IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I want to replace the thermal paste on the Nvidia GPU of my T420. It has a thermal pad underneath it. So far I've had a few suggestions:

- Reuse thermal pad
- Apply thermal paste on top of thermal pad
- Throw away thermal pad and just use thermal paste

This Thinkpad hasn't been repasted in 5 years so it's getting pretty warm idle temps. Thoughts?

Atleast 100$ too expensive if in US unless everything is pimped to max and it's in mint condition.

If you don't sperge about the keyboard layout then X230 is superior in every way and even the layout is fixable if you're willing to tinker a bit.

I've got a thinkpad dock with a display port, VGA port and a DVI port and a t420

What I want to know, is what monitors can I connect?

Is there a total maximum resolution or can I connect two 1920x1080 monitors through the display port and the DVI port? Asking because google results come up with people that cant, and wizards that can
Or does it work like that my monitors must be able to 'fit' inside a 2560x1440 box?

so i found an old thinkpad today, model R400.
It has a P8400 Dual core CPU, 4gig DDR3 ram and 160gig drive.

Is it worth it to upgrade it to 120gig ssd? What about more ram/maybe a new cpu?

it has only the gma4 onboard graphics so not something for gaming. It runs runescape so its fine.

Hey /tpg/, I got a T400 for free, has 4gigs of RAM, the super fucking bright 1280x800 screen, although it doesn't have a hard drive. Thinking of picking up an SSD for cheap and then using it as a general shitposting machine to complement my T530. The question I'm trying to figure out is whether or not I should install some Linux distro or if I should try restoring Windows (I have an unused Win 7 upgrade CD and the computer seems to have a valid Vista key). Is there any advantage to using Windows with these machines? Does Linux play well with SSDs?

Linux has no problems with SSDs and distros generally detect it automatically to set up SSD optimized configs. Windows vs. Linux is up to you but Linux generally works better on older computers such as T400. Windows 10 will not support T400 as it has too old graphics card. IMO you lose most of the benefits of Windows on old computers as most of the desirable software that isn't available on Linux requires more up to date computer.

You and >>56241304 might want to check out the Advanced Dock wich supports adding eGPU:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_Advanced_Dock

>>56241304
SSD is always worth it if you're planning on using it for anything. You could add up to 8GB ram too but I'm not sure whether you can switch the CPU.

Not sure if affect T400 or R400 but it seems having only 65W charger throttles the performance on older models. Pic from earlier thread.

My helix has a weird display issue and I can't find any mention of it online.
There's something like a grid or scale pattern of slightly brighter and darker pixel groups, almost unnoticeable at some angles, but very annoying at others.

I wasn't really planning to use Windows 10 anyways since the free upgrade period has expired, and the highest version of Windows I have is Win 7. I am also told that this version works best on the T400. Just about the only advantage I can think of for Linux is its resistance to getting botnetted by sketchy port sites.

>>56245347
I think the thing that passes a lot of people off is not necessarily that Thinkpads are worse than other laptops on the market, it's that they are more cheaply built than older Thinkpads. The bar is being lowered across all ranges of laptops.

But Debian on thinkpads is definitely doable, no problem. Based on the pictures you posted your thinkpad isn't the newest, so on the driver front you probably won't have to do anything to get your hardware working on a clean debian install.

No download an ISO from the internet.
Make sure it is the pro edition, and use the key on the bottom of the notebook.
Then install drivers and windows updates through an internet connection, sometimes the onboard wireless will not work so you need to use a USB wifi card or Ethernet cable.
This is the cleanest way and the most recommended way imho.

I'm sure all those anonymous usage/stability statistics are going to ruin my life. People always parrot "less spying" on Enterprise versions, but no one ever seems to be able to go into detail about what that actually means.
On the other hand, Microsoft states that the spying boogeyman doesn't include any personally identifiable information, so I can't bring myself to care enough to fetch an Enterprise ISO and reinstall my machines just for this.

As for updates, I very rarely see anything broken even on insider/fast ring builds.

Nigga, there has been evidence floating around that it occasionally takes screenshot of desktop to send as part of "anonymous" telemetry. >>

Yeah, it showed 1 KB when he selected the thing in his file explorer, and that video is the only "evidence" I've ever even heard of regarding those supposed screenshots.
So I'm going to call fake and gay on that one much like a lot of other anons did when it came up months ago, and trust that Microsoft aren't lying when they claim their statistics are anonymous. At least until someone can come up with some real evidence proving otherwise.
>>
>>56248974

right, but when I remove the heatsink to repaste the CPU the GPU will also detach from the sink. Are you saying I should just reattach it without doing anything?
>>
>>56249616
Well you remove the old paste and apply new one before reattaching the heatsink. You should do both GPU and CPU at the same time. Some models don't have a dGPU so ppl mostly talk about repasting the CPU but it is pretty obvious that you should do the same to the GPU too.

Thanks, I'll look more into this model. Thinking about it, I've only ever used (although briefly) the keyboard on the T410 and am wondering if the new ones are as comfy.
>>
>>56249657
right, but the dGPU does not use thermal paste, it uses a thermal pad. Replacing the pad with paste wouldn't work for the dGPU because there is a gap between the heatsink and GPU surface.

In that case disregard what I said. I have used a different model and don't have experience on thermal pads.

The new keyboards are very comfy compared to consumer laptops. T420 has better keyboard layout but that's about it. It's been a long time since I've been in the market for a laptop, but my sister's birthday's coming up and my mother would like to get her a computer so she'll get the fuck out of her office when doing homework.

I'd like something that will last as long as possible when reasonably maintained, so I'm looking at newer outlet/refurb stuff rather than used older stuff. I see that the X260s are pretty cheap, worth $420?

For the exact same price I could get from the Dell Outlet a Latitude 3470. These look pretty low end, I doubt they're built to the same standards a Thinkpad is but it has a higher res display, a backlit keyboard, and a slightly higher end CPU (i5-6200U vs i3-6100U)

Opinions? Should I look at other models? Dell has an outlet sale on currently, while that X260 is new from the Lenovo outlet.

I like both. It's a comforting feeling to give a tired, beaten-down Thinkpad a nice retirement home, but there's also something to be said for classic hardware that looks pristine and performs better than it ever did when it was new ten years ago. >The little push down strip sat fine on the paste and didn't pop back up
by "push down strip" do you mean the heatsink/metal assembly or do you mean the thermal pad?

BTW I just found out my overheating issues were caused by a botnet on my PC lmao... viruses were detected this morning and 2 login attempts were made into my Microsoft and Twitter accounts

reinstalled and temps are idling around 50C under medium load

I sort of want to replace my desktop with a laptop for the purposes of having a more portable life. Is there a Thinkpad with good enough specs to run games (not top end games like Witcher 3 or whatever the fuck comes out these days mind) that doesn't break the bank? The highest spec game I play is Rocket League. Pls no bully.
>>
I just bought a 'genuine' battery from a large chain store in my country... found out it's fake/counterfeit. Theyre Lenovo authorized resellers too

I kinda wanna tell someone at Lenovo, I called the callcentre but I don't think the employee really cared

Returning it tomorrow, I'm pretty pissed off

why do people ask about none-thinkpad laptops in the thinkpad general all the time?
it's very rude

looks like a good deal, try to get the i7 version if you can afford it, the screen is better and has higher resolution

i just upgraded to the i7 t420 after 5 years of using the i5 version and it's a nice improvement
>>
>>56251779
Nice aquarium anon. That's really aesthetic.
>>
>>56256354
I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 on my i7 T420, it's already running great. windows installed all my drivers automatically, gave me the option to disable automatic reports to MS (which I did), works seamlessly with the dock and switching between integrated and discrete graphics

plus the wifi actually works unlike in Linux (which I ran on this admittedly 4 years ago)

why should I ? this is the thinkpad general not the laptop general
>>
>>56256267
To add to this, I'm willing to spend like £400-500 on a Thinkpad, it just has to be able to run SOME games without needing an external GPU. I'm fine with running games at low specs. Will a T430 be able to run Rocket League?

Better be careful with the cooling.

I want to replace the display of my x250 with an ips one, couldn't find much about it googling but on the x240 it seems like it's just a matter of removing the bezel and unplugging the old display/plugging in the new one

anyone have experience with this on the x250? is it the same shit?

I suppose that'll void my warranty, do I lose warranty for the whole laptop or just the screen?
