I have put together two builds, one AMD and one Nvidia

AMD:
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/BZ268K

Nvidia:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-swift-pg248q-24-3d-led-hd-gsync-monitor-black/5376601.p?id=bb5376601&skuId=5376601

AMD = ~$1350
Nvidia = ~$1600

The Freesync monitor is apparently excellent
I'm still researching the gsync one, hopefully it's nice

What does /pcbg/ think? Both are within budget. I really want a high quality monitor, which is why the Viewsonic XG2401 (AMD build) is very tempting. Does anyone know how the Asus PG248Q compares? Anything I should change or swap out?

Making a small computer for my dad. I know the CPU is overkill but I figured that it won't matter since it's cheap anyway and I'm hoping it lasts him a good 8 years or more, just to play simple browser games, play YouTube videos, listen music, etc.

Gonna load a simple Linux for him, he and mom already got used to Ubuntu, and it's an easy way to prevent them from installing a shitload of crapware.

What do you think?

Why get a 480 when the fury often comes down to around the same price? Also it beats both the 480 and the 1060 in all but a handful of 1080p benchmarks and wins in all 1440p and 4k benchmarks?

http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/F34Jf8

I'll swap out the GPU for an EVGA SC model when they're in stock again, I just want something that is nice and quiet.
Not sure about the PSU and the motherboard, what's considered good at the moment? Motherboard should just be stable and be a decent overclocker, I don't need fancy bullshit features and even audio is sorted out through my audio interface.
EVGA G2 power supplies used to be the rage 1-2 years ago but it seems like they're phasing them out. What's the new standard, quiet reliable PSU that doesn't break the bank?
>>
>>56072207
Going by jonnyguru the superflower leadex gold is excellent, semi passive and even with the fan pretty quiet, so I'll probably go for that. 850W is 30 bucks more compared to 650W, I think I'll go for the meme and get it in case I want to buy a second GPU.

That leaves the mainboard and any other comments or suggestions on the build.

I have an Asus z170 motherboard, pic is not mine but was the best pic of this that I could find. On mine though, the thing with "Asus" on it is hot as fuck all the time. Is this normal?

It doesn't seem like an effective design for a heat sink if thats actually what its suppose to be, but I have a bar going out of it and wrapping around my cpu with more of the same design heat sink looking things attached. The ones around the cpu are cool to the touch, and it doesn't seem to transfer that much heat coming out of the bar on the bottom one.
>>
>>56072645
That is a heatsink for the southbridge, yes.
>>
>>56072645
north bridges usually run pretty warm. i've never owned a mobo that hasn't.
>>
>>56072683
yea, I just avoided the names because Im not sure whats called what, I assume thats also the z170 chipset.
But should it be so hot that my body tells me that I really should stop touching it? Doesnt seem very healthy for the components.
>>
>>56072710
It's impossible to tell from here, maybe ask ASUS whether that's supposed to be very warm (uncomfortable to the touch), but in general a warm heatsink is a good thing since it's actually doing its job. Whether the southbridge is supposed to pump out that much energy is a different matter which we can't really solve for you sine none of us designed taht motherboard. If they say it's normal and you're worried make sure you have good airflow over that part of the motherboard.

Hey lads, I see the Intel core i5 getting a lot of love on /g/. Any reason in particular it's preferable over the i7? I'm gonna put a build together soon but I have no fucking clue what I'm doing.
>>
>>56072933
For the standard consumer parts the i5 and the i7 both have 4 cores, the i7 just uses a technology called hyperthreading. Hyperthreading doesn't make a difference in games and many other workloads, so if that's all you're doing then there is absolutely no point in getting the i7. It gets relevant in heavy multitasking, VMs and video editing, for example, but most people aren't doing that.
>>
>>56072933
It really depends what your needs are and what tasks you'll be doing. For daily general use the i5 just werks for less money
>>
>>56072960
>>56072968
Thanks gents. So if I was using it for AAA games as well as mucking around with level design in Unity and maybe some video editing, 3D modelling in blender etc the i7 might come in handy? Is this why old mate recommended the i7 to me?
>>
>>56072999
For gaming theres no difference, but in unity/rendering videos it will make a world of a difference getting an i7. If you do that stuff often then go for an i7
>>
>>56072999
Ive also heard having an SSD when working with unity is almost a must have so make sure to get one of them if you're using unity frequently

Is there any point at all in attempting to overclock a CPU, i6700k, without LLC support in the motherboard?

Without going deep into it I've only gotten unstable as fuck clocks going even slightly over 4ghz. The cooling is fine though. Like 60 degrees on 100% load.

No, there are plenty of H170 chipset boards that take DDR4 memory. You really just need a Z170 board if you take the higher end CPUs and want to overclock them and use all the features.
>>
>>56075635
I see, thank you. I'm having trouble finding an H170 board that is significantly cheaper than the Z170. We're talking 10 euro difference here, it's nothing.

There's only a $20 difference but I would need to buy a cooling unit for 6600k separately. That adds another $30.
I'm getting an asrock z170 that can overclock the 6500 if I need it.

Making a gaming computer for my younger brother. No overclocking as you can obviously see. Any suggestions?
>>
>>56073473
>>56075240
IIRC, when my younger brother was building his first PC a little over a month ago, he said he downloaded Windows 10 straight from Microsoft himself. He put the .exe on a flash drive, installed it and everything was okay. The only "problem" is that there's a somewhat noticeable watermark on the bottom right corner of the screen. I believe this is because he didn't actually buy a key?
>>
>>56076017
Use 2 ram sticks for dual channel memory. You don't need to buy a fan for the 6600. Get something cheaper and easier to install if you need silence.
>>
>>56076035
K, I'm gonna try that for my new PC. If it's just a water mark it's not a big deal to me. Btw I'm gonna be reading guides for this of course, but I assume you have to turn the .exe into an .iso?

Who here has this motherboard? What does it offer me that no other ASUS (or other motherboards in general) have? Two friends of mine own it and they love it. I'd like to know because the only parts that I'm willing to spend a lot of money are is the processor, video/graphics card and RAM which IIRC, are the parts that seemingly have the most "impact" for gaming in terms of how the graphics look and how it runs while as for motherboard, it's just the piece of the puzzle that holds everything together.

Flagship motherboards offers more community support in case you need it. For example if you're trying to get Linux or OSX working or perhaps a piece of hardware that might potentially be incompatible.

Doesn't really matter if you don't plan on extending your usage scenario beyond casual usage.

I want to build a PC. I have no idea where to begin, I last built one last century, when AGP was just becoming popular.

I'll be using it for programming and retro gaming. I'll be writing Scala so I guess I want a good processor and fast hard drive. I have modest storage requirements, 2TB would be way more than enough for me. Will be running Linux, probably Fedora.

It doesn't everyone and their mamma's know that 1060 is the better GPU, and MAYBE in the future when DX12 becomes relevant the 480 will be better.
with that said, there is barely any on stock, reference are loud as fuck, and after market coolers are no where to be found.

470 is solid for 1080p. You should be able to play most new games at 60fps with max/ultra settings paired with a decent CPU.

Dual channel makes 1-2% difference in games from the benchmarks I've seen. Other applications might have significant benefits.

I though they removed that feature? guessing they added it, but than remove it from the BiOS later on.

I want a Gtx 1070+ i5 6600k combo. I'm not particular on any parts, but I'm trying to get the cost of the machine down to $999, but while keeping all high quality parts, I/e all black, modular cables, ect. I already Have a Samsung SSD that I will transplant into this machine. I'm using the hyper 212x to show that i want the cryorig h7, but it's currently out of stock in the US. I'm open to suggestions on a good performing cooler in the same price range. I plan on putting the cpu at 4.3 or 4.4ghz.

The purpose of the machine 1440p gaming. Is 16gb ram necessary? I've heard some of the newer games already use a hair over 8gb.

I just did a build in the nzxt s340 for a friend. Had to add case fans for intake. The 2 fans brought the price of the case into the $90 price range. Any cases comparable to the s340 that already have good airflow?

550w is all you need for ANY build unless you SLI and overclock
>>
>>56084975
modular means you only have to plug in as many cables as you're using. it's a nice feature to make building a little easier, and make a system a little cleaner. It costs a few more dollars though. some power supplies have all black cables that look nice, but cost a few more dollars.

what wattage do you need? I have the bestbuy EVGA 600w (no b) and it works fine with my amd fx 8350 + gtx 960 + 4 case fans. It's a little ugly though and has a few extra cables that I don't need, and had to tie behind the back panel.

Intel CPUs are better so they can sell it for a higher price and people are willing to buy it for that higher price.
>>
>>56087519
>Intel CPUs are better
Why are they better if the AMD has higher specs? Is this a case of where even though it has 8 cores and it's ramped up to 4.7ghz, it still doesn't perform that great because each individual core is weak or something? I'm guessing the only way to gauge performance is looking at benchmark comparisons.
>>
>>56087409
Yeah. The amd one is a 3 year old product, which is a modified version of the 2012 fx8350. The 9590 uses more than double the wattage than a 6700k, makes an insane amount of heat (notice it requires water cooling) has GARBAGE single threaded performance, only partially makes up in multi-core stuff. (Video editing, 3d rendering, ect)

See the ghz you quoted doesn't matter. The 6700k overclocks to 4.7ghz with a good cooler.

The 9590 is a piece of shit. Buy an 8350 and a $40 heatsink, bump the clock to 4.5ghz, and it will be almost as good as the 9590 for less money and a fuck load less heat.

What's a good all black, or black and white full sizes Atx z170 mobo for cheap? Currently looking at the Asus z170-a, but I'd prefer to spend more like $110. Going to clock a 6600k to 4.4ghz.

Sure, if you're a blithering idiot. Everything can only go in the correct way, so if it's not going in easily, take it out and make sure it's oriented correctly. It's just very expensive Lego bricks.
>>
Would like to get the build under 1k if possible (that 1k figure scares me) I guess it would be possible if the 1070's weren't so overpriced? Anything else I could take down a notch?

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/GfVgtJ

I have a SSD in my current build, so I'll be bringing that over.

Also I'm pretty clueless when it comes to monitors. I should be looking at 1440p, right? I've really pushing my budget as-is, so what's the go-to budget option?

Thanks!

The GPU is not final as neither the 1060 or the 480 are easily available right now.

Prices are in Canadollaridoos
>>
>>56097529
I think 1000w is overkill for the 1060, even if you want to overclock, I don't know shit about power supplies or overclocking tho, so I'm talking out of my ass
>>
>>56097689
1000w is enough for multiple 1060s but he already has that part
>>
>>56097529
Definitely 2. The $5 price difference is nothing compared to the performance difference a 6600k has over a 6600, especially in the long term considering you're getting a Z170 board as well.
>>
>>56097529
So basically you're asking whether to get an i5-6600k or an i5-6600?
Both motherboards use the Z160 chipset so I/O performance is both great, your motherboard choice at this point is based on what plugs you want in the back.
RAM is RAM, the DDR4-2800 should be slightly faster but it's all DDR4 and fast
You don't need 1000W at all, if you want to cut the price down to a ~700W PSU.
My seagate drives have had bad luck in the past, I would just get one 2TB until you need more, you could always just pop in another drive when you have to
And I believe the founders edition 1060's are supposed to be in stock, but they're $300 through NVidia only
>>
>>56097765
Main issue is I'd have to purchase some of those parts (mainly the MOBO) today. Considering I JUST finished picking up the parts, I'm asking around for opinions on my picks.

The reason I'm getting 2 2TB HDD is that the SSD will be used exclusively for the OS, the first HDD will be for everything else, and the second will be backing up everything from the second. I'm dead afraid of losing another (lost 2) HDDs and losing all my fucking backups again.

Just use your SSD like normal (OS and all your data), and have 1 HDD for backups only
>>
>>56097840
I download a lot of shit (music and movies) and that simply won't fit on a SSD. Plus the 275 is just cheaper per GB compared to the 128 (and apparently has better performance).
I will probably start moving shit to DVDs eventually though.
>>
>>56097807
Point still stands. The 6600k and Z170 board far exceeds the price / perf of the 6600 H170 combo. The $5 difference is peanuts. I highly recommend you return whatever and get the 6600k and Z170 board. BCLK overclocking got "fixed" on most everything.
>>
>>56097933
Only thing I own right now is the PSU, which I currently use in my computer right now. At a later date, I could get a cheaper PSU and do something else with my current computer, but between reusing my PSU and spending to get a new one, not sure if it's not just better to save and keep what I have(even if it's at least 6 years old)
>>
>>56097883
>it simply won't fit on an SSD
What about this 4tb one? Either way, I'd be disgusted with all that wasted space WHILE I'm using much slower HDD data for everything except boot up, but that's just me, I have a normal use SSD, a backup+some other data SSD, and a 1TB HDD for backups only. Nobody likes a failed drive though

>>
>>56098092
The way I see it, if a 4TB drive fails, I lose 4TB of data. If a 2TB drive fails, and I had another 2TB for backups, I lose nothing except the drive. Yes I get less total capacity, but I'd rather not have to redownload everything for the fourth fucking time and having a proper backup than only one drive to rely on.
>>
>>56098026
You could safely go with a Corsair 430m PSU in the 6600k and 1060 build. SLI 1080's and a 6700k are able to be run on a 500w PSU.

The corsair 430m is typically $35 on rebate and it's 80+ bronze. Get that new PSU and keep your old PC intact or sell it.
>>
>>56098373
Noted. Anything else on the brand of the HDD? SSD? Ram? I half expected to get my SSD and HDD brand choices completely destroyed
>>
How would rank Crucial SSD's?
>>
>>56098332
Just instead of using 1 SSD (which won't even be well used) and 2 HDDs, I'm saying you could use 2 SSDs and 1HDD and still have a total backup, AND benefit from SSD daily
If you can't let yourself put ANY user data on an SSD because you need all of 2 TB on a daily basis, then do you really need an SSD at all?
Boot vs boot, you're spending $80 to save maybe 5 seconds, only when you turn it on or off. You can maybe find a 16GB sata6 SSD for dirt cheap and throw your couple gigs of OS at it and be happy with your mech drives, but if you're only using 1% of your SSD to speed things up, why not use more of it?

Poorfag here. From what I've read this is probably a really stupid question, but I'm currently getting around 40-60 fps on my 60Hz VGA input monitor. It's old as shit too, at least 10 years. >>
>>56099853

But whatever. Say I waste extra money on a newer processor and memory. Is everything OK then?
>>
>>56099917
if you follow the build i linked earlier it will be ok

theres a lot more wrong with that pc than just its ram and cpu
>>
>>56099234
Horrible.
Look up compatibilities first of all, that CPU isn't a 1151 socket like your motherboard, your full-size ATX motherboard won't fit in a super tiny ITX-size case, 4GB of DDR2 ram is weak as fuck, you'll probably want a small SSD for boot up and quick-load data, with a fucking 1080 card you'll want a higher Hz monitor (since you want to be able to enjoy high FPS gaming that your card can deliver) and you want the power supply to be overkill in wattage.
So upgrade your RAM, change your CPU to a compatible socket, change either your motherboard to ITX or your case to ATX and get a better monitor
Shouldn't change the price too much since more than half of the price is in the card anyways
>>
>>56099942

>>56099959

If you're getting under 60fps now, you'll need to upgrade your video card. CPU is good for gaming but 90% of games are not CPU-intensive at all, the GPU card is what'll boost your frames. Once you're always hitting 60fps you should upgrade to a 144hz monitor or whatever
