IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Autistic splash screen anon here
Trying to flash 1.86 (L540/L440) http://support.lenovo.com/no/en/downloads/ds037206 custom splash screen on EFI boot (logo2.gif) (http://pastebin.com/raw/x6rbsQK1), so far only had success with legacy splash screen, anyone got any fucking idea what I might be doing wrong, 16-bit colours, everyhing as legacy just bigger resolution, still ends up not showing my custom splash screen just when booting in legacy mode. >>
>>55916601

If it's legit bricked, hardware flashing it may be the only way. You'd have to check the libre/coreboot website to see if that model (and screen) are compatible.

Hallo /tpg/
Considering T420, e4310 and e6410, are there reasons to pick one over the others? They all look great
>>
>>55916740
It gives error beeps of 3-1-3 or something which the manual says is DIMM error or system board. I swapped around the RAM but still happened so I assume I've bricked the board then. But you think hardware flashing would fix that? Cheers, I'll have a look. I fucking hope it's compatible

My richfag uncle used to buy Thinkpads until Lenovo bought the line. Then he switched to Sony. Not sure if he had firsthand experience that made him hate Lenovo Thinkpads, or if he was just biased. He says:

>You never get more than what you pay for.
He can afford it, so he just buys expensive computer hardware. He gave our family two hand-me-down IBM thinkpads.

The Thinkpad T41 served me well as a porn machine. It finally died last year.

>>55915947
I run Lubuntu on my XP-era Thinkpads. It just works. Arch would probably work if you know how to use it.

Lubuntu works great. XP would probably appear outdated and shitty, plus it is no longer supported by MS.

Dunno about the T430 but on my T420 i've upgraded almost everything, also having three drives is sugoi.
>>
>>55917050
Pretty much no laptop has an upgradeable GPU.

You can replace the RAM, drives, the screen, and the CPU. But the CPU is going to be third gen Intel only so not much you can get will be a very big upgrade.

But, T430's hardware is still pretty competitive these days due to CPU improvement stagnation
>>
>>55917425
Light gaming meaning what games? If it's shit like Doom then even an old T60 will run that fine

You can't upgrade the GPU inside the laptop, but you can plug in an external graphics card through the ExpressCard slot using a PCIe->ExpressCard adapter

postin again
my brightness controls (fn+home and fn+end) as well as the sleep button (fn+f4) have stopped working correctly on my t420 with arch and openbox.
the brightness can still go up and down, but the lowest settings just turn off the backlight completely instead of getting dimmer. i can still bring it back up from there though
the sleep button does nothing.
i have no idea what i've done to cause this, as they were all working fine one day and not the next.
acpi_listen sees all of them just fine
if i log in as root (who has nothing installed) they all work perfectly, i suspect because of thinkpad-acpi included in the kernel.
any suggestions??
i tried adding
acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
as well as
acpi_backlight=vendor
and
acpi_osi=Linux
to my boot parameters, but none of them fixed it

Is E560 a decent choice for an unused Cuckono budget ThinkPad?
>>
>>55917390
I don't know a ton about workstations or how poorfag of a budget we're talking, but you might look at the Lenovo ThinkStation D20 or S20.

I've been eyeballing a D30 for a Plex (and other things) server if/when my current desktop-turned-server poops out or gets overwhelmed.
>>
>>55917608
Principally eBay, but I've seen plenty of other folks around land deals with local shops/businesses/Craigslist/swappa. It just depends on the availability in your particular market.
>>
>>55918265
Being situated in Oxford, coming across ThinkPads in the wild isn't the easiest thing to do.
>>
>>55918290
Not picking on you specifically, but without flags it's impossible to give good advice to questions like that. I know this is a very international site, but really you should set that out in your original question if you want your fellow countrymen to give you the scoop.

Being an American, and with most of the buying guides/pricing being for an American audience, it just perpetuates a lot of confusion/bad advice from other anons. I'm completely unfamiliar with the European market other than I hear a lot of people buy from German sites for some reason (and swap keyboards), as they seem to be more common there.
>>
>>55918290
In the UK it's pretty much relegated to eBay/hardware trades on Reddit I think.

Reddit is shit, but the hardware trades subreddit (which also does sales, not just trades) is exceptional.

I'm a frequent goer of Charity and junk shops, I have never seen a thinkpad in there. Copped a few cheap PC's and laptops but never a thinkpad in almost ten years of going.
>>
>>55918382
Oh you misread me, I wasn't trying to correct you saying "Well that's not so EASY for some of us", I was just saying that it's difficult to find good shit in the UK.
>>
my chromebook piece of shit just died on me. thinking of getting a chinkpad as i'm poor.

How's a t420 from newegg sound? i'd be using it with an external display. How hard is it to add a stick of RAM?
>>
>>55918409
No worries. I was just saying it would help a lot if international folks would announce themselves as such right from the get-go to cut down on unhelpful cross-chatter from my fellow Americans whose buying options/pricing is vastly different.

I definitely hear you that options are limited in the UK/EU/BR/AUS/etc. I wish you luck. Regardless, you're going to pay a premium even for older hardware in the world at large.

It's very easy. Just one screw needs to be removed. Just make sure you buy the right type of RAM (DDR3, 204pin, 1333).
>>
Got my first Thinkpad 3 weeks ago from a craigslist for $110 and some gas. I'm loving the fingerprint scanner, trackpoint, ThinkLight, the indicator LEDs, the placement of the power and USB ports on the back, and how cool the chassis feels when its running. I heard complaints about the WXGA T420 screen, but it is actually very tolerable. Not a pain at all from how I use it.

I'm waiting on a mSATA SSD sale to upgrade it. Maybe a 1TB HDD upgrade too. I'm feeling a little cramped with the 320GB that came with it. One thing I don't like is the chassis shifting and making a "click" sound when pressure is placed on the lower left corner of the palm rest.

Personally I scan the national auction site and google the model I want with local language filter. I usually go for refurbished ones from a local shop though since I can deduct the VAT from those in business taxation. It's bit pricier than US price guide recommends but I want my local snowflake keyboard layout.

>>55917390
Desktops are a completely different from laptops since they are modular by definition. You just have a tower and search for the best/cheapest 2+ years old components you can plug in your current motherboard.

Maybe cheap business-grade towers are a thing if you're looking wholly new desktop but that isn't usually the case.

>>55919658
To me it's hard to believe that non-genuine ThinkPad chargers are even a thing. The refurbished market seems to be flooded with genuine chargers at around 10€ (65W, large round connector).
>>
>>55920185
About the charger, yeah I don't get it either.
I'm glad it didn't damage anything and that the first thing I did when I got the laptop was order a genuine. Still, pretty stupid of me to use this one.

That's not a ThinkPad. Not even marketed as ThinkPad and clearly a consumer oriented device with a gayming marketing angle. You should go ask advice somewhere else.
>>
Currently using a T61 with 2 GB of RAM, running Xubuntu XFCE. It's lagging and I've just had the thing for a long time. Also using a 160 GB SSD, too.

Buy 4 GB of RAM or just wait, save and get the x220?
>>
>>55920806
Are the things you're doing being bottlenecked by RAM?

If not, don't buy more RAM, but I could see 2GB being too little these days for a lot of even normie tasks.
>>
>>55920806
get a cheap used ram stick until then
>>
>>55920806
If you're actively using it for daily computing you should just upgrade to X220 for more power and convenience.

If you like to hobby laptop on it you should max out the ram with 2x4GB.

If you're super poor check if the lagging is caused by swapping and if so buy just enough to keep you floating. I'd guess 2GB sticks are super cheap as they are usually discarded after the 2x4GB upgrade for that generation.
apt install zram-confing
should help too.

It ran Playstation 2 games on Windows through PCSX2 very well, haven't tried it on Lubuntu yet, I switched today because I accidentally fugged my w7 install.

The jump from HD 3000 to HD 4000 did make a notable difference, I could play black ops II on steam online with decent FPS on all low settings and in a window of 1366x768

If you don't care about graphics at all, and just gaming - then yes you can play games. There are people who have even played skyrim on this thing with a little tweaking.
If you just want to run run of the mill steam games, like tf2 and l4d2 then no issue whatsoever.

If you're like me, then it is perfect for emulation of older consoles, N64, PCSX2, I assume dolphin will run well on this too.
You will definitely want to replace thermal paste and have the 8gb of ram though.
the stock 1366x768 panel sucks, but /g/ exaggerates. It is no different from any other 1366x768 panel view on a consumer laptop.

ps, linux is worth learning in the long run. I've been putting it off for years, and it supports the hardware you'd find in a thinkpad very well, you have to be willing to ask questions and search forums though. I had to fix a graphics driver issue myself, as well as automatic sleep mode, and a few other things.
The hardware buttons (volume, mute) and FN keys still work too oddly enough

Why would you want a CD/DVD drive on your laptop? Most of the time it's just dead weight taking up your precious thin.

I think some t430s came with quadcores, if not you can put a quadcore in there and it would be a decent amount faster than a w520
I'd do some benchmarks but this w520 is retarded and won't charge with a 90 watt (even though my more powerful macbook pro will gladly charge with the 85 watt adapter)

also the laptop will randomly stop reading the hard drive with the chink battery.
so I'm not sure if it's fucked or if the chink battery is just chinky.
it works just fine in my t420 and the battery that came with the w520 doesn't seem to have the issue (but I think that was my problem when installing windows)
>>55927533
that's getting a bit toasty, I'd re thermal paste.
my t420 would hit 95c under max load, but after re thermal pasting it never goes over 85, and is usually around 75 under load.

Depends on luck and how much you bump it. It throttles itself so as long as you don't force load on it and decide to block the intakes, it'll go for a while. A certain individual I know has been running their X230 without a fan for a month until the replacement arrives

It won't make you blind, but after seeing the IPS panel, you'll want the latter quite a bit. The viewing angles are fairly shit and it's just the general low contrasty experience. The old L412's TN here hasn't killed me but after using the X220t, it's unpleasant for the first 3 days

i was wondering about that too.
but apparently on the model i have with the i7 dual core and the dedicated nvs5400 gpu it seems to be soldered on.
its fine though this is the best possible cpu i can get for my model anyways.
and i never use the gpu really. its basically just a lapwarmer especially since the igpu performs a lot better in multimedia tasks. seriously. i think intel can give amd a run for its money with small formfactor gpus in the future.
never thought theyd be so powerfull.

but it also could be that i missed something i didnt exactly take out the small motherboard. and the gpu could be taken out easily from the front by just taking off the heatsink.

He also says he is considering an X201 upgrade, the X210
>>
>>55929419
You can always downgrade the CPU to an i5 if the heat/power draw is too bothersome
>>
>>55933274
Thanks for the input. But I think it might be a bit too expensive.
>>55932125
I'm not sure if I'll go for it, the customs and import taxes make buying elsewhere almost if not more expensive. The professionally refurbished part and the 12 months warranty appeals to me though.
>>
>>55932532
If you have Windows 8 or Windows 10 then go on the Store and get the Lenovo Companion and Lenovo Settings app, that will install all the stuff you need

Holy shit! Why are these Ultrabay batteries so cheap? Is this shady?

How's the dell e4310? Does it still handle itself well with an SSD and 8gb RAM? I'm considering getting it if I can't put my hands on a decent T420

$140 for a t420 with dock a good deal?

Me again, just did some tests and seems I overestimated how hot it gets, 75-80c at 50% load and 90c at 100% load.

Whats interesting is if I run any program that maxes the cpu, say 7zip with max compression using all cores it will stay at around 90c, but as soon as I stop it it will drop to 65 in like 3 seconds.. Also checked with HWinfo and the cpu will always work at 3ghz, no or little throttling it seems.

Anyway, what worries me is the motherboard temp as it reached 93c, I assume its under or very close to the cpu, anyone knows where exactly?

Its probably the fan refusing to work at full speed as it sounds like a plane about to take off when I play games, is there a program to force it to run as fast as it can?

>>
>>55934146
My X220 with an i7-2640M can get up to 96C under full load, and cools down just as fast as yours. No throttling unless I'm doing something nuts for an extended period of time. Not sure where the mobo sensor is on the T520, unfortunately, but if you don't notice any deleterious effects, it's likely fine.
>>
Should I get a docking station for my W520?
What's so special about it anyways?
>>
>>55934603
If you have to ask, you probably don't need one, honestly.
>>
>>55934603
Do you use your Thinkpad as a desktop replacement with lots of peripherals plugged into it? Docking stations are nice because they let you pick up the laptop and take it somewhere without having to unplug all that shit and then plug it all back in when you return.
>>
>>55934603
More ports and not needing to remove a billion things every time you take your laptop to a different place. Unless you use an external
>>
>>55934146
X220 guy again, forgot to mention, if you fan sounds odd (like a goddamn drone or something) it may need replacing.

Is $29 including shipping the cheapest I can pay for a legit ThinkPad 40Y7696 65W AC Adapter?

So I have a X220i with windows 10 i've used for a while. It works just fine, some drivers were a little troublesome but I solved it.

Now the anniversary update has been installed on it, then I had to install all drivers again and source them out one more time. sigh... now the usb is wonky and it wont recognize most of my external harddrives, and I have no fucking clue why. I have tried several solutions but nothing.

I am strongly considering installing windows 7 on it. Should I?

So I'm thinking of ordering a t460s or an X1 Carbon.

If I order the t460s with the 2.5" HDD and I wanted to upgrade to an SSD, would I need to buy a 2.5" drive or could I get an m.2 drive?

The FRU guide only has m.2 drives listed, but I want to be sure if it comes with a 2.5" drive it will still have an m.2 slot.

I was so excited to buy it too. The seller even lived in my city come onnnnn
>>
>>55936047
Was it a second price auction? If so that's totally understandable and also you fucked up.
>>
Is it a good idea to make someone i know from the US to buy and send me an refurbished T430 or T430s? The price in my country is 180 USD more than in the US.
>>
>>55936067
Don't know what a second price auction is, so probably not. Just a regular ebay auction
>>
Are there any other sites besides ebay or craigslist where I can find cheap thinkpads?
>>
Is 350usd for a T530 a good deal? I desperately need a studycomputer, but buying from ebay is stupidly expensive because of all the custom charges.
>>
>>55936369
>custom charges
Can't you buy from a more local seller?
>>
>>55936385
Yeah, the T530 is from a guy not far from here. Most thinkpads for sale are sold by refurbishing companies like Inrego and Arrow, and their prices can be pretty steep.
How long do you think a T530 would last, assuming I popped an ssd in it and took care of it?
>>
IS $235 expensive for a W520 2GB Ram, 250HDD.
I was thinking of just buying some extra ram at my local electronics store.
The last item I was bidding on had 16gb and was going for 250, then someone boosted that shit to 800 dollars. Having my doubts bidding on some other W520's because of that. Price might get steep like that again
>>
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1ZD3208651
Yea or nay?
>>
>>55936508
actually its 4gb ram
>>
>>55936418
Long enough that you'll want something else before you actually NEED it.
>>
>>55936589
Great! I've been looking at other options, but it seems that 350 bucks for that T530 is my best option. And from what I can gather I get better performance in a T530 than in a new computer for the same price. And from what I can gather installing an ssd is pretty easy.
Can you have a hard drive, an ssd and an optical drive at the same time perhaps?
Not that I use the optical drive often of course.
>>
>>55936672
Yep. mSATA SSD, spinning rust in main drive bay, and optical in ultrabay. You can swap the optical for another HDD caddy if you want.

Just don't jew out and get the 1366x768 panel. It'll look like utter shit at 15.6".
>>
>>55935417
70 dollars or something. What is the point in saving money by buying used laptop if you have to spend a lot on changing it's parts
>>
>>55936802
Great!
Nah, it's the 1600x900 version. Used to have a 15.6" hp dv6 with that resolution and while tolerable, it wasn't very pretty.
Is there anything in particular to look out for when buying used from a regular person? I plan to have him boot it up, listen to the fan, go to properties to see if specs are correct and then see if I can get to bios. Is there anything else I should do?
>>
New thread:
>>55936873
>>
>>55936855
Everything you listed for sure. Also make sure the battery is in good nick and that computrace isn't enabled in BIOS and there's no admin password in BIOS.

Other than that, just look for general signs of abuse - make sure the hinge doesn't wobble, it's not all beat to shit, the screen doesn't have an intolerable amount of backlight bleed or any pressure marks, no missing keyboard keys (unless you're swapping for the '20 series keyboard anyway).
