some parts but especially the keycaps would be hard/costly to do and you still need the key switches and the circuitry
>>
>>56484135
Are you talking about just making a custom case/plate or a whole custom keyboard. Well if its the whole keyboard you also need a controller, some cables, resistors, and some solder to hand wire it together. or you can get a PCB that has everything laid out for you

Well if you only have those tools at your disposal then its gonna look ugly. I suggest you get an acrylic plate and hollow it out using a milling machine then sandwich it between two metal plates kinda like pic related
