X320 meme screen edition

Previous thread: >>56238717

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Dock guys here. So, I was thinking about getting a dock but am worried about the position of the fan. The thing on the left side of the dock seems to be blocking ventilation.

It does nothing of the sort.

It absolutely partially blocks the fan. I don't have any issues with it normally but when I play CSGO I take it off the dock.

Runs maybe 2 degrees warmer on the dock under normal conditions though, definitely worth the functionality still. No doubt lenovo fucked it up though.

I recently bought a new battery for my T410 and I now get five to six hours instead of a mere 1 hour.

What are some tricks to keeping that number high? I haven't owned a laptop in a while and when I did I just used it at home. This thinkpad is both a plaything for me and a work computer for college and personal projects.

Just got an X230 and did a clean install of Windows 7. The Laptop was reconditioned, so there was Windows 7 on it, but without proper drivers or Lenovo software.

What now? I've never done a clean Windows install before - I'm used to Mac OS X and Linux which just werk.

How do I know what I need to install? Does Windows figure out its own drivers, or do I need to manually install everything relevant from the Lenovo support website?

And what is security like these days - recommended antivirus, etc?

For HDD to SSD, it is recommended to clean install on the SSD and then transfer data/programs to the SSD.
Windows installs differently on SSD, you don't want the OS to think you have an HDD and then starts defraging your SSD when on idle
shit will die.

IPS mod kits were available for T420s/30s, up to 1080p, 4K is available but requires motherboard soldering rework, and you lose dock functionality.
Regular T420 & T430 did have the IPS mod kit but had flickering issues, ja javie is working on a new kit fixing this issue
T420s come with 900p display standard
T430s should as well (but I came across one with a 720p!)

T431 can be upgraded to 1080p IPS, 900p standard
T440 is only 720p I believe, cannot be upgraded
T440s/p can be upgraded to 1080p IPS
T450 base model can be upgraded to 1080p

>Rigght and a $3000 18" Gaymen laptop DESTROYS it right?
For its intended purpose, yes it very much does.
I personally would never buy a gaymen laptop because they're retarded, but can't deny that such a thing would perform better in gaymez than something with a goddamn NVS GPU from 4 years ago.

I didn't buy this T430 to mainly play gaymes on it. This GPU is good enough to handle gaymes, so I occasionally gaym on it when I'm out. That's all.

I don't see how that would solve the hdd formatting issue. And I found that the ssd has a 20gb recovery partition, and another partition on 20gb along with the 70gb one that is visible in the properties menu.

Got an i5 x220 arriving tomorrow and an msata ssd ready to dump in.

Few questions:

>Anything I should check with it? e.g. Fake shit, common defects, specific model details, anti theft shit

I will primarily run a Linux distro which I'm yet to decide on.. But will also likely dual boot it with Win7.
>Heard about ThinkVantage and lots of brilliant 'just werks' out of the box functionality. Is this windows exclusive?
>What's Linux support like? Is it a pain to drag up all the appropriate drivers?

>I heard it has throttling issues with an extra RAM stick dumped in. Is this true? I have 2x4GB

>From what I gather I have no USB 3. But can I extend to this functionality with a USB 3 expresscard?

>Do the mobile modem features work out of the box? I've heard both that it's in its primary feature set but also people are lumping in msata modules. I'm definitely getting my wires crossed somewhere here.

cheers

you mainly use the thinkvantage system update so it automatically installs drivers.
linux support is perfect OOTB
RAM is never a problem
No USB3, express cards work but don't deliver enough current for HDDs (if you get a good expresscard that is)
2 mpcie or whatever the shits called slots you also use for msata.
1 is WLAN/BT etc, the other is - if it's installed, modem.
Basically, modem or mSata ssd.

Why are all laptops so shitty? I've been looking for about a week now and they're all complete shit, none of them are close to my needs. I've never used a MacBook but after browsing shit for the past week and after making fun of them for years they seem to be just about the only no-nonsense laptop in production today.

If I get a modern Thinkpad they're overpriced as shit and the keyboard is ass. If I get an X220 refurb then the screen is shit, you've got to use the ugly battery pack, and the fans love to kick on.

Where the hell is a good laptop? I don't care about dedicated graphics. I've never really used OSX but for what I like to do I'm worried it would be too limiting.

Why can't someone just make a basic looking laptop that isn't all flare with a decent keyboard, 2k resolution without touch, 16gb ram, SSD, and good color accuracy? I feel close to picking up a Zenbook Pro but the screen looks too reflective and the keyboard looks shitty. Is there something I'm missing?

Figured that it's the dedicated craphics that make it do that, so i heated up the sucker and it started working again for a while (week maybe)

Nope. It's a modded 20 series, you get Sandy Bridge. Or Ivy Bridge with the X330, which in turn is a modded X230.

Sadly they're also extremely limited, only 32 in total (8x i5 and 8x i7 for both models) for the time being afaik. Mod kit on its own also not for sale for the time being.
Oh, and they're both expensive and very sold out.

Do you wanna dual boot? If you do then install W10 first.
Unfortunately they seem to have removed the Beginners guide, which was easier to follow, so for the install use this
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/installation_guide

pic related can be good as an overview, but I would also suggest looking up what the commands in it does.
Remember that you shouldn't setup the EFI one if you dual boot since Windows will have made on, but still mount it in boot.

>tfw you have both the i5 and i7 x220t and they both randomly shut off and have phantom input issues ;_;

After checking the obvious stuff like new thermal paste and adapter wattage, I am almost certain the shut offs are because of ACPI instant off commands. It would seem the CPU throttling is lowering the voltage too much. This happens in both Windows and Fedora, probably because of the power management driver sucking. I need to look into that more. In the meantime, I can prevent the random shut offs by setting the minimum frequency high enough. I still can't seem to eliminate the random touchscreen clicks though. I updated the drivers or tried multiple ones, checked xinput info, and updated BIOS. I also tested and replicated the issue on 65w and 90w adapters, and on battery. Still seeing the issue every time in both Fedora and Windows. While I don't want to say its hardware issues yet, its looking like the likely cause. Apparently this is a common issue in several of the 20 series motherboards. I am surprised it would happen in both my x220t's around the same time, but that's Lenovo for you. Anyone else experience these issues?

it says," Intel Core i3 Processor, 3.4 GHz or better" and a decent display/ resolution

Under $500 would be nice. I was thinking the ThinkPad T440 or something from the W series, any suggestions?

>>56264553
No, you extract the drive from the machine, image it using dd_rescue and then run PhotoRec on that
Then you install whatever SSD you want on your chinkpad

Disable Computrace permanently >>56264926

Get an Intel T61 board, the Nvidia model will keep dying forever
It might be cheaper to obtain the board from another T61, and keep it as a parts laptop

recommend to me a good workstation?

prefer 6th gen i7 or late model xeon (minimum 4 cores, preferably more) 16+gb RAM (preferably dual channel or even quad channel)

max budget $1000
if laptop screen should be 1080p
if desktop, $800 (reserving $200 for 1080p monitor)

A31p Type 2654-MU2
I added a numberpad, a pricey option at the time.
It composes of the numberpad FRU 19K2056
& the carrier tray/ultrabay 26P9388
The A30 introduced a second ultrabay, the original A2x series was a media based ThinkPad, it had a floppy drive built in to addition of a ultrabay.

Sadly A series aren't as well built as T series, more plastic.
Easy to open up though!

Haha, wow I got a way better deal than I thought... But yeah I think this is just a different version of the battery (I think I remember people telling me it is the slightly worse version), I also have a worn-down version of the one in your picture, but a genuine one.

Good luck on your purchase, maybe just sit on the results pages for a little while until something good pops up. I think that's probably what I did.

How'd I do, /g/ents? t420 $150.

absolute pristine condition. not so much as a fingerprint or scuff. the only way i know it was lightly used was that the left trackpoint button is a bit looser than the rest of the keys. ram and SSD are on the way. it runs a bit toasty when I'm running a full Malwarebytes scan.

im running warm like him too. i also have shit battery life. given this thing has probably sat untouched in a backroom somewhere, could it just be undercharged battery?

I keep getting that "replace battery" thing for windows 7 but i've read that's a bios/firmware/something bug and isn't actually related to how good the battery is

how can i cycle this battery or whatever to get a few hours of battery life before having to plug the adapter back in?

I'm on Win10 but I believe Thinkvantage, or Lenovo Power Manager has a tool that allows you to "reset battery statistics" or something like that. Might be what you're looking for.

It also gives info on how much battery capacity is remaining. Pic related. I have 83/93Wh total capacity remaining. Pretty good for a 5 year old battery.

Probably buy a new battery if your total capacity is less than half the design capacity.

I had a 9cell battery ordered from germany for 35€.
X200 from GB for 76€
Charger from Spain for 5€
Shippings sums up to about 30€

Did I fuck up /tpg/?
>>
>>56271086
did you try looking locally?
Every european country has their own version of a craigslist like website.
I looked at the one for my country and it had a lot of listings for x220, x200, x230. Turned out this seller also had a shop in my city so I could go in there and look at it in person. Walked in with my money, was able to choose from a selection of x220, which one had no cracks etc, could confirm it wasn't locked down and walked out a happy man. Even got a free dock and 3 month store warranty out of it.
>>
>>56261362
Yes, you bought the wrong series. If you're using X and T series for gaming, you're doing it wrong. There are some t-series with dedicated GPUs, but it's mostly the W series that has that.

Basically: Look for any laptops with dedicated GPUs nowadays. Anything else is a garbage shitshow.

Getting MAME and even FS-UAE to run on my X201 Tablet is quite a hassle.
>>
>>56271350

Where are you from? I'm from Spain and looking in the typical craiglisty websites i could only find a x200 for 150€. I even looked in cash converters and the like, and nothing. No thinkpads at all.

Inended up buying everything in ebay, blindly. I was going to do so anyway because i wanted to explore libreboot.

Bonus: the charger was from Spain, but the seller only had parts, no complete laptos. And no: they didnt sell enough parts to build a complete x200
