Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>At Lenovo, we make every effort to provide a great user experience for our customers. We know that millions of people rely on our devices every day, and it is our responsibility to deliver quality, reliability, innovation and security to each and every customer. In our effort to enhance our user experience, we pre-installed a piece of third-party software, Superfish (based in Palo Alto, CA), on some of our consumer notebooks. The goal was to improve the shopping experience using their visual discovery techniques.

So what's a good ThinkPad alternative?
>>
>>56426197
That was never installed on Thinkpads.

Elitebooks and Latitudes are the alternatives, but Dell and HP don't really have the best reputation for preloaded shitware either if you're going to drop Thinkpads for that reason.

>>56426197
This fucking meme again? Superfish never was, and never will be, present on the Thinkpad.

But if you're looking for an alternative, the HP Elitebook and Dell Latitude are two good lines. I personally prefer the older Elitebooks to the older Latitudes, but after HP started turning the Elitebook into another meme ultrabook, the Latitude sort of became the last viable alternatives.

I've been eyeing an E5770 to replace my aging W500, partially because I can get massive Dell discounts through my office. Right now I can get one with an i5-6440HQ, 1080p screen and an R7 M370 for about $1,300 syrupbux. Despite the chiclet keyboard, it seems to pretty much be one of the last real business laptops around, and even if you don't have insider discounts, it is still pretty inexpensive considering what you get. Just gonna be a hard pill to swallow since I only paid $500 for my computer back in 2011.
>>
>>56426207
>All the Elitebooks since 2014 have been cancerous ultrabook models with low-voltage processors, questionable cooling, limited serviceability, high prices, and a keyboard that is even worse in terms of layout than the Lenovo chiclets.

That goes for almost every laptop series. Yes, even Thinkpads. All of the points you pointed out apply to Thinkpads as well.
You are right, but it is not Elitebook-exclusive. Sadly.
Hell, even the brands 'Thinkpad' and 'Elitebook' are getting washed out these days. People found out those series were godlike-tier so Lenovo and HP started slapping the sticker on sub-par laptops (still better than average consumer lines though).
>>
Why are they called business laptops? You can use commerce and productivity tools on any computer.
>>
>>56426928

>When do you guys think the t420 will become too old to be used for everyday tasks?
Microelectronic engineer here.

The good news is the answer is never.

Development on CPUs pretty much stalled around the year 2005. The fastest CPU today is around 2 times faster in terms of single core performance than the CPUs made 10 years ago. Most of the time you will not notice the difference unless you use deliberate bloatware shit.

It's why Apple gets away with using the same fucking hardware for 5 years. It has forced OS developers to remove bloat rather than add it though -- a plus.

It's great news. T420 will remain "good enough" for anything you want to throw on it while on the road.
>>
How comfy are T420's for watching movies on your lap? I could buy one with a 1600x900 display for €229 right now.

I have a 13,3" samsung series 5 laptop now, but the screen is small, the keyboard is not good and it gets rather hot on my lap. Studying on a 13,3" isn't comfy either.

Is it worth buying the T420 for the comfort? I think they have the same processor, though the samsung is clocked 1GHz lower.
>>
>>56427176
I like it aside from the screen issue of the viewing angles being shit.

Also if you find 13.3" small, i doubt 14" will be a significant upgrade. Better go with the T520.
>>
I just bought a T400, am I fucked because of keyboard flex?

How can I correct that issue?
>>
>>56427295
buy a T60 keyboard if you are shit kicked about it
>>
>>56427295

Replacement keyboard.

I have a T400 as well and I don't have the keyboard flex issue, not sure if it's real, if it's dumbshits spreading fud, or if mine had its keyboard replaced before I bought it (it was a corporate unit so not likely).

To correct the issue (assuming it exists) you can get a replacement keyboard from another model, I forget which model though.

Congrats though, T400 is a nice machine. With 8GB of RAM and an SSD it's a solid daily driver. Did you get the IGP only model or the one with the HD3470? 1280x800 or 1440x900?
>>
>>56427286

I'd like the T520's screen size, sadly the weight and overall size are a dealbreaker for me. I have to carry my laptop around a lot.

When upgrading RAM from 4 to 8, is it alright to add any 4GB stick or is it better to buy an 8GB set with two identical sticks?
>>
>>56427343
I got one with the 1440x900. It's got the IGP only, but I don't mind, I will want to go full LibreBootard on that one anyway.

Going to stick in a good SSD and 8GB RAM as well as a T9600 6mb cache/2.8GHz CPU in. Will grab the RAM tomorrow.

Speaking of RAM, anyone had luck using faster than rated DDR3 memory? PC8500 is becoming harder to find.

>To correct the issue (assuming it exists) you can get a replacement keyboard from another model, I forget which model though.

Hmmm! Speaking of that, any advice on the keyboard replacements on ebay? Any good or are they chinky

>>56427475

>identical stick, never mismatch the RAM. Always use two sticks to make full use of dual channel memory
Is this a fact for all RAM, or can some random sticks function as dual channel? I brought a x220 with 8GB, but one stick is stock, while other is mismatched.
>>
>>56425723
I re thermal pasted my t430, but my cpu is still running hot under load (idle is about 5-10c lower)

>>
>>56427962
Most of the time mismatching RAM won't cause any issues, but I would avoid buying a mismatched stick to add to an existing one because RAM is cheap as shit and you should just save yourself a potential headache. If your system works fine as it is, don't worry about it.

Have T410 and new T420 will be arriving soon. T410 is running linux,

I'm almost always on my linux machine, and beyond needing it for work I'm much more familiar with it. At the same time, I haven't played games in a long time and am thinking of having one stick with windows to try some MMORPGs.

So I'm wondering if T410 with G1 i5 will be sufficient for some basic gaming. I'd really like to keep the T420 as my main machine.
>>
Is there such a thing as a brand new t420? I've seen a couple of brand new t430' on ebay for ridiculous prices but i have never seen a brand new t420. I'm sure there a t420 in a warehouse somewhere brand new and unopened which some idiot would sell for only a couple hundred, but i have never seen such a listing.

So, a month ago I got my T420 and I love it.
I live in a country where everyhing is overpriced and I finally saved up for a SSD and a RAM stick.
I got 2 questions, first one is which kind of RAM should I buy, it's my first notebook, si I'm kinda confused on which type of RAM should I get.

Second one it's about the SSD.
I'm planning to install W7 on the new SSD and partition the old hard drive; one partition for music, movies, shows and stuff like that, and the other one for a GNU/Linux distro (Don't really know which one). Question is; where should I install GRUB? Would that setup slow down the boot time of W7?
>>
>>56430345
>which kind of RAM should I buy
DDR3 1333MHz or DDR3L 1333MHz, if you get 1600 MHz works too but it'll downclock to 1333 MHz unless you flashed a custom bios so basically just pick the cheapest ddr3 or ddr3l.

>SSD
I'd say get an mSATA SSD so you can use two hard drives + the msata ssd simultaneously if you need that much storage in the future.

>where should I install GRUB? Would that setup slow down the boot time of W7?
ssd and aside from the prompt to choose your OS, i don't see why it should slow it down.
>>
>>56430462
Thank you!
For some reason mSATA SSDs are even more overpriced here. So I will go for a normal one.

>>
>>56430639
16GB of RAM is $60, 250GB SSD is $80, and I don't know how much a X230 is normally, but I would guess $200. But this one has a i7, which would raise the cost, but I wouldn't personally wouldn't pay for it.

So today the left click on the track pad of my T420 stopped working. It effected both the track pad left mouse button as well as the trackpoint left mouse button in such a way that unless I disable the track pad, the trackpoint LMB won't work. I used the track pad and trackpoint about 30-70, so I kinda want to be able to use both. If left enabled it would periodicaly effect the RMB too, but the functionality would come and go.

It's still under warranty, so I can get a replacement. Is the fix easy enough that I can just do it, or should I get a replacement.

so I think my T420 is giving up on me. The "e" in Lenovo popped off the lid. Recently the fan has been on more and more and CPU has been reporting idling/running at +15C more than normal. CPU fan has also developed a squeak. LCD panel has a horizontal line on it occasionally when browsing the web or watching a movie. The locking mechanism that keeps the lid down is officially busted, so the laptop never really closes all the way now.

I think it may be time to retire my work horse. Only question now is whether to buy a newer thinkpad, or my original plan was to buy a Dell Precision M4800. But now I'm looking around a bit.

Currently typing this up on my Chromebook 2 from Toshiba and honestly other than the restrictive OS, this thing is comfy AF. Getting a newer powerful laptop would simply be because I can.

Kek, that's the same store where i bought my t420 9 cell.

It's not genuine at all, none of the serial numbers and FRUs match with the software (mine has the original FRU on the label but has a 6-cell FRU from an e-series battery according to the Lenovo software), label has engrish and it gets stuck at 10% for a long ass time.

However in practice it lasts ~6 hours watching cartoons and ~11 hrs idle because i was curious too and tried to recalibrate it a couple of times which seems close to the real deal, so imo they re-celled a battery, printed a label according to the model and flashed with a generic firmware but work as they should.

Three months later with 57 discharge cycles and still delivering almost the same battery life.

>>56434136
VERY rare, but possible. I'm just curious if there is such a thing as a brand new T420 because I could not find one listing for a brand new T420 on ebay or craigslist, but i have seen a couple new t430'. Also hand sanitizer is slimy, placebo bullshit. As a professional germaphobe, folded paper towels soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol in a ziploc bag is a much better portable sanitation solution. And 91% isopropyl alcohol for electronics.

That mix of anger and disappointment when due to fuckknowswhat used Thinkpads are much more expensive in your country than the US.
Did the math (overlay) and it's actually _almost_ cheaper for me to buy a used TP in the US, get it shipped to Denmark, pay taxes and import duties and buy a replacement keyboard than it is to just buy it here... what a marvelous world we live in...
>>
>>56434451
The germaphobe here, i wash my hands 6-30 times a day. Its fucking horrible, and my skin sometimes starts to peel. But if my hands are dirty, i can't stop thinking about it and it just drives my insane. At least my frequent hand washing stops my palmar hyperhidrosis (excessively sweaty palms).

I live in a real dry climate, so my hands actually bled at between 8-12 (min) a day. I also detested lotion (feels gross to me) so this was only sustainable for a few years. Now days I just compulsively keep things tidy, but it makes me a good room mate so meh.

However, I was disgusted by the idea of what was on my hand more than anything. I had dogs, and public schooling with kids who actually smelled bad. Whenever I thought about what was touched, I just went and washed my hands right after.

>>
>>56434639
No. Or yes.
Depends on what you are looking for. The reasons for TPs are listed in the OP. Build quality, keyboard, trackpoint, sturdyness. If you don't really care about those points just get whatever consumer shit you find at ebay/craigslist.

Mixing RAM

I was gona upgrade by putting 2x 4 GB RAM in my t420, which currently has 2x 2GB (I think, it may or may not have a single 4 GB stick)

Im thinking however, of getting 1x 8GB and mixing that one with one of the existing sticks

My question is, as 2x4GB is roughly as expensive as a single 8GB, which is better? 2x 4GB or 1x 2GB + 1x 8GB?

Are there any drawbacks in mixing?

im using a mismatched 8gb and 4gb stick at the moment, IMO its totally fine. I need a good, durable PC to lug around for writing and moderate multitasking. I currently have a ~2013 Lenovo Y500 and it has been the worst device I've ever owned. I absolutely hate it. Horribly unreliable, and shitty even back when I spent $1000 on it.

I'm trying to find a durable laptop. Something that won't let me down, and is comfortable to use. I don't want all of the bullshit from cheaper laptops or from badly constructed trash like my Y500.

Should I get a thinkpad? I hate to buy another Lenovo after my experience, but most of the supposedly well-constructed laptops I'm seeing while looking around are not the type of laptop that looks like it will survive being knocked around in backpacks year-round.

TL;DR
I have no budget. I will spend anything if I perceive it as worth it. I want a computer that will survive rough traveling, and be comfortable to use for productivity. My worst technology experience EVER is the Lenovo Y500 I'm currently using. Is a Thinkpad for me?

Temporary Solution: a. Use throttlestop or CPUgeine to adjust the multiplier

Can someone help me figure out what my serious options are for business-line PCs? How do Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc. compare in different price ranges?

If the Thinkpad is actually the best deal I'm down to buy one. I'm just afraid after my Y500.

My priorities, in this order are:

Reliability - no hangups or shit like that. I'm a busy person.

Good keyboard(I type on MX Blues usually)

SOLID BUILD QUALITY. This is so important. Are Dell, Lenovo, and HP in the same general quality range here?
>>
Ive heard X230 is capable of GPS, how come? does it come with LTE card or something?

>>56443117
get an X230, replace drive with SSD and youre set.
>>
>>56443117
Older Thinkpads may fit your bill. Check out the X201, X220 and X230. The T and W series of the same generation may also interest you.
>>
>>56443172
WWAN card supports it.

What T-series should I be looking at for a $200-300 or so budget pre-tinkering?

Is 420 the best in this price range?
>>
>>56443417
If you can go up to $300, you should get a T520.
>>
>>56443445
If I can push my budget even further, is the i7 T520 still the best option at $350? When ebay-checking for T520s I noticed the i7 model isn't much more than the i5 model.
>>
>>56443492
Dualcore i7s aren't much better than i5s, but quadcores are. I'd say get an i5 model and upgrade it down the line if you feel the need.
>>
>>56443518
Hmm. Last question - I noticed the t530 has significantly better IO(2x usb 3.0). This isn't something I can really mess around with, right? If I want USB 3.0 I'll need a 530, or a newer model?
>>
>>56443574
You can add USB 3.0 via ExpressCard, but it doesn't run at native speed. Still substantially faster than 2.0.

W520s are also around the $350 range and they have two native USB 3.0 ports as well as a stronger GPU and four RAM slots on quadcore CPU models.
>>
wait so what's the point of getting a thinkpad vs some other newer better laptop

are they cheaper? more moddable? or what

How based is my 'Pad
>>
>>56443734
Cheaper for the specs, modularity, and build quality. A new $200 laptop will be practically designed to break in a couple months, whereas old Thinkpads are $2000 laptops that are now available for $200 and are renowned for being tanks even compared to other offerings in their original price range.

what should i buy? that t420?
there's a t430s or whatever on amazon, dunno the difference between them

y'all are thinkpad connoisseurs so i'll let you guys decide what i get, if i get one. a lappy would be nice to have.

Is there any practical reason to get a model above the W520? The W520 has a quad core that seems fast enough for any task I might need for the next few years, can support 32gb RAM(I'd run 16), has USB 3.0, and has a 7 hr battery life.

Do newer/more expensive models have better battery life? any serious QOL differences in terms of IO or performance? I can't justify spending any more than $400 on a W520+an SSD...but I might be wrong so I want to double check before eBaying a used W520.
>>
>>56445061
The only ThinkPads similar to the W520 worth a shit are the new P series.
>>
>>56443014
The thing is, there's a good screen resolution on the x240. I'm really anal about a good screen resolution, I'm not going to buy a fucking 1366x768 in a million years.
>>
>>56445157
Does this mean you agree that the W520(or perhaps W530?) are among the best thinkpads available, budget aside?

I really can't find a reason to buy anything else. If I'm downgrading I end up looking at significant hardware downgrades for $100-200 difference, and I can't find anything "better" that makes any sense at all.

Is the W520/W530 as much of a sweet spot as it seems like?
>>
>>56445168
In that case, check out the X260 (finally as fast as the X220), or the full HD screen mods for the X220/230.
>>
>>56445191
Provided you don't mind the shitty TN panel, I agree.
>>
>>56445216
>W520
>shitty TN panel
Stop falling for marketing buzzwords and thinking that IPS is inherently superior. The W520's panel is fucking great. Amazing colors, very bright, and even decent viewing angles considering it's TN. No ghosting, no backlight bleed, no white spots. Just glorious 95% sRGB coverage.
>>
>>56445061
newer models have better battery life, MUCH better integrated and dedicated graphics, and run cooler, and are a bit thinner.
>>56445216
the TN panel (at least on the w520/30) is absolutely gorgeous. Even better than the one on mac macbook pro.
>>
>>56445347
I own one. It's a shitty TN panel.
>>
>>56445194
>X260
>mods
Care to direct me toward that or some shit? because the fucking x660 is like a thousand bucks, no way I'm spending that much.
>>
>>56445372
Ok, if my budget is $1000(really prefer closer to $600-800 but I can stretch) what do you recommend for the best balance of performance, durability, and features? I want a fast and durable laptop with usb 3.0, a quadcore, and good battery life.
>>
>>56445434
a y50 or something
>>
>>56445434
I'd go with a t440/t450 with dgpu
if you need a quadcore (which you probably don't) go with a t540/550
if you get a *40 series make sure to swap the trackpad for one in the 50 series
the w series laptops have historically been a terrible deal used
>>
>>56439425
what
>>
>>56445493
>I'd go with a t440/t450 with dgpu
>if you need a quadcore (which you probably don't) go with a t540/550
None of these laptops exist in such configurations. They're all ultrameme shittops.
>>
whats the max i should spend on a used x220, i5?

also do all x220's come with the IPS screen?
>>
>>56445536
it's just easier to search for "thinkpad (model) dedicated graphics" than to search for t540p, so that's why I didn't say the p
>>56445564
250 max
no, most x220's don't. Unless they specifically say that it has the IPS screen it probably won't.
You could get lucky like my friend who got "dead" x220 that had an IPS screen.
also if you can get the model number you can look it up to see if it shipped with an IPS screen
>>
>>56445372
>the TN panel (at least on the w520/30) is absolutely gorgeous
We had a w530 and I kept telling my colleagues how it's an IPS display. That is until I made my research but I swear it looked like one.
>>
>>56445372
>the TN panel (at least on the w520/30) is absolutely gorgeous. Even better than the one on mac macbook pro.
that's something I will have to see to believe knowing Shitovo's standard for TN quality.
>>
What is the t420 keyboard like? I want something as close as possible to my brown switches
>>
>>56445392
if you can't spend $1000 on a new laptop maybe you shouldn't be on a tech enthusiast board.

and that goes for the rest of you too. i'm tired of seeing discussions end because people have no money. get a job.
>>
>>56445758
The whole point of this thread is to talk about great laptops for little money.
>>
convince me not to buy a t430s for $250
>>
>>56445677
you'd have to see it in person to really appreciate it.
plus I'm too lazy to get my w520 since it's in the basement.
>>56445690
nothing on a laptop will compete with brown switches unless you get that meme laptop that actually had brown switches.
>>56445800
well IDK about the t430s, but my t430 with dgpu runs hot as hell, and throttles after a while.
>>
>>56445817
>you'd have to see it in person to really appreciate it.
ofcourse, that's what I meant. I hang around the older X series too much so all I know is absolute shit TN or acceptable IPS
>>
>>56445789
Fuck me. I have cheap laptops too but I also have new ones.

I'm in the wrong place.
>>
>>56426518
That honestly looks like a really nice laptop
>>
Got a T420 for $250CND, but it didn't come with a battery. Obviously the price should have been lower, but how badly did I get swindled? Aside from that and some dust its flawless.

On a related note, how much is a new battery gonna run me?
>>
>>56445758
I have about 5k of disposable income right the fuck now but it doesn't mean I have to go full retard and buy a laptop I don't have the need for.
>>
>>56446482
since CND isnt worth anything, I'd say that's an ok deal. Expect 20-40 USD for a battery.
>>
>>56426265
SSD + Thinkpad is a match made in heaven.

My sisters uni laptop is a T430s + 1TB Mushkin evo.

220 CAD for the tricked out T430s (i7/thunderbolt/WWAN)
250 CAD for the 1TB MLC drive.

Did I do good?

It's running W10 edu with as much shit removed as I could.

>>56427176
I tried watching a movie on the T430s to see if it was as bad as people said. The contrast and gamut really is shit. The speakers are useable, but earbuds are an improvement. It does run toasty with it's tiny fan.

I think even the T500 I have has better colours DESU.
>>56427286
The T520 has a really nice TN screen option, definitely use able for movies. I lugged a W520 around for two semesters, it's doable, atleast the T520 powerbrick is lighter.

>>56445191
The W520 powerbrick is huge as fuck. You can spoof it with a bit of work but it might lead to issues.

The W520 also has a muxed GPU which limits the number of external displays and is a huge PITA.

The two extra ram slots aren't worth it for having to deal with the GPU BS.

Corebooted T520/T530/T430s is nice desu.
>>
>>56446583
where in canada did you get an i7 T430s for 220?
>>
Thoughts on the x1 carbon gen3? I'm strongly considering the purchase for heavy travel use

Is this a good grab for Netflix and shitposting or is it too old?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/252523503892?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
>>
>>56446648
Fine for shitposting, questionable for Netflix. Might be able to Frankenpad it with a widescreen T61 board which would be able to handle it better, but I'm not sure. I only know about the 4:3 T601F.
>>
>>56446648
It will work, but you should consider getting a 4-5 year old Dell shitbox from Laquisha on craigslist that was $300 in the first place. I see stuff like that for $30-40 all the time, and frankly the cheapest PC from a few years ago will probably be stronger than what you linked.

For $30 you're fine to buy that though. It will work very minimally for single-tasks.
>>
T420's can use cheapo aftermarket batteries easily so it's not too bad. I was looking for an ultrabay battery for a T430s and they're all 100$+. With some work you can flash the EC to remove the whitelist crap though.

>>56446648
sure, but the only real redeeming factor of the T60's is the 4:3 screens and the bombproofness. You only get 1/2 here.

T500's are almost a direct improvement + libreboot for ultra fast tts(time till shitpost)
>>
What's the opinion on Dell Precision? I'm thinking of getting something from the 15" 7000 series but it's pretty steep. I need the dedicated graphics card though.
>>
Is Crucial a meme?
I never heard of them until a week ago, and their SSDs have been shilled on here ever since.
