IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Would a refurbished x220 with a 128 gig SSD have enough space for Linux + programs if I'm just going to use it as an addition to my main machine as a way to learn Linux? Like, is it enough for a full web dev stack or would a 256 gig HDD be better?

Yes, the X220 has one slot for a small drive of 9.5mm height which can be an SSD or a HDD, and separately, underneath the keyboard, it has an mSATA slot

mSATAs are normally not quite as fast as SSDs but still much faster than HDDs

Some high storage you could get without paying out your ass would be a decent sized mSATA inside the laptop for your OS and main programs, and a large say 1TB HDD in the hard drive slot for most of your other stuff, but it is possible to run the computer just from the mSATA alone.
X220 has 2 slots for drives basically, so you can get the one with the HDD if you're also willing to pay for an mSATA and put it in as well, then reinstalling/installing whatever OS onto the mSATA and formatting the HDD
>>
>>56351787
The mSATA is SATA2 while the 3.5 bay (and ultrabay on the t/w models) are SATA3 which is 2x as fast. Its still fast though. My T420 boots in 5 seconds with xubutnu from one.
>>
>>56351279
Yes, but also consider the Elitebook 2560p as an option, it's the better laptop imho

I think it might be 7mm yea, I just know that there's slightly larger ones that fit the X201 and X200, that don't fit the X220 and X230

My friend has an X220 and my OCZ Vertex 4 doesn't fit in the slot so it's certainly not 9mm.
Also the top most part of the screen assembly where the antenas are has broken, I just don't think the X220 is all that impressive at all, don't know why /g/ likes it so much.
>>
>>56351855
I'd take any laptop that has a good keyboard, decent CPU/memory, and is lightweight for <$200, but there aren't a ton of options

>>
>>56351884
There's other business class laptops, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook.
>>
I am thinking of either choosing a t400 or a x200/1. What would /tpg/ pick for about $150 max for a shitposting, torrenting and porn machine that is decent enough to do all that. Does not have to be powerful as I already have a primary i7 desktop, and a x220 primary travel laptop.
>>
>>56351909
I've looked at Latitudes since they're about the same price point for performance, but I like the keyboard of the x220 better, and it's lighter.
>>
>>56351884

Dell Latitude E6420/E6430/E6220 (the E6220 is the 12.1" model and it's awesome).

HP EliteBooks aren't too bad but I'd take Dell over them or ThinkPads, no BIOS whitelist bullshit to deal with, easy to work on, just better in my opinion.

I've owned ThinkPads since the first one long ago and they just aren't worth their cost anymore. Lenovo has simply ruined them past the -20 series and they should be avoided.

I got myself a x200 with the p8600 processor for libreboot purposes (i've been posting this for a while)

Now I see that the asus c201 chromebook is compatilble with libreboot. Is the newest laptop compatible (i think)

Is there a way to compare these two laptops performance wise? I know they are different architectures with different characteristic parameters but, is there any magnitude to compare???

I can't find a website that compares cpus this way, they either compare computer-grade with computer-grade, or mobile with mobile.

Any ideas? I feel that the p8600 may have fell behind ARMs...

I cant do anything on my t420 without it saying an error occured.

I dont know what to do

I think it began with i listened to advice on stupid question general and someone gave me a purposely shitty thing to type in.

I did a fresh install of Windows 8 deleting everything on my drive.

Then did a fresh install of Ubuntu deleting everything on my drive.

When i had windows 8 briefly i downloaded firefox but it would crash on startup.

Now on Ubuntu basically everything fucks up but Firefox opens after a while.

Anyone have advice?

I dont remember entirely as ive been up all night.

There were a lot of errors the first time i saw the red circle with a white line through it. Something about 6 different issues of e: (something like that)

It also said something like type apt-get to find the missing components. I did so but then halfway through it messed up and said the package failed or something similar. It said "report problem?". I figured might as well but when i clicked to report problem it failed.

The last time i looked at the red dot it said something along the lines of failed to check for updates.

Im reinstalling ubuntu now without encrypting any folders. Just a basic normal install in hopes thatll work. My next course of action is in looking up how dpkg or fsck work and if theyre the answer

I "upgraded" recently from a T410 that I had been using for the past three years to a T440, seeing that it was a really good deal considering its specs.

I can't believe that they trashed like half the shit I liked about Thinkpads. The new keyboard feels awful, the new trackpad feels awful, there are no helpful LED lights to signal charging/caps lock/whatever, pageup/pagedown instead of back/forward beside the arrow keys...

Honestly, I wish I had just stuck with my old laptop, even if this one is stronger.
>>
>>56350992
>Thinking about getting a second hand X200. Anyone here owned one? How are they?
I own two (well, one is a X200s).

They are AWESOME machines and a classic ThinkPad. 16:10 is good enough, though I wish they were like the X60 which is 4:3.

Make sure you get a 2.4GHz or 2.53GHz machine if you're getting a X200. If you manage, you can also get 2.13GHz X200s, but these would come with a 6mb cache (instead of 3mb on the X200 P8*00 series intels).

The LCDs are a bit of a lottery, but they're decent enough for what the laptop is -- expects you to be in a well lit room.

In particular the X200S is built like a tank, with a roll cage and its a bit thinner and lighter. I love that machine.

First thing you need to do though is:

- Get a new battery
- Get 8GB (2x4GB) of SO-DIMM 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
- Get yourself a SSD, doesn't need to be fancy, you're going to be bottlenecked by SATA-II.

If you get the X200, it's not too hard to use coreboot which makes your boot up times negligible. If you're brave, you can also go to libreboot which removes intel's botnet all together.

>I "upgraded" recently from a T410 that I had been using for the past three years to a T440, seeing that it was a really good deal considering its specs.

I hope you kept your T410. Those were the last good ThinkPads before they started chasing the shitbucks.

T420 went 16:9 which is cancer. T430 went chiclet, then they dropped the indicator LEDs and more.

Return it and wait for the ThinkPad classic.

I'll deliver later today anon, but here's the gist of it
There's a digispark board with a 100 ohm resistor on one of the IO pins, which is then hooked to pin 21 of the keyboard connector. The USB contacts were soldered to an extra smart card reader ribbon cable. The digispark sets the IO pin as high-impedance while caps lock is off, and low impedance while on, allowing current to flow through the LED, through the resistor and to ground, allowing it to turn on
pretty simple really

for example, right now I have a t430. I repasted it myself. I could swap out optical drive for an ultrabay adapter and put in a 1tb drive in addition to my 256gb 850 evo and have a fucking portable powerhouse.

years ago, I didn't know that, and I wasted $350 on a g-series lenovo laptop that was a total piece of shit.
i could have saved some $ had i known better.

should we always withhold information, even if the people asking the questions are obvious retards and illiterates?

we played starcraft, portal, and ate pizza. but i remember one of the things we did was go into his backyard and play with nerf swords.

i never felt more embarrassed. I guess it was just all the times that i was shamed during my childhood that didn't let me retain the innocence of being a kid, but i didn't want to participate because the thought of being seen was too much.

The x230 is better in every way possible EXCEPT the lack of a seventh row in the keyboard. Only that little bit.

Now if you talked about a x201 with updated internals and screen, I'd be all over that shit with a shitton of paper money on my hands.

>>
>>56356631
What happened in 2012?
>>
>>56357413

Welp, the display is unconfortable, but not unbearable.

Getting used to the trackpoint, is painful.

The laptop is even prettier when you see it live. Cleaned it all up with glassex and alcohol, and now i'm intalling antergos because muh gnome and muh aur.

The key thing here is that i planned to use this as a shitpostan machine, but the tablet is way more confortable.

I feel a bit confused about why in hell did i buy this, so for now i won't provide it with SSD or anything. No more euros on this thing for a while.

Is your x220 your only laptop?
>>
I have a T410 and its starting to show its age. What is the closest thing I can get but with better CPU/GPU? I'm really at a loss.

T420 doesn't seem like a significant performance increase and I see myself in this position again in not too long. T430 has chicklet keyboard and T440 actually removed the trackpad buttons.

W520 is a kind of big. Thoughts?
>>
>>56357570
Took me a few days to get used to the trackpoint as well, it'll grow on you! Now I can't be without it.

Nah, I have an X220, an X220t and the X200s. Just can't turn down a good offer.

All you have to do is take it apart, apply arctic silver 5, and disinfect body and keys with a cotton ball and some alcohol.

if it really irks you, you can replace the palmrest and kb but mine came from a refurber so they were already new.

You mean what I experience while having this laptop on my lap or you mean the CPU/GPU temperature?
GPU under full load never gets higher than 92C degrees (mostly 90C when playing fallout 4). CPU is 85-90 with typical load when gayming. It gets 100-105 (close to emergency shutdown) when it's 100% loaded with full loaded GPU, but I've never seen it shut down. Basically throttling kicks in after it exceeds 100C. Funny thing is disabling HT immediately drops the temperature by 10C. You don't even have to disable turbo in that case.
>>

you aren't vram bound you tard
you are gpu/cpu bound because the gpu is a piece of shit

On the Advanced Dock and Windows 7, it's as simple as pressing Fn+F7 and switching to the external monitor plugged into the GPU. When I'm done with it, I just do the same thing again to switch back to the internal screen. I've even got it set up so that I can run both screens at the same time, with the external set as the "default" monitor so that new programs run using the eGPU while the iGPU continues to drive others that were started before turning on the eGPU. Comfy as fuck thanks to the T60p's Flexview screen letting me do pic related without impacting readability.

Everything is trying to be an Apple clone

The Gooks at lel-no-innovo don't realize that the Thinkpad had distinct features that separated it from media consumption machines.

They had a winning formula from IBM

All they had to do was make an effort into selecting good hardware, adding good screen options, having good battery selection etc

No, instead we had to get muh thin and a bunch of consumer tier garbage with a thinkpad logo slapped on it

And the battery isn't even that great either; even with a fairly new main battery, and a new slice battery, runtime is absolute trash. I've rarely had over 6 hours, which is not much better than my W520. But every time I pick the fucker up, I'm just astounded at how well-built it is.

While that's the second-generation Carbon you posted there, which they acknowledge was a mistake, by and large you are right. It doesn't even make business sense because if you are primarily a laptop manufacturer, Apple is the wrong fucking company to be copying right now. >they get upset and 'have to go to mac now'
I haven't thought about going Mac, especially with this whole USB-C meme, but honestly the newest Thinkpads just seem thoroughly unimpressive to me. I have a T540p at work, and I'm always elated when I come home to the W520. No idea what I'll replace it with when it eventually becomes too old and shitty to do anything.

As for the X300, when you consider what it was up against in 2008 (ie, the original Macbook Air), it's extremely impressive. The competition was peddling soldered RAM, a single USB port and 1280x800 resolution when Lenovo could give you proper RAM modules, three USB ports, an optical drive and a 1440x900 screen in something that was not much thicker or heavier. The brightness of the X300's screen is actually comparable to my T540p at work, so I would not really say it's "sad" by any stretch. The only thing that really does suck is the ULV processor, which from what I recall could barely outperform a Pentium 4.
>>
>>56367431
I bought a T400 new for university in 2009. P9500 processor with the ATI graphics. While the HD 3470 could handle stuff like Rome: Total War, Civ IV and UT 2004 with ease, it was really not capable of anything more. It could do Starcraft II, TF2 and the like on medium settings, but as those titles were updated over the years, the bloat set in and the T400 couldn't keep up. It also doesn't help that the latest drivers from Lenovo are from early 2012.

Now I've sort of put the ATI card to sleep permanently and I use it as a Linux shitposting machine.

>and you can hardly blame them when Apple puts about 90% of its effort into developing what essentially amounts to a toy.
Apple makes devices. We can think whatever about them but they have a core identity and featureset.

The Thinkpad line had this same core featureset before Lenovo decided to start refashioning it for absolutely no reason. It's a mistake to apply consumer habits and strategies to an enterprise line.

Lenovo has no pride in the core feature set of the line so they had no problem damaging the reputation by making all these large mistakes.

To shift the blame from Lenovo for a bit, I think it's also fair to consider that the lifecycle of devices in general has gotten shorter in recent years. Enterprise has gotten used to a shorter consumption cycle so there is no reason to go the extra mile with quality.
>>
>>56367629
>I think it's also fair to consider that the lifecycle of devices in general has gotten shorter in recent years

Has it? Hardware wise the best most things do is make them more power efficient, but even then a 65w vs 95w was $10 a year. Sooner or later we'll have '4k capable' machines for cheap.

>Hardware wise the best most things do is make them more power efficient, but even then a 65w vs 95w was $10 a year.
Yes, it has stalled recently but it's going to take a long time for the corporate machine to adjust to these changes and start demanding higher quality. This might not even happen because giants like Lenovo make greater profits by cycling cheaper quality hardware as opposed to supporting better hardware for longer periods of time.

While technologically we are starting to stall with processing speed and other important features we are entrenched in the short life cycle economically

Apple is a genius company, not because of the Chinese consumertard garbage they churn out but due to the market strategy they have created around it. They have lead the market in planned obsolescence and companies like Lenovo are learning and adapting.

I think the future is cheap shit hardware with short lifespans upheld by poor documentation, servicing, self repair options, firmware availability, and part support
>>
>>56367629
Honestly I think the reputational damage has only occurred in the enthusiast community, which Lenovo doesn't care about. At this point enterprise is their target market, and enterprise buys these computers out of habit, good or bad. If the screens are shit, they don't care, it's the employees who suffer. If the keyboard is shit, they don't care, again it's not the executives who are going to suffer.

As far as Lenovo is concerned, so long as enterprise keeps doing what it is doing, they haven't made any mistakes.

This is true and it was true when applied to IBM as well except that IBM had a certain consistency (perhaps a product of self respect)

The best thing they could have done was not to touch the core lines. Just re-release with newer hardware while keeping everything the same. Unfortunately they decided to cheapen up the line and mask it as redesign and modernization. The gooks shamelessly chase margins which led to a bunch of abortions with the Thinkpad logo

I do think it's damaging to the brand to some extent to release a ton of garbage. Remember that Shitpads used to be much more popular in academia and private professionals, which aren't exactly small markets.

Playing around with the new x200, i realized why tablets are so popular for browsing.

When you use a tablet, you have it in your hands, and place it wherever it feels confortable for your neck.

When you use a laptop, you have it in your lap, and the head must point there, regardless whether it is confortable or not for your neck.

So, using the laptop as a shitpostan machine, on the sofa, is unconfortable

I think when IBM was in the game, laptops were slightly more important. But remember that those fuckers also dropped the ball, since there were all sorts of flexing motherboard problems and the like on later T4x series. Quality actually improved a bit under Lenovo in that regard, at least at first.

As for Academia and private professionals, I think they have mostly switched to Macs and Lenovo could not care less. But at some point, Dell and HP are going to start wooing enterprise over to their own business lines. And then Lenovo will be trapped under its own shitty reputation. And rest assured, they will be in trouble.
