Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Have you ever been bullied for programming on a Thinkpad?

What's the reason for preferring older models over newer models? Won't the performance be worse?

Bullied =/= Unable to banter

It's a matter of price/performance ratio. CPUs haven't evolved in a significant way, so older models still perform very well and are way cheaper.

Yes but they're built like tanks if you go back far enough. Not everybody has performance-oriented mobile computing needs and most people have a desktop for serious work already.

Recently bought a Panasonic Let's Note CF-R8 from Yahoo Auctions via a proxy service recently and thought I'd share my impressions.

The keyboard is a little tougher than my X230's, but not irritatingly so. The japanese layout might take time to get used to, though, since it has a ton of new keys and everything is a lot more squashed together. Battery life is rather similar to the X230's, which came as quite a surprise.

Maintenance is a real hassle. There's the fact that all the guides and forums are in Japanese, of course, but the interior is also a bit weird. Unlike other laptops I've opened up, instead of having the heatsink connected and leading directly to the fan it has two thin pieces of metal-on-plastic, one for each side of the motherboard, that is literally just stuck on both sides of the CPU; I think it's mainly just held there by the sheer tightness of the screws. It's possible that the new models aren't like this, though. There're also quite a few seals that'll have to be removed to access the connectors and cables, but that's probably just for waterproofing.
>>
>>56111880
I'd assume black bricks have more resale potential as there are always spergs looking for them, numales on the other hand prefer to buy their fix new from 'hip' places... Then again, I'm no nigger and might be over thinking this

I was thinking of making a new thread for this, but kinda though it was unnecessary and was hoping you thinkpad bros could help me with this one.

My local craigslist has a Dell Latitude E7440 for sale for $380 with the following specs:

4th gen i7 2.7ghz
500gb SSD
16 GB RAM
14" 1080p IPS display

It has all of the nice things that thinkpads have like a trackpoint, robust build and a backlit keyboard etc, only thing it is missing is the fingerprint reader, which isn't even important for me anyways.

Should I do it?

At least Lenovo updated the UEFI on the t420 to stop interfering with the disk if it failed to detected a Windows or RHEL string.

My Lenovo b575 garbage laptop writes a 128mb partition to the disk and fucks up any OS you install to disk using EFI.

The only way it's even usable is installing MBR (most OS installers don't even give you that option now so you have to figure out a workaround for each one).

and I would use it to watch my nerd anime and play some videogames that are not very demanding (emulating ps1, the new touhous...) with a conected controller on windows 7. The purpose is to carry it with me on trips to replace for a bit my desktop computer

Except it doesn't beat anything. Do you enjoy disabling postprocessing and shadows in all gaymes because of insufficient memory bandwidth?
Also your eGPU is not even remotely mobile, while I can gaym on my T430 while being in a car, on a beach, in my work. Anywhere.
Also streaming server >>>>> eGPU
Just take a desktop computer, install steam on it, hide it somewhere and use the streaming feature to gaym on your x230 anywhere you are in your house.

The Dell 7000 series is somewhat like the X1 carbon series I think, but a bit thicker. I have no experience with the Dell keyboard, but it is a business class notebook, so I'm guessing it is at the very least halfway decent.

Maybe that's because you're reading it wrong.
If you don't need much mobility then at least invest in streaming server, so you can actually move your laptop between rooms INSIDE your house.
If you want to gaym outside your house then just get a T430. Mine can handle GTA V at 1600x900 and everything set to high at 30fps. What more do you want?

Not the other anon, but I happen to have an X230 with an eGPU (pic related, heavy temps because I'm working).
The only games I've ever encountered bandwidth limitations were GTAV and Wolfenstein The New Order.

In both of them I can play at high settings with little latency and with comfortable FPS (40+).

TrackPoint automatically calibrates every second or so to avoid constantly moving due to bending or badly aligned cap.

It's pretty easy to trigger this by applying a steady force to the clit. The cursor should move steadily and then just stop after a second or so. When you release the cursor will move to opposite direction for a short while and stop.

Not sure if this is a thing for the Windows driver.

I like the 6 GB of ram, the bluetooth, the fingerprint reader and Webcam.
Seems solid to me, but I would like your opinions.

I have a T410 and I like it very much but it could be a bit newer and faster. Should I go find a T430 which has newer parts and should feel faster at least in theory?

Are there any bad sides about T430 which make it objectively worse than T410? I am aware that the keyboard has changed but maybe I can get used to that. I haven't tried it yet though. Is there anything I'm getting that I'm now missing?

Not really, but if you don't need the tablet you might as well leave it there for someone who does.

And, doesn't it scare you that there might not be enough of them to meet the demand for that long?

T430 will benefit you with USB 3.0, better battery life, HD 4000 graphics can play low end games good, you could drop a quadcore in them now too if you get a unit with a 90W AC adapter.
However, 16:9 aspect ratio, not being able to use 3rd party batteries and yeah the keyboard layout.

>nvs 4200m is a lot faster than hd3000
It's not, it can definitively beat the HD3000 on a few games and on old games at the lowest settings, on all the other games the difference is less than 10 FPS
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-NVS-4200M.47343.0.html
Both of them are thrash anyways, the only reason to want a Nvidia T420 is if you really want to stick to Windows, since Intel drivers are ridiculously abysmal on Windows, specially for SB and older hardware
>>
>>56123014
>less than 10 FPS
10FPS makes a lot of difference if a gaym works on 10FPS under hd3000. At 20+ it's actually playable.
I was able to play bf3 at nvs 3100m (t410) while it's absolutely NOT playable on hd3000. 4200m is even faster.

How ridiculously low are your standards? 20 FPS is only playable on games that aren't real time, which is pretty much limited to turn based strategy games
>>56123056
>I owned all four dgpus (nvs 3100, 4200m, 5200m an 5400m) and I know what I'm talking about

>You can't expect cucks from notebookcheck to actually be competent
Notebookcheck is literally the only big laptop reviewing site that isn't completely retarded
>They're literally testing these gaymes on standard bloated images from lenovo
Most of that testing isn't even made on Lenovo laptops, truly shows how much you know when you can't even read the page, though they usually use outdated drivers, but they also use outdated drivers for the Intel benchmarking
gb2youtube and keep watching LinusShillTips and Pewdiepie
>>56123093
>which is exactly how throttling mechanisms works.
A lot of people consider throttling when the CPU goes below it's base clock, not the boost clocks
>there is no such thing. If your laptop consumes more power than provided from psu it just drains power from battery.
There's such thing if your battery isn't charged, since the *60 series and probably before, the models that ship with the 95W brick will throttle heavily when using the 65W brick, they sense whatever wattage the brick has using the signal pin the connectors have, the Thinkwiki has a bit more info on this
Boost clocks are also limited on quad cores when all the cores are under load, iirc the 3.3 Ghz boost on the 2720QM is only applied if a single core is under load

It seems that people around here dont like the x200 because every question about it is pretty much ignored.

You'll find that the x200 is very similar to your x220, except for the trackpad, and the processor: a core 2 duo that you will find nostalgic.
You may want to use a lightweight distro on this one.

I'm thinking of getting one for your same purposes. How is your x220? Is it too heavy? Does it heat too much to have it on the lap? Does it make huge fan noise?

It's much cheaper to get a X230 or T430 than a system76 laptop. Buying a few years old ThinkPad (X/T/W) should be a sure way to get a well supported Linux laptop.

The newest ThinkPads usually have some hiccups since Lenovo likes to mix things around. Fixes usually land in major distros within a year of release for that perfect out-of-the-box experience.

If you find a cheap X200 you should get it just for the libreboot factor alone. Especially if you manage to find X200s with the WXGA+ screen.
>>
>>56123771
If you live in a nordic country you should head to your national auction site or national refurbished laptops stores. Just google the model you want and restrict the results to your language. You can also try googling "X230 used" in your language.

If you want it just for the novelty of it without speaking the language you should just get a ThinkPad from your area and find a nordic replacement keyboard.

/g/, why does a computer slow down over time?

I've had a refurbished t420 for almost a year now, and it's ran great as I would expect it to. But recently, like say the last month or so, it's been lagging doing simple things. Like on video playback, or games loading.

I haven't installed anything that runs in the background, and my games are either through Steam or GoG.

I don't understand what would cause these hiccups in performance. Is it likely I just installed some malware or something?

A used (not refurbished) x230 with 180gb SSD for 320€ is the only thing I could find under 400€ from my country. Is that an okay deal?
>>
>>56124099
>>56124125
Ok I'll try it out. You think it must be related to something using too much cpu or ram then?
>>
>>56124285
Could be, also maybe monitor temps and check if the cpu throttles
>>
>>56124299
ok, I thought it might be temp since I haven't really cleaned it out since I got it. Not that I really could do much aside from using some canned air

Thanks for the tip
>>
>>56124339
I've changed the thermal paste on my t420s, which made at least some difference. It's supposed to be very easy to do on the t420.

can you change cpu on x230 or its soldered? same question for ram

Guys I have a laptop with 0% battery capacity, broken hard drive and it's a HP 620 with a C2D T4500 and 2GB of RAM.

It hasn't been working for a while now and I would need $60 for a new battery, $60 for an SSD and around $25 for 2 GB of RAM since I live in eastern Europe and everything is expensive here.

Is it worth getting it to run for $150 or should I add cash and get a 14.1" T420 with a i5 2520 for around $280.
>>
I have an SSD and 4 GB of RAM for my X220. Works pretty smooth.

Would 8 GB of RAM make a significant difference, or should I just chill out for now?
>>
>>56124144
Seems fair for nordics if it's in good condition and has the layout you want. Hopefully 8GB or more ram and IPS display too.

>>56124406
X230 has soldered CPU and 2 RAM sockets.

>>56124587
For serious usage you want to go to 16GB. I'd consider 4GB unacceptable these days.

Without any use for drawing it ends up being wobblier and bigger version of X230.

>>

>>
are there any board schematics out there for the t420?
>>
>>56112572
I have one, with the i5 processor.

The machine itself is pretty solid, tough. I used it at the uni on a daily basis, then at work using a docking station.
During conference calls / cpu or gpu stressing applications, it tends to get hot (usual Dell syndrome) and very loud. This is the only con that I can bring up. Trackpoint is shit indeed, I don't really use it, but the trackpad is OK.
Cons: tough built, great display, nice support (NBD), good keyboard (compared to the next gen E74xx machines), and it's very light. I like to bring it with myself and really like to use it at home.

Altogether: for 380$, go for it - you'll get a great laptop for the price. Get a docking station as well (PR03X with USB 3.0), and you can be comfy at home.

>>56123792

Dude, I'm about to buy me one with the 1,6 GHz core 2 duo just for that reason, for about 91GBP.

B-but I feel that I don't actually need it. I'd like to give it a use of 4chan and youtube, but i already have a tablet and I feel that x200s is not powerful enough to execute flash.

Also, if i want to use it in freedom, I should use a libre distro, which look horrible, and maybe watching youtube goes against the principles.

I'm in love with the damn thing :(

Sure thing, it's easy. There will be screws marked on the bottom for keyboard removal and there's one little connector for the keyboard underneath. All x230 keyboard layouts will fit in a x230. Sell the UK one on eBay or keep it for a spare or spare keycaps/switches.

hello /tpg/
I want to get a thinkpad for myself after getting one for my nephew, he has the t400 model and it works great for what he uses it for. (Gnome is a terrible DE for it though)

I would like to have an oldschool styled thinkpad (doesnt have to be made by IBM) and be able to run gnome and a little CSGO

what thinkpad should i get and PLEASE dont say the t30

thank you.

I'm tempted on this for my x201, but how bad is the installation? Is it directly compatible, as in I just follow a screen disassembly guide and plug it in like the normal screen?

Also see a few cheaper ones I might try for, they claim to be the same model.
>>
>>56124837
I bought the first gen one. Honestly the keyboard feels just as nice as the X240's.
Gen II's keyboard is just poorly designed.
>>
>>56129107
Maintenance would be the same, but the tablet version is bulkier and doesn't feel as sturdy (flame on)

>>56129175
Trust me, it's super easy. Unless your're doing some crazy high res mod then it's just a matter of replacing the old one. A few screews and a connector.
>>
>>56129312
For certain? The model number is "HV121WX4-120" for the one I'm looking at, I just want to be certain the controller is compatible so I don't get this fucker and end up crying because it's useless.
