I'd go for the Z3. Better battery life, rom support, and waterproof and such. Also, I've heard things about the G3, like bad battery life.

hey, any good options for a budget smartphone?
want to buy my dad his first smartphone.
nothing fancy required, i want something cheap.
he doesnt have facebook, probably wont be youtubing much, maybe just reading the news, sending some emails and stuff.
the important thing would be solid battery life and a small screen (nothing bigger than 4.5").
thanks for any input.

Hello /g/ I'm a total noob when it comes to smartphones
I have the following device:

Model Number : Alcatel One Touch 5020T
Firmware version: 4.1.1
Kernel Version 3.4.0
Build Number: Jelly Bean

My installation came with a lot of unwanted softwares so I want to root and maybe change the rom

The problem is I really don't know what I'm doing and I already bricked a phone before so I have some question before committing.

My first question is:
What is the tool I should use to root my Alcatel?(I use a Linux operating system)
Also I heard there's a tool for "lazy" people but it doesn't grant you full root access? What does it mean?

Second question is:
Is there a rom with only a launcher and play store installed?
I heard of something called Prism Barebone, is it any good?

Third question is : What's so good about Cyanogen?

There's no reason to assume that Marlin or Sailfish will be anything less than the best phones in their respect price range of the year. Just like the 6p last year. Marlin will learn from the mistake of discarding ois, ditch the useless front firing speakers, and be an all around superior performer. Design will be subjectively more attractive (looking more like an iPhone, though I think the 6p is beautiful) but definitely more durable unlike Huwaei's bendy disgrace. So just hang tight. Grab a 5X if you need something in the mean time.

Broke the glass on my trusty old S3. Now I'm considering the LG G5, because it has a removable battery and thats a must for me - I'm not gonna ditch a perfectly functioning device after 2-3 years just because battery is at 60% of original capacity and cannot be replaced. I want to get like 5 years out of a flagship phone, unless I accidentally break it like the S3.

Apparently the LG G5 sells like shit, because in my country its the cheapest snapdragon 820 phone and is like $100 cheaper than the S7 and the OP3 (which is overpriced here). I guess that's because the S7 is a lot nicer looking and the shilling has been immense for this phone. Idon't mind the looks, because I will put it in a case anyway.

Are there any dealbreakers I should know about regarding the G5?
>>
>>56257658
>Are there any dealbreakers I should know about regarding the G5?
Both the G3, G4 and V10 have bootloop issues and you have to RMA the device.
>>

>>56257673
The phones has been out for over 6 months and I found only few reddit and xda posts about this. I guess its just a small percentage of defective units, not a general problem.

>>56257724
Yeah you can get the battery replaced, but the costs can go as high as $100 unless you do it yourself. After 3 years the device itself will have a value of like $150.

I've also heard about the shit build quality around the bottom removable part, but that should be irrelevant if I put the phone in a case.
>>
Anyone have Project Fi? How is it? Was thinking of using it.
>>
>>56256011
I'm holding one right now. Just got it yesterday.

cons
-Gets really hot, like worrisomely so, form moderately intense tasks like OS updates
-Speaker (ear and loud) quality is rough. Tinny/metallic. Passable for conversations, bad for music
-many reports of battery problems with nougat
-yellowish screen on some units (mine incl)
-No SD card slot
-image stabilisation on videos you take sucks. Shakey cam.

Everything else is good/great tier. 120 fps video is tons of fun, better than moto's implementation. Would have been disappointed at launch price, but for $200 it's a fucking steal.

Try Kingroot to root it, should be fairly straight forward, no PC required

ROMs differ per phone, usually CyanogenMod is fairly barebones, and you can remove unwanted apps once you have rooted it
CyanogenMod is basically just plain Android with some extra features (like theming, extra settings). CyanogenMod is generally considered to be the go-to ROM as it has the biggest community and therefor generally the most stable, if you don't know or care too much about ROMs, go with CM.

>It’s evident that OnePlus didn’t learn from the issues I demonstrated with the OnePlus 2’s display. It was a serious regression from the OnePlus One, and with the OnePlus 3 they’ve somehow found a way to regress even further.

There’s basically no use case where you use a phone without looking at the screen, and right from the very first moment I turned on the OnePlus 3 I could tell that the colors are completely wrong. Will Apple ever let iPhone users to install apps outside the App Store and give as a file explorer? I'm fucking sick of using a lockdown OS. Can't go to android cause muh encryption and their phones only last 2 years. Why don't they give as freedom to use our phone as we like?

What's up /spg/? Question for you. I have a Motorola Moto X Pure (style for you Euro peeps). 21MP camera. Takes decent pictures and can record 4K.

I have my old Note 3 I no longer use sitting around as well. 13MP camera, only goes up to 1080p recording if I'm not mistaken.
So one phone blatantly has a better camera right? Apparently not. It appears my Note 3 is able to take better pictures than my Moto X at times. It seems like the Note 3 has a better stabilizer than the Moto X and photos come out with less noise/pixelation.

Is this down to the software? I mean it has to be the software running the camera that is Moto X's weak spot. Is there a fix for this? I.e. a 3rd party camera app?

Don't get me wrong. Both phones take good pictures, but side by side of the same tree/flower the Note 3 really makes everything pop where as the Moto X pure seems a bit washed out in comparison. Not to mention less camera options overall.

Thanks! Pic unrelated.

That pretty much tells the story. Samsung has a lot invested in camera software algorithms that are also performing voodoo that Moto simply hasn't invested in, probably for obvious business reasons.

21mehpixels are not better than 13 good megapixels. That's why the MP wars stepped back from 21MP to 16 and even 12MP. The physical factor to be on the lookout for is a larger sensor with an increased pixel size and that the sensor isn't some offbrand like Omnivision. OIS should always be preferred as well.
>>
CM is better than regular android but the default apps are still pretty fucking shit (calendar REQUIRES an account to work, and will automatically use the mail account from the default mail app if available, there's no way NOT to have contacts see the mail client's imported contacts (and the exchange service isn't the cause, it's actually the mail app itself), etc, so it's really like base android with a different vendor in that respect, which partially defeats the point I think. Is my best bet still simply to circumvent those apps (and if so, what's the best way to do so)), or is there a more appropriate rom around?
>>
>>56264939
The only good default app of CM is the music player, who the fuck uses the stock apps anymore?

Anyway, PowerAmp or default for music, MX Player Pro for videos, K-9 for email, Whatsapp and Textra for instant/messaging, Piktures or LeafPic for images, aCalendar for guess what, Root Explorer for a file explorer and if you dont like the default UI then use Nova Launcher Prime to replace it, UCCW for custom widgets, KLWP for your wallpaper, maybe a custom font, Xposed for modules and Gravity Box for advanced ricing, there are several guides on /w/ (your phone needs at least a quadcore and 1 GB of ram to handle heavy ricing without lag though).

Use opengapps or microG for your custom rom instead of donwloading them from those filthy jews, DONT USE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT OR EVEN OPEN THE PLAY STORE, get everything from cracked apk sites and F-Droid, if you seriously consider normalfag apps like snapfag, memebook and youtube essential then feel free to fuck off, i dont see why synchronizing your phone calendar with the one from your email account is bad.

Go for the HTC 10, the Note 7 was underwhelming as all fuck in every single aspect sans screen quality (much better than the S7E but it ultimately doesnt matter when it gets scratched with EVERYTHING), the HTC 10 has similar specs, can be rooted, its bootloader can be unlocked because HTC is based as fuck and has a much better battery, this info doesnt seem relevant at first, but keep in mind that the Note series of phones were known for being monsters compared to the flagships released in the same year, both the iris scanner and edge screen are a shitty gimmick, the battery is much worse than the Note 5 and the stylus doesnt make it worth it, if only it had 128 gb internal and at least 6 gb of ram (8 would have been ideal) it would have been a worthy successor to the Note 4, imo the best samsung phone so far, the Note 7 is way overpriced for what it offers, id rather buy an iphone, im not joking.

Motorola s best phones are their budget ones, these guys cant into flagships.

Thanks for the in-depth reply. I was eyeing the Note 4 because I noticed it has a removable battery and figured it would be a cheaper option, seeing as it's an older phone. Too bad Verizon fucking shits won't offer it in my upgrade package so it ends up being not far off in price relative to the newer phones I have access to.

On me for not getting in earlier I guess
>>
Is the iphone really the best smartphone out there? It always gets the best reviews but I can't stand how limited the OS is. Are normies really too dumb to care about shit like that? Plus they jew the fuck out of you on storage.

Also, FUCK itunes.
>>
>>56268782
>Is the iphone really the best smartphone out there?
No
>Are normies really too dumb to care about shit like that?
Yes

It depends what you want. I used an iPhone for a while and personally I couldn't stand how limited options were (back then you couldn't even change the keyboard), and how riddled with ads everything was. It was also an older iPhone that had been heavily gimped by updates.

But lots of people enjoy the experience, make your own decisions anon.
>>
Just flashed marshmallow on my note 4

What do now?
>>
>>56268888
Serious question, what do you personally consider the best smartphone out right now?
>>
>>56268964
Personally I would say the S7 provided you could root/unlock the version you needed. It has great battery life, the best camera, good screen, waterproof, SD expansion, nfc etc. I've never used one and there's always something better coming along though.
>>
>>56268463
No problem dude, ive had the Note 4 since it came out (love at first sight i guess) and its amazing, i get a good 6 hours browsing the internet and watching videos and it has 0 lag even though i have nova prime, a custom lockscreen (i will install goodlock once the fingerprint unlock doesnt crash the phone) some widgets and a live wallpaper running at all times, i havent updated to cyanogenmod 13 because ive read the s-pen settings get all fucked up but i guess its battery would last even longer and id get a much smoother experience (my Moto G improved a fuckload after i put CM 12.1 on it), but id rather keep my pen, the phone itself is in mint condition because i bought an expensive (read: a $30 known brand one instead of those flimsy $5 ones you get in online stores) tempered glass screen protector and a black wallet case for it, i have never dropped it either.

I still wouldnt recommend it though, like you said the phone is a bit old and the HTC 10 is a much better choice for that price, both support 128 gb sd cards and have UHD screens, their only differences are amoled vs super lcd, an extra gb of ram for the 10, the Note 4 being bigger and the removable battery of the Note 4.

Other good choices would be the Galaxy S7 Edge (100 extra bucks but the battery lasts longer than just about every other phone in the market, edge screen, great specs, sd slot, overall an excellent flagship, just get the exynos version) and the Redmi Note 3 Pro (way cheaper than the others, metal body, specs on par with 2014 flagships despite its price and manufacturer, custom rom support up the ass, second best battery in the market, sd slot, its only faults are the shitty camera and merely decent screen).

The shape and size of a phone makes a huge difference in usage.

>>56260082
The robin has a good concept, but since the phone has like 0 metal in it's structure it breaks with almost no pressure.

Do any phones other than Xperia have a dedicated camera button?

That's fucking nice. I wish the Zenfone Zoom didn't blow.

Hej folks. Looking for advice in what android to buy around 300-400$. A micro SD reader is almost a must. I had the Sony z3 but had alot of problems with the display breaking. The Galaxy S4 is my favorite phone so far.

>Thinking about getting the Marlin Nexus whenever it comes out off contract

Man you're out of the loop. That's the point of the nexus devices, they're specifically available off contract. Hell, I don't even think you can get them *on* contract.
>>
>>56270119
Isn't the main point of Nexus devices just to showcase the potential of new Android versions?
Serious question here.

Honor 5X has shit stock ROM but CM support is apparently good and even supports the fingerprint sensor. Nice battery.

Nexus 5X has iffy battery life, but ROMs will be amazing and the camera is pretty good.

Moto G4 is more of the same: nothing amazingly good nor astoundingly bad. It won't be fast nor slow, the camera won't be great nor trash, and you will probably be fine with it. Decent battery.
>>
>>56270534
>Honor 5X
If you want the best specs, good battery, but the cons of being a chinkphone
>Nexus 5X
If you want the best software, but the battery is mediocre.
>Moto G4
Decent software, decent hardware. All rounder.

I say go with the Nexus, but I'm a bit of a fanboy.
>>
>>56269832
It runs hot and a bit inefficiently. I have a M9 and it gets warm playing 720p YouTube videos, but it's not terrible.

>>56269421
That's not bad.

>>56268941
Marshmallow didn't add tons of features, but quick settings is more customizable and permissions is good. Just keep using your phone.
>>
If I can get an HTC 10 on a two year contract for cheaper than an unlocked OP3, assuming both have the same monthly fee, should I go for it?

I'm Canadian and I'd be going with Bell.
>>
>>56270636
>Contract
Just no, imho. OP3 is a great phone and you don't need to give into the carrier jew, plus you'll get better software support
>>
>>56270658
I'm pretty new to smartphones in general, what are some of the downsides of going on contract if I've never really switched carriers before?
>>
>>56270674
You'll end up paying more in the long run, are locked in for the next new years, are likely to get preloaded bloatware depending on the carrier, and will get updates a lot later
>>
Do I get S7 edge international or wait for next nexus. Got to get off this iphone 6
>>
>>56270751
>S7
TouchWiz is a laggy piece of shit but the nexus phones aren't known for their amazing hardware. You could flash aosp on the s7 but you miss out on so many features of the phone it probably isn't worth it, so i'd go for the nexus.

Seeing how u know nothing about this topic I would advise you not to try anything risky cause you might brick ur phone again. Your phone is quite rare and theres little to no community around it which means theres no one to make custom ROMs and guides for it.

You should look for at least an average battery life. You dont have to have the best possible battery but it really helps if you use your phone a lot. I had phones with shit life and after i got one with a bigger battery its much easier when i dont have to worry about battery.
