Asking "Hey guys, what's your opinion on x?" is frowned upon.
Wireless is frowned upon.
Headset requests are frowned upon.
Noise isolation ≠ Noise cancellation
If you dislike a suggestion, try giving a better suggestion to whomever asked instead of going "hurr, x sucks"

Can I ask about earbuds or is that frowned upon? I work in a warehouse and listen to music on my apple earbuds but would like an upgrade.

So for the most part, measurements and reviews give me the impression that the HE-400i are worth it. Although one review claimed they sounded veiled with certain music, which sounds unlikely desu. Anyone have any experience with them to confirm or deny them being good?

Some people don't know the difference between IEMs and earbuds so I'll say it just in case.
Earbuds sit outside your ear while IEMs go in your ear canal and depending on the model, can either be deep or shallow insertion. Earbuds by design are horrid due to reasons such as zero isolation and low bass response but some people can't handle IEMs because of fit, even shallow insertions.

Which do you prefer?
>>
Would it be worth it to get an amp for a pair of ATH-M50x's? If so, are there any that you guys could recommend at around a $100 USD pricepoint?

Both are bright, low bass amount. SHP9500 is FoTM shit. I don't really care about brand but the K702 at least has a place in the HD600/K702/DT880 trio.

Where you are, you can get both for about the same price but the difference is, the SHP9500 got its price inflated because it has been discontinued then hyped up, whereas the K702, for whatever reason, has its price reduced.

How are the SHP9500s and its sound signature compared to the X2s?

I was planning on saving for the X2s, but there is some hype behind them as well and I can save a lot. I know that the X2s cost way more and are prob a direct upgrade, but is it a ~$180 upgrade? I'm not an audiophile either. I'm a poor Uni student just looking for a fun pair of open backs to use that have a similar sound to the X2s

A guy in the last thread asked for an opinion about the comparison between the X2 and the Q701. As a owner of a K702 + E10K (which shouldn't be much different from the Q701) and of a X2 in the past I hope that I'll be helpful. Compared to the K702, the X2 sounded a bit too unbalanced to me: too much midbass, weaker sub-bass, much weaker treble and weaker mids. X2 sounded good with electronic/pop/dance music, whereas K702 sounds good for every music genres, even though it specially shines on acoustical music (be it soft rock or folk or classical or jazz), because guitars, flutes and violins sound simply awesome on the K702. X2 is easier to drive and sounds good on any device, whereas K702 might need extra power. I don't like listening to music at high volume, but there's a noticeable sound difference in the K702 when I raise the volume a bit on the Fiio E10K: mids, specially vocals, come out more and the bass gets definitely present, far from being anemic, as lots of people define it. Treble still remains strong, but it gets harsh on very few tracks (poorly mastered ones).

I find the AKG better for any music genres and generally for every other entertainment, because they're more neutral than the X2, then the AKG are more accurate and deliver much better details. This said, you might find X2 better for your needs because of their extra midbass. I watch a lot of movies and anime on the AKG and I find it better because it has a more natural, open sound compared to the X2. The X2 sounded a bit too congested to my ears.
> and how do the Q701s sound w/out an amp?
It depends on the source they're connected to. Recent soundcards may be able to drive them loud enough. You will need to find the sweet volume spot in order to hear all the details and sounds the right way.
>For reference, I've been using the M100s and I like them, but I wouldn't want any extra bass
I don't know about the M100, but I guess that both X2 and Q701 have less bass than them. Q701 has less midbass than X2, but it's definitely present. It's just not overwhelming.

Oh hey, that's me. At this point of not being able to pull the trigger on either one for sure and being torn apart bit by bit from the inside, I'm taking every bit of info I can get, so thank you for the input.
I agree wholeheartedly with the AKG's shining when it comes to acoustical music. Flutes and flamenco guitars are really, really good with these. They bring those and vocals very very forward, and although almost everyone says that they emphasize female vocals the most, I found male vocals to be much more forward. Very mid-forward, I'd say.
The thing is, I'm looking at tradeoffs here - X2 is easier to drive, that's a fact. What I suspect but don't know is that they'd sacrifice some clarity and brightness to be a bit better at being an all-arounder, where Q701 shines much brighter and is much more clear when it comes to good mixes and acoustical stuff, but it makes bad mixes sound just that and it's more unforgiving as a headphone. While I don't listen to stuff like Daft Punk or Justice that much anymore, I do like funky stuff and I feel like the Q701's tight, fast bass might be a bit too tight and fast with its short decay. The Q701's soundstage is also very wide and open, but it's not a very deep stage and I think what they call as "weakness in central imaging" is correct. For the X2's, I suspect that the soundstage for them would be much more narrow, but maybe with a bit more depth and a more circular shape.
I contacted Webhallen and apparently ordering the X2's, testing them and returning them for a full refund is covered by their 14 days return policy (as mandated partly by Swedish law if my impressions are correct), of course it should be in pristine condition when returning them but I don't think they'll shit up in a day or two. I really need to hear the X2's before making the decision and I'll probably order them when I get the money, and return them if I find the sound signature not right for me.
>>
>>55914280
Also, I agree that the volume level is fairly crucial with the Q701's. I listened to my HTC One M7 with them, so that might explain some loss of audio quality and not enough amping (although they reached pretty respectable levels and couldn't listen to them on the loudest level). The more louder it got, the more detail there was and the bass balance was better, but when it went over the sweet spot, stuff started to sound very harsh.
>>
>>55914280
> and although almost everyone says that they emphasize female vocals the most, I found male vocals to be much more forward. Very mid-forward, I'd say.
Yeah, most people tend to judge the sound of a headphone from graphs instead of listening to the headphone itself. Like you said, vocals and generally mids sound great on the Q701/K702. It's their strongest point, I think.
> but it makes bad mixes sound just that and it's more unforgiving as a headphone.
This is true for sure.
> While I don't listen to stuff like Daft Punk or Justice that much anymore, I do like funky stuff and I feel like the Q701's tight, fast bass might be a bit too tight and fast with its short decay.
It's a common mistake to believe that a bassy/V-shaped kind of music (like dance or modern electronic) sounds better on bassy headphones. Having tried both K702 and X2, I can tell you that tight bass is always better than loose bass. Bassy headphones can obliterate mids and treble and for me a bassy signature is really fatiguing.
> The Q701's soundstage is also very wide and open, but it's not a very deep stage and I think what they call as "weakness in central imaging" is correct. For the X2's, I suspect that the soundstage for them would be much more narrow, but maybe with a bit more depth and a more circular shape.
I can't understand what you mean by "depth", but yeah, X2 sounded a bit more congested to me.

> but when it went over the sweet spot, stuff started to sound very harsh.
Yes as I said before, this is the most critical part when listening to music on the K702. I usually keep the knob of the E10K at around 2-4 at Low Gain without Bass Boost in order to have the best sound balance to my ears.
>>
>>55914712
>I can't understand what you mean by "depth", but yeah, X2 sounded a bit more congested to me.
What I mean with depth is how the sound positions itself on the front-back axle. The Q701's sound went really far out to left and right, but didn't feel like there was anything in front or back of me, it was like the singer sat on my lap or something.
>Having tried both K702 and X2, I can tell you that tight bass is always better than loose bass.
I think that comes down to preference, really. I didn't feel like the Q701's really tight and fast bass fit anything like Daft Punk or Justice that well - they lacked a bit of body. The bass notes on those songs aren't of the lingering type though, which definitely explains it partly, but I felt that the notes decayed on the Q701 way too fast for that kind of music.

Really wish I could hear the Q701's with a proper amp and see how the sound changes. I like to listen to music on a pretty loud volume level and I've probably damaged my hearing just a tad in the past with it (although I usually pass hearing tests just fine).

Im new to this headphone game, my first headphones were the UrbaniteXLs which ended up being too bassy, and I sold it at a hundred dollar loss. I dont want to make the same mistake of choosing the wrong headphones for my music tastes. I think they were more suitable for someone with an urban Hip hop/EDM pallette. My fav music genres are Classical Rock, Jazz, Blues, some traditional italian/French/Japanese folk music and classical Mediterranean guitar music. I want to feel like Im in a concert.. i wanna hear every instrument. I dont want to be overwhelmed by the bass. I want to feel immersed. It has to have a crisp sound. I just want decent quality headphones that will last for atleast 4 years. Im willing to pay a premium price for the experience

They are only £10 apart in the Uk so the price wasn't a factor.

The 650's are a very slightly less cleaner version of the hd600's and the vocals don't sound anywhere near as good. The bass difference (which is the only plus for the 650) is TINY.

The 650 is the second best headphone i've ever tried, but it shouldn't even exist. Do yourself a favor and get the 600. Trust me.

I am looking for headphones (fool me once , mic)
OK bass (the sony was distorting at high volumes from the amount of bass it had so not that much)
On ear , not over if possible.
I will be using them with my pc (sound card with built in amp) and my phone while working on computer guts
Closed I guess since I will be in loud environments most of the time
Previous headphones were the sony I just mentioned and some sony mdr-zx310. I hated the 310 in every aspect.
I would like the headphones to have a separate cable for each speaker.

High gain is meant to be used only if the volume is insufficient even when it's maxed or near maxed. Otherwise you risk degrading sound quality by pushing more unnecessary current through the output.

Not him but.

>How do the AKGs sound for Rock (not slow/old rock, more modern, loud, and fast)?

If you can live with the somewhat diminished bass then it's perfect for faster-paced music because they sound very clear and nimble, compared to say the HD600.

>I like Electronic, Rock, some rap, but I've recently been branching out to classical (just a tiny bit)

I find the AKG to excel particularly with classical or live recordings.

>Also, which pair is better for watching movies, videos, etc (if there is any noticeable difference)

The AKG should have an edge here because they have a superior soundstage and show directional cues better.

>how do the Q701s sound w/out an amp?

They sound OK actually but treble is a bit harsh and the bass lacking impact without proper amplification.

No. Get a HE400i instead if you want planar headphones. If you don't mind dynamic headphones, the best options are K702/701/Q701, HD600, DT880. All these headphones need an amp.
>>
>>55918546
I was going off of the InnerFidelity review. It seems all of those are more expensive and would require amping. I can get the he400s for 230~

>>
>>55918587
It's pretty strange, HE400S usually requires more money than the latest 3 headphones I mentioned. HE400i is usually more expensive though. If you don't plan to buy an amp, you may want to check Fidelio X2 for the same price range. There are also very good headphones which are cheap: HD558 and SHP9500.
>>
>>55918649
Why are those all better than the he400s? Is InnerFidelity's hype unreasonable?
>>
>>55918671

>>
are there any recommendations for headphones under 100$ ? I'll be using them for music with a fair bit of bass.
>>
>>55918630
HD600 is only good for audiosnobs. HD650 is overall better for every sane person, but both HD600 and HD650 are still more expensive than 5" monitor speakers, which easily beat even 2000 $ headphones.
>>
I'm detecting a lot of AKG shills lately here.
>>
>>55918630
Honestly if you care about music at all (and if you're considering buying the 650's or the 600's you fucking should) then the 600 trumps the 650. Like I said the extra bass of the 650 is fucking tiny, I listen to rap quite often and the bass didn't feel clearly stronger like I was expecting it to. I could tell from the first song I tested that they weren't as good as the 600's in general, by the 30 minute mark I already requested for a return on the 650's back to amazon.

I use my 600's for games sometimes and I use them to watch films nearly every night and they're great for everything. There's a reason nearly every single person prefers them over the 650's. Check the inner fidelity guy on youtube for example, he has a video comparing them.
>>
>>55918789
Don't listen to this guy, I bet he hasn't even tried them both. I've proven with that picture that I have.

The 650's are great, the 600's are slightly better.

Just a little bit of everything I listen to. If I have 30 minutes in the shop to try them out, Massive Attack - Angel to see how punchy the bass gets, a random Prodigy song, Hotel California, newer metal like Vektor, older like Priest/Maiden, Adele for female vocals and one track I know has really shitty mastering to see how sibilant the headphones can get. I have SR-202s so I'm pretty much already at my end game unless I get into a REALLY well paying job and then I might spring for SR-007MKII or the SR-009, although it would mostly be for comfort as I don't imagine the jump in quality is worth the jump in price.
>>
>>55924693
Unless, for some reason, you absolutely have to get headphones, you can get nice bookshelf speakers, an amp and acoustic treatment with the same amount of money.
>>
>>55924665
It might be a problem with your gear then.

That's why I say a REALLY well paying job, as in I'm making $20,000 a month or something.

I'd definitely get some Klipschorn or something else before then though.
>>
>>55924665

Try flipping your headphones around and see if it seems louder in your left ear, could be that you're right ear dominant or just slightly more deaf in your left ear.
>>
>>55924866
I've tried that, same results. I think it might just be the way the sounds are recorded. Only happens for some tracks.
>>
>>55920724
Headphones with suspension strap, maybe?

>>55923273
It's in the vein of the Ety ER-4P and HF5. More sensitive and a bit more spiky in the treble. Pyotr (Customart) prefers going without damper (damper maintenance as being a problem), I disagree with that notion.

>>55924379
Whatever I was listening to that day, assorted tracks with frequency emphasis and problems, known tracks with extension.
If I actually care to test it seriously, marked sine sweeps and noise.

AD series have wings instead of headbands, maybe that works for you, also some headphones such as the K702 and it's siblings have suspension straps like Anon said, could also work.
There's also the possibility that you just had bad luck, i find the L2 headband to be annoying some times, had the same problem with a few other headphones, yet i have never felt pain with the headband on the DT880 or the V6 for example.

Pearl Jam - Binaural.

One of the few mainstream albums recorded binaurally. Actually only five tracks out of 13 are binaural, but even the ones that aren't are mastered very well.

I'm not a fan of Pearl Jam, but the album sounds amazing on headphones.

(They sound pretty good on stereo speakers as well.)
>>
>>55924379
Usually just my favorite albums, if it's something i know well it turns easy to spot details, problems etc.
>>
>>55924955
>>55925166

I've heard they were good long before whoever it was that shitposts about them shitposted about them.

But yeah, doesn't have to necessarily be them, was mostly using them just as an example of floor standing speakers within that pricing area, I don't have the money now so I haven't actually looked too deeply into it. Plus I'd want to visit an actual show room before dropping that much on anything.

What's some ones in that area of price that I should look into?
>>
>>55924955
I'm sorry, I'm not very familiar with some things here so you can help me understand.

I understand the concept of treble, but does spiking it mean cymbals and those highs within every tone will be louder? Or does it just mean that the body of every note is fuller towards their higher frequencies? Also, no clue who Pyotr is but what is a damper, and why is it bad to not have one?
>>
>>55924955
>>55925160
Thanks, I'll try to wear some headphones with suspension straps and the type the AD series have when I'm at a place that sells headphones the next time
>>
I've got a pair of HD598s, and Fidelio X2s, I want to get into the world of tube headphone amps, where should I start? should new headphones come first? whats a good entry level tube amp?
>>
>>55925792
Harshness, "sibilance", occurs when there is a spike in the treble frequencies, so things such as 's', 'ch', cymbals etc will be diffiicult to listen to and sometimes hurt. Most high end Beyers have significant spikes, the HD800 has a 6khz spike.
Dampers are used to shape the frequency response, like reducing said treble spikes.
>>
>>55925899
So you would recommend the er-4p instead? I've only heard positive things of the music ones, but I'm willing to trust your opinion
>>
>>55925899
>>55925923
I should note that I do like my bass to be impactful. From what I've read it seems er4p wouldnt do that for me, but makes up for it everywhere else.
>>
>>55925923
Wasn't that anon but I would gladly take extensively tried and tested product, the Ety's, instead of gambling and getting customs which you may or may not like and cannot easily resell.

Can''t say I ever thought any Klipsch was a high performance speaker.
There are plenty of Klipsch speakers, with several orders of magnitude in price difference between them. Which ones?

>>55925792
>Also, no clue who Pyotr is but
Piotr is the founder and boss of CustomArt.
>I understand...
By spike, I mean a narrowly focused and fairly strong peak only affecting a few frequencies, not a broad and general treble boost.
Most headphones called "bright" are like this; a narrow peak that overwhelms the midrange or treble drops. They may sound uneven with some sounds being shrill yet still sound dull in spots.

>what is a damper
>why is it bad to not have one?
Balanced armature receivers have multiple frequencies that they are especially given to vibrating at, resonaces. Near frequencies that the driver is given to moving at, the sound pressure increases, leading to a peak at that frequency. All balanced armatures have these, often near frequencies where they are not wanted.
There is one more source of resonances that the use of dampers can manipulate: the ear canal itself, which also produces strong peaks.

Some damping can be built inside the receiver, but the dampers usually talked about are dense screens outside designed to restrict airflow. These restrict excessive motion(velocity), reducing the peaks in intensity, essentially rounding off the tops of the peaks you would see in a graph. Without one, you pretty much just hope the resonances aren't too strong, or have push it all down with EQ.
>>
>>55925878
You're wasting your money if you buy one. You already have a headphone amp.
>>
>>55924693
SR-007 is worth it. It's only like 1K used. The 009 is not at 3X the cost and not even better sounding.
>>
>>55924693
All headphones above HD600 are a joke.
>>
>>55927336

Yeah, looking at the frequency response graphs for them in the past the SR-007MKII basically line up perfectly with the type of sound signature I like so I'd probably actually like them more than the SR-009.

>>55927388

I already own headphones above the HD600 and they sound objectively better in my opinion :^)
>>
>>55927412
Well if you like the 202 you'll like the 007. I've had both and the 007 is basically a straight upgrade. Thought you'll likely want a +5db EQ below 58hz if you get the Mk II and do the bass port mod.

The DT880 graphs as having more upper bass. Sounds that way too, like a broad low end peak filter tuned around 100-150 Hz.
Most in-ears are tuned to have either a lot more bass or a lot less treble, often both at once. I can't think of one with the compact Etymotic form factor.
