Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

How are the Fedora spins? I'm looking to try a bunch of different DEs in VM to see which one I prefer, and Fedora's website has a bunch of variants here:

https://spins.fedoraproject.org/en/

I'm pretty certain I don't want to use KDE, but I'm curious about LXDE, MATE, and xfce on Fedora. I tried xfce on Debian and I'm pretty sure I don't want to use Debian full time, but I've seen some very nice xfce desktop configurations so I wouldn't be opposed using that as my DE.

You can test it before you install.
And by test it, I don't mean look at the desktop and decide if it's pretty.
See if all your hardware works, if you can find software you need in the repos, etc.

I could use a bit of help.

I have 2 hard drives. On one I have Windows and OpenSUSE installed, and I just installed Kubuntu on my second drive because I can't into SUSE. My plan was to install Kubuntu on my second drive, wipe my first drive, and do a fresh Windows install on it, so that instead of having separate partitions for my OSes, I'd just have one OS on each drive.

My problem though is that Kubuntu only boots when I choose to boot from the first drive, and nothing happens when I choose the second. And I can no longer boot into Windows at all. My first thought was that I fucked up and installed Kubuntu to my first drive, but it is indeed installed on my second drive, it just boots from the first drive for some reason. How do I get it to boot from the second drive and have Windows boot from the first?

First git clone the thing, then cd there, then

Then nano config.h and change the stuff you want and then package and install it.

Only half an answer but you could consider streaming with mpd which is generally quite robust
>>
>>56270082
An idea:

ffmpeg ... 2>&1 | grep -q Warning && pkill ffmpeg

- 2>&1 redirects stderr to stout
- grep -q returns silently true or false

You can also use : as shortcut for [ 1 ].

Hope it helps.

Running Ubuntu 16.04.
I need to connect to eduroam at my uni.
In order to do this I need to install wpa_supplicant.
I already have wpa_supplicant, but I'm unsure wether or not it's working.
When I type wpa_supplicant in the terminal, it gives me a list of arguments, and when I do wpa_supplicant -B it says the daemon initialized successfully.
However when I try to use wpa_cli or wpa_gui, none of these can connect to wpa_supplicant.
There is also an eduroam installer/configurer which I can download and then run as a .sh script from the eduroam website.
This is supposed to configure the network manager to work so that I can connect to eduroam at an accesspoint.

However when I try to run this it says the configuration failed. It generates a file, but this file only contain things like username, password, connection information etc and doesn't really help me because I have tried many times to connect to the wifi at my uni with the options set as in that file.

My wifi at home is working fine btw.
>>
>>56271823
why can't you use your default network manager?
I'm using the one that's default on LXDE, whichever that is and it werks. So does GNOME's.

You need to connect three times in a row until it works.
From then on you should be fine.

Something just happened, so I may not still have a problem.
The configuration . sh script I downloaded from their webpage executed successfully for the first time. So the issue may have resolved itself magically (I've been trying probably 10 times).

Is there a way I could test wether I still have a problem without physically going to an accesspoint at my uni?

I still can't connect to wpa_supplicant with wpa_gui or wpa_cli but I don't know if this is actually a problem.

Ubuntu 16.04 on thinkpad t450.
Did an update earlier today, rebooted to successfully install the updates and everything went fine.
Tried to turn my PC on about half an hour later; booted to the login screen, entered my password and the system was just stuck showing the wallpaper, but not the taskbar, launcher or my iconpack. Could only move my cursor.
Went into a terminal shut the system down. Turned it on again, and this time when I entered my password, the system paused for a second before continually brining up the login screen ad infinitum.

A bit later I turned my system on again, and now everything went completely fine.

I think there might have been/be a problem with compiz, or some intel drivers.
What should I do to troubleshoot and fix this issue, so that it doesn't happen the next time I try to start my system?
>>

I've been running arch for like a year now. I've never actually like, gone through and read a lot of the wiki but after using it for a while I've learned what I want this machine to do and what I don't want it to do. I just bought "Programming Principles and Practice Using C++ 2nd Edition" and while I'm waiting on it to come in the mail I'm going to use this time to thoroughly read the Arch wiki, read the fucking manual, and select the packages I want to use very carefully.

I'm a giant scrub when it comes to understanding the basic config files for my installation and I didn't do much better than follow written steps for my install without knowing what some of the steps even did. This time I'm going to understand every step and how to make use of my computer the way I want to use it.

I'm going to become a not retarded user.

Sometimes packages cannot be removed by themselves because other packages need them. This is hard coded in arch and all binary distros, you can have more control over this process in gentoo so you don't need all dependencies based on every possible feature a program might have. I think you can do this with arch though as well.

Can someone explain Apt-Pinning (yes I read all documentation on it)?
When I set my onofficial deb-multimedia repo's priority to -1, I can't install shit from it.
If I set it to 1, Apt pulls packages I install from there even if a (older) version exists in the main repos.

Isn't this exactly what Apt-Pinning is supposed to prevent?

I'm on the THIRD reinstall of Fedora (KDE spin) today after trying multiple different guides to install the nvidia graphics drivers I need (otherwise I get graphical glitches) - each time I end up with boot to command line (cannot actually enter anything) or something else goes wrong during boot.

I'm coming from Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu (and actually using them) where they all had an application to find and install the drivers I needed.

Why did they make this so hard to do on Fedora? Is it worth me moving up to Fedora if everything that requires proprietary drivers/software is going to be this difficult?

Also given that Fedora gets frequent updates I'm worried that even if I got my drivers working, the next large update would break everything again.

I thought I was ready...

Install Stable.

If you notice that you need a certain package in a newer version, and it isn't available through backports, pull it from a third party repo (there's one for basically every software that needs to be up-to-date to not suck).

If you feel like installing more than a few packages that way, migrate your system to Testing (it's a pretty painless process).

If this sounds too complicated for you, and you want a cutting edge distro, install Sid right away. Or don't use Debian.

That's a question I can't answer cause I never had problems with Arch.
If you rely on proprietary drivers that are upgraded like once a year, and/or don't read the relevant upgrade info your distro provides, and/or simply hit enter no matter what your package manager says it's about to do, then yes, stay away from Sid.

Wrong. Search for "debian non-free iso" to very easily find the iso which comes with non-free drivers, and access to non-free/contrib repositories by default.

Link: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/
(The top-most one is netinstall, and within are methods of download. bt is bittorrent, iso is http download, etc)

AND if you're unlucky and your drivers aren't included, the installer kindly gives you the names of the packages that you need. So just search the name it gives in debian's package search, download the .deb files, put them on the root of a flash drive, and then the installer should detect & use them automatically. You only have to do this once per laptop model, as long as you save the relevant files. But most of the time you don't have to, because the major ones are already included in the non-free iso.

I just killed the script adding them; it had gotten ~15K through.

I'm removing them now, and going to go with a smaller set.

Needs shopt -s extglob to be set.

Disconnect as fast as possible. Why? Because you can sniff and spoof everything that isn't encrypted - and so can everyone else inside an unknown network. That's why people should be careful with using random hotspots, by the way.

Something to start:

update your package list:
sudo apt-get update

search in your package list for a program:
apt-cache search vrms

install a package:
sudo apt-get install gentoo

remove a package:
sudo apt-get remove gentoo

Alternativly you can use good old "synaptic" (you know now how to install it).
>>
>>56277863
Besides that you are really unlikely to actually need that many rules, load them from a file instead of adding them one-by-one

Can I just put that in .bashrc?
>>
>>56277962
Yes. You may also want to add:
shopt -s globstar
so you can glob recursivly (like zsh) via **
ls **/*.jpg

Anyone here tried to install Dotnet or Powershell on Arch? When I try installing them, the build() phase spawns several Clang processes that eat 100% of my CPU for several minutes until it stops and gives an error about running out of space on device.

Thanks.

Well, what could that possibly mean?

Well gosh darn, are the compiled object files are supposed to take 44GB of space?

is wayland ready yet? is there anything I'd have issues with if I changed to it?

my actual question is how to fix tearing while using an nvidia gpu + non-free drivers, but I think I heard wayland fixes tearing

and if I have to use the free drivers to avoid tearing, do they perform well in video games yet? ;-;
>>
>>56278191

Wayland is "ready". You want to ask about Wayland compositors and if they are "ready".
>>
>>56278217
ah yes, compositors. I should mention right now that there is literally nothing you can do with compton to fix the tearing of an nvidia setup

so then moving on, are any of the wayland compositors actually any good? also can I even use wayland with nvidia? I think I heard only amd supported it so far

I want to use linux from now on (I use windows). I've tried ubuntu before on my laptop but never used it extensively. I want to use linux as my main OS now and learn more about it.

I have a few stupid questions:
1- From my understanding GUI is just like the interface that your distro uses? So I'm assuming distros come with a GUI but you can change that GUI yourself after if you want?

2- What is vim/emacs etc? Why does everyone say they use emacs or whatever? Is it just a text editor that people write their code in? Like notepadd++ (lol)? I want to learn how to use these 2 since everyone who talks about linux mentions these

3- what are windows managers?

4- is my understanding correct: different distros come with different preloaded GUIs, windows managers, but you can customize both of those if you like

5- for a total newbie like me who wants to use linux as his main OS, what do you recommend me doing/learning so that I'm not just an idiot who has linux and opens google chrome. I want to actually some stuff. Like should I need to learn how to use the terminal well? how to compile my code without IDE?

6- why is bash called a terminal shell?

Anyways I know most of this can be googled, but thought you guys could help me out a bit. I'll install it tonight on my desktop and start messing around.

According to these[0][1] it works and it doesn't.

>>
>>56278260
1. GUI is a graphical user interface (as opposed to CLI, the command line). You're referring to a DE (desktop environment). You can change them, but it's easier if you install a distro that comes with one you like right away.

2. Text editors. enter vimtutor in the command line to start with vim.

3. The programs that let you open, close and resize your windows.

4. Yes.

5. You don't have to learn to use the terminal on a distro like Ubuntu. But you'll figure it out, and it's worth it. I've run Linux for several years, and I haven't compiled any code yet.

6. Bash is a terminal shell. Zsh is another one, and there are many others. Not that important, until you run into things you'd like to do that bash can't.

Have fun, and think before you sudo!
>>
>>56278260
I'm taking #6:

tl;dr on your desktop, the window that people call "terminal" is an emulator that emulates a real terminal (the stuff you get when you don't have a desktop). the terminal is only the interface, to actually process commands, you need a shell.

terminal: allows you see the shell
shell: allows you to process commands

you can install just about any distro to a USB flash drive, just as you would to an internal drive

You should have overwritten your entire drive (including the file system) with
dd if=[Debian Iso File] of=/dev/sdX bs=1M

And maybe enable booting from external drives in your BIOS.
