Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Does anyone else NEED to have terminal windows open to monitor "stuff?" I have one that just runs "ping google.com" so that I know I am online. Another that does "tail -f" on system.log. And a couple others that monitor various things. Just in case.

Just me?
>>
>>55976405
Just stream them to the virtual console like all the normal people do. Dunno about other distribs, but Gentoo dumps system.log into tty12 out of the box.
>>
>>55976436
That's good for system.log. I also know people who stream audio which, obviously, stops when the network goes down. I don't know. I just like to have them chugging away in a green on black terminal window. It always feels like something important is going on.

The last two things I solved with it was to read a man page (for "otool") and cal, to read the calendar for this month. Stupid shit like that, usually.

And the idea of getting a botnet from pinging google.com is pretty silly. What I do know is that if my returns are much over 20 ms, something is wrong on the line.

Useless if you're browsing the internet normally, which is like 100% of the time. The only reason to use it is to test connectivity. By using the internet you can test your connectivity.

It's funny. Even when a browser is flipping out and using tons of cpu and bandwidth, the ping times to google.com stay pretty stable. I do use "top" to see if any processes are taking off (forgot to mention that). If it's some daemon, I'll just kill it (hey, they restart themselves) and if it is some userland app like a browser, I'll just kill and restart.

Oh, I've should have clarified more.
It's difficult to describe, but how things work where I live isn't exactly optimum, in the middle of a third world country.
I do desk work most of the time.
And I'm looking for some programs to make job easier.
I've been searching and this is what I found
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_health_software

https://debian-med.alioth.debian.org/

yet, non seemed to do exactly what's needed especially for handling employees and notifying them.

It's a shitty third world country based on rigid bureaucracy.

>>
>>55977052
You need two separate databases. One for employees and one for patients. Nothing you find online will be perfect for either one, so you will have to improvise to some degree. But they will both be based on some kind of SQL base. I think. You will have to set up the framework and if you are lucky, you can hire some data entry slob to input the data (which you will have to put into some usable form for them). If you're lucky, you will be starting from nothing.

I'm experiencing the same issue. It's not this >>55978142. I turned smooth scrolling off, but the overall scrolling is still lagging and it feels "heavy" and unresponsive. Not just the scrolling, general website viewing too. I assume it's because of the lack of hardware acceleration.
It's somewhat better on my laptop with newer hardware, but it shouldn't be that bad on my desktop with a CPU/GPU from 2007 (the same CPU/GPU has no problems on Windows).

Hello guys, I had a question:

I just began using a DE-less Debian (just i3 and lightDM) and was wondering: how can I change the error "beep" the laptop makes when you (for example) press Backspace multiple times on the terminal, to some other sound? On GNOME the default error sound is that of a drop, so I was wondering how I could go about messing with that.

Thank you very much in advance!

Void is simply superior to Arch, though. If there is another good rolling release distribution out there that can compete I'm willing to try it. Tumbleweed? Sid?
>>
Ok, so I'm not a complete noob to linux but I have never officially ran a distro as my main OS. I'm a Unity3D developer as my main job and while I do build for iOS, I recently got a really good laptop (costs $4k) and I would like to run Linux. I'm a heavy vim user and I generally like keyboard driven workflows. I'm interested in AwesomeWM (I'm looking forward to a lua based config and scripting).

Unity3D only officially supports Ubuntu, but I wanted to know if I can go with something else that's a.) more lightweight b.) easy to install AwesomeWM c.) not necessarily geared towards beginners. I'm concerned about the compatibility with Unity3D, so I'm willing to play it safe, but I don't want half the shit ubuntu brings, including the WM and DE.

I've heard from some people that "managing useflags" becomes a nightmare after a while. What do people mean by this?

I appreciate the minimalism and choice that Gentoo/Funtoo offer but is it necessary to take it THAT far on modern hardware?
>>
>>55982969

Why? Can't your 4k machine handle it?
b.) easy to install AwesomeWM

c.) not necessarily geared towards beginners.
Why? You sure sound like one.
d.)I don't want half the shit ubuntu brings

>>
>>55983048
Yes, vanilla Cinnamon, KDE5, Budgie, Wayland, Pulseaudio requires systemd
>>
>>55983073
"Managing useflags" is writing like 20 global ones into make.conf when installing the system and taking 30 seconds to think about features you need when installing new software. Portage will add necessary useflags to dependencies himself if they are lacking.
>>
>>55983073
Also, "optimisation" is something of a joke in Gentoo. I mainly use it because it's a good rolling release distrib with good support and no systemd bullshit.

We have.
It's because 90% of the issues we have are not answered in the wiki, also the wiki itself is more of like headlines, not very extensively detailed.
And sometimes asking here instead of following some instruction on the wiki is much more safer.
I once had an issue when my sound stopped working, after following several guides on the wiki, the answer came from an anon in this board, which was "shake the whole thing"
It worked.

Why isn't GRSecurity/PaX integrated into the kernel by default?

You don't even need to enable the things that require configuration to be usable. Just cover up the glaring holes in linux' security and let the people who really care lock their systems down for real.

It is possible to delete some EFI variables or something when you have systemd and that will brick your hardware. I can't remember if they fixed it or not.

You have to be fucking around to do it - I'm talking either running rm -rf /* --no-preserve-root (why in christ's name anyone would do that is beyond me - just fucking format the partition if you need to wipe your computer) or hunting down a specific folder somewhere and deleting that intentionally.

Apparently you can configure syslog-ng or whatever to re-dump logs into text files from systemd log services. But that isn't the default solution. It's the Kernel who exposes the variables to the system, not systemd.

Ubuntu

Yeah, Arch repo is less bloated

You should always avoid systemd unless you have to use systemd.

So how many times did you go back to winbabby then?
>>
>>55984946
I understand the arguments against systemd but unfortunately it's the future of Linux.

So you installed linux once and went back to windows 7 times?
>>
>>55984960
Slackware and Gentoo work without systemd by default and other distros can work without systemd. It's not right now and probably never will be a thing linux will require to use.

>ships sources and binaries together

>>
>>55984979

As a CS student, you shouldn't use babbys first Linux anyway. Install Gentoo.
>>
>>55985063
thanks for a proper reply. but how can I motivate myself to use it? I would appreciate some tips on "transitioning"
>>
>>55984880
>but I still havent found anything I couldn't do better on windows

then you haven't done any real programming

and why did you mention that you study CS? that's fucking discrete math and shit, CS has almost no programming in it. CE has more programming than CS.

because I see the majority of my teachers/classmates using ubuntu. also I know that some tasks from future semesters require ubuntu (some implementations on os). and yeah I never did much more than some shitty app
