Ill shoot,

I just recently got a shipment for a new pc from amazon...mobo, an HD, I ssd, power supply, vidcard, etc

Now, fuck me because I ordered in the summer, but all the contents were really fucking HOT, even inside their amazon boxes.

Is the heat from being transported from the warehouse to my doorstep something I should worry about?

I updated my android to kernel 3.4.0 somewhat recently
Before the update whenever I connected my phone to my desktop via USB a little notification would pop up asking if I wanted to transfer files with MTP or something.

Now on 6.0 that option doesn't show up and even searching "usb" or "mtp" in my phone's settings it doesn't bring anything up.

How do I enable MTP on my android?

Alright, so I have a workstation and I just bought some Registered RAM. Problem is, it doesn't fucking work, and it definitely SHOULD. Now, Lelnovo says max specs for this thing is as follows:
Memory

Type DDR3 Unbuffered SDRAM
ECC Supported
Maximum Capability : 1600MHz, UDIMM : PC3-10600 (1333MHz), RDIMM : PC3-8500 (1066MHz)
Max DIMM Sizes : 4GB
Maximum system memory : 24GB

Now, I am 100% positive that these limitations are sheerly based on the W3550 inside of it. I'm going to put an L5640 in there, and I have two questions:

First, will the L5640 be compatible with my system? It's an S20, by the way, and I'm sure it will be. Same socket and everything, but I just want to be sure.

Second, what is the maximum size and number of RAM that I can use for that processor? I currently have an 8GiB module.

any help would be appreciated

When scanf reads a string, it appends a null terminator ('\0') to the end of the input.

>>
>>56034523
for iterates through every character of that string
if inside that loop checks if that character is alphanumeric. if it is, then it prints that message, if it's not it simply goes to another iteration of loop
>>
>>56034550
I know what the code does, i don't understand why it iterates through all, first cause cad[i] is a char, not an integer, and second cause char[i] at the moment of for declaration would be cad[0], aka, the first char is the termination value

unless of course index 0 refers to the whole string and not to the first char of the string
>>
>>56034630
and to make things messier, if i try changing it for cad[0] it loops for ever

does i change on every iteration? if so, then do null terminators stop the for completely?

if so, is this even the correct way to do it, or just a hack abusing how C internally works?

for stops when condition evaluates to false
0 is zero as false, non-zero values are treated as true
cad[i] is non-zero when it's different than \0 (null byte)
you could rewrite it as
for(i=0; cad[i] != '\0'; i++)

Has anyone tried reviving arcades but with VR instead?

You would have to lease a decently large place. It would have maybe 25-30 rooms, rented by the hour. Each room would have a VR headset connected to a high spec PC, and every PC connected to a subnet in a LAN.

The games would have to be specially coded so that at the beginning of a chosen game, you can choose to match up with other people in the network. That way, if someone wanted, they could bring a group of friends and they can play some shooting game or whatever together.

Sapphire RX 470 for about $170 vs an RX 480 4GB as of RIGHT NOW.

I've been waiting too damn long for an RX 480 4GB; it seems like a legit paper launch as of right now. I'm not waiting anymore, the most a week maybe.

I'm not buying a GTX 1060 for one the current price for it is too expensive for a marginal increase in performance vs the 480 and plus I'm not planning on buying a new GPU in one or two years but rather keep whatever I buy until I start seeing unplayable frames (~40 FPS in 1440p/1080p) which is basically like 3-5 years.

I could probably save up for a GTX 1070 for like another month however I work $8.05 an hour and have other priorities as well. For instance, I plan on 1440p gaymin' in the future so I'm trying to get a 2K monitor as well.

tl;dr I want a video card fucking NOW for $150~200ish for 1080p and modest 1440p gaymin in more casual games like Dota/Overwatch (atleast 30 FPS.) There's an RX 470 for $170.

I would download and reinstall the usb3 controller drivers from your manufacturers website just in case. Then open an administrative command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" without quotes. If you get any errors run it again. Restart then install the following updates:

microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47351

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332

then you should be able to update windows.

Hello YOU PEOPLE, I enjoy your company. I have a question! I set out to build a system to play GAME at X FPS. I look around at benchmarks and find a GPU that can do it with the 6700k. Say I have an AES-256 encrypted Windows 10 partition achieved with VeraCrypt.

On normal bootup, I am met with a prompt for my decryption password, which is great. However, I am worried of what could be done to bypass this.

Couldn't someone who is trying to steal sensitive data chose to boot from a repair/install disk and delete the encrypted partition and recover the data through typical recovery means?

Or could they also simply reinstall windows or another OS on a separate partition (or even drive) that can then attempt to explore the encrypted drive?

Basically what I am asking is would there be a way to bypass an encrypted Windows partition and read its contained data?

Could some sysadmin or /hsg/ anon check my work please?

I'm setting up ZFS (on Linux), which I've never used before. I'm gonna be using mirror vdevs, since I hear that's the easiest way for a hobbyist to make his storage system easily expandable - since I can buy more drives two at a time, but six at a time would be difficult. Now, since I need to be able to swap in random drives of varying brands, I've heard that I need to make sure that if I'm swapping drive A for drive B, that drive B isn't a handful of sectors smaller than A. Which might happen if A and B are different makes and models, even if they have the same nominal capacity. So even though I hear ZFS likes having the whole drive, I'm instead going to make partitions of a fixed size a bit smaller than the disk, so if I have to swap later I know I can make a partition of exactly the same size. I know that /dev/sdX names aren't constant, and I want drives to be identified correctly even if I plug them into different SATA ports or controllers, so I'm going to give them to ZFS via /dev/disk/by-partuuid. (Once I've partitioned the disks I'm going to stick labels with the part uuid on them to keep track, in addition to just writing down what I did)

what if anything is wrong with my plan?

If you only got only one SYS_FAN connector you can either connect it to your PSU for it to work at 100% every time.

CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT are for the HSF only.

There should be atleast 2 SYS_FAN connectors.

I have a fully modular EVGA G1 PSU, looking to get some braided cables for it, can I use any version of braided cables or does it HAVE to match my PSU?

Closest I can find is cables made for the G2 model which is double the price of other cables

Also is it worth upgrading from 4690k/DDR3 to 6600k/DDR4 for gaming?

Different manufacturers use different pinouts for modular PSUs, its pretty dumb there hasn't be a revision to ATX to standardize them.

I have that exact case and I have to unplug the front case fan. You know the red one at the front because it makes this annoying flickering noise. I think one of the wires, or something, protrudes and the fan blades hit it and it gets really annoying. Otherwise it's a big and solid case. I keep it under my desk.

I would just say get an i5. Also you have a Z170 motherboard. I am not too sure since I haven't been looking out for a computer but it seems like that's more for CPUs that can be overclocked so it has features they aren't necessary for you. Maybe downgrade to some H series and upgrade the CPU. Definitely, because if you decide to upgrade your graphics card it might bottleneck it.
>>
I'm planning to buy an Intel i5-6500.
Will the stock cooler be enough, or should I invest in that 212 evo that everyone and their dog recommends for a base HSF upgrade?

Do CPU coolers, both stock and aftermarket, come with thermal paste?
If they do, is it sufficient, or is it recommended to get a little $6 tube of thermal paste as well?
>>
>>56040375
What ever you do, don't buy it from Conrad.
They just take a cheap Chinese product you get directly from China for 1€ (including shipping) and slap their logo on it and sell it for 10€.
>>

>>56040366
I wouldn't think so. Check out some performance tests. I'd say Windows 10 is more refined and the devs focus on it more.
>>
>>56040366
No DX12. That's it. Vulkan is 8.1/7/Linux.
>>
>>56040417
you only need an aftermarket cooler if you're going to overclock. you are not, since you aren't getting a K CPU, so stock will be fine. some aftermarket sinks are quieter though.

the stock cooler comes with some pre-applied thermal goop, last I had one. most aftermarket sinks come with a tube of compound.

What do sequential and random read/write mean?
If it is writing randomly, how would it know not to override the information at the spot it randomly selects should the spot already have data?
Why are sequential speeds noted in MB/s, but random speeds in an unexplained unit called IOPS?
What do these speeds mean for actual usage?
Is one more important than the other?
Why are HDD speeds only describing the speed at which the disk spins rather than the potential data transfer rate like the sequential read/write seems to describe?
>>
>>56040583
>What do sequential and random read/write mean?
sequential is when blocks are read/written in order, like "10,11,12,13,14..."
random is when it is not
>If it is writing randomly
it's not fully random is real world usage, think of it more as "not sequential", than actually random
>IOPS
input/output operations per second, aka, how many discrete things are being done each second
>What do these speeds mean for actual usage?
depends on the application, for example, copying a single large file need more sequential speed than iops, where databases typically need high iops, and they're reading and writing lots of different smaller pieces of information
>Why are HDD speeds only describing the speed at which the disk spins rather than the potential data transfer rate like the sequential read/write seems to describe?
they typically do list their sequential speeds officially somewhere
>>
>>56040583
Sequential means the section of the drive being accessed is right next to each other
Random means that random parts of the drive are being accessed
IOPS is how many operations per second the drive can perform
High IOPS will not guarantee fast random read/write but not having enough IOPS will guarantee slow random read/write

I don't really know why HDDs manufacturers don't at least give a sequential read/write speed
>>
>>56040583
sequential: a large block of data gets read/written in order. Sequential access is reading block 1, then block 2, then block 3...
random: the reads/writes happen in different areas so the heads have to seek all over. Random access is reading block 452, then block 991, then block 120...

Sequential speeds are in MB/s because since the disk knows what's coming ahead of time, this is where you see the highest transfer rates. Random speeds aren't very meaningful measured that way because it depends on how far away each random access is from the next that determines how many MB/s you can clear. Since it's random, you don't know. So the MB/s speed fluctuates a lot.

IOPS is I/O Operations Per Second. This is used instead of MB/s because the types of things that generate random accesses are often servers servicing many applications that all want to read and write to different areas. They might or might not have a lot of data to write, but IOPS determines the maximum number of them you can serve at a time before everything bogs down.

HDD rotational speed is given because the speed in MB/s varies depending on where on the physical disk platters the data is going. The outer tracks are faster - the disk is spinning at a constant speed, so more of it comes under the heads per second.

(if you don't get this, think of a man spinning a weight on a rope at a certain number of revolutions per second. If the rope is a foot long, the weight doesn't move too fast. If it's 20 feet long, the weight moves really fast. Same idea.)

it's plaintext
the only way to store them encoded would be;
a. encrypt them with another key, standalone password managers do this, such as keepass
b. store only a hash of the password, this can only be used to verify a password is entered the same, not auto-fill a password entry. things like OS user passwords are stored like this
>>
