I have owned a Matias Clicky keyboard for a while now and while it has been amazing for typing, I recently got back into playing PC games, and using it for games gets fatiguing and annoying. Is it worth it to grab a second keyboard just for gaming, and have to juggle the two?

Yeah, I already bought it since it's fairly simple to return shit with amazon, in case the other one magically comes back from the dead. also it cost me $58, so it was a pretty nice fuckin deal for it.

I havea ducky shine mini. I'm interested in another 60% or small form factor keyboard, preferably with rgb/RB lighting, and a switch like a cherry blue- crisp with a nice tacltile click and sound, can be a little heavier or lighter, i have strong fingers. Im not a fan of reds or linear switches, and the only time i tried alps i despised them. Semi flexible budget but prefferably under 100 or 90usd. What are some options? Am I hoping for to much?
>>
Say why do you guys like keyboards to be so simple, I get it from a aesthetic way, they look cool, but I just can't imagine playing games or even doing normal shit without numpads and other keys you guys refused to put on your keyboards.

If you have the alphanumeric cluster centered (which you should unless you have half a brain) a numpad puts my mousing arm way over to the left. Doing that for a while screwed up my shoulder. Some people also like smaller keyboards since you don't have to move your hands so much to do things.
>>
Any good open source schematics/designs available for a full keyboard? I'm trying to design my own, but I'm not hugely interested in completely reinventing the wheel.

http://builder.swillkb.com/

make a 104 key layout, paste the raw data into swillkb, will give you a CAD diagram to get a plate printed. then go look up existing cases for 104-key boards and figure out how big your plate needs to be. Or make your own sandwich case.

then look up guides on how to handwire a board

or just go the easy route and buy a kit http://winkeyless.kr/product/b-87-ex-x2-pcb/

wkl is probably the only regular provider of 104-key PCBs. any other offerings are one off group buys.

You can get some "gaming" branded mechs on eBay for pretty cheap now. I saw a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid for under ~$40 USD.

Is there a reason why the price is going down for these? Has mechanical keyboard technology improved a lot in the past year or two?

I brought this thing for 3 bucks, it look like part of some old ass keyboard, comodore or something. The switches are kinda like crocodile jaw. It doesn't have any cable, just pins to solder board to. More pics here imgur.com/a/rCiBA

Anyone know where this thing comes from? Or what can I do with it? Keys are mostly fine, I think after cleaning they will press smoothly.
>>
>>55960691
Stackpole/Hitek switches. yeah they come from keyboards, mostly radio and industrial stuff from the 70s. decent linears with nice caps, but awesome buy for $3.

if you have an oscilloscope and the skills, maybe you can decode the matrix and wire up a teensy.

Fuck, the 69€ used CM QuickFire italian layout mx blue I checked on eBay is full-sized! At this point the only valuable, not-gaming-marketed, TKL, common product I can get is a 158€ Filco Majestouch 2 Blue switch italian layout.

I am not on that level family, but I appreciate it.
Still need to get used to using my keyboard without looking, should be pretty easy though because I sometimes do it already.
>>
Ok:

CHERRY MX-Board 3.0 vs. CM Storm Rapid-i?

What I like about the Cherry is both the price and that I can get it with blue switches, while the CM only offers red or brown.
What I like about the CM is mainly the TKL form factor but it also seems easier to clean, which would be nice, I guess. Not sure it's worth the 50+ € price difference, though.

Any thoughts?

>>
MX red, MX blue, MX brown, MX green, MX black or MX clear?
>>
>>55961499
Have you researched the differences between each switch? What will you primarily be using you keyboard for?
>>
>>55961499
most of those switches having nothing in common
reds and blacks
blues and greens
clears
Browns (shit)
if you like noise go with blues if you don't go with clears unless you bottom out a lot then I'd suggest something like reds or blacks
clears are #1 of mx but mainly because gaterons do everything that mx does but better for the other switches
topre is #1 hands down tho
>>
>>55961555
Would you recommend topre for a profane to mrch keyboards? What brands have topre switches? Are topre both for standard typing and gaming?
>>
>>55961546
Yes, I've been lurking in these threads for quite a long time. I've never used a mech keyboard before. So far I still can't decide between blue or red switches, because lots of people here advised me against browns. I'll mostly use my new keyboard to play fps games and standard typing; when I'm at the computer (basically each day) I tend to use a keyboard for a very long time (3-4 hours). I'm searching for good response and non-fatiguing typing. Noise isn't a problem. My budget isn't strict, I may be willing to spend quite a good amount of money for a really good keyboard if it's resistant, performant and can last for a long long time. Even though I'm a profane in mech keyboards' world, I want an endgame.
>>
>>55961585
>Are topre both for standard typing and gaming?
Jesus fucking christ. What the hell makes people think that one switch is inherently better for certain activities than others?
>>
>>55961757
Edgy. I presume that switches having a low pressure (actuation force) are more suitable to games, while switches having a high pressure might be better for typing.
>>
>>55961806
Not really. They all do the same thing.

I've used browns, mx clears, topre and gateron clears for both typing and gaming, and they're all perfectly fine for both of those activities. Switches are a matter of preference, not a matter of what you'll be using your keyboard for the most.
>>
I now have $90 EnjoyPBT Valentine keycaps sitting here. Top of the line.

Now all I need is a Zhuque and set of Zealios, probably 62g judging from what I experienced with a Poker 3, to hotswap in.

Hoping to use it as an alternative to my HHKB JP Type-S. I have a FC660M I'm currently typing on but the keys are nonstandard and kind of shitty.
>>
Looking for advice:

budget: 60-80 euros
60% or tkl, prefer 60%
switches, no real preference, needs to be as silent as a rubber dome keyboard.
>>
>>55961823
I'm oriented towards mx blues, simply because I can get a TKL Filco Majestouch 2 with italian layout, which is the ideal combo to me.
>>
>>55961823

No, they don't. If you actually used all these different types of switches for different activities you would know that things like double tapping (pretty important in some games) can be EXTREMELY different for different types of switches.

MX Clear and Zealios range seem like the best bet for a gaming + typing hybrid

jeez do you have any idea how smug and gay you look, do you have a keyboard fetish or something since it has to be so petite and bare-bones, the reason i need macro keys is that the swedish keyboard lay out makes it awkward to put curly braces, and it's convenient to have copy/paste on designated keys
>>

You can bind key combinations as you see fit with software, assuming you don't have custom board. Copy+paste is the same for swedes as it is for americans.

it's much better to have designated keys for something that you do as much as typing curly braces and copying/pasting, with a minimalist meme keyboard you have no keys to spare

I'm not sure if my opinion will matter since it's my first mech board and I'm a n00b, but it feels pretty great. The click is very satisfying and the switch isn't too heavy. The only problem I can think of is my right shift has a bit of a mushy click, I can't describe it. It might just be the cap and this is a normal thing but idk. The scroll lock light might be hard to see, depending on the lighting of the room and your position. The stabilizers don't have a wire thing on top but you still have to be careful about taking off the space bar. The ring cap puller they give you might me crap, mine can't seem to clip onto a cap on one side without me adjusting the cap itself, so I'd get one of those wire pullers. New keycaps are a must.

Sorry if I butchered any terms, I'm still learning things.

I almost bit the bullet on the Type S until I found the DIY landing pad mod. Sounds better than the Type S in my opinion and I save 200 dollars

can't you put your e-cig vials and piss bottles somewhere else? do you really need to have them all within reach on your desk at all times?

Are there any 90 degrees rotated Alps keycaps? It would make much more sense to insert the switches rotated in a project I'm working on.

The function row on the AEK II (and perhaps some other AEKs) is rotated.

What project are you working on?

Thank you!
I want to make a keyboard with curved backplate with a different curve for each finger. However counting how many AEKs I would have to buy maybe I'll just hop into Gateron drop on Massdrop. Damn, even getting regular Alps keycaps is pretty hard here when the shipping costs approach the keycaps price.

That looks cool as shit anon. I'm afraid I can't really help you with anything beyond the AEK tip, but please keep us posted on this project of yours.

How and with what material do you plan to make that part (plate? I'm not sure if plate would be the right term here) that I'm looking at.

Actually, I hope you don't mind if I save your picture. Not that I'll be able to use it for anything since I don't know shit about CAD yet, but that just looks fucking cool.

Well, thank you for support!

I'm planning to take my time with it but I will definitively post when I'll have something to show. Here is a part I formed from a thermoplastic for supporting the hand; it has no mounting points though, I just wanted to get overall shape. You can't see the curve very well but it's practically my palm's shape.

I want to get the backplate-ish thing made out of 1.5mm steel sheet. No idea how much it will cost me though and I'm a little worried about it.

I actually started learning CAD just recently, this is my second project in CAD. First was a desk which I still haven't even started making (I wanted to just order it from some furniture company but they wanted around 300$ for it while materials cost less than 100$ so I suppose it's time to learn furniture making). You can see a lot of warnings (those 'i's) on the left side which appeared for no real reason but it werks so I just leave them be.

>>
>>55985307
>>55985391
PS/2 has lower latency, a usb gaming keyboard with 1 kHz polling rate might be ok, but with 100 Hz polling it's fucking slow

see http://superuser.com/questions/16893/do-usb-or-ps-2-keyboards-respond-faster
>>
>>55985501
way to cite a 14 year old study, exactly what keyboards and ports don't use 500hz+ in 2016?
>>
>>55985542
Did you read all of the comments? It's not just a matter of polling rate, PS/2 allows you to simultaneously press as many keys as you want abd register each one of them.
>>
>>55985542
the keyboard manufacturer could fuck up the implementation, similar to how computer displays have varying amounts of input lag, and you could have other issues on the software side, but with PS/2 you get hardware interrupts so there is nothing there to fuck up on the software side
>>
>>55985586
How is this useful in any way?
>>
>>55985586
so does USB in 2016

http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2016/03/what-is-nkro-our-guide-to-rollover-anti-ghosting-and-choosing-the-right-keyboard/

even 40 dollar chinkboards have 1000hz and NKRO now.
>>
>>55985221 here, just noticed I can't input my address properly (diacritic characters) on Massdrop. Do I just omit diacritic marks? Sorry for irrelevant post but the Gateron drop ends tomorrow and I don't want to miss it out.
>>
>>55985643
Not all USB keyboards do.
>>
>>55985643
latency is still a concern, you know how corsair puts an ARM chip in theirs, chinks put some really weak chip to cut costs, you have basically a second computer embedded in the keyboard that you have to communicate with and do software interrupts, while with PS/2 it's dead simple it's just pumping hardware interrupts straight into your computer. the study in the superuser link may be a bit old but the underlying technology remains the same and real-world devices have latency on top of the polling latency
>>
>>55985762
Technically does PS/2 solve any problem in this case?

7) Why does it seem like /g/ hates Razer and Corsair mechanical keyboards?
- Razer has changed from Cherry switches to Kailh switches without reducing the price of their products
- While using Kailh switches isn't inherently terrible, Razer have switched purely to increase their profits

- Corsair mechanical keyboards have a certain aesthetic to them which attracts a specific demographic
- Corsair boards use a non-standard layout for the 5th row. This makes buying after market keycap sets difficult
- There have been reports of quickly dying LEDs on certain Corsair models
- RGB versions of this keyboard have had numerous issues with drivers and flickering
>>
>>55985984
-Cheap goop-covered ABS keycaps with nonstandard bottom row (all the sets you see here won't fit)
-Thin PCB and bottom case materals, only the top plate is metal
-Overpriced 2x vs comparable keyboards
-2001 honda civic gamer aesthetic

IBM Model F AT has them there, otherwise most the boards I named can program any key as a macro.

You can either switch a layer during gaming or just set any unused key to a macro full time.

I wish there were bins of keycaps at a physical store and I could just go buy the specific ones I needed, with many color choices. Imagine if we lived in a world where you could walk into some normie store like Best Buy and there were shelves full of keycaps, arranged not only by abs/pbt, but by dcs, dsa, etc. That would be really nice.

Not to try and dictate to you what you want, but any particular reason?

If you touch type, having a keyboard with a function layer lets you assign macros to any key, so you don't have the leave the home row.

If you don't touch type and don't plan to learn then, and not to try and sound elitist, you should just get a decent qiality cheap rubber dome. mechs for gaming is literally a meme, and if you just hunt and peck you won't notice enough of a difference to care/waste your money.
