IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

K guys, fell for the thinkpad meme, and also for the freedom meme.

Just got myself a Thinkpad x200 with a P8600 for 93€. (That's a yes, according to the buying guide)
I want to see if I can slap libreboot in there.

Now I have to chose a libre distro and change the DE to something that doesn't look like shit (maybe gnome).

Also got the 9-cell battery. Gotta see if it can keep alive during the train travel home. (6h)

Has anyone ever bought from ITrenewdirect on eBay or in general? I'm haggling with offers over one of their Thinkpads, and I think I could get it for a good price, but I've heard mixed things about them, and that even though they have MAR products they've misrepresented product condition or specs in the past. If there's any bullshit I'm protected by eBay buyer protection, right?

I'm strongly considering an X220, but I'm wondering... How loud are these machines? Are the fans always whirring because that's always been something that embarrassed me in class. I've only ever owned shit laptops and the fans would always be loud and almost always be going. So what's the deal with these?

I have an t420 so dunno if it applies to the x220 but in my experience it's pretty silent, even more with an SSD.

The fan can get loud though but it only happens when Turbo Boost kicks in during constant load so for note taking or shitposting it won't be an issue.

Those laptops are designed to be $150 pieces of shit. The T420 is a laptop that was designed to be a $1500 flagship and is now being sold for $150. Quality matters far more than age.

got a t420s which I immediately updated to 8GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD. Everything's working great, but what's the ThinkVantage button supposed to do? There are a few other function keys that don't work either. I'm running dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 10.

The fan gets loud when playing games or HD video but just for web browsing it's usually pretty silent.

My thinkpad's mic is shit. It picks up audio, but it's pretty bad. Tried recording my instrument, and it barely picked it up. Recorded my voice on vocaroo and it sounded bad as well.

>>
>>56165426
unplug ac adapter, take battery off, press on button for 30 secs, plug everything back again, and try to turn it on again.
>>
Let me see if I can explain this:

On my T430 the mute volume led works as expected on linux, but on Win7, if I mess with the volume control in the task bar, the led doesn't pickup on the change. Example: if sound is muted (led on) and I change the volume in the task bar (not using the keyboard volume buttons), the led will remain lit. At this point, if I press the mute key, the led will turn off, but the sound will be muted, and it will remain in a "reversed" state until I do the same thing again (changing the state in the task bar).

Is there anything I can do to get the correct behaviour?

Your loss, fuccboi. Enjoy your shitty thermals and always having to compromise on either resolution or panel quality.

>>56167441
To be fair, it is nearly impossible for any other laptop screen to be worse than the T420's. Its sole redeeming trait is that there are 1600x900 panels. Quality-wise, they aren't any better, but at least you aren't stuck with 1366x768.
>>
>>56166782
stick with the xx20 series if you want something fairly modern, but still muh thinkpad experience ootb.
Personally I'd say go for the t420 wtih dgpu
great battery life with the 9 cell (even with the 4 cell i get 3-4 hours lightly browsing)
great cpu performance
acceptable gpu performance
plus you can throw an ssd and 16 gigs of ram and for pretty much every task but gaming, video rendering and cad it will perform just as well as any modern system.
>>56167492
the screens on the TN macbooks aren't that bad.
the one in my 2012 15" is leagues better than my t420's screen, and pretty much any macbook air has at least a halfway decent screen (even the 11" that's stuck at 1366x768)

Are the T430 and the T430s the same in this regard? Should I look for a T430s instead?
>>
>>56168201
T430s(note the ending 's') is as powerful as the regular T430 but it weighs less and it's slimmer, but you lose battery life due to the height and weight reductions.

If you have enough money, try to get hee i7 variants since they have a Thunderbolt port.

I have an X220. If I do something wrong like, for instance, being in a terminal emulator and pressing backspace at the prompt, it outputs a beep. I've already disabled "error" and other beeps in the BIOS, but it persists.

How do I disable the beeps?
>>
>>56168233
Ya I was planning to get one with an i7, battery life isn't as much of a concern to me as I will be docked or plugged in the majority of the time.

What I meant to ask: is the BIOS chip in the T430 and T430s the same?
>>

Adjust your sensitivity. Try a different trackcap (there are 3 different kinds). Also, disable the trackpad for a week and make yourself learn to use it. There is a small learning curve even accounting for other variables. If you're not convinced by then, it's just not for you. But you'd definitely be in the minority.

First question should always be "what changed?" Start putting shit back like it was one thing at a time and work backwards.

Reseat the RAM. Try putting only the previous RAM stick(s) back in the slots they were in. Take the keyboard back out and make sure the display cable from the mobo to the screen is seated well.

I will take your money but give it back to you to go buy beer for yourself as long as you drink some for me.

I will hang around and help you troubleshoot. Take it one thing at a time and report back.

The Celeron N3050 featured in those is almost as fast as E4300 C2D in everything bar things that use the newest instructions and video decoding
The i5-2520M featured in most T420's it's about four or five times faster than that in any workload
>>
>>56170252
"what changed" - I disassembled the PC, carefully detached all internal connectors, replaced the broken hinges and reassembled

I've tried reseating RAM in both slots

I used compressed air to blow out all the dust around the CPU fan and on the motherboard

I've taken the keyboard out and made sure the display cable is seated well

Thanks kind anon, any more suggestions?

It's a bad mic but at least your voice should sound acceptable
>>56166109
It's fucked, the power delivery and battery charging circuits are somewhat independent of the mainboard on most Thinkpads, so they will charge even if the mobo is fried to death
If there's no POST beep's then it's completely wrecked, even water damaged TP mainboards will beep
>>56166191
They fixed the screens in the *40 series but everything else is ruined
>>
>>56170387
yep I restored the original RAM (tried both sockets) and no change

doesn't beep when I remove all RAM

I disconnected the cmos battery, and now the power LED is constantly on with periodic flickering (even once I reconnected the battery)

fans still don't spin up though (but the CD rom does, i guess this might just mean its getting power though)
>>
>>56166975

That looks like the 95W brick, which means it's an ATi model, which means the motherboard could fail anytime due to flex
tbqh I would buy it just for the brick, I can't seem to find 95W IBM branded bricks
>>
>>56170435
Light staying with periodic flickering on just means it's charging. I would think that the board is getting power, probably why the CD rom works also.

It not beeping when you remove all RAM is a bit odd, it should complain by beeping.

your fan connector and the power-jack-to-mobo connector is plugged in well also, huh? (it would seem the power jack is or otherwise the above wouldn't work) Reseat both of those anyway.

No other flashing lights or beeps?
>>
I bought a GE HDMI to VGA adapter from Walmart today for my T420, and now that I've got it set up and it's not working do I realize that for some reason people what to output HDMI on a VGA monitor.

Is there any way I can reverse it? I'd like to plug the T420 into my TV for VLC.
>>
>>56170540
Return that thing and get a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor instead. DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort are digital signals, and VGA is an analog signal. To have a converter between them means that the signal is converted itself, not just the port. It is also most likely one way. It's much easier to convert from DisplayPort to HDMI.
>>
>>56170519
I meant the power button LED, not the charging LED - i have never seen this flicker before with normal operation

yep, I have not heard a single beep from it since I powered it on again - i think static electricity might have damaged the motherboard when i was repairing it. it's the only thing I can think of. that, or the compressed air did something.

no beeps when I try to power up with the CPU fan disconnected either.

BTW the LCD is not attached, this shouldnt make a difference right?
>>

>>
>>56170614
Power button LED on the keyboard shouldn't flicker. It can bright/dim in regular intervals if the laptop is in hibernation.

>no beeps when I try to power up with the CPU fan disconnected either
I would think that indicates that it's failing at some point before that. Booting to BIOS with "fan error" message exists, so it being plugged in or not shouldn't matter if you're not even getting a BIOS splash screen.

Very, very strange that no RAM modules installed wouldn't generate a beep. I think that's been a pretty standard error beep message for thinkpads for a long time...if that's changed in sandyvagina--> I'm now aware of it.

When you took the hinges out, did you take the screen bezel apart and disconnect the cable going to the power inverter for the screen? I wonder if you plugged in in backwards. I know that in older models it plugs in both ways. Usually a reverse polarity will fry it but not always. If you did, I'd suggest taking the bezel back apart and reversing the polarity on that plug.
>>
will any 16 gig ddr3 sodimm kit work in x220 or is there something i need to look out for?

It hasn't
>>
>>56170735
nope, on the T420 it seems like the LCD data/power inverter connections are on the same plug (which I have reseated on the mobo and reconnected to the LCD)

lol
>sandyvagina

i think the lack of beeps (power-on beeps and RAM missing beeps) is a pretty good indicator that the mobo is fubar

so far we have:
>laptop fully working
>replaced hinges
>laptop not powering on with blinking powerbutton LED
>reseated RAM, removed RAM, same issue with no beep
>reseated all internal connectors, same issue with no beep
>performed static discharge reset, also with CMOS battery removed, same issue

What did you use to encrypt it? I can't think of any method that would make it impossible to recover the data from a device that isn't damaged, it should be recoverable provided you have the password

Yes. The encryption key is not system specific. Since the key is maintained by the drive, it is possible to move the drive to another system still access the data.
afaik such encryption is provided by the SSD, so you should be able to access the data on any system

>>

It's normal for the CPU fan to spin fast when you push air through it
Did you spray any other parts of the mobo? Compressed air cans usually have more things than air, and sometimes such things can be conductive
Prolly the carpet killed it though, never happened to me when working on bedsheets tbqh
>>56171022
Yes as in anything will work, pretty much every LV module will support normal voltages so it doesn't matter which one you get
I don't know if the X220 supports LV modules, if it does it would be ideal to get them

>>
>>56171051
>do you guys recommend upgrading to the thinkpad x220 or should i stick with the elitebook and obviously upgrade the ram?
It seems it's DDR2, so you might be hard pressed to find modules at decent prices, you might find a 4 gb X220 at the price of 4 gb of DDR2, though you can find really cheap ram in dead laptops and from chink sellers
Upgrading it to 8 gb should make it fast enough for pretty much as many 4chan tabs you want, 4 should make it fast enough for anything but heavy compiling and hardcore shitposting

I'm trying to figure out where I need to be in the middle (x200s? x201/00 with IPS?) or further back but still usable (T43p?, x61 with IPS mod?).

What should I set my sights on? No tablet models pls. Personally I think touchshit is a meme.

>Tfw fell for the mac build quality meme

The trackpad randomly developed a dead spot. It can be temporarily fixed by pushing on it really hard, but it's never permanent. Also, it's clicking randomly. No water damage or anything, I just flipped it open one day and apparently something failed. Prior to that, the screen would get graphical artifacts all over. Apple probably doesn't know how to solder worth a damn - or compiling gentoo in a VM caused the shit to melt.
Don't fall for the apple build quality meme. This laptop is only six fucking years old. I have a T40 that's still 100% functional.

Hey guys, so i had my x230 die on me within 2 weeks of buying it on craigslist for $130. I don't have much but i'm willing to give thinkpads a shot again. What should i do?

1. Buy a used mobo ($60~)
(Note: this'll be my first time doing anything like this. Most i've done under there is add an msata)
2. Buy a for parts x220 (>100 + battery and charger)
put in there my ssd then buy a charger and battery for it (unless the x230's charger and battery are compatible?)
3. Buy an x220 that has everything i need ($150-200)
4. Buy a for parts/used x230 again ($180+)
install my own ssd, i've got a charger and everything already
5. Ditch thinkpads for good
>>
>>56172047
Also, is a mobo frying on you a common issue with buying used, especially with laptops? It's the first time this has happened to me.

>>
>>56172314
I assume no beep codes, if so the free service manuals from lenovo have troubleshooting steps for your specific laptop. Try clearing the cmos by removing the backup battery too.

If none of the above works you'll need a multimeter and the motherboard schematics, with it and some help from electronic repairmen forums diagnosing should be easy. Finding the part and replacing it will be the hard part.

Just bought a used X230 for $400. (yes everything here is expensive as fuck). I've got two questions:

1) The battery is loose and wiggles up and down, it seems like this is a common problem. Would a new battery fix this?

2) The battery is at 60% capacity and the screen has a few dead pixels. Do you think its worth it buying a new battery and upgrading the screen to IPS for around $200? (and yes bearing in mind that everything here is expensive as fuck, even the cheapest shit from ebay).

Hello, I am going to buy a new battery for my Thinkpad W520 but according to these reviews [pic 1] it's not very good (It lasts about a year), but it does have a year long warranty. There are 2 places where the battery can be bought: the shop
http://shop.lenovo.com
and the outlet
http://outlet.lenovo.co
. On the shop page for the battery
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?hide_menu_area=true&GroupID=460&Code=0A36303
It lists a year long warranty [pic 2], but on the Outlet page for the battery It doesn't list a warranty. Because of the popularity of Thinkpads here I find it probable that at least one of you have bought a battery from Lenovo so, I have to ask: does the outlet have the warranty as well?

Oh, and I have three minor questions (relative to the main one) that if one of you could answer would be much appreciated.
1. Are the battery’s manufactured by lenovo really the best battery’s for the Thinkpad W520 even though they go bad within a year?
2. Is there a drop in potential cycles (of a unused battery) depending on it's time of manufacturer? For example, will a battery manufactured in 2014 not last as long as a battery manufactured in 2016?
3. Is the 70++ still manufactured today? If not how long has it been sine it was manufactured?

The price in the shop is $160 and the price in the outlet is $96.

Just suck it up and get a genuine 9cell. They should be around $50-$60 on ebay. X200/X201/X200s/X201s all take the same battery, so search all those models to find the best price.

They ruined build quality in the 40 series, and you can replace the keyboard on the 30 series with the one of that in the 20 series. The iGPU is significantly better (63%), and the SoC has much less power usage than Sandy Bridge. Also, Macbooks are complete shit. Kill you'reself if you ever buy one.

Hello /g/uys,

I would guess the bios chip be different, the motherboard is a different shape, battery is located underneath the palmrest on a T430s unlike the back like standard T430 (and other thinkpads). Also the T430s has a soldiered CPU, maybe the BIOS is locked for that... And the T430 has an expresscard port, T430s does not.

My T430s only lasts 2 hours and I think my battery degraded by 60 - 80%, standard intel T430s should last 4+ of normal use.

>>56170114
R40 nothing special, Pentium 4 laptop, but made by Acer.

>>56169435
I sold laptops locally, just meet up at a starbucks table, it won't be weird so long as one of you guys bought a drink or something.
Win7 COA should be underneath the battery, if its WIndows 8, then it would be in bios (press F1 or ThinkVantage Button).
If you have to put in a password... good luck, bios chips cost like $40 if you know how to soldier.

T4x are somewhat cripped by the Pentium M, specially when some distros don't support PAE or whatever, I'll have to download a separate distro for these laptops than AMD/Core Duo clunkers.

Although the IPS models are sought after, that one isn't even a 15" machine sadly, you're probably better off with an X60 or even Z60.

Just spilled some blood on my t450. Had a nosebleed and got maybe 3-4 big drops over the trackpad and keyboard. Left some dried stains on the trackpad.

It's working fine now, and I know they're supposed to be somewhat spill resistant, but would blood maybe be different from water, seeing as blood dries and thickens quite fast. Should I do anything?

Also, what's the best way of wiping the trackpad down without risking doing more damage? I have some wet wipes for glasses with alcohol.
