IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

----

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm interested in this Thinkpad. It is in mint condition, except that sticker spot visible on the photo. Can it be removed?

rubbing some hand sanitizer on the back for about 30 minutes, then just kinda using it for a week and the spot should be completely gone

I got my thinkpad in the mail about a week ago and opened up the bios to be greeted by a Computrace warning. Am I boned? The Thinkwiki doesn't even have a page on it.

Also, I've found an option for "Intel AT Module" but I can't find anything on the internet about it. Is it safe to just disable it?
>>
>>56398382
Call the Computrace people and get them to take it off
On top of that, send a complaint to eBay and PayPal stating that the seller sold you an item that is listed as stolen or missing, and demand a refund. You can possibly keep the machine AND get your money back

Been using my X220 as my main school machine. Gotta say /g/, y'all were spot on with this machine. It's been exactly what I wanted.

Currently running with a 256gb SSD and 8gb of ram. All told with a spare 9-cell came to $280. Couldn't imagine getting a comparable machine anywhere else for that price.

T430 vs E6430, which has the best battery life? Is there anything major that the thinkpad has that the latitude doesn't? Currently have a 8470p and battery life is complete shit, I'm lucky if I can get 2 hours out of it with a brand new battery. So I'm gonna sell it and get one of the aforementioned laptops.
>>
>>56398748
Disable the trackpad for a week and you'll never want to use anything else again. Failing that, try the other cap styles to see if you like them better than the default soft dome. Variety packs are cheap as hell on ebay.
>>
>>56398764

>>
>>56398748

Force yourself to use it more. 1 of 2 things is happening, either you're not used to the kind of pressure that's needed to use the clit mouse or you've got a turd one.

faggot has asked for the wisdom of the /tpg/ Monks concerning the following question:

I've got my heart set on a ThinkPad, and I'd definitely go for a cheap/second hand one if not for one of my requirements (I've been happily using the pic related piece of shit for a while now).

I want to do UE4 gaymedev stuff on it. I've skimmed through the buyers guide, but it only applies to sensible individuals that don't want to burn money. I want a gosh darn swell laptop that will eat that shit for breakfast, and that I can happily use for many years to come. Money isn't an object.

Anyone have experience running cutting-edge stuff on the latest models? This might really be the wrong place to ask, but you're better at this than I am.

No really special requirements apart from that, obviously if I can get away with a high-end T series, then I'd prefer that over some $4500 workstation replacement. Lower weight would be cool, but I'm pretty fucking jacked. Really, it should run cold(ish), come with 16GB of RAM if possible, 8 will do (fuck Visual Studio), and a decent CPU/GPU.
>>
>>56399853
Antergos then if you don't want the autismal installation.
>>
>>56399756
thinking about getting a X201 for normal use but can thinkpads run gayms like csgo\gmod over 60 fps?
>>
>>56399948
From my experience a t420 with intel hd3000 can't, your options would be a t420/t430 with the nvidia gpu.
>>
>>56399948
x201 can't even run those games at 30 fps
you'd need either a t420 with dedicated graphics, or a t430/x230 with the igpu to do that
>>
I found my X200 that I bought around a year back and now it won't charge its battery. Before I start spending dosh could it be the battery that needs replacing or the cable?
>>
Can I replace the t530 keyboard with a non chiclet one?
>>
>>56399873
Look at what other people use to do what you want to do. Then reread the guide and find out where that hardware can be found.

People have been doing DEV work (yes even for "cutting edge" shite) on shittier machines than you realize. If you let the machine get in the way of your work, you're never going to get anything done. Start doing the work on what you have, and then figure out where your shortcomings are.

The consumerist "i need to buy things to do my work cause reasons" needs to stop.
>>
Quick question.

I'm installing Linux Mint on my new T430 and I'm a complete beginner to Linux. Should I encrypt the installation and set up Logical Volume Management or is that overkill for me?

How long does it usually take for factory defects to show up on a new laptop?
Want to replace the screen but that will void the warranty so I need to make sure it doesn't have any defects.
>>
>>56401316
More power consumption, better than the hd3000 but still not that great and imo playing on the move for small periods of time is stupid. Furthermore if you want to game a stationary eGPU setup will actually play medium-heavy things and it's upgradeable according to what GPU you buy.

Then again it's my opinion and yours might not be the same.
>>
So, I was looking at buying a ThinkPad T400. Ideally, I want to libreboot the device, and use it for smaller games, like 7kaa, and for a business laptop.

I just checked some prices at amazon, as I don't want to make a PayPal for eBay. I might check craigslist.

Questions are, is 125 dollars a good price for one of these? It has 4gb of ram, which I hope to upgrade to 8. It has a 250gb hdd, which I may eventually upgrade. Is libreboot difficult? I read something about a BeagleBone Black for like 45 bucks. Is that part necessary to flash the rom? I will probably change the wifi to atheros. Is there anything I need, or should know about the laptop or librebooting? Is this a good deal? What is the battery like on the T400?

Thank you in advance.

Much, much better trackpoint, NVS 5400m 2GB option, second 9cell battery option, battery reset procedure via power manager. You can expect your T430 battery to last 500-600 cycles because of that. E6430 usually completely dies after 300 cycles.

compared to the t series. whats different about the lenovo r61?or the r series in general?

and could you please give me a considerable price for it?
i want to buy it from a good friend. i don't want to fool him.
>>
>>56407546
Starting from the R50, they're basically just thicker but lower-specced T series. Aside from the impossibly rare R50p, they don't have IPS screens or any particularly noteworthy features like that.
>>
>>56407546
Lower build quality.
No roll cage.
Brittle shitty quality plastic instead of high quality plastic.
Worse steel used (in hinges for example).
Clearly lower build quality.

Still much better than edge series, for example.

Just register on ebay. I got one for £60 ($80). Save yourself some money so you can stick an SSD in it.

My T-400 is one of the lower end ones (Core 2 Duo P8400) and it runs Battlefront 2 fine in PlayOnLinux, so it'll definitely do 7KAA.

The other shit I can't really tell you about.

I bought a X230 with IPS display on eBay for £270, then paid £25 for a 120GB SSD and £10 for a second 4GB stick of RAM.

I've got an Intel graphics T60 with a T7600, SXGA+ panel, 3GB RAM, T61p heatsink/fan. For an old-timer laptop with Linux it's still breddy gud. If it wasnt in storage right now i'd libreboot it.

I want that LED retrofit kit-making genius/faggot to do some T-series already. I wanna go LED; shit's dim, yo.

Absolutely. Also that 9-cell is probably half dead. You should be around 8 to 10 with that battery.
>>

Man I hate this thing. The screen is nice, but colors are shit and the 4gb of ram is killing me. The i5 is ok, but a dual core and the battery doesn't last long.

>>
>>56410772
What does a T460 offer over a used T430 that is worth the bump in price?
>>
I need your help making a choice between a T420 or a T430, guys. Bear in mind, in my country €300 is pretty much standard for a T420 and €360 for a T430. I'd like to have at least one USB3.0 port and if possible an HDMI port.

The T420 specs on the website say it has 3x USB2.0 and 1x USB3.0, and "HDMI(Displayport)", but the official specs from lenovo's website say it has 4x USB2.0 and no HDMI. Am I being rused or could it be some kind of later/upgraded version?
Also it has 8 GB ram, a 2nd gen i5, a 128GB SSD and comes with Windows 7 Pro, it costs €265,-

The T430 has 4GB ram, a 3rd gen i5, a standard 320GB HDD, and Windows 10, but it does have 3x USB3.0 and a HDMI port. It costs €277,77. Sadly, it also has a chiclet keyboard.

What's the best choice, /g/?

You can add usb 3.0 ports via the ExpressCard slot.

I'd pick the t420 for the keyboard though, unless it's possible to have the t420 keyboard 100% working on a t430. Last time i checked some keys won't work.

Cheaper materials but still sturdy, they are a bit thicker, I happen to like the R61 over T61 & T400.

None have IPS other than a few R50p, that one had a expensive optional QXGA display for those who didn't think the SXGA+ or QXGA display was not enough. That display is not available on any other thinkpad by factory.

Literally impossible. Installing Libreboot means you will be unable to utilize the HD3470 and will instead be stuck with the integrated Intel GPU, which is slower than molasses going uphill in January with crutches. You ARE getting the model with the 3470, aren't you?

With a Core 2 Duo the only way you're going to play anything more demanding than Quake 2 is by utilizing the discrete GPU. Coreboot is for fags, just get a large SSD and dualboot Windows (for gaymen) and Loonix (for whatever else) and you'll have a much better time and the only downside will be an extra five seconds of boot time compared to Libreboot. With the 3470 you're looking at everything up to early early Source Engine stuff at low settings.

Unless of course you have some sort of boner for the free and open sores movement and don't like the fact that the BIOS on your ching chong manchurian meme machine doesn't "respect your freedumbs" or whatever those fedoracore stallman worshipping autists are yelling these days.

If you stick with Windows 7 you'll have the option to hotswap between the IGP and HD3470 as well (driver support for this doesn't exist in 8/10), so you can save battery life when you're shitposting but get more power when you want to run a game.

Try to get a 1440x900 model, I have the 1280x800 model and it's ok but more screen real estate is never a bad thing.

With 8GB of RAM and an SSD the T400 turns into a pretty nice daily driver. It's a little heavier than most modern laptops but as a side benefit it won't snap in half when you look at it sideways like all of the 0.5mm thick shitty modern laptops do.

Some models have issues with keyboard flex, but replacement keyboards are cheap and piss easy to install.

I am saying why are you set on the T420? The T520 e.g. is typically cheaper in my country, and you can upgrade it with an excellent 1080 IPS panel (some came with it from factory).

I considered that but then rather got an X230, which only needs an IPS swap to be perfect for me - for less than 140 euros equivalent. The T520s I was considering were even cheaper.

So if prices are the same where you are, you can have a small and a large laptop instead of a medium sized one.

The difference in size and weight between the two is negligible that the only legitimate reason you have to willingly choose a T420 is that it's cheaper than the other models.

If you want mobility, T420s or X220/X220T. Nothing else.

Been eyeing up a T420 when I notice the T420s has a better resolution monitor. Seems like a slam dunk until reports about battery life. Notice the X220 which has the same resolution as the T420, but a two inch smaller display.

Why does the buyer's guide not mention the difference in resolution between the T420 and T420s, and is the battery life really that much worse?

nigga there is no difference, except

T420s all have 1600x900,
T420 can have either 1366x768 or 1600x900

Google it.
Anyway, sandybridge doesn't have the usb3.0 controller integrated, so lenovo put a dedicated controller chip connected to one of the three USB ports.

Conclusion: it has two usb2.0 ports and one usb3.0 port.

Yeah, looking at the price differences, eBay seems like a good thing to sign up for. Thank you, I figured it could, as I have a 1gb older then life laptop that could, at the cost of heating up.

>>56415858
Thank you. I didn't know coreboot was the new version. I might look into it.

>>56417656
Depends on the game. 7kaa is very old.

I like my freedoms, but I'm not autistic about them. The reason I wanted to libreboot in the first place is because I don't want the Intel management engine. I don't like what it can do, and its the reason why I considered the t400 in the first place, besides being a solid and cheap machine. In short, I was going to make it a business/document machine, with very light games.

That's also what I was thinking, a better screen.

That's also what I was going to do, and the t400 did seem to be stronger then the other models, at the price of less performance.

Thanks all for your answers. I might reconsider the t420 as a personal laptop and the t400 as business. Or I might just the the t420.

-

Laufwerkhalterung defekt.

I read the buyer's guide but I still can't really find any solid conclusion to what I should buy.

Here is what I'm looking for:
Screen not too big (preferably smaller than 15")

Lightweight, somewhat thin (please just not brick thick).

Nice IPS screen.

Good keyboard, preferably with a fingerprint scanner.

Good speakers (not too important).

Ohh, and being able to write on the screen would be a benefit as I was looking to buy a Microsoft Surface due to the fact that it's good for that shiz.

No more expensive than £450

Cheers, and recommendations?

Hello,

I've read the guide and I'm very interested in getting a Thinkpad or Dell Latitude.

I've been browsing Newegg and I've seen about half of the reviews for thinkpad refurbs don't well....come working.

Is there a link or place /g/ buys Thinkpads that are nearly guaranteed to always work?

I want to be able to use virtualbox on my Thinkpad to play around with virtual machines. I've read up that the Sandy bridge CPUs can handle a max of 16 gb RAM.

Can anyone confirm that their Thinkpad or Latitude can handle 16GB RAM?
>>
>>56422686
Ebay, if the listing says it works and it doesn't when it arrives, they're quick to fuck over the seller for you and get your money back. I haven't had that happen to me in over ten Thinkpad purchases though.

>I've read up that the Sandy bridge CPUs can handle a max of 16 gb RAM.
16 GB is the maximum with two RAM slots, but if you have four like on a quadcore W520, you can get up to 32.

More expensive, but came with a 1 year warranty and I think they did some light touch-ups like clean it and put stickers on worn out letters.

I'm checking eBay now, there are actually waaaaaaay better deals even if you flat out buy a thinkpad instead of bid.

Do you think it would be worth paying a bit more for an Ivy Bridge i7 for virtualization or just stick with Sandy Bridge i5?
>>
>>56422967

if budget is the main concern, buy the best T series Thinkpad you can afford with the weakest i5 you can find, and swap in a quad core i7 if you need to down the line.

I'd buy an ivy bridge model personally but I'd try an ivy i5 first, see if it's enough. if not, quad core i7, easy peasy
>>
>>56422967

>>
>>56422999
>>56423002

Ah, didn't know you could replace the CPU on these.

Well thanks to you guys, It's not a huge leap to play like $40 more from a Sandy i5 to an Ivy i7 due to eBay.
>>
>>56423040

>>
>>56423002
>>56423040

I got a t420 for $199!

Comes with a SSD and Win 10 Pro as well (inb4 botnet, I do IT support for a living so I should definitely learn to use Win 10)

Upgrading to 16GB RAM is around 40-60 so that will mean my total will be about $250 spent.
>>
>>56423388
Now get a quad core and a 1600x900 display if it doesn't have one.
>>
>>56423411

Can you recommend a certain quad core?
>>

yo /g/uys, been using an x220 for a few months now and you were right, it's the most comfy thing in existence.
i am using it right now.

however, every day i am fighting against the viewangles and i need an upgrade.
can someone send me a link to the correct display?
the lenovo page shows three in total and i am confused and don't want to throw 80€ out the window.
>>
>>56423520

So I'm seeing 80-90 on eBay for that processor.

Let's say I wanted to blow a little more money later on down the line for a processor, what would be the next step up you would recommend?
>>
x230 with IPS for $275. Is that a good deal? Figured that if I buy a x230 without IPS and get buy the IPS screen separately, it would be more expensive.
>>
>>56423647
2760qm, 2820qm, 2860qm

However keep in mind that the cpu cooler on the T420 is designed for a dual core. I got a 2720qm on my T420 that doesn't overheat, is stable and the throttle at high temps is minimal (like 200mhz) but i don't think I'll look for a cpu more powerful than that.

Maybe you would be able to put a more powerful cpu on there but there's no point if it will overheat and throttle to hell.
>>
>>56423767

Ah, I see.

Thank you for the information. Defintely a quad core i7 would be better than a dual core.

If I went the full route, total price would be $330 after RAM upgrade and CPU upgrade.

I just decided to compare to a newer i7...i'm blown away: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i7-2720QM/m34954vsm532

Also, the 2720 would allow up to 32 GB RAM....not that I should need or want that much XD
>>
>>56423944
Well the T420 only has 2 slots of 8GB anyway.

And yeah the 2720qm is very nice, it's a straight upgrade from the default processors that the t420 has imo.
>>
>>56424009

Right, but if the CPU has a max of 32 and you get 2 x 16 GB sticks.....it should work no?
>>
>>56424041
No. Sandy Bridge won't recognize 16GB modules. The only way to get 32GB is to have four 8GB modules, and the only Thinkpads with four RAM slots are quadcore W series models
>>
>>56424041
It's designed for laptops like the W520 with 4 x 8GB slots.
>>
>>56424061
>>56424074

Got it.....not that I need 32 GB anyways XD.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Is there any advice for correctly modifying the padding behind the screen?

I've got the chinkpad X230 with the infamous white spots on the display from the incorrect padding pushing the screen from the back. I'll drop in a new IPS panel, but don't want the same thing to happen again.
>>
>>56423944
>total price would be $330 after RAM upgrade and CPU upgrade.
Now get an msata ssd and 2x 2tb hdds for three drives of porn storage :^)

The upgrades never end with these things.

So /tpg/ I'm debating whether or not I should sell my 600X and X300. They're both iconic models, but honestly I have not booted either one in months and I don't have a lot of space in my apartment.

I've got a good idea of what to sell the X300 for, but no clue what I should list the 600X for. Any ideas?

>>56422967
You just have to be patient with the bidding. Obviously if you need your Thinkpad RIGHT NOW, then it will be a lot harder to get a good deal. If you wait around and bid on the right listings, you can do quite well.

>Try to get a 1440x900 model, I have the 1280x800 model and it's ok but more screen real estate is never a bad thing

The 1280x800 model that runs at 670 nits is completely worth the loss of the 100 vertical pixels. It's twice the brightness of the 1600x900 panel on the T420 and somehow the colours are more accurate, too. There are so many times where I've found myself in direct sunlight loving that screen. Tough as all fuck to find one, though, since it was basically only private professionals buying them.

Agree that the T400 is pretty decent as a daily. It sometimes runs into hiccups on cancerous over-designed websites, but for the most part it is pretty hard to fault. If you're on Linux, then you can even be comfortable with only 4GB of RAM.
>>
>>56423647
i've read somewhere that you can put an ivy bridge processor inside the t420 if you flash coreboot onto it (with a hardware flasher). It seems kinda hard but i once flashed libreboot on my T400 and its not that hard.

What is with all the people extolling the virtues of the Elitebook over the Thinkpad?

All the Elitebooks since 2014 have been cancerous ultrabook models with low-voltage processors, questionable cooling, limited serviceability, high prices, and a keyboard that is even worse in terms of layout than the Lenovo chiclets. Pre-2014 models are usually bested by their Thinkpad counterparts. So the only alternative to the Thinkpad, really, is the Dell Latitude, but nobody ever talks about them. What's the deal? Are people so put off by the Inspiron that they don't want to be associated with the Dell logo at all?
