Do you guys know of any very quiet or near silent keyboards?

I recently bought one of those silicone keyboards, one with a full 100+ keys, but there is horrible ghosting (at times it occurs when just two keys are pressed, and one will not get inputted), sometimes it won't pick up my keystrokes, and it even will duplicate keys on occasion.

I don't live alone, and I can't have the RATATATATA of a keyboard going on all night.
Does anybody know of any good quiet keyboards?

Would not like mechanical, as I have mild RSI/carpal tunnel and I don't need to be pressing down super hard either.
>>
>>56321341
Brown or clear switches dont make a lot of noise. Also look at gayming keyboards. They dont have issues with ghosting.

they can be useful if you take out people's drives to check a lot (like repair, scan etc)

no, external drives tend to be enclosed which means you're less likely to fry it by accident when you handle it.

I'm having a weird experience /g/.

Since people have said that Cortana can't be easily disabled after the anniversary update to W10, I decided to Google how to do it. In the first page I found, some symptoms of having Cortana enabled were listed, I noticed that I was suffering none of those. It then pointed me to some place in the registry, so obviously I went and opened my registry, and when I was just about to navigate to the right place (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search) I found that I was already somewhere very similar (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search) and that the place that I was supposed to navigate to was actually no where to be found.

Does this indicate that I've disabled Cortana already and simply don't remember doing it? Or is she still alive?

Also, a question from a friend of mine who hasn't touched W10 in like 8 months (he's wisely dropped it for Linux). "Why can't you just delete the [Cortana] program outright? Just write some zeros into the executable, or if Windows 10 keeps on repairing it with every update, can't you just make a batch file and put it in startup to delete it (or you can even setup a service to run as admin)?".

Can anyone answer that?

How do you handle constructor exceptions without terminating when using threads?
try{
std::thread threadHigh(quicksort<T>, std::ref(numbers), i, high);
std::thread threadLow(quicksort<T>, std::ref(numbers), low, j);
threadHigh.join();
threadLow.join();
}
catch(const std::system_error& e){
std::lock_guard<std::mutex> block(error_mutex);
std::cout << "Sys code " << e.code() << " meaning " << e.what() << std::endl;
}
catch(std::exception& e){
std::lock_guard<std::mutex> block(error_mutex);
std::cout << "Code " << e.what() << std::endl;
}

After this stupidly generates a thousand or so threads, I get an system error exception "generic:11" "resource unavailable try again: resource unavailable try again". I added a try-catch block to deal with it but the program still crashes when it exits the catch block.

How do i install a GPU?

just got my RX480, plugged it in the PCIe slot, connected a monitor, second monitor is connected to the Motherboard with an APU
Boot - secondary monitor turns on, windows tries automatically install new drivers but stops at ~5%

reboot to bios, set the primary graphics to PCIe in the northbridge settings, reboot, bios loads fine, i can see everything, but then the screen goes black

I have not yet installed the drivers, but when i try it warns me that:
"your graphics card is not compatible with the current graphics driver. It is recommended to continue using your current driver, since an update can lead to unexpected errors. If you decide to update, yuo first have to uninstall all incompatible GPUs"

does it mean the catalyst install manager and catalyst control center? if i uninstall them, will i be unable to use the APU graphics at all? I'd prefer to keep it for my second monitor, since i only have DVI
Im afraid that if i ignore the warning and just install new drivers nothing will work and i wont be able to revert it

Is there a physical limit on clock speed?

Just wondering, if something like a 2-core processor that ran at something like 8ghz could potentially exist with current cpu technology. Am I wrong at thinking 2x8ghz cores would output similar heat to 4x4ghz cores?

I'd assume the issue is that the clock pulses become too short, requiring a higher voltage, which means more robust transistor sizes, which means larger die sizes. All of that leads to higher heat output.

Is there a niche market I don't know about with really fast single threaded hardware, or is single threading dead for applications that need speed?

So how much does the speed rating on RAM actually matter if all you're gonna do is play video games. I'm doing my first build, and I've been reading that there is virtually no difference between 2133 and 3200. If all you're gonna do is game then is there any reason to buy anything faster than 2133?

Is it bad if the paint on an older PC case is starting to chip off?

It's about 7 years old, a black Thermaltake Japanese steel Lanbox case with the handle, with a Core i7 920, been running it at base clock speed (2.6 GHz) anywhere from 8-12 hours a day nonstop for the last 7 years, did some heavy gaming with it. The CPU temp goes anywhere from 70 (at idle) to 90-ish degrees (on load) celsius for the last 3 or 4 years using the stock cooler. Shuts off when I game too long/overheating. There's a 90 mm fan at the front that takes air in, and one 60 mm at the back that pushes out air. The power supply is one of those older ones that doesn't suck air from the bottom/top, it's only one fan that pushes air out the back. So the CPU gets nice and toasty.

All 4 pegs underneath have broken off and I think it was due to the heat. Whenever I move the case to work on it, and then put it back, it leaves small bits of chipped black paint. Is it poisonous?

On another note, what's usually the first thing to go on a rig that tells you it's time to put it to rest? The PSU, GPU, CPU, RAM, pretty much everything is still going strong except the case (one of the 60 mm fans melted, so that's why there's only one at the back right now, haven't replaced it yet), I think as long as I find a better cooler for this old CPU it could probably just keep going without any problems. In fact my monitor is starting to show signs of dying already and it's only like 5 years old.

>this whole post

jesus christ dude. the chipped paint is the least of your worries. get a better case, get a better cpu heatsink/fan, get better case fans. this won't even cost that much money, you can find perfectly fine cases and case fans cheap as shit on newegg.
>>
>>56326471
It's a good case though. The reason why I'm not worried about the other fan is that it didn't really help, plus it was near the GPU, which has its own blower type fan. The CPU just needs a good cleaning and a better cooler, but the stock one has worked alright for 7 years, so I don't really need to replace it, I just have to watch out for the temps. It doesn't shut off or get into the high 90s unless I really push it and play for a super long time, but I know better.

I just want to make sure I'm not making toxic waste by having the paint come off/melt.

I already built a new PC so this one is going to be for backup, it wouldn't make sense to invest too much more into it.

sry to post twice, but /flt/ is dead

I feel like the biggest autist because I cant decide on a DE to use.

Days wasted just switching between Xfce, MATE and Cinnamon for hours.

Not really a fan of Gnome or KDE.

Feel like Xfce is really solid, but also stagnating currently. Updates are rare and currently their objective seems to be to port the existing parts to GTK3, which pushes other improvements on its interface even further back.

MATE seems ok. Couldn't point anything out, that I particularly like or dislike about it so far.

Cinnamon looks nice, but I am wondering why literally no one seems to use it on here. A bit more restrictive with its integration to the Muffin WM also..

>if that didnt help its not a good case
Oh, that was just a supplementary fan, you can't blame the entire case. I meant that it didn't help the CPU because it wasn't near it, it was for the GPU which did help, but I didn't need it because the GPU already did good with its own fan. If anything I'd blame the power supply for not having an extra fan underneath to suck up the hot air from the CPU, but then again, you can't blame it either because it's jsut a different design.

If you can, get a modular PSU so you have less clutter blocking airflow. Otherwise use zip-ties to secure the wires where they dont block airflow.
Clean out all the air intakes and fans plus the CPU heatsink from dust with some kind of brush (dish or paintbrush works well) and compressed air (make sure fans dont spin or you wear out the bearings).
Make sure all the fans are pushing air thru them.

Not a router, a switch. You don't need a second network or a second wifi AP, you just need to split the line. Switches are pretty cheap and take no additional setup. They're pretty much a powered splitter.

https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-5-Port-Ethernet-Desktop-TL-SF1005D/dp/B000FNFSPY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472516979&sr=8-1&keywords=switch

There are also ways to run a line out of your computer using a USB/ethernet adapter or setting up your wifi card as an AP, but I think the switch is going to be the easiest option for you.

So I tried to install babby's first linux.
I got a live debian kde, made a bootable usb, and used that, working so far.
Then I decided to install it on one of my sata hdds, so I could use my first hdd for win7 and then tell the bios to boot into the second when I wanted to boot into debian.
The installer partitioned and formatted the second hard drive just fine, then it asked if I wanted to install grub to the first disk, and I said no. I told it to install grub to the second hard drive, the one now holding the debian os, and I figured that would let me boot into it by manually selecting that hard drive from the bios.
So my first disk with win7 still boots normally, and my second disk with debian shows up in the bios, but when I try to boot from it I get a black screen with ye olde blinking "_".

Nope. Even a cheap switch has basically no impact on your connection when you're only running a handful of devices through it. The $10 one is limited to 100Mbps speeds, but that's faster than most people's internet connections and fairly decent for file transfers.

Do modern LED monitors get burn in?

I have this super old 4:3 Viewsonic LCD that has irc displayed on it basically 99% of the time that it is on and the burn in on it is absolutely insane. If I put a dark background over it, you see all this.

If I get another LED monitor to use as a secondary, to replace the old Viewsonic, I don't want it to get burn in like this.

Boot up a live cd with the same version of grub2 and reinstall it. Or install easybcd in windows and use that to reinstall grub2. While you're at it you can put the windows loader in charge of letting you pick an OS so you don't have to use the bios boot menu to do it.

Depends on the model of the phone and the carrier. Often times if you've used it long enough and you don't owe anything you can just call them up and they'll give you the code.

Wow I came to this board with a question I knew most would see as stupid so I wasn't sure if I should ask it, and here this thread is. Nice.

Anyways, I know I will sound retarded but is there a way to convert a torrent to .mp4? Like after I've completely finished downloading a torrent, can I then convert it into a different file type? I would like to be able to access the file even if I decided to uninstall the torrent downloader.

>>
>>56331055

You do sound a bit retarded for asking to convert a file into a completely different type of file.

A torrent file tells your torrent software what to download, it isn't a video.

What type of file is actually being downloaded? Most torrents are mkv.

To answer your question, you could use Handbrake or ffmpeg to convert one video type to another video type.

there is zero anonymity if it's linked to your name. they just need to send a request to your VPS provider.
You need to get a real VPN provider so privacy laws are in effect, and preferably pay it with cryptocurrency while you're using TOR or send them a letter with some cash enclosed so they cant track your info.

>>
>>56331185

I still don't really understand what you're asking. Are you looking for the torrent files or the mp4 files? Uninstalling torrent software shouldn't have deleted anything. Although it's possible some software deleted the torrent files automatically once it was loaded (but not the downloaded content), since you don't really need them after that.

Either way, if the files are deleted then they are deleted. You could try and restore them with recovery software like photorec.
>>
>>56331185
you probably deleted the files you downloaded accidentally in some other way. if you uninstall your torrent program it doesn't delete the files you downloaded, it just uninstalls the program

when you open a .torrent file in the program, it should give you a choice where to download the files. set it to somewhere you will remember. easiest way is to just set it to your download folder. i think it defaults there.
>>
>>56331274

If that guy with the torrent questions is still here, here's a simplified explanation of torrenting:

There's a client (program you dl) that opens torrent files (instructions to find files) which it uses to get some files.

If you download a client and then save a torrent file and open it in the client you'll start downloading the files the torrent points to.

After the download finishes, you have 3 things:

1) Torrent client.
2) Torrent file.
3) Downloaded files from the torrent.

If you delete 1 and 2 it doesn't affect 3.

Each part is separate from one another.
