Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Anyone have recent experience with Fedora?
How buggy is it? How complete are the repos compaired to Debian? Is it easy to install non-free software? How good is the package manager?
>>
>>56239015
Used korora for a bit. Honestly Fedora and Arch stability are both less than you expect. Fedora comes with additional freetard autism
>>
If i buy raspberry pi 3 and put a linux on it, will all repos be available on it? like can it do apt-get for anything that i could do on a desktop computer, or will i be limited only to a tiny selection of applications because they have to have an arm version too?
>>
>>56239277
You need to install a distro that supports ARM architecture.
Debian is probably your best bet.
You can then use all of that distro's software for ARM.
>>
>>56239321
I know the distro must be ARM, but do the application must be arm as well?
For example let's say i can do apt-get install poop
on ordinary NONarm debian, can i do apt-get install poop on the PI as well? or will that only work if the poop developer specifically made poop for ARM as well?
>>
>>56239348
The package needs to be available for ARM, yes.
On Debian, you'll still have a huge selection, since their main goal is to be the Universal Operating System, so porting stuff to all architectures is a high priority.
>>
>>56238776
do you mean the window decoration or the LXQt themes for the panels?
>>
>>56239364
I see. I basically want to make a web server, so i need to make sure that apache, php and mysql are available for the debian arm
>>
>>56239385

>>56239410
Perfect thanks. One more question, i don't want to run any GUI directly on the pi, but i want to be able to connect to the PI from windows via some remote desktop way (so in the windows i can actually interact with the pi via normal GUI)
is that possible?
>>
>>56239015
Running Fedora 24 currently and I'm kinda happy with it, haven't encountered any major problems in roughly 2 months or so.
>>
>>56239433
Having a GUI on your main system that controls the Pi is possible. You need to run a linux system with a GUI on your Windows computer (e.g. from a live CD, or in a virtual machine), connect that to your Pi, then chroot into it.
>>
>>56239433
SSH
>>
>>56239256
Yes. The window decorations and the appearance (of like tabs and buttons and stuff).
>>
>>56239774
The window manager on the pic you posted is not openbox, its KWin. Install it and use kwin --replace. For the GTK styles LXQt currently lacks a menu to customizethe GTK styles I believe. For the Qt styling I am not sure, last version I tested was 0.9
>>
>>56239823
Thanks, will do. The "About LXQt" window is Qt though, it changes when I change my Qt theme.
>>
>>56239849
Yes, I think all of the LXQt applications are Qt, not only About.
>>
Is Bunsenlabs Linux a good distro to get familiar with the Linux environment?
>>
>>56239870
Yeah, my point was that the gtk theme isn't the problem.
>>
>>56239901

Any distribution is good to get familiar with the "Linux environment". Using a shitty, niche distribution which adds a new wallpaper and bugs isn't a good idea.

Where do you idiots find those distributions? Do you search for "obscure distribution for me" on the internet?
>>
>>56239901
Yes, if you want to get to know the original Linux feel, without any of the improvements its user interface got within the past 20 years.

Or if you want to run it on a toaster.

I used several distros in the last few years, mostly on my old laptop : mostly Xubuntu, and more recently Manjaro which emancipated me.

To be honest, I know I've never used those OS to their full extent and potential. I know I've been a relentless beginner all the time.

Now I want to challenge myself. I want to level up. I want to be able to do things. I want to be done with the "i'm using it because it's cool to be able to sudo the shit out of my computer every once in a week". I want to become an accomplished Unix learner and user.

So tell me, what distro should I install and why?

I was seriously thinking ArchLinux.

Also, any "learn the hard way" method out there?
>>
>>56240884
>Also, any "learn the hard way" method out there?
Install Arch from the wiki.
>>
I'm trying to host this by running it with python HTTP.server module.
It runs the JS part but the PHP isn't running.
It doesn't create "_chat.txt" and no chat log is recorded.

You should stay on the one you have and customize it to your needs.

Like Arch? Don't install it. Turn Manjaro into Arch, by pointing it to Arch's repositories and removing all Manjaro-specific stuff.
Or better yet, find a worthwhile project that interests you, and use Linux to work on that, instead of working on Linux.

Basically its a login screen, takes your password input, and if you have multiple DE/WM you can pick one dynamically depending on what you want to do.

>>

Because the [Ubuntu but with a different DE] is maintained and configured by a separate team. They have people dedicated to making each flavor of Ubuntu work well with your preferred DE. I've heard really good things about Ubuntu MATE.

On other distros, your preferred DE might not have as much support, and may not be as nice or usable out of the box, because it isn't the primary one that they showcase and focus on.

Why would someone bother with creating a buggy, incomplete abstraction layer which tries to satisfy everyone's needs?
>>
>>56243124
Market share of what?
>>
>>56243124
Because MS uses their dominance to make deals with hardware manufacturers ensuring that they will continue to sell PC's prepackaged with it. And 90% of the market doesn't even know you can change your OS and doesn't care. For them, Windows == the PC. Even if Windows sucks, they don't even realize it. They just think they're not good with computers.

And? Crunchbang was just Debian with Openbox and tint2 and a shitty Conky which displayed keyboard shortcuts. Bunsenlabs is one of those shitty niche distributions which I was talking about.

Serious people (read: people who actually use their operating system and aren't just installing it to post their screenfetch and screenshots) use "core" distributions. They go upstream and pick their distribution based on actually worthwhile differences and features which define a distribution.

Mostly because of the daemon mode. You can open hundreds of terminal clients for one daemon. Then it's just comfy because you configure it in your Xresources and you can script everything (like matching colors to your wallpaper etc). Perl extensions can be useful (click on a url to open it in the browser and all that jazz).

The /home/<user> folder should only contain the folders (ie pics, docs, music etc) which again contain files?

And apps and programs position themselves independently on the system, ie you just install them and then they automatically go where they belong (which varies, but is outside of /home) ?

If I install some program from the command line, they'll automatically position themselves where they belong?
But what do I do when I have to download a program from a website, say I download a zipped folder, unpack it, go into the folder, run the set-up script using the terminal. At this point the folder for the program is still located where I downloaded it too, of course I can move it around, but wasn't the system supposed to place it automatically? How do I make it do that?

You don't normally install software outside of your package manager. But if you do, it'll usually be via make install command, which usually places stuff under /usr/local.

You can literally install Linux with nothing but the Kernel and a command line if you want.

Okay, so say I want to install Pycharm IDE for instance. If I can do it with the package manager, then how do I find out what to apt-get install?

If I simply do as in pic related, the folder for pycharm stays where I unpacked the zipped file. I can still use Pycharm IDE just fine, but I cannot search it using the dash, or start it from the command line, plus it feels very ugly and disorganized having it there.

So how do I make Pycharm go where it should at this point (say I installed it to /home/<user>) and will this allow me to start it from the terminal, and search it using the dash?

apt-cache search <something>

Probably you have to add a .desktop file for it.

Put it in (or a symlink) to any directory listed in the $PATH variable.

Well, you could search it in your repo, try to find a PPA.

To launch a program from terminal by typing the name, you have to put it or a link to it in one of the directories in a special variable $PATH, or change this variable.
To display this variable run e.g. echo $PATH. To add a directory to it, for instance /home/user/foo, add this to the file ~/.profile (create it if it doesn't exist):
export PATH=/home/user/foo:$PATH

man pages are fucking useless for wireless setup.

Even though I've done this before several times, figuring out exactly which tect files to create and what to write in them is a pain in the ass, but my point is:

IT IS USELESS. It is a task that has been automated, there is no need for customization, wireless simply needs to work. A script can write the necessary files, but Arch refuses to ship that script for no reason whatsoever.

You dont have to use the distro, no one is forcing you too, hell make a fork of it and add your one lousy script and market it to your "audience" who lack basic computing skills

AMDs drivers are unrelated to Ubuntu's release circle. Ubuntu deciding to not including those drivers does not mean that AMD did anything to them.

In elementary OS the terminal and file manager re-open to the area I closed out of last. I noticed that there is a tab system to those. Can I disable the dabs and set it to default to one location each time I open it?
>>
>>56247705
So how do I close it /trying to learn basic commands/ here.

Also how come neither the arch nor gentoo wiki mention this happening, I followed it exactly and on two different machines.

I know that I can delete my bash history from home. But how do I delete the sudo, admin I don't know history?Where's the archive?

Opinions on Fedora MATE?
>>
>>56249304
Bash reads the defined history file mentioned in your ~/.bashrc. If you're using sudo, it's still the same history file.

Just don't creaone one in the first place.
export HISTFILE='/dev/null'

I bet you installed catalyst. The free amd driver works very well, better than nvidia proprietary for non-gaming uses. It works well for most games, too. But some have issues due to opengl versions.

Trying to pass through a NIC to my VM.
When I add it to my script
-device vfio-pci,host=04:00.0
It tells me group 10 is not available, even though it's in
/dev/vfio

I'm not using it since there's only 1 NIC listen in ifconfig besides loopback

What is the meme os these days? About to reinstall my laptop, not sure what I should install

Which is which, senpai?

I asked this in the stupid questions thread but no one answered, so I figured I'd ask here:

Can I make an ISO that has Arch Linux with a desktop environment already on it that I can then install onto a flash drive? And if so, how?
>>
>>56250204
Check out "Architect Installer"

It's just a graphical installer for Arch that takes you every step of the way, including installing a DE of your choosing, if you want.
>>
>>56250240
What is wrong with you people? If you can't install Arch, don't install Arch. If you want to install Arch, follow the Wiki, which are like 10 cli steps and done.

When I unzip my Japanese stuff, the files come out in what looks like glitchy Russian.
Is there some setting I need to change?
I use good ol' Ubuntu.
>>
>>56250240
Cool, thanks
>>56250300
Well what I'm trying to do is create an iso that already has a desktop environment and doesn't really need to be installed
>>
>>56250300
I've installed Arch with the installation guide before. Architect basically goes through all the same steps, but makes it easier and also lets you install additional packages at the end.

What benefits are there to installing it manually, besides taking longer and having a less usable system at the end?
>>
>>56250339

wat

>basically
So it only supports the "default" "settings" the "devs" "think" " are right"?
Nah id rather type out a one liner with one switch and get it done properly for my setup

>>
>>56250856
you didnt set your boot drive in syslinux.cfg
If you did, use UUID instead of hard links
>>

syslinux.cfg just has

DEFAULT loadconfig

LABEL loadconfig
CONFIG /isolinux/isolinux.cfg
APPEND /isolinux/

Understanding the Linux Kernel, 3rd Edition

Maybe a stupid question but is it even necessary to restart after upgrading packages in any circumstances?
>>
>>56249272
Make sure you exec your DE in your .xinitrc, and exec your xinit or startx when starting your graphical session.
exec will actually replace the shell with xinit and then the DE, making that exploit impossible.
