For indie vidya, you MAY be able to execute it, if they bothered to make a port.

For mayor productions, you probably won't.

If you are skilled enough, and have good computer, you can make virtualization/emulation magic (wine, Qemu) and get it running, in cost of performance.

Hey guys,

finally after a year of using arch linux on my laptop, the updating broke my install and I don't know how to fix it or where to look for more info.

I did the usual sudo -Syu, then I got a message about the xf86-video-intel driver not supporting something and falling back to d2d mode? or something like that, then suddenly my infinality bundle fonts broke in chromium.

I've tried downgrading the xf86 driver, but wouldn't let me because of some dependency. I've also tried deleting my fontconfigs(fonts.avail in etc) great mistake. Then I reinstalled infinality, which didn't help, then I uninstalled it with -Rdd, which was even worse and reinstalled the default fontset, cairo freetype2 etc. It still didn't work so I installed infinality once again.

I have no idea what to search or what I should do, any pointers or info on what do to where to search would be appreciated.

Reinstalling isn't the Arch way. You should be able to run the same install even for a decade through hardware changes and all. Not knowing what you're doing is kind of the problem when using a distro like Arch. You really should understand your system better if you're going to use it. Actually Ubunto is the lesser evil. The problem with Canonical is that they have shit politics and aren't very trustworthy, but the distro itself is well maintained. Just make sure to remove the amazon lense. Mint is easy too, but under the hood there are security flaws. There's even a blacklist of packages that may break the system.

My suggestion: Get Debian.

Install zsh and you'll be able to create aliases to directories. Bash the default shell on Ubuntu doesn't support directory aliases because they are non-standard.

If ~ doesn't expand to your home directory, you have some serious problems. It's standard.

What does echo $HOME return?
Also try a different terminal like xterm.
Also check your .bashrc for errors.

I have recently acquired a new system with two NICs. Ideally I want the first, eth0, to point to my LAN 192.168.4.0/24, not connected to the internet. The other, eth1, I want connected to the internet.

I have setup the cards on 192.168.4.7, and 192.168.1.36, where my default gateway to the internet, 192.168.1.1 is. And that is eth0, eth1 respectively. However, I cannot ping google.com.

My route table is the following:

default -> 192.168.1.1 -> 0.0.0.0 -> eth1
192.168.1.0 -> * ->255.255.255.0 -> eth1
192.168.4.0 -> * -> 255.255.255.0 -> eth0

I am running puppy linux on my x40. I don't have a hard drive, so it loads into RAM. The system is running surprisingly well for only having a single core processor and 512MB of ram.

I want to set up my system how want it and then set up a sfs file to load everything into RAM. I ordered a 32GB CF card to use as a boot drive, so I will probably create a boot partition and a larger data partition. Has anyone else done anything like this?

It is surprisingly fast. The javascript captcha brought the system to its knees though. I had to disable it otherwise the browser would freeze and I had to kill it. I want to get more text only programs working, so that I can do things from a tty. Puppy was one of the first GNU/Linux distros that I used when I was 7, so it is fun seeing all of its quirks again.

Mainly from me. Mint is a pretty good first step into linux. You read so much about how customizable linux is but it's pretty easy to completely mess it up when your starting out.

My advice. Get a cheap ssd and load mint on it and live with it a while and see how it goes. If you get bored then try to customize it and when it shits itself reinstall and try again and try another version.

I really don't see what problem people have with mint. It's a really good transition from windows.

All the other versions of linux when first seen from the perspective of a windows user is like being greated by the French castle in Monty Python's 'Holy Grail'.

I was testing out some of Linux Mint's new X-apps in Xubuntu (My daily driver) and had a random thought. Since all the X-apps the come preinstalled in LM are based on popular gtk3 apps, would it be possible to create an "X" version of the Gnome Software Center in Ubuntu 16.04 so it integrates better with some derivatives like Xubuntu, MATE, etc. These X-apps look astonishingly beautiful in Xfce, while gtk3 apps look alien.

Ok guys. I have a 10 GB swap partition and 4 GB of RAM. I was told to make swap 2.5x my RAM. I'll be upgrading to 8 GB RAM soon because someone is giving me a good deal. Should I resize swap even if I never use it? I rarely use over 3 GB RAM anyways.

It's not a good idea to remove swap especially if you didn't configure lvm for your machine.
I'd say keep it just because if something leaks memory you'll have a buffer before your kernel panics due to lack of free memory.

Nvidia provides very good proprietary drivers that are on par with the windows counterpart.
Dual booting with EFI is pretty simple because it supports things like GPT and multi-drive booting etc.

Well, there are some pretty nice themes on https://www.xfce-look.org/browse/ord/top/ and for more of the specifics and personal customization, Just press the "All Settings" option in the top left of the whiskermenu and you should find the interesting stuff there. You did good. I have a new thinkpad a x260 and its 10 hour battery for work.

Makes me miss my t520 and w520. The new one is small and a cheaper plastic. Was thinking of trying to get the old ones and mod the batteries to see how long I can get them to last. Should be able to dissemble them and replace the cells even add more cells and make some kind of case.

Not op but I've done similar.

Run Ubuntu just to see if Linux functions fine on the computer and then switch over to arch.

Ubuntu uses out dated packages in comparison to arch so if it runs on Ubuntu it should run fine on arch and Ubuntu comes pre configured so I can easily try everything out. Switch over to arch because I like the customization and newer packages.

Arch is just harder to check with since it doesn't ship with a UI on by default and other similar things like network manager for easy wifi.

I don't know why it has this reputation. The installation is piss easy and it tells you exactly what to do. The Arch userbase is so far up its own ass and it has way too much momentum at this point.

There is very little customization in Arch. It's their way or the highway. Packages are massive as well. If you want to know what's going on under the hood then install Gentoo/Slackware/Crux/Void/any other minimal distro that actually gives you options.

I would really like to have Fedora on my main machine but it has no ssd in it and the boot time w/o will be a new level of suffering.

And you have "-s". That fucking thing is doing a regexp search when you do a query, a normal search for files (where -x is the regexp search), and acts as an alias for --recursive for removals. 'cmon, that's just retarded.
