Muh laptop will not go to sleep when running Windows 10.
It's fine with GNU/Linux. Powercfg -requests gives me nothing.

which windows should i install, 8.1 or 7? I understand that windows 7 is for the most part better however it is much older than 8.1. Would it not be better to go with a newer version? Also should i pirate it or not.

does anyone know anything about the acer xf240h ?
it's the same price as a benQ xl2411z in europe, cheaper in the US, and it has freesync.
it's so cheap I'm afraid the colours will be complete shit, but I can't find any reviews online
>>
>>56288758
age is not an issue as long as it still gets security updates.

get 10 if you dont care about MS / NSA spying on you.
get 7 if you care about it and you can remove those spyware updates.

stay away from 8/8.1 there's zero reasons to get it.

also pirate of course.

got a few good ratings by newegg buyers

only review i could find: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drc4IZEfR8E

i'd probably get the benq one if it has actual reviews by hardware sites over the acer.

I don't speak what seems to be polish so this review won't help me much, they didn't even write anything on screen I can google translate

I'm not in a hurry, I was just thinking of buying a 144hz 24" so I looked around and found this acer, which seemed interesting.
I'll just wait for review to pop up

I bought a Bose Quietcomfort 35 headset and I cannot get it paired through bluetooth to my laptop.
Well linking to it works, but I can't get my laptop to recognize it as a headphone.

I tried to:
>removed all the bluetooth software and reinstalled the latest drivers
>installed the latest firmware on the headphones and tried to link it throught the USB directly into a USB port (didn't work)

I spent hourrs browsing on the internet but I an't find a solution for it, it links perfectly to my Android tablet.

If I check out in the device manager the headphones aren't connected throught the bluetooth tab, but under the remaining tab as a generic device. Windows simply asks me to install the correct driver because it won't recognise it.

Running Windows 7 on a ASUS P2520LA. The bluetooth dongle seems to be embedded on the wifi of the laptop, Realtek 8821AE

What's a good vpn?
Belgium has stupid retention laws, maffiaa is hunting down on torrent sites. Users next? Bloody google analytics,...,...

>>
>>56288957
routers dont matter, it's a software you install on your PC that encrypts your traffic and sends it thru a server.
>>
>>56288957
why would you want a VPN in belgium for torrenting? there just block torrent sites with DNS bans and that's it. Just google for a proxy or use the website's ip to connect to it directly and you're set
They don't monitor anything, there are zero risks with torrenting.
There's no belgian Hadopi if that's what you're afraid of

>>56289122
>doesn't mean it can't happen
I have retard friends who download anything and everything, and their families who do the same.
I've never found anyone in Belgium, be it a friend or even someone posting something on the internet, that got anything serious for torrenting, ie something more than an american corp sending you an email with no legal value whatsoever.

Torrenting in belgium doesn't require a VPN, the country is too small for anyone to give a shit
>>
>>56289217
still doesnt mean it cant happen unless you can actually show me your copyright infringement laws and prove it's impossible to get a letter or be charged.

and i'm not saying he needs one, but he asked and got an answer.
>>
>>56289273
well if the ISP got an email from a copyright holder, at most they'd forward it to the user.
You need a court decision for anything else to happen, and there's never been one in belgian history concerning this. The BAF (belgian anti-piracy federation) has been trying to do it for years, never once did it happen.
It's exactly the same as streaming movies, it may be illegal but nothing will ever happen.
>>
On Windows 10 my laptop crashes everytime I use the webcam
>>
>>56288998
Yeah, but i use my router as a openvpn client/server. Works great with dd-wrt. Now on asuswrt whitch is a bit more polished and slimmed down.

As an openvpn client it would route all my lan clients trough the vpn. IF the vpn provider uses standard ipenvpn tactics. I read somewhere thats not the case with some
>>
>>56289102
Well, just seems like the pressure is up.. i only download media, ebooks... All my software is ligit. But indeed Belgium is a small country, but I Rather want to be safe than sorry. I don't like it that someone with a court order can use my web history to imply god knows what. Maybe a silly thought in 2016.

Hey, I'm on vacation in Germany and I live in a dorm with protected wifi for its dwellers. For a week it keep disconnecting which is annoying af. There are about 4 routers in the building and it seems that only this one my phone is connecting with is fucked up coz when it connects to another network (router, coz there is one network) works perfectly. I've installed numerous apps but the don't allow me to change router, wifi analyser shows that all of routers are in range of my phone. Fuck, is there a possibility to change the router? Image from analyser shows everything. I want to connect with e4:8d....

So I have a vm running linux, I have it run firefox and use a few extensions that make it automate visiting a few pages, mainly for browser games for collecting daily bonuses, points etc. I use iMacros to do these tasks and my weekly browsing schedule to make it run at a certain time everyday.

Problem is that it seems to slow down to a crawl after a while and just takes forever to run through the tasks. Does anyone have a better solution? I just need it to be able to refresh a page, click a bunch of things once everyday, I have very little programming experience but wouldn't might reading up writing scripts if resources are provided and stuff.

Airdump is reading −70 dBm.
Which I guess isn't a lot.
If its MAC filtering then MAC change should solve it no?
Though I doubt someone that uses the name of the SSID as the password knows about the MAC filtering.

Depends, try years and people names/nick names.
Also password lists are geared towards english speaking people.
Unless it is a common word, it will rarely crack it.

I don't know much when it comes to PSU and I'm in this situation, I want to add a graphics card to my pc and it requires a 6 pin connector, looking on amazon I found pic related but I dont know if I have to use two molex to power a 6 pin of if it's intended to make a daisy chain out of adaptors
>>

if you are going to use 2 gpu's or so just buy a PSU that has two 6 pin power cables

any PSU over 700 watts should have 2 of them at least

I just got a Macbook Pro, completely new to it. Can I really not save an image from Safari in a specific album in Photos? It either gives me the option to save it in a much larger folder like documents, applications, etc. or to add it to Photos. That means I have to go to Photos and add it to the specific album myself. There's got to be a workaround, right?

The same thing goes for My Photo Stream. If I've transferred pictures from my iPhone to the Mac through Photo Stream, do I have to move the Photo Stream pictures to another album to save them? Because if I delete them from my phone then I lose them on the Mac (which I don't want).

6-pin is essentially just 2 12V's and 2 grounds to keep the amperage in those lines at a reasonable level, molex (1 12V and 2 grounds and a 5v) times two could in theory be combined to form a 6-pin, but and this is quite big: your psu may not be expecting that much draw from those molex lines, could just poop out and trip over-current protections, or just can't deliver that much power through those lines especially if the other lines are taxed. Just get a PSU that has the connections you need, less hassle and less risk of you burning your house down or damaging your other components

hi

anyone up for some tech support? hehe just kidding, kind of..

recently ive been having an issue, i ve always keep my pc on all the time, is an entry level server, so i dont worry, lately, i find my monitors shut down( like its supposed to) but them i try to wake them up but the display wont return(the display is the only thing that sleeps, disks and everything are always on), even after a hard reset, the display wont come, not even the bios display

what i did has disconnect my gpu, disconnected the pc, and restarted with my integrated graphics, everyhing works fine.

then i reconnected my gpu, and it works again, that for like 2 days, until the whole situation repeats itself

what do you thing? is my gpu dying? is my PCI socket damaged?

what i am doing now, is retrying the card in another pci slot in the same pc, if this happens again, then ill know my slots are fine

should i oven my gpu then? hahah

context

gpu is cheap $100 gt740, so i would not be surprised if it is dying

also, each time this happens, the gpu losses the display settings, and i have to reconfigure, could this point out to a bad gpu?

what do you thing?

my PC was running on integrated when my 3770 went to shit, i tried reflowing the GPU, and it was still dead, i've given up on fixing the GPU and it is now out of my computer.

my question being, my integrated graphics stopped working after i had put my GPU back in to see if the reflow worked, the PC runs fine, but it simply does not output, stopping me from being able to do any sort of interfacing with the PC

Any Guesses?

Can someone suggest a simple website to spider-crawl. A nice modern website but no need for hundreds of links and sub-links. The whole site should be no more than 100MB maximum. Give me a website.

Also, why don't people on /g/ who are annoyed with companies like Firefox make videos explaining to the mass public why they don't like them? Why do they whine here but never do anything about it?

How does a SOCKS5 proxy actually work ?
Is all browser traffic, when using the proxy, actually going through the proxy server like webserver -> proxy -> client or just stuff like DNS lookups ?

I want to use my VPS to get around my ISP's mediocre routing internationally when browsing the internet. So since I have great connectivity to my VPS I figured I'd do something about that.

But is it enough to use a SOCKS5 proxy for just my browser through an SSH tunnel for this, or do I need to set up a VPN ?

I'm using Ubuntu and I have got a fuck ton of stuff saved so I got an I/O error flash up saying no space left on device when downloading something. Obviously I then stopped the torrent and removed what was downloaded so far, and deleted about 10gb of other stuff I no longer need, but the error just keeps flashing over and over again, referencing the thing I was torrenting and saying no space left on device. Is something really messed up here or is it just the error message repeating itself and there's some way to force it to stop?

Well fuck just as I finished typing this it stopped. Would still like to know if this should worry me though as it flashed for several minutes after I'd made room deleting stuff.

If it supports Red Hat, it supports Fedora. Fedora is RPM-based as well, so you just grab the .rpm package and install it.
>>
>>56294244
Might just be the filesystem not reporting correctly to the torrent client.
It is very common to write data to memory and then syncing it to disk. Then the sync operation would lag behind if the disk gets full.
Deleting stuff would just allow for continuation of writing, but the disk could still be filled with reserved data.
Or it could be your torrent client that bitched over nothing.

So, I slapped an SSD into my laptop and for some reason, the time it takes to wake from hibernation is longer than the time it takes to start from a cold boot or wake from sleep. Is there a reason for that?
Everything else is nice and snappy (as it should be on an SSD), but just when it's waking from hibernation, it takes forever.

Because hibernate stores the entire memory file to disk, and to wake up it has to read it all, whereas cold boot just needs to load required system files.

>>
>>56294711

Hibernation should obviously take longer to load then a cold boot, if you don't understand why then you don't understand how hibernation works.

You are storing your ram on your disk then shutting off power to the system. The objective of hibernation is you can save energy while not losing work in progress.

When you come out of hibernation you have to transfer stored memory off the disk back to ram this includes all your running programs and everything running in the background

So the answer is yes it should take this long.

If you want to quickly return to your desktop then just use Sleep.. since that's what sleep is designed to do.

Did I do good, /g/? CPU performs about as well as a desktop 4690k and the GPU performs around a GTX 750ti.

For $500 I really can't complain. A 6700hq + 970m laptop is the only real logical step up but that's $1200 brand new.
>>
>>56295139
That's what you think. But no matter how well you compare them, mobile GPUs will NEVER perform anything like desktop ones. They are MUCH lower power.
>>
>>56295170
I lied anyway, performs a bit better than a 960m. The important thing is it hits 60 frames max setting 1080p in all the games I plan on using it for. I'm comparing by real world benchmarks and it holds its own pretty well.
>>

not bad, but I honestly would recommend buying w series thinkpads or dell precisions if you are in need of discrete gpu on a laptop

i recently sold my gaming laptop and bought two thinkpads (t430) because the components were the same minus the dedicated gpu

the reason i would recommend business laptops over what you just got is because if something goes wrong it is much more diifficult to fix yourself as (to my knowledge) taking it apart is not done as easily

please don't take that the wrong way though - by no means am i trying to piss on your parade. enjoy your purchase, i loved my gaming laptop while i had it and it was definitely worth the money, but just recognize that when you upgrade in the future any number of years from now you take serviceability into consideration. this is coming from a guy who paid $150 to get his republic of gamers laptop fixed when something went wrong with it. little did i know i could have bought a thinkpad with that money.

Depends on how light that particular AV is, what features you turn on and how much spare resources your system has. There a lot of reviews out there comparing their impact, and some are quite light.

Depends. Sometimes you can get unlucky. Also I'd say there's no such thing as "common" sense when talking about computers. You have to know what not to do. In general don't pirate software, use an adblocker, and consider a filtering DNS like norton. Don't download things from shady places and try to virustotal the things you do download. It doesn't hurt to run your user account with limited permissions.

So, I posted awhile back saying that arch can't connect to my uni's wifi because of enterprise shit. No help was recieved for this, so I went to the IT dept, and they said they can't give me the certs or whatever so I can set up a wpa2-enterprise connection "because of security reasons". A bunch of people online said wicd should help, so I installed it, it didn't help, and uninstalled it, now networkmanager doesn't work either. Wifi-menu just flat out says it refuses to connect. Apparently ubuntu works, though. Am I screwed? Can I fix networkmanager and enterprise connections on arch, is there a better distro, or should I just use noobuntu?

Installed Windows 10 on my HP Stream 7, regretted this decision and I'm now trying to install Windows 8.1.

I tried mounting an .iso but that encountered an error. Tried booting from a USB/MicroSD and it won't let me. Next thing I'm going to do is create a new partition, install Windows 8.1 somehow on it, then delete the Windows 10 partition from 8.1. Is this a feasible route? If not, what should I do?

/k/ here,
does anybody here have any experience breaking open passworded files.
I've got some locked rar files that the original guy who uploaded them on the russian internet was selling the key to open it but then abandoned them and can no longer be contacted. The password is known for sure to contain mostly russian characters, the rar version is unknown however. the files contain scans of blueprints for the one of the 1891 infantry rifle variant.

the files were found here as well as previews of whats inside:

Unfamiliar with vehicle audio but bear with me it you will.

I connect my phone via 3.5mm to my car's audio system and at full phone volume I still have to turn the car audio to 60-75% when the radio is "loud" at 15%. Eventually the interface panel gets hotter and there's a whine noise in the audio; this persists so long as the 3.5mm jack is plugged in to the car.
1) is the heat something I should fix?
2) if the heat isn't the problem, what would I need to get rid of the noise? An add-on or a repair?
3) should I get some kind of portable amplifier so I don't have to crank all the audio or is that no big deal?
