The other one reached the bump limit.

I have a question of my own, is there a quick /g/uide on Windows 8.1 + classic shell? Such as certain updates to not install, or how to debotnet it? I haven't used it in a long time and it's the most modern windows aside from the malware known as 10. I know there are some bs features but this was the last version where you could actually turn them off.

Currently on Linux Mint and I realized I still like to do things on Windows (aside from gaming of course).

This monitor is advertised at 144Hz, but its refresh rate on my win10 is 60hz. I also want to get the monitor working as part of a triple monitor setup.

I have my graphics drivers up to date
I have it plugged in as a DVI-D
I went into the AMD control panel, and it has no option for 144hz, and when i go to set it maually to 144hz, the AMD control panel rejects the settings.
Same goes for the Windows monitor settings.

I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO DO! HELP ME, IM RETARDED.

I was using that. Are you sure it's not outdated at all? I'm new at this shit. Also I've been using r/monitors for help, which might be a bad idea? I'm not sure. The general consensus there seemed to be that this was better than the monitors on LI in the >$200 range.

You don't.

You can make a full export of the registry using some command (I don't know the details), but trying to import it later will fuck up absolutely everything. Which means that such an export is no backup at all.

Interesting choice, hiding the prices. I can tell you're overpaying for that liquid cooling (which is pretty much dicksizing) and that PSU which could easily be 650w, maybe less. Don't buy seperate sticks of ram, get them as one set so they're factory paired. I don't know anything about your ssd, which is generally a bad sign. Why not go for a more common brand?

I cut out the prices because they are irrelevant, I don't live in the US and I'm not buying from any of those stores, I simply copied the products I had on my store's shopping cart to pcpartpicker to post it here on a recognizable format.

So do you recommend just a fan or some other liquid cooler?

I got two sticks because of the dual channel, not sure if this is wise.

I won't lie the SSD was a pretty random pick, I'll look into getting a more common brand.

Yeah I don't see any reason to go past fans unless you're trying to impress people or set pointless records. When you buy multiple sticks of ram, you want to make sure they are sold in the same package, not just two sticks of the same kind.

Either way, its dual link, the monitor supports it, the cable is dual link, and the Card supports it.

Then I'm gonna guess you're having problems with windows 10. Apparently it keeps fucking up the multiple refresh rate thing. You can try this

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/3u2jbm/windows_10_dual_monitors_different_refresh_rate/

And make sure that windows isn't running a reinstalled copy of the Xbox app's GameDVR. Otherwise I think you're down to googling and praying. FWIW I wasn't trying to give you an stroke. I used to work phone tech support, and we learned that it's absolutely essential to rule out one possibility before moving on, or you end up spending an hour on the problem only to realize you missed something simple because you didn't double check. Good luck man.

So when I get WD greens for my nas, do I first plug it into my normal computer and modifying the head parking to be less aggressive? Then the drives are fine to put in any nas or computer and will retain those settings in the firmware?

Someone can make a hotspot and call it 'free city wifi' or something and then watch all your information as it goes over the internet. A lot of apps put out unencrypted information that is super easy to steal, and they can also try man-in-the-middle attacks to get bank information and things.

You can also take an existing wifi like mcdonnalds or the public library and broadcast your device louder so that you become what people are attaching to even though there's legit wifi around. You could even do this in a hotel where there's a wifi password if everyone uses the same password.

Then you don't need watercooling, just get a regular fan. Also, switch from 6600K to 6600, and from a Z170 mobo to a B150 one. You can drop the alim to a 600W one and with that money invest in a real ssd and quad channel ram or maybe an i7 if you plan on streaming/video editting.

My friend is using an FX 8350, and some cheap ass motherboard he got from i dont know where. He had random freezes and crashes when playing games/stressing the CPU. I told him to disable CPU turbo, and it stopped the crashes. He has a 600W power supply and a 750ti, so I doubt it's power.
Is his motherboard probably fucked?
>>
>>56022460
Was literally just looking this up, because I had the same thing happen to me last night when I was building MY new computer.

http://www.howtogeek.com/239815/why-cant-you-move-a-windows-installation-to-another-computer/

I guess it makes sense, but I am surprised there is no generic motherboard drivers that can boot a barebones environment.
>>
>>56022460
You're an idiot. And windows is installed to a particular pc, drivers and all. Sometimes it will manage to repair itself in the new computer and find new drivers, but usually not.
>>
>>56022487
The symptoms are so generic it's hard to attribute it to anything, but just make sure he has all the latest drivers/bios updates.

CPU Turbo is a gimmick on desktops anyway.

Yup we went and clean installed every single driver that he was using. Checked all power cables to make sure they were 100% in.

I said 'this is kinda what happens when you have an overclock too high' and we figured it out from there. Now he's locked at 4.0ghz which is fine, but he's got a 212evo on there so it kinda sucks that he can't make use of the OC headroom.

heh, im liking C
>>
>>56024396
Yeah, C is strong but dangerous too. Have fun!
>>
>>56024335
Well this was a fun to see, let me try to explain this.

The printf function thinks that the integer you passed to it is a character string.
And strings in C are just arrays of characters, with a null terminator appended to them.

When a is 72 it looks something like this is memory, 72, 0, 0, 0.
It just so happens that the string "H" has the same memory layout as an integer 72 on your machine.
It will look different on machines where the integers are stored like 0, 0, 0, 72.

Try setting a to 0xFFFFFF if you want to confirm this. The program should print garbage and die.

The correct way to print a value of an integer pointer is printf("%d", *a);

You should enable warnings on your compiler so that it will catch errors like this.

You can't dereference a, because a is not a pointer.
Because a is not a pointer, you can pass it as it is.

int a = 123;
int *aptr = &a;

printf("address of a %p\n", &a);
printf("address of aptr %p\n", aptr);
printf("value of a %d\n", a);
printf("value of aptr %d\n", *aptr);

Alright, so I have a workstation and I just bought some Registered RAM. Problem is, it doesn't fucking work, and it definitely SHOULD. Now, Lelnovo says max specs for this thing is as follows:
Memory

Type DDR3 Unbuffered SDRAM
ECC Supported
Maximum Capability : 1600MHz, UDIMM : PC3-10600 (1333MHz), RDIMM : PC3-8500 (1066MHz)
Max DIMM Sizes : 4GB
Maximum system memory : 24GB

Now, I am 100% positive that these limitations are sheerly based on the W3550 inside of it. I'm going to put an L5640 in there, and I have two questions:

First, will the L5640 be compatible with my system? It's an S20, by the way, and I'm sure it will be. Same socket and everything, but I just want to be sure.

Second, what is the maximum size and number of RAM that I can use for that processor? I currently have an 8GiB module.

You could do that, many of the C standard library string functions also work like that.
Note that the vocals array in your previous post does not contain a null terminator.

You should write it like this:
const char *vocals = "aeiou;
or
char vocals[] = {'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u', '\0'};

I have a linux installation (gpt partition table) and want to make some place to install windows. I have two stupid questions but I can't seem to find any serious ressource on the net when it comes to these kinds of things so here goes:
- How do I/Is there a way to shrink an EXT4 partition? If I understand correctly you're supposed to resize the filesystem and then resize the partition but it seems strange. Won't I lose my data by doing so?
- Is it even possible to install windows even if I have a linux installation already up and running? Won't the windows install overwrite the entirety of my disk?

I have a 1TB hard drive that I don't know what to do with.

I have an external hard drive for backup already and the internal hard drive in my computer is only 10% full

what do? It's an internal hard drive but I have an enclosure for it

Use GParted, dipshit.

No.

Yes, it is. You'll just have to do some extra things.

pls gib
>>
>>56025164
Oh, and no, it won't overwrite the entirety of your disk, it will only install to the unallocated partition of your disk, if there is any.
>>
>>56025184
>>56025195
I take it it's easy to shrink a partition using GParted? Alright I'll give it a shot, thanks.
As for the extra steps, what are they? Other than reconfiguring your bootloader via a livecd.

would it be dumb to buy a freesync monitor with an nvidia card? The gsync version costs $280 more and seems like a ripoff.

is screen tearing even noticeable when you have high frame rates? I'd get an amd card but they don't have any high end ones until next year right?
>>
>>56025174
hard drives are for porn
>>
>>56025243
Tearing is less noticeable at higher frame rates

Sorry.

Personally, I used the GParted live CD when configuring my system.

Afterwards, I used the command line there in order to access the partition with my linux install and updated the GRUB.

I'm sure you could find out another way, though.

It's a popular torrent, fresh install, what do?
I'm completely open to other torrent programs if they run on Win7.

How do I install Ubuntu Mate onto a USB so that I can use it as if it was a normal OS but without taking up space on my hard drives?
>>
>>56025308
Use Deluge.

I'm not sure if Transmission has a Windows version, but if it does, use that instead.
>>
>>56025282
Well, that's pretty much what I thought I should be doing. I will boot from my distro livecd, chroot in my linux fs and reconfigure grub. It should be just fine.

Thanks for your help.

>>56025243
It would be dumb to pay extra for a freesync monitor when you can't use that feature...which you can't with nvidia
>>
>>56025404
but freesync is free
>>
>>56025348
You're welcome.

>>56025421
Then why are you paying more?
>>
>>56025421
For them to license, not for you to buy
>>
>>56025454
who said I am? The monitor happens to have it but it's way cheaper than the gsync one
>>
>>56025482
Than a comparable monitor without either of those "features", retard.
>>
>>56025482
Well if the best monitor happens to have freesync and you're not paying extra to get one with that feature, then it doesn't matter. But you'll never make use of the feature unless you have an AMD card.

ok then find me a 27" 1440p 144hz IPS monitor under $520

Pointers are used when you know you will need data, but you don't know how much.

Ah, I see. You're buying used. Item 232041510257, huh?

Yeah, we're done here.

I have several files with ~ in filenames which i need to transfer through ftp. However, filezilla turns this ~ into a mess and times out on every transfer. Even though it's supposed to transfer it (~ is a valid character, as far as I know), or at least replace it with "_", it does neither and just goes
>Error: Connection timed out after 10 seconds of inactivity
>Error: File transfer failed
And I'm pretty sure those same files were transferring just fine before a clean W10 reinstall. What can I do to fix this?
>>

install gentoo

i got 2x 4gigs of ddr3 ram in my rig

a friend of mine had a spare single 8 gig ram stick

can i just slap it into my machine and be done with it or is there something i have to consider?
>>
>>56026312
If its a slower clock speed than what you have your computer will lower it to that
Ex. 1600mhx 2x4gig and a single 8gig 800mhz stick = 16gb 800mhz
