IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is it worth it to get the quad-core T460p over the T460? Im only going to use it for web browsing and text editing, but the t460p costs the same as the i5 t460. The quad-core is also more future proof, which will come in handy since I intend to use this laptop for 8+ years. Battery life isn't an issue since both thinkpads have more than 8 hours of battery life.
>>
>>55936974
Thanks, I really appreciate your input in this.
How can I see if computrace is enabled? I assume the bios password is pretty self explanatory.
>>
Do I need a hard drive caddy / chassis for an X201 Tablet? The one I ordered doesn't have one and it has not yet arrived so I can't test. Probably just going to buy one.
>>

>$500 or higher
Top spec (Quadcore/1080p/Q2000m) in good shape with 170W adapter and additional goodies included like a fresh battery, a docking station, or other accessories.
>$450-$500
Top spec, good condition, AC adapter, no extras.
>$400-$450
Acceptable if it's quadcore and quadro 2000m, but not 1080p.
>$350-$400
Quadcore/Quadro 1000m/1080p would be around here. This seems to be the category the majority of models on the market fall into.
>$300-$350
Okay if either specs are lacking in more than one area, the unit is in subpar condition, or the AC adapter is missing.
>$250-$300
Multiple of above problems or very low-spec.
>$200-$250
Terrible condition, bad specs, or just a dumb seller who doesn't know what he's got.
>$200 or less
Probably BIOS locked, stolen, or seriously damaged in some other way. Don't expect fully-functional machines at this price point.

This is assuming US prices, almost everywhere else it'll be higher across the board. Remember to use the specs lookup in the OP when looking at listings. Most sellers are not completely thorough in their listings, but if you can get a picture of the bottom, you can look up the unit's type number to see its exact specs as it left the factory. RAM and storage disparity is to be expected since they're so easily changed by the user, but screen, CPU, and GPU are most likely accurate unless you're dealing with a fellow Thinkpad enthusiast. Happy hunting.
>>
So I'm thinking of ordering a t460s or an X1 Carbon.

If I order the t460s with the 2.5" HDD and I wanted to upgrade to an SSD, would I need to buy a 2.5" drive or could I get an m.2 drive?

The FRU guide only has m.2 drives listed, but I want to be sure if it comes with a 2.5" drive it will still have an m.2 slot.
>>
>>55937237
I can't remember the exact menu in the BIOS, but "enabled, not activated" or "permanently disabled" is fine for Computrace. You just don't want it to be both enabled and activated. If it is, it's probably stolen and will be remotely kill soon.

Also be advised you can boot to BIOS and ESC past the admin password prompt and VIEW the BIOS settings/options but not change them. A particular shifty nigger may try and turn it on and ESC quickly then turn the screen around and show you it "boots to BIOS".

So, boot it to BIOS and *watch* to make sure there isn't a password prompt, or flip thru the menu and change something trivial and save the setting.

if you use a hard drive I would highly recommend it.
also if you want to be able to get the drive out easily just get a caddy.

I bought a similar reader (the gemalto one) that fits into the 54 mm port

It says it's compatible to read and write to all ISO7816 cards but no matter what I do I can't get it to work with the SLE4442 cards I have (supposedly conforming to ISO7816-3)

Keep getting errors in GNU/Linux about an unresponsive card. Anyone have any experience with these cards to provide advice? The standards for these are pretty obscurely documented
holy shit it feels brand new, the case is so nice and jesus christ the keyboard
>>
Instead of wasting everybody's time with some bullshit vaporware "retro Thinkpad" that would obviously never be commercially viable, why doesn't Lenovo just release some classic-style 7row keyboards that are electrically and physically compatible with the newer models? It'd be much less expensive to design and produce than a whole new laptop, autists could get their beloved keyboard back with newer hardware, and normies could keep buying their black Macbooks without either party's preferences being forced down the others' throats. Of course, the keyboard isn't the only difference between older Thinkpads and newer ones, but this seems like it'd be a really obvious step in the right direction. Besides, I don't think there exists any laptops where you can customize the goddamn keyboard. That'd be a pretty neat selling point.

how to tell the difference between core I series laptops
1st gen = 3 numbers 520m,640m etc
2nd gen = starts with 2XXX
3rd gen = starts with 3XXX
you get the point
how to tell if it's a quadcore or a dualcore:
dualcore =(number)m
ulv dualcore = (number) um
quadcore = (number)qm or hq
you can also just google it
>>55939128
at worst you can just put the ssd in and struggle to get it out
also get a flat head or a philips thats too big, and press really hard
don't press too hard, but since you seem to be autismo you probably will.
and if it starts to slide stop turning it and just press down for longer.
>>55939291
the same way you would install any os
but since it's windows take out any secondary drives (unless you use uefi)
>>55939376
about right for an x60
it will run, but it's not that great.
>>55939427
the only thing you need is a piece of tape that is reliable enough for you to be able to pull the drive out later
you can just not use any rails since it's an ssd and it banging around int there isn't bad for it, and it will make taking it out even easier

>>
>>55939422
I know that. I know that better than most posters here, who are perfectly happy with their X220s and T420s. But the retro Thinkpad was never going to work out. Even if they did release it, it'd cost $2000+ just like they did in the old days and nobody would buy it, because us poorfag NEETs don't have that kind of money and businesses don't give a fuck about anything that we love about old Thinkpads. I think I could learn to live with the rest of the design changes if I could have P50 hardware with a 7row keyboard. I'd still prefer my older Thinkpads, but we have to face facts. They aren't going to last forever. Some day, Sandy Bridge won't be good enough anymore. We're gonna need higher resolutions than 1080p. Replacement parts and off-lease units will become scarce. It's a long way off still, but it will happen one day. This keyboard autism isn't gonna cure itself, and we need a solution.
>>
>>55939493
GPU is supposedly a pretty sizable upgrade, CPU less so, and other than that they're basically identical. Whether the performance improvement is worth the higher price is up to your wallet. I went with a W520 and I'm happy, it does everything I want it to do and does it damn well.

>>
>>55939493
K2000m GPU is where it is at, K1000m GPU will handle tasks fine, it just has less Cuda cores and half of the RAM.

I'm a bit biased though, I'm a fan of Ivy bridge TPs because muh battery and standard USB 3.0

When I had my W700ds, I was thinking about upgrading that to something more sensible.
I honestly was waiting for a W530 if I could afford one.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=49&cmp%5B%5D=1586&cmp%5B%5D=1617

Not much difference there.

From what I remembered, playing LoL wasn't a big difference either. However I happened to get a nice CPU on the W530 and a fresh 9 cell battery. Shit lasted 5 hours. was great. Paid $250 for W530 because someone needed money badly and $200 on the W520. Sold them for $500 each, W520 sold thru ebay so I had lost some dosh from seller's fees.

>>55939638
Most likely LAN wont be working either.
Do you have another computer & USB?
I use HWinfo64 (or 32bit too) when I want to check which card I have without opening up the machine.
it should be able to identify it under summary (it pops out systems specs first, the summary window is behind it)
It will have a drop menu similar to Window's Device Manager.

I should of been more clear, as sometimes I would check what it says on the LAN or Network card and then download that exact driver.
Sometimes there are more than two seperate drivers for wifi cards.
I think all of them use intel ethernet drivers if you have a ethernet connection.

Just a smaller E6400... I don't know how performance is, however, there isn't a 13.3" i5 or i7 ThinkPad, X201 or X1 is the closest you can get to that.

I have came across them because I worked at a recycler. But I think because of Dell's bios locks, I didn't sell them for much.

Opinion time:
X201 with an i5-560M
or
X61 with a T7300

I want a laptop that I can have sitting around in my 4WD that's small and reliable that I can watch movies on while I'm camping, and has good battery life.
>>
>>55941472
x220
or x201
I'd be careful with keeping a laptop in the car, especially during summer and winter when it gets really hot/cold
>>
>>55941472
X61 is based, but if you're doing primarily media consumption, a screen suited for the ratio and more powerful/power efficient is better. If that's your use case and those are the two options, then X201.

I'd agree with >>55941483 that x220 is a better choice, with a 9cell+slice battery for longer times away from power out in the sticks.
>>
>>55940714
wouldn't it have been better to tell him to pay for a new screen.
>>
>>55941483
I won't be leaving it in the car during summer (or doing much camping for that matter), given it gets as high as 45C in the shade in my state, but winter isn't a problem.

>>55941529
Good point, the X220 seems like a nice alternative - I'm used to using the normal trackpad on laptops, so having that would be good.

I've found 12V chargers that I can plug directly into my car's cigarette lighter port, too, but good battery life is something I'd definitely prioritize - is there anything better than the X220 for under ~$500 with superior battery life?

You could go newer, like a X230. They're slightly more power efficient and still have the slice battery option. With the extra money, pick up another 9-cell or two and call it a day. If I were you that's what I'd do, brother.

If you're handy you can do a battery authentication bypass that will let you charge the slightly less expensive x220 batteries. Also, if you don't care about chiclet keys, you could probably benefit from the backlit keyboard option for the x230 too. Again, if you're handy you can swap the x220 keyboard too.

I don't want to be put in the camps for meme defeatism, but you might could go with a Chromebook for your use case. ARM processors are ridiculously power efficient but IIRC the batteries are internal so you'd lose the ability to swap for spare cells. Personally I'd want that tactical reload.

it's usually not that much more to go up to the core i5 model, and those are a LOT nicer than a celery or a core i3
>>
>>55942356
>celery
It's an upgrade to the X61 or X201, but as compared to the x220/x230 stable, it's less desirable.

Generally speaking -i models are to be avoided unless it's just a spectacular deal. They're gimped models for poorfag business or educational institutions buying in bulk. it's less of a problem for the T (non -s) series since the processors aren't soldered and you can upgrade them. All X series are soldered.
>>
>>55942356
>>55942511
Also forgot to add, if it's an -i model, it's almost certainly going to come with the TN screen.

Fuck that. Buy an X220 with an IPS screen over an X230 with a TN screen. Your eyes will thank me later.
>>
>>55942540
Could I have the best of both worlds and install an IPS into an X230?
>>
>>55942591
yeah
or you could just buy an x230 with an IPS since I'm 99% sure they shipped with them
and hopefully the panels they shipped with have less of a temporary screen burn issue than the one my x220 had.
>>
>>55942591
Both the X220 and X230 have a factory IPS offering as well as TN screen offerings. There are plenty of both out in the wild, TN being cheaper and more common though.

make sure you leave a negative review and keep it short.
>>55943963
1080p on a 12" screen is retarded
everything will be too small at 100% scaling
and windows is terrible at scaling, and the only OS that does it properly is mac os, and it's only options is 100% or 200%
just get the 1366x768 IPS screen so you don't have to deal with the pain that is windows scaling.
It's a shame that they don't offer a 1600x900 IPS screen, that would be perfect for 12"
>>
Whats up with the fhd mod for the t420s? Can those upgrade kits no longer be found?

Thinkpad X1 (i7,non-carbon) here - but I need 16+gb of ram to run Windows VM(s) atop Arch.

That pretty much leaves the X220 - is there anything else in a <14" form?
>>
>>55944151
no
I remember seeing that someone tried to message him not that long ago and he just responded "fuck off I don't do that anymore"
and I'm pretty sure that that's the guy that made the lvds to edp adapter
>>55944461
why do you need so much ram to run windows in a vm?
it would probably make a lot more sense to dual boot windows instead of buying a different laptop
>>
>>55944635

Solidworks, Revit, and VMWare admin (freelance contracts). Otherwise I don't need to leave the confines of Linux/Emacs.

Dualbooting breaks my workflow.
>>
>>55944635
That's unfortunate. Is there a way to replace just the lid of a t420s? or is it attached to the screen?
>>
>>55944713
all of the fancy screens that you can fit into the t420 are all edp (embedded display port digital) while the t420 and it's screen uses lvds (forget what it stands for, but it's analog)
you'd need a fancy pancy adapter that to my knowledge only one person was making.
So unless you have that adapter it's like trying to plug an analog vga cable into a digital display port port.
also theoretically that should add latency to the screen, but I've never heard anyone talk about it.
>>55944708
why not just go back to windows and then use the fancy bash for windows 10 thing for any linux stuff, or just visualize linux

I didn't mean that, I mean the actual top of the laptop, I just can't find any details on how to perform such a change (pic related)
>>
>>55944770
there's some screws hidden under the black dots and you can pry the front off then change the screen from there.
otherwise you have to take off the keyboard and palm rest
dc the video, wireless, and web cam/mic cable
then there should be some screws right next to the hinge and after those the whole lid should come off.
why do you want to replace the whole lid though?

>>
>>55944798
did you turn scaling off?
have you tried it with any applications that have a non standard ui?
with the applications you'd think to test it out it's going to work fine, but eventually you will find that one obscure program that you absolutely NEED and you can't get it to work with scaling.
>>55936873
also does anyone have a link to the alienware 14" 1600x900 screen for the t420?
1366x768 acceptable at 12", but at 14" when there's something good out there I want that instead.
>>
Another concern is the connector position. Some panels have the connector at the middle while other at the left side (looking from the front).
Has this ever happened with other thinkpads?

>>55944867
>did you turn scaling off?
Why would I?

I won't be using windows anyway.
>>
>>55944883
linux scaling is just as bad if not worse
not sure if it's the programs (most likely) or if its the OS being bad at handling it.

£45 x201t is on its way. Unit is missing HD (Have one) Caddy (have one), PSU (Have one), and battery (don't have one, never use battery power plus have UPS)

but yeah, it's the i7 model. Working aside from the missing parts, has the pen.

I think it's a real fixer upper but given I have most of the parts for it, it's nbd.

That and I'm bidding on a unit with a bust screen but has the battery that's compatible and a PSU that's compatible that will always be handy to have. So I might even be able to create a complete unit that way and have this spare that I could use for a headless ssh box somewhere. I think that auction is gonna end cheap as fuck.

Clean the cpu with isopropyalcohol if you have it, I did it with some tissue paper. Apply a small dot of thermal paste in the middle and screw back the cpu cooler (in the order that is shown on it!). I took it off again to see if I covered the whole thing.

I'm looking into W520's and I'm really confused.
How come some 15.6 inches have different resolutions?
They are the same inches, but some are 1600x900 and some are 1920x1080.
Are they just listing it wrong? If so, which one is the right one?

There are three resolutions available for the W520. 1366x768 is a shit panel and should be avoided at all costs. 1600x900 is workable, and I would even favor a quadcore/Quadro 2000m/900p unit over a quadcore/1000m/1080p unit at the same price. The 1080p panel is really nice though, and it's the one you really want.

Taking a look at W520, the description says "Battery: 9 cell (holds ~2 hours charge); note that this is a very powerful workstation so drains battery fast" I thought these were supposed to last long. How much life do you think my t430 has left in it? I got it new in fall 2012 and it yes, has seen some abuse since then. I've replaced the screen 3 times, heat sink fan once, left hinge once, added ram, installed SSD and now the right hinge has broken (I was shipped two lefts when i fixed the last)

How much longer do you think this guy is going to chug along? should i start looking for a new machine?

I wouldn't go that far, components only get cheaper and I pretty much have all the tools I'd imagine it'd require to make one myself if I had the parts

Anyway, it's just too expensive to get, aside from the 768p vs 1080p and 12.5in vs 13.3in which are great gains, the CPU in my X220 is plenty for my daily needs / work, and is only just recently starting to barely show its age and slow down. I'm talking opening a word document takes 0.9 seconds instead of 0.6, opening a folder with thousands of files inside takes maybe 1-1.2 seconds over maybe 0.8 seconds, boot times are getting to be around 30 seconds rather than 15-20 etc (all on an SSD of course)

It's great, and it would last a few years longer than my X220 would last, but I'm afraid I'm not that rich and I can't justify buying it, even despite it looking like the only good 'modern' laptop, unless my current one was no longer working.

Before my X201/X220 (I purchased both at the same time due to finding great deals of barebones models to decide which I'd invest a bit more into - ram, ssd, screen, battery etc) I had/bought a T60p (and was gifted a Dell Inspiron 6000 which is still fucking kicking - it's on nearly everyday in the kitchen to watch tv on while I cook and eat and shit, such a good laptop holy shit), and before that a T40 (was not using laptop for full-time work this early on, mostly for personal use and odd word docs for things).
Point is, I almost get a kick out of making hardware last as long as it practically can. And I'm super sad the T60p is no longer adequate for what I do, and the mods don't have good enough CPUs inside for things like real heavy multitasking in microshaft winblows, or livestreaming very high quality videos, particularly 60fps ones.

But hell yea the X320 and X62 look rad as fuck
>>
My T61 dual-booting Xubuntu/Win7 is starting to get laggy. Not sure if I should expand the RAM from 2 Gb to 4 GB (which, admittedly, is pretty pathetic and probably should've been done months ago) or just throw in for an X220. I WANT an X220, but if I can speed up my T61 I'll hold out a few more months.

Unrelated: how prominent are malware/spyware/viruses in linux? I've been told because they're so niche most people don't bother developing malicious programs to bug them with in the first place.

IPS screen and at least 4gb of memory
SSD and new battery of varying size/quality; defeats the purpose of a cheap laptop to spend ~200 more for those items

>>55955104
it locks you out of changing bios setting like computrace or amt, or booting off usb
it cannot be resolved easily, or at all in some cases
>>
>>55955131
Fuck, that sucks. I'm looking at a system at the moment but it has a BIOS password, I'll have to ask the seller about it.

Should I just order another motherboard?
Perhaps look for one with an i7?
It works right now, but I know the same issue will arise soon enough and only increase in occurrence.
>>
>>55955202
the x220t with the i7 is a minimal improvement but large effect of battery life and laptop heating
>>
>>55955230
so it'd be even hotter than it was?

I seen some other people posting about it, so i will too: What is the best replacement for a Macbook Pro 13' 2015?

Seen a few people mention it.

That isn't out yet, nor would i want one. I bought into the mac meme, need to get out.
>>
>>55955408
have fun
once you get used to the mac you can't go back
>>
>>55955431
Well, it's already sold so.
>>
>>55955446
That's good. Apple's chinese sweatshops are reason enough to not buy a Mac computer. Same goes for many other companies, but the average Mac user is unaware of this.

>>55955703
thinkpads are made in the same place, not sure how it's any different.
>>
>>55955715
Most of the people in this thread buy used laptops and manual upgrades/hacks to keep it working and up-to-date.

I just want to know whats the best replacement for it (Thinkpad wise)

You don't need any program, to rebind it you need edit a registry entry iirc
>>
>>55955797
all the reg links I saw are for XP, are they still relevant in win 10 over 10 years later?
>>
>>55955785
Not macOS, OS X el capitan.
>>
>>55955815
It's still mac os, they just dropped the X at the end because idiots kept on saying os x 10.__

W7 X220, shouldd work elsewhere as well
hklm/software/ibm/tphotkey/8001/file <- string, address to file

That's a regkey, not a file.
If you can't tell the difference, maybe you shouldn't be messing with it.

I kinda want a second paypal account just to have a giggle.

I kinda stopped getting paypal text/emails
I tell them to fuck off on the first reply usually.
Or I would say, "I have the same item on eBay, it's priced more because of shipping/paypal/ebay fees
>>
>>55956376
Both will be a pain in the ass.

Are there any cheap (<$300) thinkpads with a particularly good screen and trackpad.

Im recommending one to my brother who I dont live with anymore and I just want to know if something like the t420 is good enough.

Ive always heard amazing things about the keyboards on thinkpads but never the trackpad.
