IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

----

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is $80 for a T420 a good deal? I can get one from my office since they're dumping all the old Thinkpads and upgrading to Dell Latitudes of some kind. Surprisingly it has a 1600x900 screen, but everything else is bog standard (2 gigs of RAM, Core i3 processor, 160 GB hard disk drive).

Can't be upgraded to IPS without flickering issues. I've heard they finally fixed it, but I don't think the new board is in production yet or if it is, there's no plans to bring it to western markets. The old boards were out of stock last I heard too, so good luck finding one. They do work fine with the slim variants, if you can live with the lesser battery life.

>T530/W530
This is the first I've heard of an IPS mod existing for either model. Their stock 1080p panels are still gorgeous though, even if they are TN. Can't say I see much reason to go through the effort to swap it out. Even the viewing angles are surprisingly decent for TN, and the colors are amazingly vibrant.

Unfortunately the B156HW01 V7 (the revered 1080p TN panel) is long out of production and almost impossible to get your hands on these days. Every single ebay/aliexpress/etc seller I've seen will send you a compatible model. No guarantees.

Out of the box ? Depends more on your DE than the distro. All the "just werks" distros paired with a DE like KDE, GNOME, Xfce, or probably any other DE is going to have these buttons working out of the box.

I'd advise you to go lightly, try Ubuntu or Mint first. Those are easier, generally work better out of the box, and have bigger communities that post solutions to common problems.
If you decide to go with another distro, you can always search the ubuntu solution and adapt to whatever distro you install, but that already requires some knowledge.

Never said it was hard, but you have to be gobbling on that linux dick pretty hard to claim setting things up on it is just as easy as on windows/mac.

I have an x100e I just bought off eBay. I'm using the newest Mint with xfce DE. The fucking thing is almost always at 100% CPU usage and is hotter than a three alarm fire. It was up to 175°F earlier tonight.

I've tried almost everything to fix this problem. I need a forever fix. I keep reading that it has to do with outdated ATI drivers or something. If anyone knows how I can get this thing to work properly, I'll be forever in your debt.
>>
>>56386973
If you are fine with the aspect ratio, I encourage a Dell precision mobile workstation over a nuthinkpad. As stuck up as I may sound, I recently upgraded from my x61t to an x260 and it was so miserable I ended up reselling it after two months. My good buddy uses an m4600(I think) and it is freaking awesome, the build quality and keyboard are top notch, and he has no issues with native Linux support, if you do go that route.

I am aware it was on unrelated hardware, I had imagined the principle was the same, as it is with every other computer I have experience with. Did a little research and found this, not sure that the legacy ATMEL chip is still implemented on all of the "new" thinkpads, but you used to be able to solder it up to the serial interface on a seperate computer and just monitor the output.

Either or, it's still possible with less than a day's work, my friend! I remembered my Sec+ teach saying he cracked his SVP on an old T40, and assumed he had just booted into a liveboot distro, but now I see that it likely required a bit more work than that. Also, I am sure our friend Anon is more than capable of doing it either way.
>>
>>56388824
Look, I know it's possible, but if you can't see how misleading you sounded, then you must be autistic.

Popping in a live cd and running some software is not the same, on any level, as getting specific hardware and motherboard specifications, soldering stuff, etc...

Can you see the difference now?

>>
>>56389101
I did exactly that, though? I stated in my second response that what I had said was false, IE as soon as I realized I was wrong I stated such. Again, I don't know what you're going for, because you continually "make points" on subjects that don't apply to me considering the accusations you are making have zero leverage and are false. My first reply to you: "I am aware that the hardware was unrelated, I had imagined the principle to be the same..." and if you need me to continue recapping, I then went out of my way to find a solution that DID work, because I felt bad for providing misinformation. I would like to add that you needn't let me know that you "sometimes talk shit, too," as it is blatantly apparent through your previous messages.
>>
>>56389078
Yes, you can disable the dGPU in your Device Manager, or in the nVidia control panel, assuming you are on windows. The process is the same on most linux distributions, just differing softwares.

I bought a T530 awhile back and now it's my daily driver at school. I really like it, it's so much better than my HP notebook. It feels so damn robust, and it runs both quiet and cool, get's a bit warm on the underside but I rarely have it in my lap.
I put an Msata ssd in it and it boots really fast. I'm very happy with it. And the trackpoint is great! I wish it was more of a bowl than a dome but it's still really handy.

I feel a bit out of place with all the macbooks everywhere though. How come they are so popular among students?

Not sure what qualities it has over Lenovo, I know latitudes have an HDMI port instead of Display Port.

I got bored and bid it up just a bit

I'm trying to help buddy get decent laptop. His boyfriend wants to get a fucking Macbook. Not a MBP, not a MBA, just the new pink Macbook

How do I get him to understand that this is a bad idea, and that my buddy (not the dude getting the Macbook) should get a good condition T430?

I think the people I bought this keyboard from covered it in some odd plastic covering or something to make it look like it's in better shape than it actually is, unless this is how all thinkpad keyboards act? It's not as noticeable as the picture makes it look, I tilted it so it's perfectly noticeable in a reflective light. When I got it the keyboard felt much scratchy-er and less smooth than my old one, so I think with time it'll wear down to the same feeling as my old one. Anyway, has anyone else had an experience like this before? Is this abnormal? The decals are certainly not coming off, it's just an odd film of some type that's revealing a more thinkpad-like glossy-ness below it.
>>
>>56394765
Is it shininess? My T420 has a bunch of shiny keys. It just happens
>>
>>56394817
Well yeah but I've had it and used it for a week and it's already that obvious, and it has a non-traditional feel to the keys (And still does). Probably just got chink'd from the seller, but it still works fine, it'll just get shiny keys real soon I bet.
>>
>>56394190
Found your machine on eBay. I'd buy it, but goddamn it's expensive. Especially for a fun toy.
>>56394865
Was it brand new? You got chinked if you thought it was new

Nah they didn't say it was new, they said it was used, I just think they lied about the shape it was in, and they painted over it pretty fancily with some covering that makes it look great right out of the packaging.

Pic related is a comparison. The one on the right is the old one with a modest amount of shiny, since it was well used. Left is the one I bought, and the filmy shit is coming off. Notice it's less shiny in general.
>>
>>56394765
Now I'm a bit bummed since I ordered from the same place as you...

The nip board I have for my 220 I got used and it's just a tad bit shiny here and there, not even close as bad.
>>
>>56394941
Yeah... Sorry to bum, but I think they just used tricky tactics. I really didn't notice it until I put it in direct lighting, so it's certainly not as bad as I'm making it look, just curious and unfortunate.

>>
>>56395003
Who knows, I might get lucky.
>>
>>56395017
Yeah that's about how bad my old one was, minus your wasd keys... I'm not gonna risk rubbing this filmy shit off it, I'm just gonna let it go and see if the lettering comes off with it or what. If it does, I'll proably buy another from a more reputable dealer. Kinda doubt it will, though, I've already kinda picked at it, that's why it looks all scratchy.

>>56395054
Let me know if yours feels all odd when you get it, because other than the shitty fake quality they put on it, it works fine and is obviously a legitimate keyboard.
>>
Any idea how to unfuck my keyboard backlight?

X230 running Ubuntu MATE 16.04
It turns on all the time, basically every time there is a change in screen brightness. So on boot, when plugging in, unplugging, screen dimming, etc. I always need to manually switch it off again.

Disabled in BIOS for now but would be cool to get it working properly.

What is the difference between a t420 and t420i? I can't find anything about this online, and it's annoying me a bit now.

Ask him for the specs of the of the new macbook is and then ask him what he will be using it for. If it's not more than browsing the web and typing up papers, tell him the mac is a waste of fucking money. Also remind him that macbooks are for faggots.

Hey TPG, fuckin apologies in advance for asking to be spoon fed, but I'm a student in need of a laptop and need recs

Budget is $580 cash savings, but I can add like $50 if need be

Considering buying a new X260 for like $630 with the work perk, is this a bad idea if I'm gonna have to poverty spec it?

Is it better to have i5 over i3 or to upgrade to an SSD over the stock hard drive?

If buying new is dumb, I can get the W520 for $580 shipped with Win7 Pro,that seems like a decent option

Do i want windows 10?? Running 7 on my desktop and I've never been bothered by it but I'm probably gonna have the thing for a few years so I don't want it to go obsolete

I guess my requirements are budget obviously, Smaller screen ~15" or under, reasonably portable, just need a good working laptop to browse the internet and do basic tasks on

Dank u
>>
how bad is it to use a thinkpad in bed? can I cause any damage if I make sure the tempreatures don't get too high?
>>
>>56395489
T420 or T430 faggot. Go buy a used one in good condition on ebay for cheap, buy an ssd and slap that shit in there and call it good.
>>
>>56395653
>T420 when he has the budget for a W520
Fuck no. W520 is a straight upgrade and makes the T420 look no better than cheap consumer shit you'd find at walmart.
>>
>>56395492
Thinkpads actually have decent ventilation from the sides, just don't completely block the fan. Obviously you'd be better off setting it on a lap desk or book or something but as long as you're not maxing out the cpu while it's laying on a thick blanket you should be fine
>>
>>56395479
That is EXACTLY what he wants it for. For school papers and web browsing.
Legit, this was his words, him in greentext, me in normal text
>I was looking to get the pink Macbook Air
>It even comes with free Beats headphones!
>And I get a student discount
But why exactly do you want a Mac? You do realize they are massively overpriced? And that there is no anti virus software for it that actually works? And the fact that you're living with a software engineer who works exclusivley on Windows and Linux PCs, so he can actually fix your shit for free, but not fix a Mac
>I don't care! Look, it's either this or a designer backpack
Designer backpack?
>A Louie Vaton (I can't spell this shit) backpack! They cost about the same. It's designer, and it has a lifetime warranty! I'd just have to drive to Miami to get it
Really? Why the hell would you ever spend that much money on a bag? Won't you get tired of it in just a few weeks?
>I want one of them. Mostly out of vanity, if I'm being honest
>And I'll let [insert name here] use my old computer, seeing as he doesn't have one
(He has a HP Pavilion something or other with an i7, 8GB of RAM, and a dGPU)
Wait, you're not gonna outright give it to him?
>No, it's still mine. I'll use it to store stuff.

So that's where we're at now. Also, he said Macbook Air. But the pink 12" model is a Macbook. The kind with USB C only.
>>
>>56395722
Why are you friends with this person? He sounds repulsive.
>>
>>56395766
To be honest, he can be difficult. He's your stereotypical gay man. But he's not a bad guy at heart. He just has expensive tastes. And doesn't work much. And blows money like no one I've ever met before...
Anyways, those things aside, he's nice. But his decision making skills leave a lot to be desired.
>>
>>56393422
The X201 is one of my all-time favorites, and my go-to when I actually need to travel. But I use the palm rest with no trackpad on it because it gets in the way when I try to aim the trackpoint. Where do you think we'll go when we're forced to abandon Windows in 2020?
>>
>>56395722
Your friend sounds like he has more dollars than he has sense.

I'll be getting a laptop for college, was planning to get the X250 or X260, but I randomly stumbled upon a good deal on the 2016 Macbook Air and it's really tempting

My t400 takes quite a bit to connect back to wifi after coming from sleep mode. What can I do to make it faster?

My T400 very often had wifi issues as well. It would say the wlan card had disconnected a lot.

I reseated it and it works fine now. Maybe give that a try?

>>56395946
He doesn't have many dollars is the problem... Works part time 3 days a week. Paying for these things with student grants

Alright
My uncle does graphics design. He has a Macbook Pro (newest model), a Mac Pro desktop for his 3D intensive work, the Apple display things (2 of em), plus a Macbook Air (highest end model)

He uses the Macbook Air plenty, and likes it, but feels he spent too much money on the thing to begin with. He feels his money was better spent on the Macbook Pro. The Air is a great shitposting machine, however.

I recommend for college to go cheap. Unless you're studying something that would benefit from newer hardware, you'd be taken great care of with a W530. It's cheaper than anything you've listed, and has high expandibility. Get the highest end model you can. If you can afford a Macbook or a brand new thinkpad, you can get a highend W530.

My uncle used my T420. Loved it, but wants to stick with what he knows (OS X).
>>
>>56378022
Same here, who does this and why? I'm also missing the lenovo logo on the outside, but I'm not missing that one
>>
Recently bought the T430 and today I have experienced the low quality build of the keyboard (arrow down key had this issue samehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XClLEMTVI5Q , broke 2 of the small plastic protrusions that hold a scissors on two keys, even though i tried to be very careful, the keys still seem to work normally even with that right one missing, hoping they don't stop working with use) but I still love the rest of it, it's the only downside for me yet.
>>
>>56397005
Here's the picture of the scissors and arrow that points to what broke on two keys when i swapped them because the layout is shit (not US like i like it but some swiss/french bullshit)
