Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Stallman uses hardware which is cast using proprietary design software and mould designs. He also utilizes aeroplanes and ships which are designed using proprietary software and use proprietary software to function. He also listens to music which was record, mixed and mastered using proprietary software.

I highly doubt that. Have you heard him sing?
>>
>>55825180
stallman is not a philosophically pure person. he follows his ideals when convenient, and ignores them or slightly alters them when the conflict isn't worth it.

stallman is an egoist in denial, afraid of admitting that he just wants some fucking source code instead of a world where he has to rely on other people because he knows he wouldn't get it that way.

his system has some practical merits but his attempts at creating moral justifications are completely pathetic and nonsensical. how low do you have to be to have to make up bullshit "oughts" when you can just say "it would be fucking better"?

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name 'myfont'
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name 'myfont'
gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop font 'myfont'

Also run these to know which font you need to change:

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface document-font-name
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name
gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.desktop font

The thought of Windows 10 is giving me cancer so I feel like I should try out linux. I've never before used or even seen linux (besides images) so I would have no idea what the fuck I was doing. Linux is attractive to me, not just as an alternative to winblows, but also mostly due to its potential customization and all the animu screenshots I've seen of linux desktops (feel free to call me a faggot). So I just started getting into Linux the past couple weeks, why is there such a heated debate for and against systemD?
>>
>>55826276
Ubuntu is derived from Debian with a focus on user-friendliness and targets Windows refugees
Debian *usually* focuses on stabillity over configurability.
Fedora means you just want something to match your hat but conflictingly would never download CP
>>
>>55826289
What are the NOTICEABLE differences between them? Having more or less "freedom" doesn't really make sense to me.
>>
>>55826299
Because it's taking over Arch and people need to lash out
>>
>>55826302
What do you mean by "conflictingly would never download CP"? Does that imply less security somehow?
>>
>>55826335
this guy thinks so
>>55826054
>>
>>55826304
Debian comes with a deblobbed kernel and by default no proprietary packages (you can enable that tho)

Fedora comes with no proprietary packages but supports nonfree drivers, so your hardware works out of the box

Ubuntu doesn't care about any free/nonfree stuff, most hardware is supported by default.
>>
>>55826335
it's a testbed for their corporate versions
why wouldn't they want to snag every usage statistic they could?
>>
>>55826302
>stabillity over configurability

>>
>>55826349
>deblobbed kernel
I'm gay so that's gibberish to me.

Also, why wouldn't all distros support your hardware? If a distro doesn't support your hardware, I'm assuming there's some strange way to fix that?
>>
>>55826374
poor configurability for end-users like the guy who asked the question. Documentation is too dense for most.
Not that that's a bad thing.
Let's not get another arch vs debian flamewar going
>>
>>55826375
- A kernel blob is binary code in the kernel's source code. Nobody really knows what it does.

- If there are free drivers for your hardware available, you don't need the proprietary "hardware support".

>>
Is Red Hat Cert Admin worth getting?
>>
If I successfully deploy a distro in a VM does that guarantee I'll have no problems on hardware? VMs use "virtual" hardware, right?
>>
>>55826375
Some distros don't include certain drivers and kernel features for religious reasons. If something's not supported out of the box, you can usually fix it but with comparable hassle to searching for Windows drivers.
>>
>>55826416
>does that guarantee I'll have no problems on hardware?
Absolutely not.
>>
>>55826416
No guarantee. Try it with a Live USB first.
>>
>>55826407
It would be useful if your company of choice depends on redhat.
Otherwise wouldn't seriously impress anyone.
How much does it cost anyway?
>>
>>55826399
I would add though that if you're not going to do anything outside of messing with your DE's settings, Debian is a perfectly fine distro.

>>55826426
ok, that's what worries me about running something minimal and vulnerable to breaks.

Am I just being a pussy?
>>
>>55826416
No, but I thought most non-retarded windows users knew how to partition/change firmware settings/install operating systems despite never using Linux.
Is this a false assumption nowadays?
I was pirating windows and swapping out HDDs when I was like 10. Maybe that's just poorfags, though........

>>
>>55826453
>Is this a false assumption nowadays?
Yes. You'd be appalled if you saw the actual ratio of retarded to non-retarded windows users.
>>
>>55826451
Don't do anything stupid like spamming the next button with mouseclicks or setting up mountpoints that you don't understand on partitions you don't know the contents of and you'll be fine. And you can always pop out the CMOS battery if you fuck up your firmware settings.
>>
>>55826453
Linux isn't that simple, though. Ideally I want to build my own system but I don't want to spend hundreds of hours fixing shit that's already been fixed on the "newb" distros.
>>
>>55826453
>>Is this a false assumption nowadays?
Have you been outside this thread the last months?
>>
>>55826479
You have to fix things on newb distros sometimes too.
Usually something like a wireless card that doesn't work out of box. So it would almost be easier to just do it from scratch than remove kernel modules just to load the correct ones.
IDK man

I'm a developer and I use Gentoo and I know a lot of system admins who also use Gentoo. You can read binary? I'm impressed.

You can analyze what it does to a certain extent (fuzzing, whatever docs the dev provides, etc) is what I'm saying. It's no substitute for source code.

Reminder.
>Linux hasn't been Free Software since 1996, when Mr Torvalds accepted the first pieces of non-Free Software in the distributions of Linux he has published since 1991. Over these years, while this kernel grew by a factor of 14, the amount of non-Free firmware required by Linux drivers grew by an alarming factor of 83.

Or setup distcc on a desktop.

Isn't linux just a meme?
>>
>>55832648

>>
>>55832716
thanks for your interjection. so it's a meme kernel?
>>
>>55832752
depends on your definition. to be exact, linux is a monolithic kernel. but if you are so obsessed with kernels, i would recommend you to check out minix3.
