I meant more like "What features I should look for in a phone"

So far I am thinking that I want:

-able to store mp3s and listen to them
-take pictures
-calendar, calculator, alarm clock
-what is app, that everyone keeps telling me that it's the only thing they use to chat
-if it is not terribly expensive I'd like it to have google maps or some sort of maps system with street names.

I don't know if the maps thing is pushing it though, I don't want to spend a fortune.
Any other features you guys would recommend?

Why would it be expensive?
Pretty much every single smartphone today has GPS
And you can use apps like Here Maps to download the for offline use, so you don't even need internet access for the maps.
>>
I wish Sony would unfuck itself. Do they not get most ppeople think their shit looks boring, is overpriced, and doesn't have any compelling features?

Everyone told me waterproof phones were unnecessary, but I thought it was pretty smart on Sony's part.
>>
>>56274236
I don't know how much they go for, so I'll see when I get to the store.

>>56274247
Thanks but I don't want model recommendations, just what to look for in a phone.

>>56274258
Oh, so it's normal to have maps? That's good!

Also, one thing that worries me is that I see that all the new phones now are very slim and big. Doesn't that make them very vulnerable to get broken all the time? I imagine they must bend with minimal pressure, being so slim.

I loved my old Arc S. It's the sole reason I got my xperia z1 when my samsung galaxy s4 slid from my couch and bopped the floor. That was apparently enough to completely fuck the screen. In comparison, I've inadverdently slammed a truck door on the arc s and it barely got scratched. I've always been disappointed in how laggy sony phones seem compared to other brands, though. I really like them, and I would love if it was the sensible buy, but they just seem so fucking slow.
>>
What's /g/'s thoughts on Windows 10 phones? Is the OS on the phone the same as the OS for the desktops? Are these worth $600 with good specs?

>>56274986
>Arc S
Man, that thing was built like a tank. Mine fell out of my pocket why I was riding a bike, slid screen down and nothing happened, whereas my Nexus 5 screen broke when it fell off my bed onto a wooden floor. Gorilla Glass is the worst thing that happened to phones.

I saw that test where the fucking note 7 got scratched at 3 mohs. I've been looking lustily at the note, but I'd like a phone where it doesn't make a big difference if I wait a day or two getting a screen protector.
And where's our Sony flagship built like the Arc S? A Sony flagship that actually performs like a flagship and can be used to beat up people when you put it in a tough case.

Nexus 6P vs Oneplus 3: Does 2015's best phone hold up?
https://youtu.be/zWby_iWSFJI
>>
>One Plus... Reliable After A Year?

I'm down to:
>wait for new Nexus
>buy OP3
>buy 6p when new Nexus drops/cheaper

I tried the OP3 and their customer service for refunding me 100% was great. No worries about that. Question is, do their products last?
I was blown away by the smoothness of the phone but does anyone here have a OP problem that just went to complete shit after a year? If it's software wise, couldn't it be fixed via a ROM? I can root so there's no prob.

As for Nexus, I know their phone's last, regardless if the 5x/6p was an overheating mess, their hardware/software was great, and my Nexus 5 lasted me almost 3 years.

What do I do?
(also, budget for me was $500 CAD which the OP3 satisfied)
>>
>>56276112
If 1440p is a need for you then choose the third option, if not get the Sailfish when it gets released. The OP3 has a shit-tier screen that I wouldn't recommend dealing with for the next 2-3 years.q
>>
Is there a better TV remote app than Peel?
>>
>>56276169
Not OP but similar issue, one of the reasons I'd get OP3 is because of the little things like finger print sensor on front, hardware buttons, and the alert slider. The problem is that I heard OnePlus seem to drop support for devices early and take forever with updates. Not only that but I'm not convinced that the phone will stay smooth over time like the 6P has.
>>
>>56276246
OnePlus Two got 6.0 two months ago.
It's pretty bad.

The OPO and OPX aren't getting 7.0 (the GPU doesn't support Vulkan/OpenGL 3.1)

Oh btw, the OPX is still stuck on Lollipop

if your music collection is big get an htc 10, it has micro sd slot and wont bend even being made out of metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ62ixgzhrI and the camera is top tier.
if your music collection isnt bigger than 40gb get a nexus 6p, this one bends easily, but either way you should put a case on any modern smartphone, camera is also very nice.
or get an iphone 6s/plus those dont bend and have really nice cameras, itunes is a pain in the ass tho.

generally speaking nexus and iphones offer the best experience all around, and every smartphone right now has all the features you listed but the quality varies greatly depending on the price range. if you want expandable storage you'll have to research some more.
avoid samsung at all costs.

Not very hard.

Getting it to still work properly afterwards? Who knows. The camera is likely a module you can unplug and throw out. GPS antenna can be detached, it may still work without the antenna. Microphone might have to be destroyed. On my phone it's incorporated into a larger circuit but you should be able to break it without damaging anything else.

It depends on the phone really. Seriously reconsider the way you are living your life.

I've been looking at buying a used flagship phone, specifically the LG G3 or Nexus 6 for under $150. I'm pretty heavily leaning towards getting the LG G3, but are there any other similar phones to it that is worth the purchase more in the end? It seems like the perfect phone for me and it's around $110 right now on eBay.
>>
>>56283972
G3 becomes laggy as fuck unless you have a custom ROM, and the oversharpening on the screen is very noticeable. I had to deal with it until just getting a 6P
I'd honestly go for the Nexus 6 for a much better OLED screen
>>
Had a redmi note 2, I really liked it but I missed having 4G service. It died completely on me a month ago.

Is there a good phone in the $399 or below with decent specs and a similar screen size but 4G support in the US and better build/ battery life?

I was looking at the One Plus 3 and the Huawei Honor 8 but I'm undecided right now. I wasn't sure if there was something I was missing somewhere else.
>>
>>56283972
keep in mind the G3 just has a snapdragon 801 like the other flagships at its time but was also the first to have to drive a 1440p display. It handles alright, but might be a little too ahead of its time, future 1440p phones (nexus 6 has an 805) handled the transition better

Hey Goys

My note 4 camera broke and I'm looking for a new phone. Preferably one that is a bit smaller

What are some good phones on the more affordable end of the spectrum?
>>
>buy LG G4
>excellent, really outstanding camera
>surprisingly good battery life, despite what people were saying
>the rest is garbage
>dim screen
>heating up just by browsing the internet
>poor UI performance
>unreliable double-tap and knock-code on locked screen, sometimes just not working at all
>tremendous amount of minor software bugs
>suddenly, after few months, the phone decides that from this day on, it will charge absurdly slowly
>enoughofthisshit.jpg
>buy Moto X Pure
>absolutely 0 issues
>actually amazed of how good, polished and reliable it is
>2 months forward
>still no issues at all
The only things that I'd change is the camera software, but kinda got used to it, and also that the screen could be AMOLED to make proper use of Moto Display.
>>
>>56284652
What's the point of gaining performance if there no apps to take advantage of it? I understand wanting to buy iphone if you want a phone for work or with no bloatapps, however.
>>
>>56284813
To be honest, when I first got into Nexus phones I took full advantage of Android. But now I'm pretty much a normie so I feel an iPhone would be a better fit for me.

Aldo, as you said, I want minimal bloat (one of the reasons I've always stuck with Nexus, my one run in with Samsung left a bad taste in my mouth) and just a more consistent uu/ux that requires less tinkering on my part. As much as I feel like a tool for saying this, I want it to just werk. I'm tired of fucking with my phone. My fear though is that I'll drop $700 on this thing only to hate it and go back to my 6p.

I'd be tempted to wait for the next nexus. If you can't go without the camera for half a month, then maybe the axon 7

htc 10?
>>
>>56284377
Redmi Note 3 Pro is just an unofficial name for the Snapdragon version of the Note 3, which is the version with rom support.
>>
Question as you guys know more about smartphones than I do, why has HTC fallen so far from where they used to be? I remember HTC making the coolest, most sophisticated looking phones and they were the iPhones main competitor at the time.

Now, know one buys HTC devices. So, what happened?
>>
>>56285412
the htc m9 happened.

>grows up

>spending his time wisely
>suddenly loses interest in "customizing" his phone and instead just wants to use it to get shit done/entertain himself for a few minutes
Sincerely, congratulations anon. This is a step in the right direction

If you want to put up with iOS / iTunes and not having a dedicated back button, sure.

Or you could just get a decent stock android phone, saves you hassle transferring SIM data etc. Aswell.

I remember switching to WP a year back, and it really sucks since there's almost no support for saving your contact data. Will switch back to Android soon.

I love my Xperia Z3, but if Sony doesn't step it up with the XR I think I'll jump ship. Fuck touchjizz and I don't want a chinkphone, but the HTC 10 looks good. How is it? It has a SD card slot, right?

anyone know how the fuck ads would be still getting through to my device?
I have a pihole running, Adblock plus AND AdAway yet I still get ads within my apps and when I'm browsing the internet.
hell I've even patched my alarm clock app with LuckyPatcher and it still gives me ads.
>>
>>56286470
You have adware, I would assume
Is this in every app? Just the one app? Or every app with ads?

>>56286494
nevermind, I'm retarded. phone wasnt configured right, wasnt using the pihole, and I didnt set adblock apps up right.

So last year I fell for the Samsung Meme and got a s5.
Worst mistake of my life. The camera is okay and battery life is decent but it's slow as heck and feels cheap.
But overall I'm really satisfied with android although it's not as smooth as IOS.

Any recommendations for a good android phone with
>A good camera that is FAST
>Overall smooth software
>Battery life that is as good as the s5's atleast
>Screen can be 1080p I don't care as long as it's not horrible

I bought the s5 for 400 bucks if I remember correctly. Should I spend more this time?
Is it worth trying a chinkphone like the "redmi whatever its called" and flash cm?
>>
>>56287067
why don't you flash cm on the samsung?
>>
>>56287119
I did it one and had a couple of problems.
The mobile Internet wasn't working and the music player crashed occasionally. Aside from that it was smoother to be honest.
But it was kind of a hassle flashing the stock software again and I almost bricked it I think so I'm a bit scared.
But mostly It was because of the bugs I had.
Also I missed the notes widget because I like having my notes on screen all the time.

I was looking around a bit and saw the oneplus 3. Is it worth a consideration?
>>
>>56287119
What I forgot: the microphone quality was utter shit. It was so quiet nobody could hear me while talking on my phone.
Was it just the roms fault, should I try a different one than cyanogenmod?
>>
>>56287168
>>56287252
When did you try this? I never had those problems with the cm version of my xperia zr, and this one is far more unpopular than the s5. Normally bugs like that should be fixed quite soon. And I'm sure there are other note apps that you can use (check fdroid for FOSS Noteapps with no adds and other bullshit).
>>
>>56287287
A couple of month ago I think.
Im so tempted to try it again because it looked way better and performed way smoother but I don't want to end up with bugs again.
>>
>>56287337
That's odd, I expect phones like the s5 to work very good with cm since it's so popular amongst the dev community. You could also download a stable snapshot from the cyanogenmod.org website if there is one for your device.
>>
>>56287349
I had a nightly version and I heard they're rather unstable.
Could that have been the reason?
>>
>>56287379
I have a nightly version too and it's quite stable actually. Never had any problems like you are describing right now.

I'd simply try it again before buying a new phone honestly. There are also other Roms out there that should be good. If you are still not happy then go and look for a different phone.
>>
I was thinking about buying a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 pro.
Can i trust it? How much i will have to tinker with it if buy a global rom version?
And last question: my cellphone operator uses 800mhz and 2600mhz bands for 4g.
I've read that xiami doesnt support 800hmz, what does it mean? I wont just be able to use 4g or i wont be able to use internet in general? Ty guys
>>
>>56287404
Will do!
It's quite complicated but atleast I know how to go back to stock again though.
Everytime I'd try I got the same error message and I had to reorganise the parition space or something which too didn't work unless I forced to get the error, unplug the phone, then let a TWRP or how it's called do its work and plug it in again.
Little bit of a hassle but I got it to work again.
I hope I don't bother you but what also annoyed my that the backlight of the two buttons was lit everytime I touched something. With stock they'd just light up if pressed and not with every action. Is there a way to tweak it?
>>
>>56287404
And im really not trying to sound racist. But almost every tutorial made on youtube about flashing software is made by an Indian and the accent is driving me nuts. What exactly does appeal them so much ?
>>
>>56287494
I always close the video when I hear an indian accent. It's horrible.

>>56287466
No idea about the buttons. XDA might know more, or google.
