IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Looking at this by the way. Again, just wondering if I can 1-1 it with my current x201 LED display without issue. I see people online saying it works fine, but I really just want to be certain.

Also, anyone know if it's even worth it over the stock?

Just do the battery authorization bypass EC flash. Then you can get whatever you want, genuine x220/x230 batteries or chinashit.

>>56130774
I don't think i can without a specific controller from the x200 and swapping 'em out. I think I just won't do it, the LED display I currently have is in perfect condition and works great, just lacks some color quality (Though, I always have it on its lowest brightness setting anyway, might make it look shittier).

Unless anyone knows an exact method of doing this, and a list of parts or something, and it isn't super expensive, I may plan on doing it. Thanks if you can help!

so i have a weird issue i never encountered before with my t430.
my thinkpad is running win7 and linux mint in dualboot and that since like 4 years everythings fine and i never had any problems till now.
the issue is i cannot seem to boot any other linux distro from usb anymore.
not fully anyways.

i can get past grub but then the log tells me it fails to mount things, cant get into the actual tty and seems to suddenly loos track of the usb device.

i have tried different usb sticks and ports on my thinkpda its always the same.
i have half a mind to take my drivecage out and put in the old dvd drive just to confirm.
the thing is this should not be happening.
my thinkpad does not have the secureboot update. as i bought this one on launch and the t430 got the secure boot later at a bios update that i never installed.
my boot options i have never changed though.
from the moment i got this i had set them to uefi/bios both
and legacy first.
and when i installed linux mint i did it over usb too.

send help

If that doesn't work, pull your main HDD and/or mSATA. If it still doesn't work after that, it has nothing to do with what's on your local hard drives.

rootkits in the new thinkpads. that isnt saying much though since intel chips in itself are backdoored.

t420 is the last true thinkpad of the T series.
t430 is the hybrid of old features and new features.
everything after that is considered suboptimal. build quality has arguably gone up. modularity is still somewhat decent. prices are horrible though.
aftermarket parts are harder to get for newer models.

also that integrated battery idea is horrible.
just put better batteries for fucks sake.
nowadays we easily can have 5x the capacity of what the t420 had in its batteries for about 30% increases production price compared ot that battery.
not to mention the crazy new lithium hybrid batteries that last forever and dont degrade as much.
>>
>>56131471

>>56132295
Hello anon.
Yes you can get a 900p display for your T420/T420s
When you are upgrading from 720p, you'll have to get a 900p display cable first, otherwise the screen will not work.
I recommend nabbing an M14x screen, its a popular 'mod'.

great screen. i got one for my t430.
it has way better colors than the original t430 screen too.
fonts look amazing on it.
just be sure to get the matte screen not glossy.
>>
>>56134589
well it doesnt actually do much.
it only works on windows too.
what it does i it installs the thinkvantage suite of programms on a fresh install.

also all cpus since the athlon 2 for amd and the core2due for intel have been hardware backdoored.

Its like those cpus that can be remotely activated even when computer is shut down and even if hard disk with OS is removed because chip has another chip inside with its own special OS. There is no stopping them.
>>
>>56134621
>>56134634
If you seriously expect any modern hardware to not have backdoors, you must be delusional.
There's no point trying to "hide" from anyone if the tracking is embedded within the machine you use. Enough with the tinfoil conspiracies.

>>

Well if you think there are no knowledgeable hackers/electricians that know how to tinker with that stuff to defend themselves than it rly is defeatism.
Its hard to believe that only big companies and gov organizations have skillful people.
Yes resources are big thing but reverse engineering/hacking doesnt cost as much as inventing new stuff from scratch.

A lot of the time the very people that create the technology are the ones that create the countermeasures.

you could get a used x240 and swap the trackpad with the x250s for less than $500.
Or maybe get a used, but lower end x250.
But I'd recommend getting a higher end x240 and doing the trackpad swap.

if you do care you can get a de whitelisted bios and then install any wireless card you want.

newer cpu and ddr3 ram
also I think the t61 is limited to 4 gigs of ram, while the t400 should be limited to 8
>>56135560
I figured, if there aren't any then I'd assume it's because the bios isnt whitelisted.
>>
>>56135577
But the T61 also uses Penryn CPUs and leave it to use 8GB RAM DDR3 too.
>>
>>56135589
the t61s ive seen use 2nd gen core 2's and ddr2 ram
and all of the t400s use 3rd gen core 2s and ddr3
also all t400s are widescreen, and I think that some t61s where still 4:3
also this one on amazon seems to use an ide drive. but the listing is probably wrong or something because I doubt t61s would use ide.
keep in mind that i'm by no means an older thinkpad genius. I've only owned a t40, t410, x201, t420, x220 and w520
>>

Don't know if my charger is busted or if its the battery.
How do if its the charger or the battery?
When I plug it in, I heard some sort of indicator that it was charging, however it was discharging instead.
Now that I can't turn it on, I get a flashing orange light on the battery sign. When I plug it in, it flashes yellow, and then goes back to orange.
Still won't turn on

also is there a way to get just a few new keycaps? fghj are in really bad condition compared to the rest of the keyboard, but everything else is perfect.

>>
>>56135807
What's the button trick
>>
>>56135839
The power button light was on, but the screen wasn't.
I tried turning it off, but when I did, there was some noise coming from my laptop. Turned it on again and it stopped
>>
>>56135839
>remove AC and batt
>push power button in 1 sec intervals 10 times
>on 10th, hold for 30 sec
>replace batt and AC
>press power button normally
If it doesn't work the first time, try it again. If that even doesn't work, leave AC and batt off laptop overnight and try again the next morning. I've had a T60 I thought was dead several times over be revived this way.

>>56135849
Try the button trick anyway, but if that's the case, could be your backlight or the inverter went out. What model are we talking about here? Might even be your display cable came unplugged, but that's usually preceded by weird lines thru the screen, etc beforehand. I take it you didn't drop it directly before it stopped working?

>>56135835
If international, probably aliexpress.
If murrica, probably amazon or ebay.
>>
>>56135896
I have a w520 model. It was working but the battery just died. Didn't drop it at all. When I tried charging it before it turned off, it wasn't charging

Heh.
Mmmmm... I mean the T400 is a fair machine still, X200 will just not benefit from the better heatsink.

I still use my X61T, at least you have cheaper DDR3 RAM on the X200, graphics do make a difference on em, though I would have to get a Broadcom CrystalHD to help play video better if I want.

Those power supply units are not that powerful and they def do not have a 6 pin power adapter.
I have a few at work, I don't know what PSU is on the standard sized unit...

I just sold two desktops with an i7-2600, they both cost only $30 to $50 more than buying the processor alone... Just know that you'll have to get a new PSU if you want to put a video card in there, thats why gaming PCs cost a bit more.

For a US buyer, there's literally no reason to buy a widescreen T61. If you aren't hard up for the last 4:3 screen model, there's no reason not to choose the T400.

If you're an international buyer and the pickins are slim and you don't care about having more than 4GB of RAM, I could see somebody buying a cheap widescreen T61.

>>56136386
I might not care about having 4GB RAM, specially when i have plenty of DDR2 RAM around, but i do care about SATA1.

>>
>>56136680
Ah, fair enough.

Get a 9-cell something regardless. You're going to need it for an older C2D like that. Even Penryn isn't very power efficient. Also, I know I'm probably the only person to shill for undervolting here, but it's a huge advantage for C2D processors. Figure 20C+ cooler and about 25% more battery life. Shit was unreal when applied to my T601F.

Windows: RMClock (dead-simple)
Linux: PHC (tricky for novices but doable)

battery copypasta:

>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats (charged vs original design capacity, cycle count) so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

How come my display looks unclear?

My old laptop has lower resolution than my W520. How do I make everything more clear?

I have a spare HD7770 sitting around that can output 4K, and should pair fairly well with the i5-2540m.

do you actually need a touch screen for work?
battery life is slightly worse on the x220t vs normal x220 (since the hinge sticks through the middle of the battery) and it also weighs a bit more and is slightly longer
and it also tends to run a decent amount hotter than the x220 (but still reasonable temps)
It also usually costs about $100 more than an x220, but prices might have come down since a 1-2 years ago.

The main concerns come about due to the rubber tabs on the sides (keeping the machine from being twisted open while closed) having a tendency to break off. And once that happens, the keyboard has a tendency to make markings on the display. Not massive issues but potential irritations nonetheless
Beyond that, I'd installing a device in the expresscard slot if you push hard on the palmrest because the plastic can crack

Construction wise it does a fine job. The hinge does put massive stresses on the chassis but it should still do well for at least 3 years and it is strong enough that you can pick up the machine by the display

>>
So I bought L440 with i7-4712MQ ...
Am I doing it right?
>>
Have you seen a Thinkpad for sale somewhere that was so damaged that you wondered what happened to it?
>>
>>56147564
Do you have a reason to? Do it.
You want to update it just for the sake of it? Don't, there's a chance you might brick it in the process.
>>
>>56130774
Definitely don't buy that one, they blurred out the labels on the back of the panel, they called it a "substitute" and later in the description they explicitly say it's not an AFFS panel so it's probably something completely different with the same connector.

I did the AFFS mod to my X200 a year ago, I bought the entire top screen assembly from a gateway E-155C tablet and pulled the screen out of that. I had to remove the touch screen digitizer which is a lot of careful work with an X-Acto knife and the panel underneath was glossy.

Colors, viewing angles, and contrast are all much improved so I think it was worth the $30 I paid for the screen assembly, but I don't use my X200 very much any more because it can't keep up with internet video (Twitch).

The source I bought the screen assembly from doesn't seem to have any more to sell though, and there have been a few people on here who have bought Boe-Hydis "compatible" screens that didn't work and burned the LCD connector.

You could try just buying a whole Gateway E-155c, they're not that expensive.
>>
>>56145450
I tightened the ones on the bottom (since there arent any on the back), but it didn't seem to help
>>
Any issues with Linux compatibility in the x230?
>>
Is there a way to replace the thinkpad x220's keyboard with the t430's keyboard? I plan on buying a x220 in the future and if I could, replace the keyboard.
>>
>>56148857
Why don't you just buy a extra x220 keyboard and swap em. They're under $30 on eBay
>>
>>56148805
intel wireless might need a proprietary driver, but that's about it
>>56148857
you... want the t430s keyboard on an x220?
why?
just buy an x230 for slightly more so you get all the benefits of ivy bridge, and the weird keyboard.
or just buy a new keyboard for like $30 on amazon or ebay

how much of a performance drop is there compared to using the dedicated gpu in a desktop? Does it depend solely upon the cpu?

Hey,

I'm dropping by /g/ to ask a stupid fucking question. Just got a x230 to replace my dead HP laptop. The HP has a better, 500gb HDD with all my old shit I didn't backup on it. Has windows 10 just like the x230, etc. Can I simply swap the hard drives to dump my files onto a portable? Or am I gonna have a hard time.

Thanks, family
>>
>>56148929
not that guy, but with egpu setups it's usually like 1/2 to 3/4 the performance of a desktop.
the combination of the pcie 2.0 1x speeds, and the weaker cpu (especially if you have a dualcore) can really hurt your performance in games.
>>56148947
you can usually swap them and then just check device manager for any missing updates.
but there is a chance that hal will say no and you will end up stuck in an infinite boot loop.
also remember that the x230 only likes 7mm drives, so if your hp had a 9mm one it's going to be tough getting the drive in, and almost impossible to get it out.
>>
>>56148767
And that'd all come with a compatible converter and stuff? Sounds like a good plan, I'll look into it. Thanks for the word!
>>
Want to get my first Thinkpad. Thinking T420 or T430. Gonna do some light gaming and light video editing on it. What do you think /g/?
>>
>>56148947
you'll lose the windows 10 license, if you did the free upgrade. Other than that, it should just werk.
>>
>>56149132
I bought a T430 and I'm very happy with it. In the next couple of months I think I'll buy a T420 for my wife.
>>
>>56149132
No you aren't.

T420 is a 6 year old machine with integrated graphics, modern video editing and even light gaming are going to grind to a halt. Maybe try a W5XX with discrete graphics for your purposes.
>>
>>56149132

The t430 has better integrated graphics and cpu if you want better performance. Although general consesus is that the keyboard is worse. If you dont mind the keyboard and paying more, I reccomend getting the t430.
>>
>>56149188
There are T420 and T430 models with dGPU. Educate yourself.
>>
>>56149132
t430 by far
make sure you get one with the dgpu, because hd 4000 can only take you so far.
then ideally do the bios mod to use a t420s keyboard in your t430
>>
Do you guys ever wonder about your baby's life before you two met? What if a poo in the loo used it?
>>
>>56147778
If it's a high volume seller with good feedback and they at least show it boots to BIOS, go for it. You're still rolling the dice a little bit but if it's cheap it's not a big loss.
>>
I need a new laptop and know a guy who will sell me a perfect condition X220 for like $115. I'm not asking if that's a good deal. I'm picking it up tomorrow. What I want to know is how common IPS replacement panels are, and how difficult they are to put on? Anything I should know or look out for? Thanks.
>>
Any better panels out there that will fit into a T410?
I love this laptop but the screen is cancer, and 16:10, while beautiful, is making finding a better panel hard as fuck
>>
>>56149188
My T420 with Intel only graphics runs everything that isn't brand new on medium/low with 60+ fps, you're buying into GPU marketing far too much.
>>
>>56148929
It feels the same really, even if it's bottlenecked to pci-e x1 speeds.

I don't play demanding games though or else i would've gotten a better card.
>>
I just want a good quadcore and a nice colorscreen

Not him but, what is wrong with replacing a used keyboard with a new one?

>>
>>56154344
Nothing wrong with that but i don't see why would you need a replacement if it's not broken/worn to shit and he didn't mention it was.

And even if it was broken/worn why would someone ask? just do it.
>>
So if I'm set on getting an X-series with FHD and a decent keyboard and TrackPoint, then I'd be better getting an X240 and replacing the keyboard and TrackPoint than trying to replace the display on an X230, right?
>>
>>56152913
Easiest fix is probably to get a replacement part on ebay or whatever and replace the broken one. Soldering and shit.
Or you can try and glue the part thats fallen off back into place. No idea if that is even an option in your case.
The workaround is, as you stated yourself, to just use other ports.

did they just kinda find out that that panel was exactly the same as the glossy one or something so they list it as compatible?

>>
I just bought a used t420. Came with a 320 HDD that I run some test installing debian without problems. Now upgrade with samsung SSD pro and the fan won´t stop.
>>
>>56156906
are you constantly loading things?
expect higher cpu usage with an ssd whenever loading big files because your cpu has to process more at once.
it also means that your cpu will be turbo boosting just for a file transfer because turbo boost is fucking retarded. which means that you will have significantly higher temps
>>
>>56149159
Oh shit. Anyway to recoup that from an image?
>>
>>56156924
No, fresh debian install, first run and the fun won´t stop. CPU 0% and RAM <3% use.
Just conect the old hdd and the fun don´t even start when I load some heavy programs.
The temperature when ssd is connected, everything under ram and touchpad is way hotter than the laptop sides.
Do you have any idea what is happening? I understood that ssd was a good upgrade for heat issues.

>>
>>56157429
Ill write a few down in a few hours

>>56157441
Its profitable as long as you dont work for a dodgy bloke like I did. Shady as fuck, got paid like shit.

As for tips, grab the ram and windows codes off of the bottom of any shit you cant repair. Keep a small pile of machines for spare parts but dont let it run out of control. Stay away from any Apple products. Keep flash of the drivers any model is typically missing. Especially keep backups of ethernet and wireless card drivers. Always take a photo of the machine before you send it out and keep them well filed to protect yourself
>>
>>56157571
Keep flash drives*
>>
>>56157571
Perfect advice, and I am glad to say I already have a lot of that in place. I should definitely start filing things.
How did you guys resell them? Were you a retail store, or did you use listings?
>>
>>56157628
We had our own website. Shit that was too bad but still sellable went on ebay.

Oh, another thing, dont waste time. If you get some shitty netbook in with a broken screen and keyboard, toss it into the trash. Dont start doing massive jobs unless you are sure you can charge enough to warrant your time. If you repair a netbook in two hours and charge $100 for it, you could have spent that time repairing at least two better condition thinkpads that you could sell for $150 each. You basically lost $200. Time management is key
>>
>>56157689
I think, for the sake of quality and ease of work, I will only repair enterprise laptops; they really do seem to be the only ones worth any time, and they typically have some pretty cheap parts for repair. Other laptops are pretty iffy and not up to snuff for resale.
I am definitely taking that second paragraph to heart; I have three thinkpads sitting around, waiting for touchscreen replacements (I cheaped out instead of just buying the full FRU).
