so i need to get my dad off windows. im sick and tired of fixing his shit. i put a bootable linux mint usb in his comp and it works pretty good. i'm backing his whole drive up now.

the only thing i know he needs on his comp is an easy to use remote desktop program so he can get into his shop comps, i had him set up with teamviewer, but chrome remote desktop seems even easier (botnet but whatever)

so is all this a good idea/bad idea?

Take a look at my situation, /g/ents.
I'm looking to buy a laptop, focusing on it having a small footprint, light and portable.
I've narrowed it down to 2 options (although I'm open to suggestions).

Option 1
Asus UX305:
Screen:1920x1080
Cpu: m3-6Y30
Ram:8gb
SSD:256GB
USD:$770

Option 2
Dell xps13:
Screen:1920x1080
CPU: Cire i5-6200u
Ram:8gb
SSD:256
USD:$1750

I know the ux305 looks like the much better purchase but I'm so in love with the xps13 design, i turn my phone on every 15 minutes to look at pictures of it.
Incase you're wondering, i live in jewland. Send help.

I recently got a subscription to a website of the erotic variety and, while I'm enjoying it, I'm having some trouble with their older content

Probably due to the encoding, videos from around 2011~2012 and back are simply huge. 4gbs for a simple 30 minute 720p scene while their newer scenes rarely exceed 2gb

Could I get some points or a tutorial for ffmpeg to reduce their size a bit? h264 would probably help my hard drive a lot
>>
>>56433025
I have an Asus laptop that matches your first one, costs just about as much, but has a slightly stronger CPU (not a huge deal) and 1TB HDD in addition to the OS's SDD (very huge deal). I recommend this one instead.

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/K501LX/

Sorry if it isn't sexy enough for you, but I bet that after your laptop accumulates crud and pubic hair over several months, you won't care about the look so much.
>>
>>56433044

Nigga, Ubuntu iso is only like 1.4GB.

Most Android roms are around the same size, even bigger in some cases.
>>
>>56433113
1. Get xmedia recode
2. Check the bitrate of the new stuff
3. Convert the old stuff, using the bitrate of the new stuff

If I had to guess, the old videos use a constant bitrate, which is much less efficient than variable bit rate (basically, use less data on the scenes that barely change)
>>
>>56433136
Only because their code is bloated shit. They don't pack in nearly as much hardware-level support as OS ISOs.

Is M4A lossy or lossless?
I have a library with a couple m4a files, some are flacs transcoded to Apple's meme format because I used to own an iPod Touch and some are downloaded off the internet already in m4a.
The issue I'm having is that I'm trying to get rid of lossless format meme, but Foobar tells me I'm trying to convert a lossy format to another when I try to convert those m4a files to MP3.
The issue is some of those "lossy" songs are over 50MB

Since youtube-dl evidently won't merge a single file into a new container, you'd have to select webm audio with

the iso is a filesystem image ("iso" is short for "iso9660", the filesystem CD-ROM uses, though it's also commonly used for UDF filesystems as well, which is what DVD's use)
"dragging the files over" would mean generating a new filesystem with those files, which will/may change things like;
- physical file placement on the disc
- filesystem metadata such as modification dates, labels, etc
- loss of data outside of the filesystem area, such as a bootsector
- loss of any filesystem hacks, such as what are used by various copy-protection systems (like deliberately corrupted sectors)

The thermal paste between the heatsink and the chip might be worn out/loose

The heatsink might be full of dust (de-dusting my 470 used to yield 10-15C cooler temperatures)

If you've OCd the card at all the voltage might be a little high

I guess shitty airflow in the case could also be a problem with a card that doesnt vent out the back but I highly doubt it.

>>
>>56437542
The only place where inline assembly is used is the Linux kernel and in programs that utilize special parts of the CPU (AES built in by default, RDRAND, special cases, etc.)

You only need to understand tid-bits of it to work effectively in C or C++
>How switches function as jump tables
>Bitwise operations

I do programming on the side, and I never had to deal with assembly directly. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to not use assembly unless you have a particular reason to because of cross-compatibility concerns.

nobody uses image filenames properly/uniformly
while "iso" is meant only for iso9660 filesystems, and "img" for arbitrary raw disk images, in practice they're both use for arbitrary raw disk/disc images

Tor is insanely slow due to how it works (traffic is relayed across the internet).
All information is decrypted when it comes out the exit node (unless HTTPS is used, which the Tor Browser forces by default), so as long as you are comfortable with someone seeing the information without knowing who it came from, then you are fine.

trying to turn it on the blue light comes on for a few seconds, then a loud snap sound comes and its turns off

it still charges fine

anyone have some ideas ? cant find shit on google

tried disassembling it and putting most of the wires cables off and back on and still the same problem, same sound, didnt touch the screen tho

also how do you put these little wires in, do you need like a hotglue or something ? they dont seem to snap back at all
>>
>>56438036
How would it do that ?

>also how do you put these little wires in, do you need like a hotglue or something ? they dont seem to snap back at all
Carefully.
Very, very carefully.
There's a thing that locks them into place, assuming you didn't break the connector while unplugging them.

Year ago i bought one RAM stick (1333MHz CL9) for some testing, but never had to use it until now.
The computer does not boot, nor POST when it's running at 1333, but when i manually set it to 1600MHz CL11 it works just fine.
I'm not really overclocking type so i'm afraid of getting errors. I can't underclock it using BCLK because of Ivy Bridge. Tried multiple MoBos and CPUs but i'm getting the same result.
Any suggestions?

What's on your computer now? You need an OS to do anything, including making an OS install disk. Unless you have some OS to work with or another device capable of making a CD/DVD or flashdrive there's no way to move forward. Borrow a laptop from a friend or something.

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong windows ISO. You can see if this windows 8 trick will still work to let you upgrade

Change sheets often and vaccuum your bed and chair, most of the dust is your own shed skin cells and this gets spread in the air when you move around in your bed and/or chair.

>>
>>56440555
You can get a hepa filter. Those are pretty damn effective, but you have to run them round the clock. You could also get an ozone emitter if you don't mind a little cancer. Otherwise your main bet would be installing your fans in the sucking position and sticking filters on them.

Extended warranty plans offered by retailers are pretty much never worth it. You can just as easily RMA something to the manufacturer if there is actually a problem.
>>
>>56440970
well I just RMA'd my Asrock mobo for the first time and it was a huge hassle with a lot of strings attached.

>if anything seems to be accidental and not a defect, i get charged $50 labor fee
>had to pay 12.50 to ship it
>return time was 1 - 2 weeks

For Newegg, in the terms and conditions, it looks as if they'll cover the shipping both ways (already basically $12 value) and accidental as well as manufacture defects, so if it gets damaged while being shipped i don't have to worry about it.

I've used Geek Squad protection before with no problems, I don't believe all warranties are scams. just curious if anyone has used it and there isn't any fine print i'm missing.
>>
>>56441053
No a scam, a poor economic decision. Any insurance has to make more than what it loses in repairs/reimbursements. So the only reason to get any kind of coverage is if the thing you're worried about would cost more than you could afford. Otherwise it's better to risk it. Universal rule.
>>
>>56441053
Main thing I'd check for is some kind of a deductable. I know my mom used to get the "insurance" with her phone and they'd try to charge her $100-200 to fix it if she actually made a claim, at which point she'd have pretty much been better off just getting a new phone.
>>
Can someone tell me some of the differences between dnf and apt that a pleb like me would a care about?
>>
>>56441155
well if an RMA costs 12.50 to ship with the possibility of a $50 service charge from manufacturer, and the newegg protection is 12 - 15, it's really not all that different right? i would assume they make most of their money on people who never actually use it and just get it to be safe.

>>56441163
no deductible, it's stated very clearly in the terms&condit
>>
>>56441411
There's no need to make it complex. It's really simple. Don't get any type of coverage for something you can afford if it breaks, unless you want special technical support/handling and you're willing to pay a premium for it.
