Pexon cable came presumably broken. Doesn't power the micro controller, and seems to cause other things also plugged into my pc to not work.

Best and cheapest place to get rubber o-rings? How thick is too thick (in your opinion)? I ordered some 5mm x 11mm x 3mm for $2 from a chinese eBay seller but I'm a little concerned about the dimensions. Thoughts?

What's the failure rate on mechanical keyboards, in particular, the ducky shine series?

I've had nothing but shit luck with new keyboards so far and the cheapest one has lasted me the longest, so I'm looking to enter a different segment in the market where maybe, just maybe it'll last as long as this thing.

Aluminium case for Shine 3 TKL? I'm gonna paint it (enamel white w/ brown caps), so colour doesn't matter, but I can't seem to find one that can accommodate the USB placement. I'd rather not mess with moving the USB connector, so does anyone know of one that's already compatible.

i do a lot of programming, and i have a swedish keyboard layout where the curly braces { } are awkward to type, so i have them on dedicated macro keys on the left which i can hit with my left little finger without leaving the home row. perhaps i could reuse the ÖÄ keys since i don't use them when programming, and maybe i could use caps lock and the key above tab for copy/paste, but i will have to think about it more before i get a keyboard without extra macro keys. i don't want to switch between layers or just key combos just for curly braces since i use them so much when programming.
>>
>>55993537
or maybe caps lock for left curly brace, Ä for right curly brace, Å for copy, Ö for paste. hmm...
>>
a while back i saw anon do a nice project, sanding keycaps one by one and the end result was real nice, anyone got links for that project? there were quite a few pics and some detail about how he did it etc.

the keycaps were black on the sides and semi-opaque white on top iirc

well your not gonna get cheaper than this unless you buy a used keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1470747543&sr=8-4&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

This board uses switches made by Outemu but branded by Gaote, which are some one of the better cherry clones out there. Plus its water resistant
>>
>>55994042
he asked for cherry switches though
>>
>>55994054
You're not a real gamer unless your keyboard has GENUINE Cherry MX switches

I want this cherry meme to end. Gateron makes better switches then cherry and outemu comes pretty close in quality.
>>
>>55994109
i actually prefer gateron but he asked for cherry.
>>
>>55994037
I don't think that would work since cherry ml switches have a different stem then the mx ones, and he said wants to put his own key caps on there, which wouldn't fit

Currently have a dogshit €10 keyboard from Tesco.

I was looking at the Ducky Shine 5 that was on the /mkg/ recommended list a few months back but it costs €177 here which is pretty fucking expensive for a keyboard. I am using it for gaymen but I will need it for college and shit which requires a hefty amount of typework.

I believe the ducky one/pro is cheaper and even has macros

The computer won't recognize it anymore and only registers as a composite usb device, probably due to corrupted firmware and official firmware updates do nothing to help.

Get a decent brand/switch.
Most of them are blues, so you really need to dig until find a good looking brown/black/red. You can start with this one, budget with Outemu switches.
http://pt.aliexpress.com/item/Drevo-Gramr-84-Key-Gaming-Mechanical-Keyboard-White-Backlit-Wired-Mechanical-Keyboard-Black-Switch/32685552791.html

Myself and many others have with the original Magicforce, this is a brand new full-sized version.

Those have been awesome quality for a budget board, with Gaterons especially. I don't see why adding a numpad would change that. Top case is metal, switches are well-mounted and backlight can be disabled.
>>

Actually, I wanted a black Ducky One TKL with no backlight, but the store had nothing left with Brown Switches, and after looking for anything related I found the white one.
It wasn't in Ducky's website, so I emailed the store asking for more details. They told me it was legit, so I bought it.

I chose the browns because they make sense for a first buy, and they won't annoy my co-workers.

While searching right now I found the Ruyi Bird (RuyiNiao) K-26, but I'm finding little info of it. Anyone has an idea of them?
Apparently they use Gateron switches (which are Cherry clones, right?), as either blue and black switches, sport an either white or black chassis, and I can set the backlight to a single fixed color (thank god for that at least).

Sadly, this is all I could find on them. Nothing on key rollover or even actual confirmation on switch type, for instance.

Well, I got two pictures to sort of illustrate.

The arrow keys on the "hitbox" controller have the arrow button that your index finger uses lower than the arrow keys your ring and middle finger use.

I put a picture of a space bar key that is shaped in a way so your thumb has an easier time hitting it. Has anyone had an experience customizing a key or buying a keyboard button that was like that?

that controller looks horrible but good luck anon, if you know someone with a 3d printer maybe you can make a keycap like that?

Cherry switches are plastic garbage. Plastic on plastic on plastic. Tactile cherry are absolutely disgusting to type on. Lubing helps, but then a Topre feels better anyways.

Alps are better in almost every way. Metal leaf springs, dampened or undampened. Higher actuation point for you gaming kiddies too.

Then we have Buckling Springs are superior over all of them for when you want actual mechanical typing experiences.

It's not contrarian, it's a fact

That's a good thought actually. I've been using a TKL for a good year now, and a board with custom modifiers and F-keys and stuff with normal arrows before that. Maybe being on that pok3r for a while would make it a non-issue, given that you have to fudge around to get arrows anyway.

Interesting.

And cheers. I'll have to give the pok3r another look. After something a bit smaller I can get before uni. IIRC they're pretty simple to disassemble and paint, which is a plus. Going for enamel white and SA Chocolatier keycaps on my next board I think.

Any tips on picking the better Topre Realforce weight? Primarily for typing/development, though I also do some casual gaming from time to time. I'm most set on the 45g, but I'd like to hear opinions of 55g and Variable users. Trying it out is out of the question, almost nobody in this country owns one let alone stocks one.
>>
>>56014478
Just remember diminishing returns, if you're expecting a huge jump over the Magicforce you might be disappointed.
Cherry/clone stuff is like that nowadays, but it's still fun to build it yourself.

Im not really expecting a huge difference ( other than some minor improvents with a custom build). More than anything I want to build my own.

Seems neat, not sure if its worth the price though. And its really only good for people that play games, not sure what else you would use it for.

They could use an editor.

Will it have an API for the lighting? That's the main reason I'm thinking of just building my own. No one provides a damn API.

Nice, some time ago I thought it would be nice to have analog switches. Too bad the layout isn't ergonomic at all and PCB-mounted sensors will make making DIY keyboards a little harder. Also, I'm not sure if we can call them mechanical when they're using IR sensor. Supposedly Topre is also working on analog switches.

>>56015417
The only other ideas I have for it would be scrolling and cursor movement.

Or wait, I have a great idea

YOU COULD WEIGH STUFF WITH IT

Model Ms use a membrane and everyone calls them mechanical keyoards. There's no concise definition of the term.
>>
>>56017095
Even worse Topre switches are just membranes with a spring inside and people still call them mechanical
>>
>>56017170
>membranes
There's no membranes in Topre keyboards.

That's because too many people equate "membrane" with horrible and "mechanical" with premium.

Anyhow, between expensive Topres and not-quite-exactly-what-I-want Blues and Browns, I can't even pick a keyboard. Right now I'm using a backup daily driver, which is this ancient membrane keyboard I found in my basement. Built like a tank, though.
>>
>>56017170
Topres are capacitive like Model Fs. It's true membranes are a cost-cutting measure used on cheaper keyboard lines, and tend to feel worse all around. But in the end, they're still mechanical.

The switch consists of a slider in a housing over a rubber dome over a conical coiled spring over a printed circuit board. Switches are discrete components, but built as sheets.
The rubber dome provides most of the resistance and tactile feel. (Some Topre-switch keyboards also have differently weighted domes to compensate for individual finger strength, similar to the Key Tronic ErgoForce.)

Apparently their pointing stick uses a different sensor than a real trackpoint, resulting in an inferior feel. An M13 would be a proper trackpoint, but it's only a trackpoint II and apparently the M13 has poor (for a Model M) build quality.

Ways in which Zach fucked me, in chronological order:

- Delayed shipment because he dropped the package behind something
- Forgot to include keycaps
- Cut a mounting plate for a FC660 case without checking that it would fit or even that the holes lined up
- Sent 53 switches instead of 70

The first two I let go. The third irked me. The fourth was the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were - now I'm bitter.

Original original.
I found an old keyboard in the tech disposal bin of my uni (I was taking apart printers, looking for coils for a project), and there it was.
I don't remember the brand (leopard? Jaguar? It was an animal name for sure).
Piss yellow, battered. The cord was broken.
But the keycaps (double-shot, real nice) and the switches (old white alps) were good. I tried to restore it, but the pcb was hopeless. I kept it because I wanted to use the switches to build a keyboard from scratch, but sadly someone threw it to the trash thinking it was, well, trash.

Alps are not bad, but I wouldn't really say they were amazing. Maybe the modern replicas are better, but the originals were not amazing, I think.

is there any brand that has the standard layout for the alphanumeric cluster but tenkeyless AND without the navigation cluster? and preferably with a matching separate numpad or a combined navigation cluster + numpad device?

yeah like that, looks cool (but it has the cherry meme switches?), but i wouldn't mind having function keys
>>

Noppoo Nano, or a B.Mini if you don't mind an extra column to the right.

(not that i need function keys, pok3r looks fine, just saying that i don't need it to be as slim as possible in the vertical direction)

>>56023313
those look cool, but i need nordic ISO so i guess my options are limited. i think i want a 60% keyboard despite thinking they looked ridiculous at first, but maybe with a separate numpad to the left or in front of my mouse mat. pok3r and ducky have nordic layouts, maybe some others have them too.
