To kick things off, here's my friend's full desk setup from scratch:

i5-6500
$90 b150 board
212 Evo for silence (compared to a stock fan)
16gb ram for muh programs
250gb samsung SSD + 1tb HDD
Gtx 1060
Nzxt S340 + 2 case fans.
Corsair RmX 550w Gold - modular.

Power supply will change from corsair 'cause I heard some bad things about them
>>
>>56005485
Add a 1tb hdd into that puppy and you're good to go honestly. It's almost impossible to find the nitro 480 but if you got it, hey great man.
The mini gtx 1060 is easier to find though, and can be had for $249, which is actually cheaper than the 480 nitro.
>>
I want to upgrade my card and I'm deciding between a RX 480 or a 1070/1080. Which one would be the better buy and why? I'd like it to help with video rendering mostly.
>>
>>56006433
480 is better price to performance, not great thermals.
1070 is more money but a much higher rate of performance. If you're not sure you need a 1080, your probably don't need a 1080.
>>
>>56006466
I see. I'll aim for the 1070 then. I'll probably go with EVGA as well unless there's something else I should know.

Thank you for the helpful answer.

Since the thread is slow, and the last one 404-ed, I'm going to pose a big of a challenge.

I'm attempting to make a list for a potential build with a 1070 and 6600k combo for 1440p high/ultra settings gaming. I want to clock the cpu to only about 4.2 or 4.3 ghz. Cpu cooler must be at least slightly better than the 212 evo, and the cryorig H7 seems to have disappeared off the market.

I want it to be themed all white and black. Being in the $1000+ range, it must include at least a semi-modular power supply with black cables, and the case must have sturdy construction and airflow, though the need to add case fans is acceptable (see Nzxt s340).

Who thinks they can put together a better list than this for cheaper? Assume the ssd is already purchased.
>>
>>56004714

Could some kind europ-anon recommend me a relatively cheap >100hz >24inch1440p monitor? Shipping and import fee is pushing the 300$ ones to >400€...
>>
Bros, just upgraded from a gtx 660 to a r9 fury for $300. Did I do alright? My pessimistic friend said I wasted money when I should have just bought an rx480.

Yo thats a pretty damn steep discount. What about the rest of that list ? I was imagining somebody making a whole new one and saying "no this is better. "
>>
>>56007989
Slightly better than a 1060 iirc. You did fine. Hope your power supply is beefy though.

Where's everyone at? This was super active a couple days ago.
>>
>>56010814
It's nothing spectacular to see here and they probably don't like to repeat themselves.
>>
I'm pretty much waiting on pulling the trigger for my build until the Rx 480 nitro releases, but I have no idea when what do.
>>
I'm looking to buy a 1060 for my first PC build and they're very hard to come by where I live. I've come across this card which is available now and within my budget, but the design scares me. Every other 1060 I find has 2-3 large fans spanning the entirety of the card. Is this not going to lead to poor ventilation or is this some engineering feat?
>>
>>56012507
It blows air out the back of the card to prevent heat getting into the rest of the computer. Temps are usually a bit toasty but it will be pretty much the same as Founder card

Gaming, Media Consumption, Streaming, Audio Production, Autodesk and Solidworks (I have a habit of multitasking.)

I have an SSD, but I plan on adding more SSDs and HDDs for RAID. Would I need a RAID controller or can it be done on the Mobo?

Seems really good. I don't know tooo much about x99 platform, but that's a nearly top of the line build. Every x99 machine I've ever seen had all 8 dimms populated though. You could do 8 x 4gb if you want. Imagine this is for all the production stuff, and multitasking as you said.
Broadwell-E just released, any interest in that?

just hold out until supply catches up with the demand and prices will stabilize. Or pull the trigger and have buyers remorse when AIB's are cheaper. Prices are fucked everywhere at the moment. Your dosh though that card will do the job.

Preferably NewEgg (going to be getting other parts from them) or Amazon (I have prime).

This one seems suspiciously cheap: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157635

Any reason not to get it?

I also found this one, which is a bit pricier but has usb 3.1: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Solution-Z170A-Motherboard-PC/dp/B0131GA4VE

What mobo to get for a mid/high tier gaming build with a 6600k?

Can't decide between the Asus Z170-A or the Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 3
>>
>>56014938
The A has PS/2 port and what looks like VGA, while the PRO doesn't, which doesn't matter since I have no need for either, 6x SATA 6 Gb/s(PRO) vs 4x, higher DDR4 OC on the PRO and aesthetically the PRO board is black rather than black/brown (-A) which reviews say looks terrible. That's what I have atm. There's only a 30$ delta between them.
>>

Depends, what are you going to be trading? Equities? FX? Commodities?

What sorts of products? Swaps, futures, options, something more exotic?

?
>>
>>56016646

>>
>>56016661
I can do since I'm in driving distance of someone who lives to the UK, but prices still seem pretty marked up. Overclockers seems like a good bet, but they still seem a bit steep. The exception seems to be the small custom 1060s and the Asus reference card I linked.

I haven't bought anything but the video card so far. Mobo is cheap but it has all I need. Extra fan is for the top of my case, since it's not a very big case, I want to create a good airflow inside it, so that gpu and cpu don't heat too much. No aftermarket cpu cooler because I don't mean to overclock cpu. SSD is expensive but I know it's the best sata III, then why not spending more money on it?

Hey guys this is my first build ever so I know that I messed up somewhere. Here's the link:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/4mxHzM

My intention while making this build was to make a workstation for my programming tasks, while also creating a build strong enough to handle low level games for the next few years (Think CS:GO, RS3, Overwatch).

My budget is $1600, so there is some wiggle room for smart upgrades. I would really like to see improvements to the build quality if possible since I don't know much about the quality of the parts besides what their price implies and I would like this system to go about 5 years before needing an upgrade.

It's not just about the power draw, that thing makes a monstrous amount of heat and you need a good, stable, motherboard for it that can support overclocking, since it's essentially an fx 8350 with a dialed in OC already. The amount of money you'd spend, when you can get a 6600k and dial it to 4.4 on a cheap ass z170 boartd and heatsink is just not worth in any way shape or form.

Is this the best price to performance one can get for 1080p? Assuming you can get a nice OC on the i3, will that be shitty in a couple years? I imagine a build like this would perform in pretty much every game except Witcher 3, and maaaybe not great in GTAV. Would and i5 6500 be better for price-to-performance? You save on the chipset and cooler, but the base cost will still be a little higher.

Because the 6600k at stock clock speed kicks it's ass in literally every task except a bit of rendering. But you don't leave a 6600k at stock speeds, even with a cheap stock cooler like the cm212.

>>
>>56023331
Even things that aren't games mate. Juice the i5 up to 4.3 and it will beat the (4.7ghz) 9590 in every computing task you can imagine. Photoshop? Encoding? 3 modelling? Data analysis? Compiling?
Can you name one thing a 9590 will do better?
And in "gaymes!!" As you put it, the difference is dramatic. The Anon with the chip also asked what a good cheap graphics card is, so unless they're doing CAD rendering or a linux passthrough, its probably for gaming.

Basically looking to build a relatively small Esports box to sit at my desk and run Windows for when I need to game and then looking to pick up an XPS 13 Developer Edition for my daily use machine with Linux on it. Thought and opinions?

P.S. by "Esports" I mean I'd be playing Counter Strike, Dota, Starcraft, Quake/Reflex, and maybe a tiny bit of Overwatch, nothing very demanding whatsoever.

I don't trust SSDs and their bullshit so I need a normal HDD that is speedy enough to handle loading big games like Overwatch and Dota 2.

Stupid question incoming.

I'm interested in building a PC, and my brother is being a cool dude and is offering to upgrade his processor and give me his old one for nothing. I don't know the specifics yet, but I'm pretty sure it's an i7 quad core with around 2.5GHz per core. Would this be considered pretty outdated and/or useless? For reference, I'm considering getting a GTX 1060 and I'd ideally like to play games like Overwatch and Street Fighter 5.
>>
>>56023573

Why not 16gb ram though
>>
>>56029416
It would really depend on the model, or more specifically the generation. We're on the 6th generation of desktop i7's right now, but generally there haven't been great strides in a while, it'll probably be fine.

I remember when SSDs were just a blip on the horizon in 2008 and I was so fucking stoked to never have to listen to a mechanical HDD ever again, plus the power efficiency and speed increases.

The firmware that cause some SSDs to die prematurely was phased out in one generation at least 6 years ago. That's you falling for old lady wooden pussy FUD

You're fucking dumb dude.
>>
modular, semi-modular or fixed for power supply?
>>
>>56029498
The desktop would only be used for gaming, not general use at all. Currently my Windows drive on my desktop has graphics drivers, Discord, and video games, that's it. Not even a third party web browser.

Doesn't seem necessary and I wanted to keep the cost down as much as possible while still getting a good enough gaming rig. When the 1050 comes out I may even drop to that.
>>
>>56029686
The only reason I got 16gb was because during gaming, I would run out at 8gb. I didn't believe it because everyone always says 8 is enough. I only have 4 cores and don't really run vm's much, or encode/photoshop enough to really need 16, except for gaming.

I'm trying to go for a quiet / near silent htpc build. I already have a u2515h (1440p monitor). Ideally, I'd like to be able to run madVR with the nnedi3 scalers without kicking up the fans or keeping them dead silent if they do run.

I'm not sure about whether the PSU is going to be too loud and I'm hovering between the 960 and 1060.
Budget is a soft $700 and a hard $800 USD, cheaper being the prefered choice.

NVIDIA drivers are also better.

And the 1060 is cheaper if you buy it at MSRP

Durability mainly, and software. As much as I love Asus's Uefi interface, durability is utter trash, support is even worse, I built a computer for a family member who had constant MB failures. So they are out of the question. MSI and ASRock BIOS interface isn't as up to par as Gigabyte's not mentioning feature sets. I understand Gigabyte has cheaper motherboards, however i just want something that lasts honestly, and from other peoples experience, gigabyte UD line is pretty damn solid. A friend of mine is still rocking an older gigabyte line with it overclocked since day one with no issues, where others failed.

tl;dr I just want something that lasts and has solid component. But I'm open to suggestions as bringing the price down is preferable. Just as long as it isn't Asus

Intel changed the thickness of the substrate for its Skylake (6th generation) Core processors. However the thinner, less rigid structure could lead to many well known coolers damaging the chip and/or the motherboard, says a report by PC Games Hardware in Germany.

The report says that due to the chip's weaker supporting structure, the pressure exerted by a number of well known coolers is simply too much and is causing components to bend. The mechanically weaker CPU, its pins, and the motherboard contacts can all be bent and sheared by the pressure exerted by cooler clamping mechanisms. Even if that doesn't happen straight away, as you system sits on its desk, the moving of the system anywhere, if it receives any knocks or bumps in transit, could result in the structural ill-effects.
>>

Check out the manual for that motherboard on their website and read up on it.

I'm gonna be honest here, there's a lot wrong with the build.
First off, the 8350 isn't a great cpu for gaming at all. I'm using it right now. It's OK but certain games bottleneck it. Fairly certain World of Warcraft, for example, can only use 2 CPU cores, meaning it's basically a 4ghz Athlon. Intel is just straight up better for gaming.

Secondly, that cpu cooler is really only for super mini builds. It's good for tiny ass computers, but you have a lot of room in that S340 (good case choice btw). For the same price, you can get much better coolers that are full sized.

gtx 970 is just straight up worse than a gtx 1060. Camp nowinstock.net if you have to. 1060 is newer hardware, more vram, higher clocks. It's just better.

Power supply is a little expensive for your tier of build, but it's a quality unit.

I would like one piece of this process to just fucking work the way it's supposed to. I would like the world's largest OS producer to include drivers for standard hardware on its install CDs, instead of making me jury-rig this shit into it.

I guess I was asking for it, trying to go Win7 on a Skylake, but I hoped the mobo's PS/2 emulation settings would allow me to do the install even though it only has USB 3 ports.

>>
>>56044377
Your build is similar to mine, the few differences being that I don't have an aftermarket cooler, my mobo is cheaper (Asus H110 m-k), my RAM is faster (1x8GB 2133 MHz CL 13, Kingston Savage) and I have a 1TB HDD (WD Caviar Blue 7200 RPM) and a different case (Cooler Master N200).
Why would you take the OEM version of Windows 10 though?
>>
>>56044993
Going by that calculator, you probably use about 496 watts at max load. Your 550w unit is technically enough, but when you see "80+ certified" it means it runs best with about 20℅ overhead, which for your components means about 600 watts is optimal.
Your unit won't crap out on you, but you may want to upgrade.

>>56045123

wrong. it means it draws 20% extra at the wall, not that it gives 20% watts less to your components.

I built my PC a few months ago, but I was wondering:

is RAM always a total bitch to fit into the mobo? I bought a stick without a heatshield, and I was fully sure I was going to either grind down the contacts on the stick or break my mobo outright when fitting it.

The top of the stick cut my thumb when I was pressing down on it, to give an idea of the pressure I ended up using on it. Eventually it went in when I pushed one corner in, and then went down on the other corner, as it sat at an angle.

Have a question guise.

My current piece of shit is as follows:
FX-8120
ASRock Pro3 (Early revision, doesnt really support 125w cpu, i have to run at 2.8GHz)
8GB (1x8GB) DDR3-1600
Asus Radeon 5770
Crucial m4 64GB
Decent PSU
Decent Case
Assorted hard drives and shit.

Ive found this on local auction site:
Intel QuadCore i5-2500k @ 3.4Ghz (34x100)
Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3 Motherboard
32GB (4x8GB) G.Skill F3-12800CL10-8GBXL DDR3 RAM 7-7-7-18
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 Series
OCZ 240GB Vertex-4 HDD
Ultra X3 1000W Power Supply

It comes in one of these:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MountainMods/U2-UFO-CYO
/
And it has all the following

Cooling with all 1/2" fittings
EK-Supreme LT Waterblock
EK-Multioption Reservoir 250 Rev 2
Swiftech MCP655 12VDC Pump
Thermochill 120.3 Radiator
Feser Black Anti-Kink Tubing 1/2"
Feser One F1 Cooling Fluid UV-Red

I know the video card is a bit weak, but it can surely play most modern games at okay settings cant it?

Its cheap as hell, for the same money I am looking at getting an i3-6100 and gtx950

I wouldn't trust that power supply at all. Also a 1440p capable machine is going to want at MINIMUM 500W, probably 550.
Best gpu for your range is probably a gtx 1060, but only if you pay less than $280 for it. Otherwise I'd rather try and find a craigslist gtx 980, and try to talk the seller to $299 max. There's actually an MSI gaming one in my area for $300. If you could find a great deal on a Fury X or some such that would be good too.

Don't forget to budget for your OS, Case, ect. If you're on a budget, I recommend checking out the Crucial MX 300 series ssd's that just came out.
>>
>>56055667
>Don't forget to budget for your OS, Case, ect.
already have those from the machine im typing this on. also im curious why the resolution would affect the PSU needed, my monitor plugs into the wall not the case? Isn't power draw based on the components in the case?

Maybe i'll get a cheaper SSD and a more reliable power supply with the money saved. why is the 1070 bad here?
>>
>>56054821
Neither, but you have made significant quality sacrifices. Your PSU/mobo are very low end.
>>
>>56055696
1070 isn't bad. It's great. Just not sure how you're going to really fit that within your $800 budget.
Resolution doesn't effect power draw. A mid-high end graphics card + your cpu will be using a hefty chunk of power though. The 1070, for example, can spike up to 220 watts. See >>56045123
If you're going to be using the system for say, 2+ years, then you want something that won't shit out on you. I've had 2 low end corsair units fail on me.

though personally i cant stand amd cpu's so i'd go for something based on an older sandy bridge platform even if it means a little less storage and a slightly cheaper gpu.

Though its questionable whether there's really any sacrifices to be made, the 2400 is a bit more expensive than the 6300 but the motherboard will be a lot cheaper since no overclocking required on a 2400. And you get 4 real cores not 6 half cores, and much better floating point performance.

I originally intended to get the 1060 since it seems superior in every way, but this monitor is apparently amazing (1080p 144hz freesync, actually 1ms, no PWM, etc.) so I swapped it out for the 480. Is this a bad move? My budget is $1500 or so. Could an extra $200-$300 result in a better gpu/monitor combo? I'd prefer a 1060/1070 but gsync is expensive and from what I've seen, mostly in 1440p monitors.

Its not a matter of wattage per se, more of the fact when pushed hard a good psu will give no fucks - meh and shit tier units tend to give up under the strain. Remember quality lower wattage unit > shit high wattage unit.

Take for example super flower - most of their units really will deliver their rated wattage no matter what (fun fact: a low of EVGA units are rebranded super flower units) whereas a diablotek unit is a fireball waiting to happen.

Actually, to elaborate, here's what I don't like about the blackwidow.
>Huge frame, takes up whole desk
>5 macro buttons never get used, due to inconvenient placement if you're holding W in a game.
>Media shortcuts require taking your hand off the mouse.
>Key caps are slippery glossy bullshit.
>The switches feel just like a mushy cherry Blue, when its supposed to be like a clickier cherry Red.
Any other questions?
