IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

You need raspberry pi, actuvated SPI ports on it and flashrom.
You need programmer clip if you can't desolder bios chip, or if you don't want to fuck up with flashing by connecting wires to each other.

I just pulled the trigger on an x220. I've been looking to do some coding on the go. Getting cabin fever in work. Otherwise I'd have went with the t series.

Rumor in the german TP forum has it, that javi has a new revision of the t420/t430 edp converter board in the pipeline. Seems like he solved the flickering issue. But production will start in the beginnig of sept, after the g20 summit.
>>
>>56209599
Graphics performance is mainly do to the dGPU and iGPU showing their respective ages. Wifi strength is an anomoly - never had any issues with that on my machine.
Get a T530 if you want a quad i7 machine
>>
>>56209607
If this is really the case, I may end up getting a nice 1080p screen for my T420 rather than getting a newer machine. That will greatly boost the longevity of my machine as the shitposting machine of choice.
However, I may end up adding a X230T to my list of toys

Helo guys, just received my t460p, great device so far.

>>
>>56209678
How about
you know
W520 or W530 for their dGPU ?
>>
>>56209767
I don't like to cheap out on batteries. I find that they hold much less charge and they get wonky at lower percentages. It isn't uncommon to see a cheap battery drop immediately from 10% to 0%.

SSDs vary. You'll just need to do your research, I'm afraid. ;_;
>>
>>56208002
eGPUs have might have low reliability because of the various connections between the card and the laptop.

On eGPU adapters such as EXP GDC there are two discrete connection points between the card and the laptop, and when either one of them gets loose, the card drops out entirely, and you have to restart the game, assuming you haven't already BSoD'd.

On PE4C 3.0 there is only one, so the probability of crashing is lower.
>>
>>56209800
Oh that is too real. I've even had that happen at around 30%. The fucking worse is that it ends up shutting down instead of hibernating.
>>
>>56209771
Aren't they significantly more expensive? I would get one myself, but it's fucking hard to find a cheap one with the FullHD panel and the 2GB dGPU
>>
>>56208002
>>56209866
That said, it seems very few people have complained about eGPU instability. Perhaps it is just me, or everyone else has it too but doesn't like talking about it

t. X220 w/ gtx580 via expresscard
>>
>>56209914
So are you saying it's shit or is it worth it?
>>
>>56209969
I'm only telling you my personal experience.

Ultimately it's a decision you have you make on your own.

I'm not Austin Evans - I won't make an essay titled "Is an eGPU worth it?".

Read on others' experiences if you want to make a more informed decision. The Tech|Inferno forums' eGPU board is your best resource atm.
>>
>>56208026
Can't complain though, I got it for real cheap plus seller said battery wasn't tested.
>>
>>56209893
>Aren't they significantly more expensive?
Yes. But they're also significantly more powerful.

The Quadro K1000M you'll find in most of them is apparently equivalent to a 640M. Not sure about the higher-end K2000M, but you can look that up yourself.

Dell Precision models are probably worth looking into too, specced and priced roughly the same as equivalent Thinkpads.
>>
Where do thinkpads end up on the cycle of new hardware? I recently saw nvidia release a new line of laptop gpus and am wondering when such things would show up in thinkpads -- even new ones.

What is the best currently supported Thinkpad that Lenovo has on their website?
>>
>>56206647
Is the T400s recommended? I'm looking for an intro into Thinkpads and I like the form factor.

I know about the 1.8" hard drives, I would just use a mSATA to 1.8" adapter for an SSD.

I know it's not the newest in terms of spec, but I'm limited by availability (third world) and how much I want to spend.
>>
>>56210327
Lenovo will probably jew you on their website. The T440, maybe.
>>
>>56210327
The one you can afford while meeting your desires/requirements.

Do you want a mobile workstation with a fuckload of horsepower and don't care about price or weight/size ? P70 is your nigga.
Do you want a thin and light ? X1 or an s-suffix model is your nigga.

As long as you don't go for the cheap budget E-series or whatever they're called these days. T, W, X, or P only.
>>
I'm thinking about dropping $250-300 on a Thinkpad X230. Thing is, I don't really need a laptop but the consumer whore inside me wants it so badly.

All I'd be doing is typing, browsing and using Lightroom, and there are ample computers all over campus.

Are there any real reasons to get a laptop?

The power difference is not really significant enough to be worth the W series premium. You would want to get one mainly for the quad core and the beautiful screens.

I'd say it probably depends on what you think of as light gaming, but mostly I think it should be able to handle it.

That said, I haven't personally seen a K2000M in action, and I haven't seen any really detailed benchmarks of it. But given that I've had plenty of success running (the old) Killing Floor on my T520 with only the Intel HD 3000 iGPU, I'm fairly certain that the K2000M can handle light games, such as CS:GO, DOTA, LoL, and what have you to an acceptable (60fps, maybe low settings) degree.

I was hoping to push my luck and try to force a heavier fighting game down the dGPU's throat. Or perhaps play a bit of No Shill's Sky and get a feel for it. I know that for the game I really want (Elite: Dangerous) I'll need to actually dedicate time and money into a decent rig, but a full time job gets in the way of such flights of fancy.

Anyways, Hawken is probably the most intense thing I play, and the QUADRO on my Blazeit seems to handle it (if only just)

Essentially, make the battery auth one the only valid .patch file in the folder between steps 6 and 7, IIRC.

You never know. I got an X230 with a genuine X220 battery, so I was in the same situation. I bought a new battery anyway and the EC flash came to my attention sometime later. After flashing, it charged my x220 battery and it was 90%+. I had expected it to be fubar since it'd been completely discharged and stuffed in a drawer for a year but it bounced back. Credit to genuine batteries.

Why are chinkpads so shit holy fuck?
So I've got a cheap 1st gen Helix after using X61 tablet all day every day for years (also using T61 frankenpad and many other ThinkPads in the past)
Keyboard dock connector is like half actual windows dock api half "fuck it we plug and play now", at any time when I dock or undock it keyboard, mouse and/or charger may fail to notice that and it would require a random amount of reconnects and reboots to fix, shit happens especially often when connecting during sleep.
3.5 input fails to detect headset mic and/or requires some weird-ass high impendance headset or something.
Apparently all that is common "yeah we know about it" issues, present on multiple chinkpads.
Also base unit USB ports position is full retard, you have to reconnect all usb devices when going from tablet to laptop mode.
Adding to that shit keyboard (best of its class they said, very comfortable to type they said, who needs 7th row they said) I am very very disappointed.
Is there really no device that's a true upgrade to X61t with decent screen resolution?

I posted this about a week ago but need more confirmation that I am a smart consumer.

I bought a t510 that I will use for grad school with the following specs.

-i7 620M

-8GB DDR3 @ 533 mhz

-Nvidia NVS 3100M w/ 512mb vram

-500gb HDD (Adding 240gb SSD soon)

I will be running the following programs, most likely concurrently

-MySQL Server

-MySQL Workbench

-Tableau

-Pentaho Kettle ETL

-SQL Server Express/SQL Server

-SQL Server Database (AdventureWorks OLTP and DW)

The schools website said I should have an i7, 16gb ram (lol), and a 1gb graphics card.

Plz tell me I will be okay and not have to buy a w520.

Thank you /g/.

Should I:

or
> get a piece of shit random laptop from the store with 2/3 years warranty for the same budget
or

I'm buying the laptop online and I can't check it in person with the seller. I also need the battery to last more than 2 hours.

buy a used thinkpad without a warranty
unless you are an absolute idiot you don't need a warranty on a good computer

T420 or T520 if not just for more screen realestate. The X220 is stuck at 720p without some odd modding, while the T420 can be 900p and T520 at 1080p. All 3 are able to last over 2 hours(lol?) X220 runs a little hotter, specifically i7 version.

Sounds like I'm making the X series sound bad, it's really not. If the resolutions doesn't bother you, and would prefer the smaller form factor, i'd say go for it.
>>

I bought a T530 and I'm very happy with it. As long as get a good price, then I'm sure you'll be happy. They're also very easy to service. a consumer laptop with warranty often needs to be sent in, and then you're stuck without a computer for anything between a few days to a month.

Hey /tpg/, how much of an improvement was Sandy Bridge over Arrandale? I have an opportunity to buy a 1600x900 T410 with the i5-540M for 120 Canadabux, while the T420 units on eBay all seem to be going for around $200. Should I take the display resolution into consideration when buying a T420? Is 1600x900 much better than 1366x768 or doesn't it even matter?
>>
>>56214046
It depends on the screen size.
At 12 inches or less, it's fine, at 15 inches it's basically unusable.
>>
>>56214065
*1366x768 at 15.6 inches is practically unusable.

It IS much better but the viewing angles are still crap.

Anyway the original screen doesn't matter that much since it's piss easy to upgrade the screen and you can resell the 768p meme screen easily because everything is 768p.

I just want a trustworthy laptop for uni when I start it, but it also has to be able to handle my own projects.

The LPR systems running at the company I work for supposedly require a quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM minimum

Those "minimum requirements" are usually full load balls to the wall bullshit

Not too sure on backlit keyboards, but T6x era keyboards can be washed or bathed in a sink.

Just give it a two days to dry up, or one day and blow dry it the day of and right before inserting it.

I want an ultra portable laptop with a good screen. I'd purchase an X230, but I'd like more than 1366x768; even with the IPS option I'd prefer more. How are you liking it? Seriously considering a move to the Elitebook after all the shit Lenovo has done to the Thinkpad.

>I thought all 1600x900 t420s had nvidia
I just looked it up, all T420s have either an Nvidia or Intel graphic chip. I'm gonna go for it though
>>
>>56229109
if it's nvidia only just remember that it takes a different bios
and like all of the white listed bioses for wifi cards are for the nvidia
but I have one that worked with my hd 3000 only t420 so I could send it to you or put it up somewhere if somebody wants it
>>
Is it worth buying the T460 because of its battery life?

yes

Yes, investigate how truly minor those scratches are though - that's a steal.
>>
>>56229593

If you want insane battery life, the x260 is the way to go. However it's rarely worth it to but new, only reason is to get full use out of the warrenty. Most people only buy new because they can write it off as cost of buisness, not personal use. Buy a used 50 series if you want something newer. If it must be 60 just wait a few months, 70 series shouldn't be too long from now, and you might be able to get one used.

x30 and up

Runs like shit on low with the hd3000, maybe the nvidia dgpu t420 works better but dunno if at playable level.

I'd get an x220 + egGPU though

Is $310 a decent price for a t530 with a i5-3320M and 900px screen? Only has a small crack in the palm rest, but it's fully working.

Other specs: 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD + Win7

Is the W530 much of an upgrade over the W520?

Would I notice much if both had the same screen, and I replaced the W530 keyboard with one from an xx20 model? It seems that the W520 is half the price of the W530 on ebay. Is it worth it?
>>
>>56231397
I don't know the answer but I was in your position 2 weeks ago and went with the W520. No ragrets.
>>
>>56231532
Very nice, I will probably do the same thing to be honest. I don't think the W530 is worth it, and I would have to upgrade(...downgrade?) the keyboard, which would mean that some of the keys would not work.

I think that upgrading the screen would be a much better option, and it doesn't cost that much for 1080p.
>>
>>56231666
I don't mind the chiclets so much anymore. The T530 grew on me. You might not need to do the upgrade. I think I saw some FHD ones up there. Ave Satanas.

Today I received the replacement battery I ordered for my X220T. On eBay it was listed as "brand new genuine Lenovo", and it wasn't cheap enough to be suspicious, but when I received it a few things didn't seem completely right.

At first glance I immediately noticed that the labels with all the information were obviously cut by hand (and rather clumsily at that), and weren't consistently glued to the plastic. It didn't come in a Lenovo box btw, but I figured that was possible.

When I plugged it in and checked Lenovo's battery management thing I also noticed a few discrepancies. The label on the battery says it was made by Sanyo, while the battery tool says LGC. The FRU and bar code numbers don't match either.

Pic related.

Also I could've sworn the cycle count was 190 for a full minute after I plugged it in, to then change to 5, but that could just have been a glitch or something.

The seller on eBay was a40m. He has a 99.9% rating and 1700 positive feedback in the last year so I figured he'd be trustworthy. When looking at the listing again, I also notice the battery in the picture looks a bit different from the one I received (and exactly like my original battery).

So, am I being paranoid and are these things perfectly normal for some Lenovo batteries, or is this indeed a fake? I know both LGC and Sanyo make genuine batteries for Lenovo, so I'm not sure.
>>
>>56231732
Yeah, some FHD ones on ebay now, but the asking price is 500-1000. I think it's probably better to get the w520 and just buy the $80 FHD display and upgrade it myself.

What are some Thinkpads?
>>
>>56231885
I bought one of those but for my T420, let me guess it's says "enother" instead of "another" on the label.

None of the serials matched just like yours and lenovo power manager gives me a capacity of 50Wh, However it lasts for like 10 hours idling and 5-6 hrs approx watching movies which looks legit for a 9 cell and the only issue i've seen is that gets stuck at 100% for a long ass time either charging or discharging so my guess is that it's a legit made battery but they flashed a generic firmware or something on it which reports wrong capacity, serial and everything.

I still opened a dispute and got a refund of half what i paid since it wasn't original at all but the battery itself works just fine.

My T430 has very low sond volume on linux, but on windows it boosts a decent level, what can I do?
>>
>>56227702
What's wrong with 12.5?

>>56229103
There's only one real reason to choose the X220/230 over the 2560/2570p and that's the IPS panel.
If your choice is TN vs TN get the EliteBook, if you can do without USB3 and the 3rd gen Core i CPU then get the 2560p, it's the same thing but with classic screen locking mechanism instead of magnets.

Comparing it to the X220 since this is what I have most experience with
X220 has the better keyboard, but the Elitebooks isn't bad
X220 is slightly quieter under load, but even the Elitebook doesn't spin up its fan when you're just shitposting either
X220 is slightly thinner
EB has better build quality, and you can get to the guts via a single sliding door
EB has an optical drive X220 doesn't, you can replace it with a 2.5 caddy and even configure the two disks in RAID 0
EB takes 9mm HDDs
EB has better sound quality from the built in speakers, possibly even from the audio jack
EB has glass touchpad which is very nice to use, X220-s touchpad is only there for people who can't use the trackpoint
2570p has an issue where Aggressive Link Power Management is disabled leading to higher than it would be otherwise idle power consumption.
I've managed to get mine down to about 5.5 watts, and 7 when watching a youtube video in Edge.
These Elitebooks are kind of like a cross between a thinkpad and a macbook.

Why cant I find a size comparison picture of the t4y0 with the x2y0

Someone posted a ThinkPad on a local Craigslist, a W510 for $350. Specs are below:

Windows 7 64bit OS
Intel Core i7 CPU (Q720 @ 1.60GHz)
16 GB Memory
Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD
NVidia Quadro FX 880M Graphics Card (1600x900 resolution)
TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF Advanced Mode)
Integrated Camera
CDRW - DVD Multi Burner
Intel Gigabit Network Connection
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN Wireless Card
SD card slot
TPM (Trusted Platform Module)
Conexant SmartAudio HD
New 9 cell battery with cycle count @ 79
Docking station
(2) 135w power supplies

I've been on the lookout for a W520, but I live in a pretty remote area and this is the first time I've seen a ThinkPad on the local Craigslist this good. Does anything else think this is a good pickup? I'll probably get some SSDs and a FHD for it. I'll be using Slackware as my distro.

If anything the quality should be the same.
Plus you can swap to IPS FHD without any issues, unlike the base T440.

>>56208025
Thats why you should of bought a MacBook.

>>56208186
Tough say.
I kinda like my X61T but it has a sort of glitter or glazing effect on it because of the glue it uses.
if it has a SXGA+ X60T swapped in, yeah, get it.
Mine started getting bubbles after 4 months of having it, its very noticable nowdays, dont have a photo of it sadly.

>>56208628
T440p
T/W540 may have some issues when it comes to upgrading displays, you might need a new lid/hinge/bezel for them, because some screens are 15.4 or 15.6" I think.
