I want to connect my laptop to a monitor and use said monitor as my primary screen.

If my laptops resolution is 1600x900, and the monitor in question is say 1920x1080, what happens to the resolution? Will performance be impacted?

I don't understand screens and shit at all.

what connector are you using?
depending on your graphics, even intel graphic can pump 1080p @ 60hz to monitor via hdmi
displayport, same thing
vga, maybe u can get 1080, maybe not. if that's your only connector, you may have an old machine that can't pump it out like that.
there's also the wireless monitor option, google and read up on that and you pc/monitor specifics

I suppose there's no reason you couldn't in theory create a system that worked like a physical implementation of the JVM and ran Java code natively. My guess is there's just not enough motivation to do so. Part of the point of Java is that it's portable and can run wherever, as soon as you start talking about building a specific architecture specifically to run it better it seems like you'd be better off just using a different language.

Then again, I'm hardly an expert, and there could very well be some instructions in the virtual machine that would be very difficult to implement in an actual hardware design.

No.
>>
>>56299904
Also to add to this, it would probably (though again I'm not an expert so could be wrong) be easier to simply write a compiler that compiles the Java code into proper machine code that your CPU can execute directly. Wouldn't be surprised if such a thing already existed, actually.

Though it would likely be a bit buggy since a lot of the more complex Java functions do expect to be executing in the JVM, so you'd have to port that stuff over somehow.

I left my computer on for a few days while I visited a friend, and when I returned the webcam light was on. I don't think that I have a virus, as it's a fresh installation and I use NoScript and Adblock on Firefox. Do you think there was just an opened port from out of date software that was exploited? I built my PC with i5 6500 + EVGA GYX 1060 GAMING + Asus VG248QE 144 Hz monitor. I can get around 110-150 fps on my games, but since they're old (2007-2008), they're not optimized for modern stuff, then the fps may drastically drop from one moment to another based on maps/players' amount ecc.ecc. They're both source games, then I'm wondering what I could expect if I turned V-sync on. Since I'm running them on a 144 Hz monitor, would V-sync limit the fps close to 144 fps or would it limit the fps to around 60 fps?

i had to go alone to my dad's apartment and go through all his stuff after he passed in dec '08.
crying didn't just happen for me either. always thought it would up until then.
i kinda had to force myself to cry about it. (i'm slightly aspie). i miss him still, and i long for a chance to be with him again and i'm sad for the loss when i think about it, (like now... thanks for bringing it up), but i don't fall apart, just not my nature.

if you do happen to break down at work, hopefully someone there already knows about your loss and can comfort you or cover for you, explain to boss. - if you are really concerned it may heppen, and you work in a safety oriented job like driving, heavy equipment, medical, electrical - use a personal day, make your self cry about it so that that part is over and you can move on. also:>>>/adv/

My Netgear WNDRMAC is no longer giving me a wireless connection, it also has a consistent ringing sound. From what I've read the capacitor is done (and I have not the ability to fix such a thing) - would you rec I try and fiddle around w/ it or just get a new one?

Also rec for a new router, I only use WoW / slsk / libgen (I'm not sure if any of this matters) so it can be cheap.

Will upgrading from a G router to an AC router increase the range or just the speed? What about from N to AC?

I have a Netgear WGR614v10 which was a G when I bought it, but at some point there was a firmware upgrade that gave it a 150Mbps mode, so it might be N now.

if upgrading your router, make sure you device(s) have same tech - ac = most bandwidth and range
but don't go cheap - buy in the middle of the price range.

Derp around with a few files in spacemacs, if only to get a taste of what it can do, but don't start with it. It shoves a bajillion config and packages down your throat. Not that that's bad, but you get a feel for your system by installing packages, configuring them and binding the keys yourself. The best course is to start with vanilla and add packages on top of it.

Evil mode is a must

YCM ~ company-mode autocomplete

Lisp indentation is pretty good as far as I saw. Configs are (e)lisp anyway so you bump into it no matter how (un)interested you are in lisp. I also recommend `use-package', it helps with organising your configs (and flychecker requires it). Flycheker support lisp syntax checking out of the box but I guess you'll want to fiddle with it.

If you get the need for vim-like empty-line tildes, chuck this in your config:
(setq-default indicate-empty-lines +1) ;; indicate which lines are empty
(progn
;; define a tilde bitmap face
;; [#b00000000 0
;; #b00000000 0

;; #b11011011 219
;; #b10001110 142
;; #b00000000 0
;; #b00000000] 0
(define-fringe-bitmap 'tilde [0 0 0 113 219 142 0 0] nil nil 'center)
;; set the tilde bitmap
(setcdr (assq 'empty-line fringe-indicator-alist) 'tilde))
;; change the tilde collor to the theme's `comment` color
(set-fringe-bitmap-face 'tilde 'font-lock-comment-face)

I have a computer running that acts as a PLEX server and nothing else.

Sometimes, it crashes. This is fine with me, it's an old computer and it happens. I'm convinced the crashes are hardware based, since it crashes regularly on Windows, Ubuntu and Arch, currently running Ubuntu 15.04.

However, when the computer crashes, it seems to take my router down with it. Every time it crashes, I lose my internet and I can't access my router. If I'm fast, and I plug out the ethernet from the server the internet comes back up immediately. If I take too long in doing this, the router needs to be rebooted, but will immediately crash again unless I reboot the server.

Any idea what could cause this behavior?

Is this normal battery usage when I've literally only been using my phone to check Snapchat and Instagram (like a 2 minute process) twice a day? >>
>>56302721
It has a major impact on system responsiveness. Which is part of why cloud storage is switching to them left and right. Yes, for large consecutively written media files there's very little difference, which is why having an HDD for bulk storage makes sense. But for running your programs and particularly your OS the overall improvement is substantial. Which is why you can go back to a 5+ year old pc, throw an SSD in there and make that baby a snappy, functional machine again. I've done it. Repeatedly. I understand the logic you're employing here, and I have no problem with your personal decision. But for most people SSDs are absolutely something I'd recommend, especially now that they're so much cheaper than the used to be. And I don't think it's fair to go around pushing your personal opinion on people as if it's gospel fact. That's how the "SSD meme" meme got started. It's not the opinion of /g/, it's the opinion of a vocal minority.

I made a thread like a retard about this but I have an RX200 vape mod that I'm rather ignorant of how the TCR works or is meant to be set up?

Running a tank with a .2ohm 316L stainless steel cartridge atm any feedback would be great.
>>
>>56302860
>TCR
Therman Coefficient Resistance
Normally the device has already set up values for Nickel Titanium and SS, but TCR allows you to setup your own, more precise ir maybe if you'e using your own wire, whatever it may be, some people say they could use Nichrome or different sorts of steel.

well right i have it set on the SS mode, but what I'm trying to divine is what temp to set it at and what the wattage in relation to it should be

I get that it measures the current temperature of the coil through its current resistance, but not what i should set it at for my specific setup and what wattage i should set it to in relation to the temperature i want to vape at
>>
>>56302843
nvidia get other companies to make their cards for them. All of them have the same GPU, but they might have different PCBs and coolers.
>>
>>56302894
>what wattage
It gepends on the size of the coil, it's pretty empiric.
If you fire and for the first two seconds it's loud and vapor is too hot - too much
If you fire and it heats up slowly - not enough
>what temperature
i think around 250C slightly more or less is OK.

So if i were to put on an aftermarket cooler, the reference model would be best? Or if i were going watercool it?
>>
>>56302921
so its basically just like tuning a carb, you gotta find the sweet spot the old fashioned way?

As far as TC modes go, if i'm continuously firing will it keep heating until the temp is met and then shut off or will it simply keep the coil at that temp without over heating it? I'm still not sure i understand the point beyond when you are using Ni200 or Titanium since cooking those too hot will give you a nice case of lung cancer

This.
The thing is supposed to keep it smooth.
The perfect TC experience is
1 heats up quicly
2 keeps comfortable temperature
3 prevents dry hits
>Im still not sure i understand the point beyond when you are using Ni200 or Titanium
They have massive TCR compared to SS
Two years ago the first TC Mods weren't sensitive enough to measure resistance change in SS they were using Nickel simply because it has very high temperature coefficient. With time they grew more precise and using SS became possible.
Some people are trying to use nichrome but it's TCR is too low and results suck.
Kanthal will likely never fly ON TC because it's TCR is near zero.

why cant linux into vsync with multiple monitors with differing refresh rates? (60 and 120)

using nvidia drivers atm and no matter what I try in nvidia-settings or compton, it draws things like crap, when vsync is set in either.

The mouse is still fluid like 120hz, but everything else like just simply dragging a window around is clearly not 120. Looks even worse than 60 partially desu.

>>56303844

Yes, your IP is probably dynamic, because it's not worth it to give their average user a static one. It's like a premium feature. But there's no guarantee they'll change your IP at any given interval, or even at all. Your old router might not have the correct login for your ISP, but there's a good chance it wouldn't matter anyway. You can try calling them up and asking them to change it, or you can just accept your ban.

A shipping company mishandled my old (2011) computer and broke the case, the motherboard and the graphics card.

My old setup was:

>CPU: i5 2500 3.3Ghz Box Socket 1155.
MB: Asus P8H67-M B3.
RAM: 4GB.
GPU: Asus GeForce GTS 450 1GB GDDR5.
>POW SRC: Thermaltake Litepower 600W.

(in greentext the components I intend to keep)

My problem is that I would like to get 16GB of RAM in the new setup and a GTX 750 Ti or a Nitro RX 460, both with 4GB of VRAM; and also get a motherboard with USB 3.0 capabilities. However, if I want to keep the processor with a 1155 socket (2nd gen), I will have to use an outdated MB without USB 3.0 and won't let me get to 16GB RAM.

Is it worth it to invest in a newer MB and a processor with a similar speed but with a 1150 socket?

This is the setup I was thinking about:

CPU: i5 4460 3.2Ghz socket 1150.
MB: Gigabyte H81M-S2H.
RAM: 16GB.
GPU: Asus STRIX GTX 750 Ti 4GB GDDR5 /or/ Sapphire Radeon NITRO RX 460 4GB GDDR5.
>POW SRC: Thermaltake Litepower 600W.

Is this a good idea?

I will use the PC for intensive graphics work in the Adobe Suite / 3D modeling and some gaming. I use 3 HD monitors.

I have partially downloaded a moderately large torrent of about 300 episodes of a TV show (~50 gb). I have 32gb of that data, with some seasons 100% complete, although I don't know which ones.

Since that time, my boot HDD died, along with my torrent client's cache/data (deluge). The actual video files were on a different drive, and predictably, many of them still play. On top of this, I got the torrent from KAT, which is now dead, so I can't just get the magnet link and scan+resume it with a newly installed torrent client.

Is there anything I can do, at least to discover which episodes are properly filled with data, and not just allocated space? Just an idea, but maybe a feature of python or bash that I can loop through files in each sub-directory? I use "full allocation" option in deluge. My only other idea is to open up 300 files manually and seeking through each one, there must be a faster way.

>1 Is it difficult to figure out the cabling from the motherboard and power supply to each part?
no. it's pretty much idiot-proof, you can't put a wrong cable somewhere. there are dozens of good tutorials on youtube if you aren't confident. I suggest watching a bunch of them while waiting for your parts to arrive, or even before.
>2 Also what happens the first time you turn it on?
the system boots into UEFI/BIOS, you choose a media to boot from. On first boot, this is installation media, so typically a usb drive or an optical drive.
>3 Is the BIOS part of the motherboard?
yes
>4 Do you need to change anything there?
the boot order. this describes the list of priorities that your bios will attempt to boot from. this is easy, even easier now that all bios have mouse support and high resolutions. the manual that comes with the motherboard will explain it if you can't find the option, but it really shouldn't be a problem.
>5 Do you just install the OS straight away?
after the above, yes
>6 Can it be done by a USB drive if I don't have an optical drive?
on every modern motherboard, yes. it's much faster this way, and even more so if you have a usb 3 drive
>7 Should I get an optical drive, maybe a bluray to watch some movies?
that's up to you. there are better options these days to watch video content, but an internal drive is not a big investment.

My grandma died, and it was very similar to your stuff; I had it in my head if anyone gave me shit about anything I could counter with "my grandma just fucking died", but if you're planning an emotional outburst then it's not really legit, so there's that. She had Dementia for the last year, so her death was kinda more "formal" in the sense that she was already gone for a while so I always just thought the Dementia obscured her death. Seeing my grandpa break down when he saw her body at the funeral home hit pretty hard, but my dad's eulogy had me properly going. Humans are weird, and movies don't even come close to the actual truth.
>>
>>56305282
if you can get ahold of the .torrent file you can verify what's done
the .torrent file contains hashed of every block, and any torrent client will be capable of scanning the data to verify block integrity
if you can give an example folder/filename, as well as the file count and total size, someone might be able to find the .torrent file

meme? sorta. you can buy one of the wrist straps if you're paranoid, but it's not mandatory. I find that touching the metal shield every couple of minutes on my house's heater is enough.

if you're still checking the thread, like a lot of western countries it's illegal unless you have them for professional reasons

but really, in what scenario do you expect to be searched by the police? you'd have to be doing something illegal to begin with or the police will need a good reason to suspect you're doing something illegal, like a burglary in the area and you match the suspect, otherwise you can refuse a search, in which case they'd never know you were carrying the lockpicks

but in any other case, the police will likely take a common sense approach and not arrest you on the spot but may confiscate them or give you a verbal/written citation or something, it's a lot like < 3 inch knives (something else you edc fags tend to carry about), technically illegal but if you have a good reason to be carrying them nobody is really going to care unless you're doing something illegal

I'm having a weird experience /g/.

Since people have said that Cortana can't be easily disabled after the anniversary update to W10, I decided to Google how to do it. In the first page I found, some symptoms of having Cortana enabled were listed, I noticed that I was suffering none of those. It then pointed me to some place in the registry, so obviously I went and opened my registry, and when I was just about to navigate to the right place (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search) I found that I was already somewhere very similar (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search) and that the place that I was supposed to navigate to was actually no where to be found.

Does this indicate that I've disabled Cortana already and simply don't remember doing it? Or is she still alive?

Also, a question from a friend of mine who hasn't touched W10 in like 8 months (he's wisely dropped it for Linux). "Why can't you just delete the [Cortana] program outright? Just write some zeros into the executable, or if Windows 10 keeps on repairing it with every update, can't you just make a batch file and put it in startup to delete it (or you can even setup a service to run as admin)?".

Can anyone answer that?

>What do I do to be static proof to build this if the place you are has a non removable carpet?

if you give a shit, get a wrist strap that plugs into mains earth connection (the "cordless" ones are pure snakeoil) and do the work on an esd mat that also connects to earth ground

if you give less of a shit, do not wear any synthetic material such as nylon for clothing and try to stick to pure cotton, don't wear socks as static charge will slowly dissipate when barefoot on carpet, and occasionally touch some unpainted metal, if it's connected to ground that's preferable but if not available an unpainted part of the case or a cpu heatsink will do the job

if you don't give a shit, don't take any precautions, the risk for static discharge to damage components on densely populated boards like motherboards is extremely slim

that's not how VSYNC works.

it doesnt limit your frames, it locks it to the monitor's refresh-rate.
and if the FPS drops below the refresh rate (without gsync or freesync) it will cut your frames in half and you will get an even worse experience.

Blue oleds need the most power, reds the least. So you could enable the standard android night color filter (whatever it's called) and cut out the blue. Do you have any info from the crash dump or the kernel panic? That will tell you where the error is occurring. Follow these directions for Windows https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff542953(v=vs.85).aspx. For the kernel panic, you'll need a monitor connected to the server to see what the issue is. It won't tell you over SSH when it panics.

As for the router, I'm not entirely sure. It sounds like the PLEX server is flooding the interface and causing the router to become bogged down dealing with its requests, though I can't say for certain what the issue is without more information.

I assume that you're getting the GTX950 for the CUDA cores. NGL, unless you're going to do 3D rendering and/or compositing, that feels a little over kill. The integrated GPU with the i5-6500 should be more than enough to handle 1080p video editing. Dependent on what you are doing, your RAM could be a little bit of a bottleneck.
>>
>>56302810
>>56302846
then you should just bite the bullet and get an i7 and a good GPU, not some old budget card. you're gonna save so much time rendering. and you might get a big boost because of some new feature.

there's alternatives for everything. do your own research and check case reviews on youtube or other hardware review sites. for HDDs it's WD blue, Toshiba and Hitachi are the best. Seagate used to be bad but got better. Dont get anything under 2TB because the price per GB will be higher.

SSD question

Should I go for 120 GB or 256 GB?

Soon there will be discount in my local store in Europoor. 120 GB version for about 30 bucks and 256 GB for 55 bucks. Both are from ADATA, TLC.

What I'm going to have on it? Windows 10 + some programs. I play games like Witcher, CSGO etc.

What do you keep on your SSD and how much free space do you have?

Once it's working again don't change a bunch of settings incorrectly in the(now default) BIOS causing it to fail to boot again.

Pull out a few sticks of RAM, stare at them blankly then put them back in, usually works.
