Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

stallman is not a philosophically pure person. he follows his ideals when convenient, and ignores them or slightly alters them when the conflict isn't worth it.

stallman is an egoist in denial, afraid of admitting that he just wants some fucking source code instead of a world where he has to rely on other people because he knows he wouldn't get it that way.

his system has some practical merits but his attempts at creating moral justifications are completely pathetic and nonsensical. how low do you have to be to have to make up bullshit "oughts" when you can just say "it would be fucking better"?

Some basic questions that hopefully someone could help me out with:

1) If I copy paste my hexchat config directory found in Home to my laptop, will I have my nicknames and servers just the way I have them on my desktop? Or do I need to do something else too?

2) How can I configure i3 to always open a specific program on a certain workspace? I tried following manuals but for some reason they always open in the workspace I'm on at the time, never where they're supposed to

3) How can I configure vim to save backup ~ and .un files in a specific directory, to keep my working directories neat? Again, I followed a guide I found but apparently the syntax he mentioned for the .vimrc file was wrong, because vim said it found an error on that line.

4) What features would you recommend for a beginner vim user looking for syntax highlighting, tab completion and other handy plugins/configs you might use when programming, so that it feels like a fully fledged work environment?

5) I'm using Debian Sid with i3. Is there a way I could get a working filepicker with thumbnails on Firefox without having to compile stuff? I'm afraid if I do that I might overwrite something important or make upgrading Firefox later on harder.

Thank you for your time, if you could help me out with any or all of these that would be great

Why tell me i "ought" to do this because it is better in his opinion. This is telling everyone they are wrong and "ought" to change.
When he could make a list of things that "are better" then what is currently available.

OUGHT=Im telling you, you are wrong

Suppose, I know it's crazy, that I have a different set of values and different standards than you do.

So, in that case, my informed decision could easily be the opposite of yours, given the same data.

In that case how is it better? Is one of us simply wrong? Are we both wrong? Could we both be right?

Doing a netinstall with non-free firmware is probably the best way to go for having just what you want plus easy Wi-Fi recognition on awkward hardware.

>>
>>56230038
In my experience Debian is more complicated than arch. Debian has complicated system of handing what ends up in a repo, and it can lead to headaches. "arch is complicated" is a meme. Honest.

Otherwise, switch to Debian sid (or testing is also fine but this goes back to what I was saying about the their repos) An Ubuntu flavor is probably more up to date than mint I believe. Also consider Manjaro. Never tried it but I hear okay things.

Yes, you do.

You dont need wayland or x. you can do everything via commandline.

There threads have proven numerous times that even retards can install Arch.
It's not complicated unless you start to want some fancy setup, but that's also the end of the line for the installers in other distros where you have to jump in and do things manually.

Honestly anon, if you've been using Linux for a select number of years, you probably already KNOW what goes into your operating system. Installing the baseline arch system is just as simple as punching in some commands and following a wiki + another page. (I actually recommend cross referencing this one guide floating around. http://www.muktware.io/arch-linux-guide-the-always-up-to-date-arch-linux-tutorial/ It gets you to the usability stage a little more than just the wiki does.)

Once you're installed, the only things you have to install usually is network manager, gnome-keyring, network manager applet, and a DE (and appending exec ((DE)) to the xorg but that's piss easy). Those are the only huge things that you probably aren't used to installing yourself. After that, it's just like any other linux install. You install firefox, you install libre office, you install whatever the hell else you want.

I got frustrated by debian. Sure, the install is easy and I sometimes wish arch had it, but I have spent more time trying to get debian the way I wanted it than the time it took me to install arch.

I wanna say I recommend manjaro over debian, but I feel as if it suffers from similar issues of packages just not being present in any shape. But I think I'm wrong.

Because Linux is made by developers trying to build the best system they can for its users, not the most profitable for its shareholders?

Pretty sure he's telling you TO dual boot Windows, because Pinta is basically a FOSS/Linux version of Paint.NET which is only available on Windows. Personally, I think GIMP works just as well (better in some ways), it's just not as intuitive as Pinta/Paint.NET.

Arch specifically doesn't encourage choice.
If you want some special snowflake configuration, Arch isn't for you.

Arch is meant to be KISS on the developer's side, which means you take it the way they want it or fuck off.

It's OK, don't worry. There are good reasons not to use it from an objective standpoint (the developers hold back security updates if those would interfere with how they want to maintain their distro).
But it's still much MUCH safer than Windows, and easy to learn.
Maybe at some point you'll feel the need for a change and migrate to another distro, but Mint isn't a bad starting point.

Yeah it's pretty easy to install fonts, lol.

first, go to /etc/fonts/conf.d and make sure there is no file named 70-no-bitmaps.conf
If there is, delete it.
Next, while still in that directory
ln -s ../conf.avail/70-yes-bitmaps.conf

This will tell fontconfig you definitely want bitmap fonts available (may work even without this step but w/e m8)

Do the following, won't necessarily explain the shit you should really understand:
cd
wget http://font.gohu.org/gohufont-2.1.tar.gz
tar xvf gohufont-2.1.tar.gz
mkdir ~/.fonts
cp gohufont-2.1/*.pcf.gz ~/.fonts
mkfontdir ~/.fonts
mkfontscale ~/.fonts
xset +fp ~/.fonts
xset fp rehash
sudo fc-cache -fv

Newly opened programs should have gohufont available to them

Source: literally a Windows user
Pic related, just did these exact steps in a Manjaro VM and as you can see gohufont works

From the last thread:
>>
>>56232579
oh and I'll explain the lines you didn't necessarily need to know to be a basic user

xset +fp ~/.fonts adds ~/.fonts to the CURRENTLY RUNNING X's font path.
xset fp rehash tells X to reload the font path
fc-cache -fv rebuilds X's font cache

If you want to make ~/.fonts as a font path permanent you need to add it to xorg.conf (iirc it now follows the same conf.d/ format most other shit does now so you can make a file like /etc/X11/conf.d/99-homefont.conf ) You can also put the fonts in some directory in /etc/fonts that is already in the X font path. Usually I'd just add the xset commands into my ~/.xinitrc for the sake of it being easy.
>>

If you read about it a bit more, you'll realize that all the arguments against it aren't based on anything current, just vague fears of what MIGHT happen in the future (but hasn't happened in the past 3 years) and ancient philosophy.

There is literally no reason not to use systemd at present. It works, is open source, actively developed, does what it's supposed to do, and is backwards compatible to that ancient stuff autists love so much.

I'm personally not a fan. I think it's gotten a lot better, and between you and me (don't tell my friends) it was the first time coming to Linux that made me go "wow this is really cool!"

But for what it offers, I find it really heavy and inefficient, and find myself more interested in using KDE if anything, unless I don't want to fuck with qt. Development's come a LONG ways though, and I should probably give it another chance.

I tend to assume more people around here are laptop fags though, and gnome and KDE are both okay for desktops, not so much for laptops.

>>56236043
MATE is good shit anon. It's a fork of GNOME 2, so it's known for being rock stable. I would reckon it is the most stable DE as a result (Citation needed.)

If you're familiar with xfce, it's similar to that. An efficient, compact, and light design with an emphasis on functionality. MATE menu is the mint menu ported over if you prefer more of a traditional start menu.

Xfce is also a good recommendation, but I have had some problems with lightDM and the power manager in the past. It also requires a little more to get "functional" if you are starting from a fresh install.

If you are using Xubuntu though, these are minor complaints and you should ignore them entirely. I recommend both, because it's easy to get both looking good!

Actually, if there's something that makes possible a key combo (something+space) that opens a input box where I can type what I want to open, a file browser with tabs and nothing on the desktop, I'm all in, any suggestions?

mate or xfce do that out of box I believe

Coreboot is what you are thinking of. That is the project upstream from Libreboot. Google supports the development of Coreboot quite a bit. Coreboot is a mostly free BIOS that has some proprietary firmware. Because of that it supports more devices. Libreboot takes Coreboot, and reverse engineers free replacements for all of the proprietary firmware on the devices they support.

What virtual machine should I use on xubuntu to use windows 8.1? Can I save files on VM?
>>
Newbie linux user here, installed Debian on VirtualBox a while back, went through the whole installation process, set encrypted LVM and when i went to enter password, system wouldn't let me in despite it being key for key.

Keyboard was good, everything else was good, just that one thing.

Deleted it, currently on the boot screen at the moment.

Anyone have an idea of what might've happened?

Is it worth getting the Dell XPS Developer Edition if I'm just going to replace Ubuntu with Debian? The Developer Edition comes with an Intel wifi card that seems to work better.

Yes, chroot back in. But you will need /dev, /proc, and /sys. Use bind mounts to get them in your chroot directory.

Network boot is a huge pain in the ass. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are willing to spend some hours reading manuals and fiddling with it.

there is literally nothing difficult about setting up a basic arch system. The only problem i ever had is setting up an EFI install and thats only because i am a mongoloid and didnt read beforehand.

It's a known bug. Go to console and come back to get your mouse back: Cntrl Alt f1 and cntrl alt f8

I'm using xubuntu

I saw this pretty neat thing that I saw people on linux use. On their screen to their right, were able to pull up some menu and he was able to change his background with the click of a picture. Scrolling down the menu, he was able to fix his resolutions to 1600x900, 1920,1080, 720x69. How can I get this?

you better be of jokings comrade

>open minded
in what way is this open minded? urging any users to think the way you want to is not open minded. users and developers should be allowed to think whatever the fuck they want politically

>supporting women in technology
women have the same chances in tech as men. what they want is equality of outcome and not equality of opportunities. so this really isnt equality or anything

>some general guidelines
anti-harassment guidelines arent a general and important thing. also refer to first point

but you can use GNOME without using systemd (refer to GuixSD for example)

i dont know if it still installs systemd dependencies though

How can a protocol require systemd? [citation needed]

That's not true. Kill yourself for spreading misinformation.

No you should stay away from [X] based distros entirely.

Either use Debian, or Arch.
Or one of the other long-standing, original distros, like OpenSUSE, Fedora, Gentoo and Slackware.

I just installed LXQt on Funtoo, unfortunately it didn't seem to come with the openbox/qt themes they used in the screenshot on their website. Does anyone know where I can find those?

Anyone have recent experience with Fedora?

I've tried Debian.
Didn't like that Stable is too conservative, and Testing/Unstable are (semi) rolling release which aren't fully supported with security updates.
I'm also not a fan of Apt.

I've tried Ubuntu.
Didn't like that release upgrades don't reliably work and that it's based on another distro.

I've tried Arch.
Don't want rolling release anymore, and don't like its devs' philosophy of "You don't like what we do? Fuck you, go away."
Also, the official repo is too small.

How buggy is Fedora? How complete are the repos compaired to Debian? Is it easy to install non-free software? How good is the package manager?

im having trouble getting bluetooth to work on my t430.
its using the intel chipset rather than the broadcom chipset for wifi. so that works right out of the box.
the bluetooth module worked right out of the box though on my older mint install.
ive installed bluez and all of its modules to see if that works but those dont seem to do anything beyond integrate bluetooth functionality into plasma.
anyone know which package i need to install or if i need windows firmware?
the wiki didnt hold much information.
everything else works pretty much right out of the box even the finger print reader. suspend and resume works fine, also.
the integrated modem does also work. i tested it with my phone sim.

I don't understand this. How does "no mp3" work?

Which package would be responsible to allow you MP3 file playback? I assume it's something like ffmpeg — when someone creates a music player and uses ffmpeg for playing file. Does that mean Fedora builds ffmpeg without MP3 support (either disabling the encoder or decoder or both)?
