IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Yeah no worries. The keyboard is no issue, I've got one in my sights for 352 usd. But I'm in Sweden so it has got a swede keyboard and I don't have to pay shipping and such. Otherwise I'd have to pay for a new keyboard, plus shipping, plus customs, and a new AC adapter as well.
Thanks for the input anon, I appreciate it.

Awesome! I know for me personally, the keyboard is a non-issue as well, I just know of many a thinkpad user who swears by the old keyboard and it can be a real hassle to find one online for cheap. Seems like for your situation, that T530 would be perfect! If you do end up getting it, make sure to get a dank FSF sticker or something and post it up in here :) And no problem bro

Here in the US it would be around $250 or below, depending on specs. What are the components in said dankpad?
>>
>>55896049
i5, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD,
With Windows 7 Pro, and it's factory refurbished.
Costing £211
>>
>>55896082
Seems like a decent deal to me. Do you have upgrade components laying around like more ram etc? Id say you could find a better deal, but I dont screen resolution nor am i familiar with prices in the UK. Dont let your money burn a hole in your pocket, but definitely go for what you want! It can be smart to watch around for other offerings before you make a purchase, if you have the luxury of time.
>>
>>55896128
know screen resolution*
>>
>>55896128
Screen res. is 1366x768. I don't have any upgrades. What type of RAM would I need if I wanted to upgrade to 8GB?

I checked around for and SSD but none with more than 320GB seemed to be justifying the price so I'd stick with a HDD unless I feel I can't take it.

In my honest opinion, Id say look for a better deal on ebay or something. You should be able to find a t420 with eight gigs of ram and a 128 gig SSD for like $300. If it was running 1600x900 or something id say get it and upgrade, but I think your best bet is just to find a better deal.
>>
>>55896294
Im not too sure on chinese brands, but i do remember the low end samsung m2 drives are pretty cheap
>>
>>55896257
You could get a small mSATA SSD just for the system partition and use the HDD as mass storage for big files.

>what ram
DDR3 SODIMM 1333mhz PC3-1060
You can get one with higher bus speed but it will downclock to 1333 without a modified BIOS.

>>55896294
I got 500GiB one from Samsung since they have relatively good reputation for their SSDs and bunch of patented SSD technology.
>>
>>55896331
Make no mistake mini PCIe mSATA and M.2 drives are not the same thing.
>>
>>55896356
Sorry I have been up all night, just a mental lapse.
Thanks for clarifying for other anon
>>
>>55895986
Then just look for the FRU from a seller with a decent rep.
>>
>>55896356
Also, out of curiosity, I just looked up mSATA to M.2 adapters, and they are super cheap, so they would still be an option, in case you have some M.2s laying around not being used.

My 'new' t420 runs at a reasonable tempreature (30 - 40c idle) but I opened rimworld which seems to run it at 100% (havent looked into that yet...) but the tempreatures shot up to 90c in about 10 seconds, but I can't feel any heat anywhere? I closed it and they dropped back to 40c very very quickly (less than 10 seconds?)

Does this mean I need to check the cooler? Sounds like the heatsink isn't touching right or something? I can't feel any heat on this thing when the cpu die is supposedly almost 100c.

Is it decent? Do all the T440 ones have fingerprint readers? Is it solid or does it get easily damaged? Also it has a QWERTZ keyboard while I need AZERTY, do I need to completely replace it or are keyboard layouts stickers good enough?

the brightness can still go up and down, but the lowest settings just turn off the backlight completely instead of getting dimmer. i can still bring it back up from there though
the sleep button does nothing.
i have no idea what i've done to cause this, as they were all working fine one day and not the next.
acpi_listen sees all of them just fine
if i log in as root (who has nothing installed) they all work perfectly, i suspect because of thinkpad-acpi included in the kernel.
any suggestions??

Mine's 1280x800, but it's very usable. It's a small laptop and as a result has a small screen.

if you can get it cheaper elsewhere then get it there

pretty good
if it's the i5 one then get a psu and hdd then sell it because that thing will be borderline unusable

it's not amazing, but it's fine for a 12 " latptop
the highest you can go without things being too small to comfortably read is 1440x900 at that size.

It's the i7 model, so I'm very happy.

I currently use the i5 x201. Ubuntu 16.04, VERY usable btw. I have an SSD and 8GB's of RAM and a very very good experience. Main machine @ home.

Thanks for the response!

Happened to me on my desktop PC with XFCE and my custom keymaps. Backup your config files and delete them, that way theoretically your session will revert to default so you can rebuild it.
>>
>>55900034
If you got an X201s like your picture, you're in the 1440x900 master race. I doubt you did though, because they're extremely rare, up there with the W701ds and the QXGA R50p. The regular X201 and the tablet model are both 1280x800. Still a serviceable resolution, at least you have more vertical space than X220 plebs.
>>
If I buy a T420 now, how long do you think it'll be until it feels obsolete or wears out? The whole "built to last" concept around thinkpads is very appealing to me, it'd be great to get one and not care for new PCs for years.
>>

as long as you don't care about battery life, you get 8-16 gigs of ram and an ssd it will be a while if you use it for casual use.

Suddenly the trackpad, keyboard and lcd backlight have stopped working on my t420s. Even while booting. Also, the screen only works during boot but isn't recognized in windows. I can still however connect an external display.
I've tried booting with only ac and only battery and cleared the cmos by removing the battery for some time. I also tried booting without ram and without the pcie wifi card.
I haven't done anything else with it lately, it was working fine. After I got it, I added extra ram and changed the thermal paste.
Any idea what can cause these problems?

So I'm waiting for my new ThinkPad to ship and I realized I forgot to get a proper warranty. People just dont know how to ship or are just lazy and use what they can easily get their hands on. My G40 was shippin in a box too small for it (it sat at an angle) with a single layer of bubble wrap. Its fine though despite smashing through that side of the box.

So I flashed logo2.jpg a few resolution checks, below 1366X768, exactly 1366X768, under 30 KB. And all is just black screen so what I can assume here is

I'm using a system-wide parametric EQ to correct the harsh treble of my headphones, so dual booting would be stupid.

Don't get the wrong idea i'm not anti-linux or something, even the games i play run fine in Linux. However the only alternatives for a parametric EQ that I've found were ladspa plugins and e10q, which are used for DAWs and not system-wide. I'd like to be proven wrong if that's not the case.

>>55906781
Yes, the best panel you can get is the LP125WH-SLT2, if you like to live dangerously. Some SLT2's have correct X220 mounting holes, some SLT2's don't since they're made for a different laptop.

The SLT1 is the next best panel and is guaranteed to fit the X220.

The SLT1 is a 1366x768 IPS display with roughly 800:1 contrast ratio, 0.3 cd/m2 black level and 67% sRGB coverage. Overall it's a passable panel but the color gamut is lackluster so it won't be the most vibrant looking display around. However it will be at least "look-at-able" unlike the piteous stock TN of a display that unfortunately slithered out of the abortion bucket and made it into the Thinkpad product stack.

If you can't find an SLTx panel, you'll have to go with the SLBx series which uses the inferior eIPS (compared to the SLTx series' superior AH-IPS panels).

Overall:

SLT2 (very risky buy as explained earlier) > SLT1 > SLB3 > SLB2 > SLB1

Howd I do?

I'm running a fresh Manjaro build. Just disabled power management, I'll see what that does. Hopefully after this system upgrade the problem disappears.

I haven't run TLP yet, waiting on that upgrade. Has Lenovo Power Manager received a linux port?

Are there any places that sell the full X220 casing new or refurbished for a decent price? My X220 is pretty worn down and it seems that buying parts individually pretty much equates to a new refurb.

I paid half that for my T420 about 3 weeks ago and it had the switchable graphics and a 1600x900 screen.

Just keep an eye on Ebay and you will find a better deal I was really lucky and it only took me a day after the backlight in my T60 went out to find this one. Only consider buying when they have actual photos of it booted up into the bios

You can use this to search type numbers in case they don't list the full specs

So, the T520 I've only had for a few months just had the battery die. "Tested battery" my fucking ass, shitty eBay seller's page is completely gone now too.

Pretty sure I know what the answer is, but I've never had personal experience with this market; to be clear, the dirt cheap Chinese batteries are not worth it, correct? If so, what should I expect to pay for a genuine Lenovo battery? Both 6-cell and 9-cell? Also, where's a good place to buy them, apart from eBay?
>>
where do you guys get your replacement trackpoints?
got some recently from ebay(fucking chinks) and its kinda slippery and shitty, any recommended places?

Is the fingerprint reader worth it?

I'm not really looking for performance, I have a desktop for that.
